Unanimously positive response for Mammootty starrer Unda

Amidst high expectations, Mammootty starrer Unda hit screens last day. Going by the initial response, the movie has well and truly managed to live up to the hype. Right after the first show, Malayali social media circles were abuzz with positive talks about the movie. It seems like the movie has impressed both the critics and common audience alike.

Directed by Khalidh Rahman, ‘Unda’ tells the story of an unit of policemen from Kerala who are posted in the Maoist-prone areas for election duty. The movie is inspired from some real life incidents that occured during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Story is by director Khalidh himself while screenplay is penned by Harshad.

Mammootty’s performance as sub Inspector Mani is getting him widespread appreciation. The actor, who is well known for playing forthright no-nonsense cop roles, has gone the other extreme this time as Mani is this ordinary policeman without any sort of unbelievable heroism associated with him. He behaves and reacts just like any other normal policemen we see around us. That makes the character instantly likeable and it is very refreshing to see Mammootty in a role without any starry-gimmicks.

Along with Mammootty, the supporting actors are also getting their due praise especially, Shine Tom Chacko, Arjun Ashokan, Lukman and Bhagwan Tiwari. Prashanth Pillai’s apt music and Sham Kaushal’s realistic action choreography has also found appreciation.

If the initial response is anything to go by, ‘Unda’ gives Mammootty’s second consecutive hit in Malayalam after the blockbuster, ‘Madhura Raja’. ‘Unda’ is definite to continue its good run for the next few weeks.

Thuramukham has one of my career best roles: Indrajith Sukumaran

Shoot for Rajeev Ravi’s period flick ‘Thuramukham’ has been progressing for the last couple of months. The movie has a stellar star cast comprising of Nivin Pauly, Biju Menon, Indrajith Sukumaran, Nimisha Sajayan, Arjun Ashokan, Poornima Indrajith and Manikandan R Achari. This is the first time all these talented actors are coming together and it looks highly promising.

In a recent interview to The Cue, Indrajith revealed that ‘Thuramukham’ has one of the best roles that he has done so far in his career. The movie is inspired from some true incidents and Indrajith plays a real-life character. Though his screen time will be limited, it is a very powerful character that will have a major impact.

As the title ‘Thuramukham’ suggests, the movie revolves around a harbour and the lives of coastal people. The story is set in the Cochin harbour in the 1950s. It is based on the historic protests against the inhuman ‘chappa’ system, that existed during the 50s, wherein copper coins were thrown at waiting workers in a primitive ‘work guarantee’ scheme, which had resulted in police firing and martyrdom of three labourers in Mattancherry.

KM Chidambaran had earlier written a play named ‘Thuramukham’. Rajeev Ravi’s movie is inspired from this play. The playwright’s son, Gopan Chidambaram, a scenarist, who has previously co-written ‘Iyobinte Pusthakam’, has scripted the movie.

Indrajith Sukumaran reveals that Jallikattu is an outstanding film

Maverick filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery has been working on ‘Jallikattu’ for the past few months. The movie which is currently in the post-production phase is expected to hit screens shortly. Recently, in an interview to The Cue, Indrajith Sukumaran revealed that he got to watch the movie and felt it’s an outstanding work. The actor was full of praise for Lijo, with whom he has worked in four films. Indrajith firmly believes that Lijo is capable of doing films that even the international audience would be able to relate to.

Lijo’s last two films – ‘Angamaly Diairies’ and ‘Ee Maa Yau’ got widespread acclaim, with the latter winning him the prestigious Silver Peacock award for best director at the Indian International Film Festival of India (IFFI). So expectations are naturally on the higher side for ‘Jallikattu’. The movie starring Antony Varghese in the lead is based on S Hareesh’s short story ‘Maoist’, which discusses about the Maoist situation and a person’s right to freedom, from the point of view of two buffaloes.

According to Lijo, ‘Jallikkattu’ is a satire told with a lot of humour. Taking the crux out of Hareesh’s short story, they have developed a screenplay which explores the beastly side of man. The director is of the opinion that it is an idea that hasn’t been explored much before in Malayalam.

Though the makers are yet to announce the cast, it is said that Vinayakan and Sabumon Abdusamad are also playing major roles in it. The movie’s technical crew comprises of ‘Angamaly Diaries’ composer Prashanth Pillai and cinematographer Girish Gangadharan. Deepu Joseph is handling the edits and Renganaath Ravee is in charge of the sound design.

Cinematographer Suresh Rajan impresses with his work in Thottappan

Vinayakan starrer ‘Thottappan’ has got good response from the critics and is doing decently well in the theatres. The movie directed by Shanavas K Bavakutty tells an intense story of a teenager and her godfather. PS Rafeeque penned the movie’s screenplay based on the book of the same name by Francis Noronha.

While ‘Thottappan’ is getting appreciation for its performances, another striking element of the movie is its cinematography. DOP Suresh Rajan has done an excellent job in capturing the beauty of Kochi’s islets, where the plot is set in. Much of the events occur at night, and Suresh Rajan’s framing plays a major part in the overall aesthetics of the movie.

Suresh Rajan is a pass out from Ernakulam’s famous Maharajas College. He did his graduation with the likes of Rajeev Ravi, Amal Neerad and Anwar Rasheed, all of whom have now made a mark in the Malayalam film industry.
