Valiya Perunnal: Joju, Soubin and Shane Nigam in Anwar Rasheed’s next production

Anwar Rasheed is one of the most trusted names in the Malayalam film industry. The ‘man with the midas touch’, Anwar has not had a failure in his 14-year-long career. All his films – both as a director and producer – have been well received. As we already know, he is making his comeback as a filmmaker after a five-year-long gap with the Fahadh Faasil starrer ‘Trance’. The latest we hear is that Anwar is also set to produce a new film titled ‘Valiya Perunnal’.

Debutant Dimal Dennis is directing the movie which reportedly has Joju George, Soubin Shahir and Shane Nigam in the leads. Other details regarding the genre or the movie’s nature is not yet known. All the three lead actors are extremely talented and have been part of many quality films of late. With someone like Anwar Rasheed involved in the production, ‘Valiya Perunnal’ also promises to be a good film.

Shoot for the movie has already been wrapped up and the makers are planning an Eid release. An official announcement with details regarding the full cast and crew is likely to be made in the coming days.

Mohanlal receives Padma Bhushan award

The Padma award distribution ceremony was held in New Delhi today. President of India Ram Nath Kovind honoured the award winners in the event. Legendary Malayali actor Mohanlal received the Padma Bhushan, the nation’s third highest civilian award, from the President.

Padma Bhushan is yet another feather on Mohanlal’s four decade long remarkable acting career. A winner of multiple National awards, the veteran has worked in over 300 languages. Though he predominately starred in Malayalam movies, he has also done some notable roles in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi movies.

From Kerala, actor Mohanlal and former ISRO cryogenic division head Nambi Narayanan were honoured with Padma Bhushan awards. Three other Malayalis – Swami Vishudhananda, singer KG Jayan and archaeologist KK Muhammed were awarded the Padma Shri. Keralites who won the awards will be felicitated by Delhi Malayalis at Kerala House today evening.

Jayaram and Kannan Thamarakkulam reunite for ‘Pattabhiraman’

Last day, it was officially announced that Jayaram and director Kannan Thamarakkulam will be coming together for the fourth time. Their new movie was announced has been titled as ‘Pattabhiraman’. Jayaram plays the titular role in the movie, which comes with the tagline ‘Iyer The Great’. Dinesh Pallath has scripted the movie, which is set in Thiruvananthapuram. Abraham Mathew is producing the movie under the banner of of Abaam Movies.

Jayaram-Kannan Thamarakkulam duo have previously teamed up for ‘Thinkal Muthal Velli Vare’, ‘Aadupuliyattam’ and ‘Achayans’. The former two also were scripted by Dinesh Pallath. While ‘Thinkal Muthal Velli Vare’ was a failure, the other two films overcame critical panning to have decent run at the box office. It remains to be seen what the trio of Jayaram, Kannan Thamarakkulam and Dinesh Pallath have in store this time.

Jayaram is currently working on Aneesh Anwar’s ‘Grand Father’. He has also signed for a movie titled ‘Marconi Mathai’, which will also mark the Malayalam debut of popular Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi.

The brief final schedule of ‘Oru Yamandan Premakadha’ (OYP) is currently underway. A song and few patch up portions are being shot right now. Last day, the team celebrated the birthday of lead actress Nikhila Vimal on the movie’s sets. Dulquer, Jacob Gregory, scriptwriter duo Bibin George-Vishnu Unnikrishnan and dance choreographer Prasanna were present for the cake cutting.

After a super successful 2018, Nikhila will be hoping to continue the good run this year. Last year, both her releases in Malayalam – ‘Aravindante Athidhikal’ and ‘Njan Prakashan’ emerged as big hits at the box office. Her performance in the former also won her widespread appreciation. Her first release this year will be the Nadirshah directorial ‘Mera Naam Shaji’, in which she stars alongside Asif Ali, Biju Menon and Baiju.

In ‘Oru Yamandan Premakadha’, Nikhila will be seen as the one of the two female leads; Samyuktha Menon being the other. The movie touted to be a mass entertainer marks the comeback of Dulquer to Malayalam after over a year. This highly anticipated movie is expected to hit screens in April.

Santosh Sivan to direct a mythological film based on Lord Ayyappa

Ever since ‘Baahubali’, spectacle-heavy big scale films have been aplenty in Indian cinema. Filmmakers across the country are planning period-epic and mythological films. A handful of such projects have been announced in Malayalam as well. It now seems like Santosh Sivan is also set to direct one such biggie. The ace cinematographer-turned-filmmaker will be helming a mythological film based on Lord Ayyappa.

Gokulam Gopalan, who last produced the big budget ‘Kayamkulam Kochunni’, is producing this film as well. Pre-production works have already started and they are planning to start shooting by August this year. The producer confirmed the same in a recent interview to TOI. According to him, the film scripted by newcomer Prashanth will be based on Lord Ayyappa but told from a different perspective.

It is worth mentioning that August Cinema is also making a film on Ayyappa with Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead. The movie titled as ‘Ayyappan’ will be directed by Shankar Ramakrishnan. As per producer Shaji Nadeshan, their film will tell the authentic life story of Ayyappan. He is quoted saying, “The deity worshipped in Sabarimala is a form of Shasta; but the movie will focus on his life as a man. Ayyappan was a prince, a warrior and a revolutionary, and the research for the film has mined those stories from Pandalam palace.”

It will be really interesting to see two films being made on the same subject, that too in such quick succession. Santosh Sivan’s film has been planned as a multilingual in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. A star-studded cast is expected to be signed for the film. The makers have already had talks with maestro AR Rahman and Anushka Shetty; an official confirmation regarding the same will be made shortly.

Santosh Sivan meanwhile has another film in Malayalam coming up. Titled as ‘Jack and Jill’, the movie has Kalidas Jayaram and Manju Warrier in the leads. Shoot for the movie is currently in the final stages and is likely to hit screens by mid 2019.

Kalabhavan Shajohn’s maiden film as a director, ‘Brother’s Day’, got launched today in Kochi. The movie starring Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role is touted to be a commercial mass entertainer. Today’s launch event was attended by several prominent names from the industry. Listin Stephen’s Magic Frames is producing the movie.

As per our sources within the industry, ‘Brother’s Day’ has four heroines – Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prayaga Rose Rose Martin, Aima Rose Sebastian and Miya George. Among the four, only Miya has acted with Prithviraj previously. They haveshared screen space in ‘Memories’, ‘Anarkali’ and ‘Pavada’. ‘Brother’s Day’ being a regular potboiler will be a refreshing change from the experimental films that Prithviraj has been doing a lot of late. This one is expected to be a full-on mass entertainer with all necessary commercial elements in it.

The movie has cinematography by Jithu Damodar, songs composed by Nadirshah and background score by 4 Musics. Shoot is expected to commence shortly.

Kalidas Jayaram’s new movie ‘Happy Sardar’ recently started rolling in Punjab. The actor plays a Punjabi Sardar named Happy Singh in the film. A few stills of the actor in a typical Punjabi attire with the turban has leaked online. Malayalam cinema has always had a special connection with Punjab and its culture, courtesy films like ‘Punjabi House’, ‘Mallu Singh’ and the more recent ‘Godha’.

‘Happy Sardar’ marks the debut of writer-director couple Sudip Joshy and Geethika Sudip. According to the makers, the movie is a fun entertainer that has a love story between a Punjabi and a Malayali Christian girl at its core. Merin Philip plays the female lead in the movie.

There is also an elaborate supporting cast comprising of Siddique, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Shanthi Krishna, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Siddhi Mahajankatti, Vishak Nair, Ramesh Pisharody, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Praveena and Baiju Santhosh.

DOP Abhinandam Ramanujam, composer Gopi Sunder and editor Shameer Muhammed form the core technical crew. The movie is produced jointly by Achicha Cinemas and Malayalam Movie Makers.

Dileep’s next movie titled as ‘Shubharathri’ will be helmed by Vyasan KP. The director last helmed the critically acclaimed film, ‘Ayal Jeevichiruppund’. He had also written the screenplay for ‘Avatharam’, which also had Dileep in the lead. ‘Shubharathri’ scripted by Vyasan is based on some real life events. As per the makers, the movie will have high scope of performance for the lead actors.

Along with Dileep, the movie also stars veteran actor Siddique in a prominent role. Anu Sithara has been roped in as the female lead.
The movie has a solid supporting cast comprising of Nedumudi Venu, Sai Kumar, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Indrans, Nadirshah, Hareesh Peradi, Manikandan, Saiju Kurup, Sudhi Koppa, Santhosh Keezhattoor, Prashanth, Shanthi Krishna, Asha Sarath, Sheelu Abraham, KPAC Lalitha and Thesni Khan.

Bijibal will be handling the music department in the movie. Aroma Mohan is producing and distributing the movie, shoot for which is set to commence next week.

We were among the first to report about Vineeth Sreenivasan starring in a movie titled ‘Manoharam’. The movie went on floors today with a formal switch on. The movie is directed by Anwar Saddiq and produced by Jos Chakkalakal of Chakkalakal Films. Today’s launch was attended by many celebrities from the industry.

‘Manoharam’ is Vineeth Sreenivasan’s next after he delivered the superhit ‘Aravindante Athidhikal’ last year. Vineeth has worked previously with director Anwar Sadiq in ‘Ormayundo Ee Mukham’, which was released in 2014.

Along with Vineeth Sreenivasan, the movie also has a good lineup of supporting actors. Indrans, Basil Joseph, Deepak Parambol, Hareesh Perady, Jude Anthany Joseph, VK Prakash, Delhi Ganesh, Ahmed Siddique, Nisthar Sait, Manju Sunil, Kalaranjini, Sreelekshmi, Veena Nair and Nandini are already confirmed in the cast. A bunch of newcomers will also be part of the movie.

‘Manoharam’ has cinematography by Jebin Jacob and music by Sajeev Thomas, a former associate of maestro AR Rahman. Edits will be handled by Nithin Raj.
