‘Joseph’ writer Shahi Kabir’s next with Tovino titled ‘Aaravam’

Joju George starrer ‘Joseph’ was one of the most acclaimed films in Malayalam last year. The movie’s screenplay by Shahi Kabir, a real life policeman, was appreciated by critics and commoners alike. Now the writer is set to team up with young star Tovino Thomas for a movie titled ‘Aaravam’. Debutant Jithu Ashraf will be directing the movie, title poster of which was shared online last day. The poster is designed like a ‘chundan vallam’, so we presume the plot is set in Kuttanad and surrounding areas.

‘Aaravam’ has a formidable technical crew. Abhinandan Ramanjunam, well known for his excellent work in ‘Amen’, ‘Mosayile Kuthira Meenukal’ and the recently released ‘9’, will be cranking the camera. Jyothish Shankar is the art director and Renganaath Ravee will be handling the sound design. Haseeb Haneef, Aji Medayil and Noushad Alathur are jointly producing the movie under the banners of Achicha Films and Malayalam Movie Makers. Details regarding the supporting cast and when shoot commences will be announced shortly.

Tovino Thomas meanwhile is busy shooting for ‘Luca’. After that he will be joining the sets of ‘Kalki’, a mass entertainer in which he will be playing a cop. ‘Uyare, ‘And The Oscar Goes To’, ‘Virus’ and ‘Kilometers and Kilometers’ are his other upcoming films.

Mohanlal to start shooting for Ittymaani Made In China after Marakkar Arabikadalinte Simham

Mohanlal has a slew of projects lined up for this year. He is currently shooting in Hyderabad for ‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’. Shoot for his portions are expected to be over by April. After that he will start shooting for ‘Ittymaani Made In China’, which is to be directed by debutants Jibi and Joju. If things turn out as per plans, the movie will go on floors by April itself. After the completion of ‘Ittymaani’, Mohanlal will be joining with director Siddique for ‘Big Brother’, which is scheduled to start rolling in June.

According to trustworthy reports, ‘Ittyamani Made in China’ will be an out and out comedy entertainer. Mohanlal will be speaking in Thrissur accent in the film. Interestingly, it is after three long decades that the actor will speaking in this particular slang. Last time, he played a typical Thrissur native was in Padmarajan’s cult-classic, ‘Thoovanathumbikal’. Mohanlal’s performance and his delightful dialogue delivery in the movie is still fresh among the Malayali audience.

Antony Perumbavoor is producing ‘Ittymaani’ under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas. More details are expected to be revealed shortly.

Jayasurya to play a mysterious drunkard in Vellam

Recently, it was announced that Jayasurya would be teaming up with his ‘Captain’ director Prajesh Sen for a movie titled ‘Vellam’. The makers had also released an intriguing first look poster through Jayasurya’s official social media handle. ‘Vellam’, scripted by Prajeesh, is the story of a mysterious drunkard based in Kannur. The lead character to be played by Jayasurya is said to be a very challenging one.

Apparently, the actor gave open dates for the project as he was highly impressed by Prajesh’s narration. More details regarding the supporting cast and technical crew members will be announced shortly. The movie is being produced by Friendly Productions. The makers are planning to start shooting by May.

Director Prajesh is currently in Mumbai assisting Madhavan in his directorial debut, ‘Rocketry – The Nambi Effect’, which is the biopic of former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan. Prajesh had earlier planned Nambi Narayanan’s biopic with Mammootty in the lead, but it didn’t materialize due to some technical reasons. He later made a documentary on Nambi Narayanan.

Jayasurya on the other hand is on a break after working in multiple projects back to back last year. Apart from ‘Vellam’, the only other film he has signed for is ‘Turbo Peter’ with Midhun Manuel Thomas. A third part in the Aadu series is also on cards.

Nivin Pauly in Gauthami Nair’s directorial debut ‘Vritham’ starring Sunny Wayne

As we has reported earlier, actress Gauthami Nair is turning a director with a neo-noir crime drama titled ‘Vritham’. The movie has Sunny Wayne in the lead. Durga Krishna of ‘Vimaanam’ fame and Jumana Khan play the two heroines. Our sources within the industry inform that the movie will have another big star presence in Nivin Pauly. He will be appearing in a 20-minute-long extended cameo role in the movie. It is said to be a very prominent character with mass elements in it.

‘Vritham’ is scripted by KS Aravind and Daniel Sayooj Nair, who are also the scriptwriters of Dulquer Salmaan’s upcoming movie, ‘Kuruppu’. Anoop Menon, Shamna Kasim, Sreenivasan, Saiju Kurup, Aju Varghese, Jacob Gregory, Aneesh Gopalan, Vini Viswalal and Bibin Perumballikunnel are also part of the cast.

Interestingly, the movie has a lot of women technicians handling key departments. Sharanya Chander, a former associate of Nirav Shah, is cranking the camera and music is by Neha S Nair and Yakzan Gary Pereira. Ashwini Kale is the art director and costumes are taken care of by State award winner Stephy Xavior. Olivia Seira Raiju of Trivandrum Talkies is producing the movie.

Vritham’s shoot commenced last December. The team had a month long schedule in Thiruvananthapuram. They still have five days more of shoot left, which will be commencing in March.

Big Brother: Siddique’s next with Mohanlal to start rolling in June

Last October, it was officially announced that Mohanlal and veteran director Siddique will be teaming up for a movie titled ‘Big Brother’. But since that announcement, there have been no further updates. The latest we hear is that the makers have planned to start shooting from June. Reportedly, the first schedule of shoot has been planned to commence by June 10 in Bangalore.

Siddique has already informed that ‘Big Brother’ will be a big budget film loaded with action and humour. He last worked with Mohanlal in ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’, which was released back in 2013. Though the movie was released amidst huge expectations, it failed to impress the viewers and flopped at the box office. The duo will be trying to rectify the mistakes and reap success mark this time. Pre-production works including casting are still progressing for their new movie.

Mohanlal meanwhile is busy shooting in Hyderabad for ‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’. He recently finished his portions for ‘Kaappaan’, the upcoming Tamil film which also stars Suriya in the lead. Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’. ‘Ittymaani Made In China’ with director duo Jibi-Joju and an untitled film with Arun Gopy are his other projects in the pipeline. His next release will be the Prithviraj directorial ‘Lucifer’, which is scheduled to hit screens by March end.

Shah Rukh Khan to star in the Hindi remake of Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel

Dileep starrer Kodathi Samaksham Balan hit screens across Kerala last Friday (February 21). The movie written and directed by B Unnikrishnan has Dileep playing an advocate with a stuttering problem. Mamta Mohandas plays the female lead. Others in the cast include Priya Anand, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Aju Varghese, Renji Panciker, Vamsi Krishna, Harish Uthaman, ‘Kalakeya’ Prabhakar, Bindu Panicker and Siddique.

The movie has taken a decent opening at the Kerala box office. Though the critic reviews have been mixed, theatre response suggests that common audience have lapped up the movie. After having less occupancy in the initial shows, it has gradually picked up which is evident from the booking status in major centres.

Meanwhile, there is a buzz going around that the movie is getting a Bollywood version. It is said that Shah Rukh Khan would be reprising Dileep’s role from the original. Though an official confirmation in this regard is still awaited, chances of a Hindi remake cannot be dismissed entirely. ‘Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel’ is produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, a production giant based in Bollywood. If the script is reworked slightly, it will certainly appeal to the Bollywood audience.

The movie falls under the genre of a suspense-drama-cum-thriller with comedy elements in it. Dileep’s role of a struggling lawyer with a stuttering problem is quite challenging. It will be interesting to see how Shah Rukh or any other actor who stars in the remake version portarys this particular role.

The movie’s trailer was released last day in social medias. Directed by debutant Anil RRaj, the movie is touted to be a family oriented thriller with all commercial elements. It is being produced under the banner of Smruthi Cinemass.

‘Soothrakkaran’ has a big supporting cast comprising of Lalu Alex, Siddique, Vijayaraghavan, Gregory Jacob, Kailash, ‘Marimayam’ Sreekumar, Padmaraj Ratheesh, Santhosh Keezhatoor, Shammi Thilakan, Varsha Bollamma, Maala Parvathy and Sarayu Mohan.

Wichu Balamurali has penned the movie’s story, lyrics and has also handled the music department. Screenplay are dialogues are by Anil RRaj. Anil Nair has cranked the camera and Zian Sreekanth is in charge of the edits. The movie is being produced by Tomi K Varghese and Wichu Balamurali. Magic Frames will be releasing the movie in Kerala. The Malayalam industry has taken pretty good start this new year with a couple of big hits already in ‘Vijay Superum Pournamiyum’ and ‘Kumbalangi Nights’. The real game is yet to begin as the summer season kicks in from the end of March. The two big Ms of Malayalam cinema have a release each lined up for this season. Mohanlal’s ‘Lucifer’ is scheduled for release on March 28 while Mammootty’s ‘Madura Raja’ is slated to hit screens during the Vishu weekend.

Both ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Madura Raja’ are mass entertainers that will be a refreshing change from the feel-good, realistic films that is the currently trend in Malayalam industry. The smashing success of films like ‘Pulimurugan’ have proven that there is always a market for mass flicks and both the aforementioned films have the potential to set the box office on fire.

‘Lucifer’ is a project that carries the burden of hype immense hype right from the moment it was announced. Actor Prithviraj is making his directorial debut with this movie, and that too with a superstar like Mohanlal in the lead, expectations are bound to be massive. Murali Gopy is scripting this movie, which is touted to be a political thriller. The movie’s star studded cast also has Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Manju Warrier and Vivek Oberoi.

Mammootty’s ‘Madura Raja’ is also an eagerly awaited film. The Vysaksh directorial has Mammootty reprising his character from the 2010 blockbuster film, ‘Pokkiri Raja’. Udhayakrishna, who wrote the original along with Sibi K Thomas, has scripted this one independently. ‘Madura Raja’ has sky-high expectations majorly due to the fact that Vysakh-Udhayakrishna team’s last film ‘Pulimurugan’ emerged as a record breaking blockbuster. Mammootty fans are hoping that the duo can repeat the success this time as well. Almost the same technical team from ‘Pulimurugan’ has been retained for thie movie.

With just two weeks gap between the release of ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Madura Raja’, trade experts are hoping to witness solid returns during the summer box office. If both these movies live up to the hype, then it will be a huge booster for the industry on a whole. Let’s keep the fingers crossed.

‘An International Local Story’ is scripted jointly by Ranjith, Eben and Saneesh. As the title suggests, the movie promises to be a out and out fun entertainer. The movie has a huge star cast comprising of both youngsters and veterans. Rahul Madhav, Deepak Parambol, Manoj K Jayan, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Kalabhavan Shajon, Bijukuttan, Salim Kumar, Suresh Krishna, Nandu, Jaffer Idukki, Tini Tom, ‘Kuttanadan Marpapa’ fame Surabhi Santhosh, Namitha, Kunchan and Baiju Santhosh are part of the elaborate cast.

As informed earlier by the makers, the trailer of ‘Super Deluxe’ has been released online. The movie directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s has an ensemble star cast lead by Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Samantha, Mysskin, Gayatri and Ramya Krishnan. The movie is scheduled to hit screens on March 29.

Super Deluxe is an anthology film in which Vijay Sethupathi plays the role of a transgender. The movie’s director Thiagarajan Kumararaja enjoys a huge fan following among the Tamil cinema audience. His debut film, ‘Aaranya Kaandam’, was a cult-hit and went on to bag a couple of National awards as well. Expectations are naturally high as he is making a comeback after an eight-year-long gap.

‘Super Deluxe’ also has a formidable technical crew. Directors Mysskin and Nalan Kumarasamy have penned the movie’s dialogues. PS Vinod, noted for his work in several hit Bollywood movies, is the cinematographer and Yuvan Shankar Raja is in charge of the music department.
