Vada Chennai Review: Dhanush and Vetrimaaran deliver a masterpiece!

After years of waiting, the first part from Dhanush-Vetrimaaran combo’s gangster trilogy, ‘Vada Chennai’, has hit screens today. Expectations were massive ever since its announcement and let’s see if the movie has lived up to the hype.

‘Vada Chennai’ is an epic gangster saga traversing different timelines. It’s a completely realistic take on how the shady gangster world of North Chennai functions. Their lives have been showcased authentically without any sort of gimmicks. The survival politics discussed in the film is real and relevant. Like in ‘Aadukalam’ and ‘Polladhavan’, Vetrimaaran has done a lot of research here as well and that study has reflected on the total quality of the movie. Kudos to the censor board officials as well for not muting the dialogues, which would have had a big impact on the overall grittiness.

With his excellent writing skills, Vetrimaaran has developed numerous characters with ample space for each one of them. Their character arcs are convincing and very much in sync with the flow of the narrative. The screenplay is non-linear with several twists and turns. The drama that unfolds is gripping and keeps throwing interesting scenes one after the other. It is a screenplay that can be used by film aspirants for academic purposes.

On the performance side, every single actor who comes on screen manage to impress. The movie has a host of characters and all the actors have all been cast perfectly. Can’t take names as almost everyone has equal space to perform and they have all done justice to their parts. Santhosh Narayanan’s music complements the mood of the film, especially the trumpet score used in the slo-mo sequences.

Simply put, Vada Chennai is another extraordinary work coming from the camp of Vetrimaaran and Dhanush. Already, can’t wait for the other two parts to come out.

‘The Pirates of Diego Garcia’ to be made on a much bigger scale than ‘Kayamkulam Kochunni’

As we had reported earlier, Nivin Pauly and Rosshan Andrrews are planning to make a big budget period movie with sea as the backdrop. The movie has been titled as ‘The Pirates of Diego Garcia’ and initial works for it are currently underway. It is said to be the dream project of the actor-director duo and they will also be funding this movie.

Rosshan Andrrews is scripting the movie after doing some research works. Interestingly, this is also the director’s maiden outing as a scriptwriter. Initially, writer Unni R was supposed to script the movie but he later opted out due to some unknown reasons. The movie is said to be a survival story based on some true events that occurred in the pre-independence era. Several foreign technicians will be associated with this project.

Meanwhile, ‘Kayamkulam Kochunni’ continues to do extraordinary business at all the centres. Releasing on October 11, the movie opened to massive numbers at the box office. As per the makers, the movie has earned a whopping Rs 34 crores in just four days of its theatrical run. It is well on course to become one of the highest grossing Malayalam movies all time.

The massive success of ‘Kayamkulam Kochunni’ is certain to inspire Rosshan and Nivin to invest more on their upcoming movie.

Nivin Pauly and Rajeev Ravi to team up for a new film before the already announced NN Pillai biopic

Nivin Pauly is currently on cloud nine as his latest release, ‘Kayamkulam Kochunni’, continues to do phenomenal business. As per the makers, the movie has earned Rs 34 crores from its first four days of theatrical run. This is huge considering the limitations of the Malayalam industry. Nivin’s performance in the movie has also been noted with critics praising him for the efforts he had put in to play the character.

Not one to stay within his comfort zone, Nivin has been experimenting a lot lately. He currently has ‘Mikhael’, a family thriller with Haneef Adeni and ‘Love Action Drama’, a rom-com with Dhyan Sreenivasan on the floors. The actor has also committed for a couple of biggies with Rajeev Ravi and Jomon T John.

Last year, it was announced that Rajeev Ravi will be directing Nivin in the biopic of legendary theatre artist and freedom fighter, NN Pillai. While there has been no further updates about the project, we now hear that Nivin and Rajeev Ravi will be teaming up for another film very soon. The actor himself revealed this in a recent interview to a national daily.

When prodded about his upcoming projects, he is quoted saying, “There is a new project with Rajeev Ravi, which we might do before the already announced N N Pillai biopic. The scripting of Rosshan Andrrews’ ‘Diego Garcia’ and Jomon T John’s ‘Kairali’ are going on.”

The National award winning cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Rajeev Ravi is a much revered personality in the Malayalam industry. All his three directorial works – ‘Annayum Rasoolum’, ‘Njan Steve Lopez’ and ‘Kammatipaadam’ – were widely acclaimed and are the favourites of Malayali cinephiles. When he teams up with Nivin Pauly, expectations will naturally be high. An official announcement of their new movie is expected to be made shortly.

Brother’s Day: Prithviraj to star in Kalabhavan Shajohn’s directorial debut!

We were among the first to report about actor Kalabhavan Shajohn turning a director. Two years back, Shajohn had pitched a script to Prithviraj. The latter was impressed by the subject and had asked Shajohn to develop it into a full fledged script. Since the star was busy with other commitments, the movie had to be put on hold. After two years, the project is finally materializing as the official announcement was made by Prithviraj today through his social media handle. The movie has been titled as ‘Brother’s Day’ and according to him, it will be a complete commercial entertainer.

Sharing the title poster, Prithviraj has written,

Couple of years back, Shajon chetan (Yup..our own Kalabhavan Shajon) came to me and read a fully bound script that he had written. He wanted me to act in it and also take a call on who would be the best choice to direct his script. But in the way he had written it, and in the detailing of his narration..it was pretty obvious to me that only one person could direct his script. HIMSELF! This is about fun guys! Comedy, Action, Romance, Fun and Emotion.
Announcing.. Kalabhavan Shajon’s directorial debut…BROTHER’S DAY!

#BrothersDay

Shajohn is the latest entrant to the club of actor-turned-directors in Malayalam industry. Actors like Prithviraj Sukumaran, Dhyan Sreenivasan, Ramesh Pisharody and Harisree Ashokan have all took up the director’s hat recently. Shajohn, who started his career as a mimicry artist, had his big break with the Jeethu Joseph directorial ‘Drishyam’. The movie earned him widespread appreciation and was later offered meaty roles in several films. He is currently playing a major role in Mohanlal starrer ‘Lucifer’, which interestingly marks the directorial debut of Prithviraj.
