Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kaala satellite rights sold for Rs 75 crores?

It is no secret that Rajinikanth commands a massive fan following, not just in Tamil Nadu but in the whole of India. His movies have always been known for doing tremendous business. As per latest reports, the satellite rights of his upcoming movie Kaala has been sold for a whopping price. Reportedly, market leader Star TV has acquired the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi rights of the movie for Rs 75 crores. This is said to be second highest for a South Indian movie.

Earlier, Rajinikanth’s own 2.O had set a new record among Indian movies for the highest satellite rights. Broadcast rights for the Shankar directorial was sold for a staggering Rs 110 crores to Zee TV. The presence of another superstar in Akshay Kumar and also the fact that it was the sequel of Enthiran (Robot in Hindi) helped 2.0 bag such a big deal. But Kaala’s market entirely lies on Rajinikanth’s shoulders.

Kaala does not have a well known director, nor does it have a top heroine or other big names in the cast. Rajinikanth’s last outing Kabali, which was also with the same director Pa Ranjith, did not yield the expected results at the box office. Inspite of all that, the satellite rights of Kaala going for such a huge amount speaks volumes on the superstar’s popularity.

Kaala is basically a commercial gangster flick based in the Mumbai underworld. It is about a guy from Tirunelveli, who runs away in his childhood to Mumbai to become a powerful don living in the slums. Rajinikanth plays this character, Kaala, who heads the Tamil community in the slums of Dharavi.

Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi is playing the female lead, but she is not paired opposite Rajinikanth. Multiple national award winner Nana Patekar plays the antagonist. Rajinikanth’s son-in-law and actor Dhanush is producing Kaala under his banner Wunderbar Films Pvt Ltd. The movie is slated for a grand summer release on April 27.

Official: Madhvan to star in scientist Nambi Narayanan’s biopic!

Madhavan is currently basking in the huge success of his crime thriller web series Breathe. The first season which was released at Amazon Prime Video has won rave reviews from the viewers. Madhavan’s stellar performance in a grey shaded role has been getting widespread appreciation. The actor is now getting ready for the biopic of scientist Nambi Narayanan.

Nambi Narayanan was a rocket scientist who worked at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). In 1994, he was falsely charged with espionage and arrested. The charges against him were later dismissed by the CBI in 1996, and the Supreme Court declared him not guilty in 1998.

This upcoming movie is based on Nambi Narayanan’s book ‘Ready to fire: How India and I survived the ISRO spy case’, which details about the controversial case and his infamous arrest. In the book, he has written about the mental trauma he suffered during the spy case framed against him. So, Madhavan has a highly challenging project ahead of him.

Nambi Narayanan recently said that he is eagerly waiting to see how Madhavan plays him in the movie. Bollywood filmmaker Anant Mahadevan will be directing this movie, which is being planned as a trilingual in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu languages. More details regarding the title and the commencement of shoot will be announced soon.

Both Anwar Rasheed and Martin Prakkat have been instrumental in shaping Dulquer’s career into a successful one. His lovely note for his dear directors on their birthday sums up how important they have been in his career. He has written,

Dulquer worked in three films with Anwar and two with Martin. Though Second Show was his debut film, it was Ustad Hotel, directed by Anwar Rasheed, that made Dulquer a star. Riding on that stardom, he did ABCD with Martin which was again a superhit at the box office.

Dulquer later worked under Anwar Rasheed’s banner in the sensational hit film Bangalore Days. Next year came Martin Prakkat’s Charlie which went on to become a huge success, both critically and commercially. The movie sweeped a whopping 8 awards at the State level including the ones for best actor and director. Last year, Dulquer worked once again for Anwar Rasheed’s banner in Parava.

Confirmed: Kalidas Jayaram’s next is with Alphonse Puthren!

After a lot of postponing, Kalidas Jayaram’s Malayalam debut as a lead actor Poomaram got released last Friday. The movie directed by Abrid Shine is getting good reviews from the critics. After a slow start, the movie is gradually picking up at the box office thanks to the positive word-of-mouth. Kalidas’ matured performance as Gautham, a cordial student leader, has also earned him appreciation.

Kalidas will next team up with the highly promising Alphonse Puthren for a Tamil movie. After delivering the sensational blockbuster ‘Premam’ in 2015, Alphonse had gone off the limelight. Last year, the director announced that he was working on a new project which would be a musical in Tamil.

Speculations were rife that Kalidas and Siddharth are being considered for the lead roles in the movie. Kalidas is already confirmed but Siddharth’s part is not yet known. In in a recent interview, Kaliads opened up about how excited he is about the movie. He informed that the script was locked only a few days back, so they haven’t decided on the shooting dates or anything. A final call will be taken only after a few rounds of discussions.

It would be interesting to see what Alphonse Puthren is coming up with this time. His debut film ‘Neram’ was a commercially successful Tamil-Malayalam bilingual while ‘Premam’ was a sensational success all across South India. Riding on the success of these two movies, Alphonse has already carved a niche for himself in the industry.

For his upcoming movie, Alphonse has retained his two trusted friends/technicians – cinematographer Anend C Chandran and composer Rajesh Murugesan. The movie’s official announcement is expected to be made very soon.

It’s commendable for Dulquer and Keerthy Suresh to take up a movie like Mahanati: Prakash Raj

Mahanati, the upcoming biopic on legendary actress Savitri, is one of the most awaited movies in Telugu cinema this year. Nag Ashwin is directing the movie which has Keerthy Suresh playing the yesteryear actress. Dulquer Salmaan, Samantha, Vijay Devarakonda, Naga Chaitanya, Rajendra Prasad, Mohan Babu, Shalini Pandey and Prakash Raj are also part of the cast.

Dulquer Salmaan, who is making his Telugu debut, is playing Gemini Ganesan while Naga Chaitanya plays his real-life grand father Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) in the movie. Prakash Raj is essaying the role of popular Telugu cinema producer Chakrapani. Samantha and Vijay Devarakonda will be seen as journalists in the movie.

In a recent interview to TOI, Prakash Raj was asked about his experience working with youngsters like Dulquer and Keerthy. He is quoted saying, “Mahanati is an interesting biopic; a good assessment, at this point of time, of the magic and mystery of who Savitri was. I like actors who are trying to metamorphosis themselves, trying to get to know what cinema was back then, the thought processes of the people, what relationships meant then, what their personal choices were and the roles they played. It’s commendable for actors like Dulquer and Keerthy to take up these roles.”

Mahanati will trace Savitri’s life from the 1940s to 1980s and will feature those films she has acted with NT Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageshwara Rao and other legends from the Telugu and Tamil film industry. Savitri was briefly married to Gemini Ganesan and the movie will show some lesser known details about their relationship.

Since Savitri was hugely popular in all the southern film industries, the makers have planned the movie as a multilingual. The Tamil version is titled as ‘Nadigayar Thilagam’. A dubbed version in Malayalam is also in the planning. The movie produced by Vyjayanthi Movies is slated to hit screens worldwide on May 9.

After an impressive start with ‘Angamaly Diaries’, Antony Varghese is back with his next movie, ‘Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil’. The movie directed by Tinu Pappachan, a former associate of Lijo Jose Pellissery, has Vinayakan and Chemban Vinod Jose in other major roles. The official trailer of Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil was released last evening.

Top celebrities from Malayalam and Bollywood shared the trailer in their social media handles. Prithviraj, Nivin Pauly, Indrajith, Tovino Thomas, Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty and former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan released the trailer. The fact that such big stars came together itself caught the audience attention instantly.

The 1.42 minute trailer looks highly promising. It is loaded with raw and realistic action scenes. From what we get to see in the trailer, we presume that the major part of the story happens in a jail. Trailers and teasers are very essential to create the right kind of pre-release buzz for a movie. The makers of Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil have clearly succeeded in doing that. Soon after the trailer was shared by the above mentioned celebrities, it started trending virally in social medias.

Mammootty fans as well as the common audience have been eagerly waiting for the release of ‘Parole’. The music celebration and trailer launch of the movie was held last evening (March 17) evening at IMA House, Kochi. Trailer was later released through Mammootty’s official Facebook page.

Directed by Sharrath Sandith, Parole is a family entertainer with a political backdrop for the lead character. Mammootty plays ‘sakhav’ Alex in the movie. The narrative travels through three different phases of his life. Ajith Poojappura, a jailer in real life, has scripted Parole after being inspired from some real life incidents. The trailer shows glimpses of an intense story.

Ineya and Miya George essay the two female leads in the movie. While Ineya plays Mammootty’s wife, Miya will be seen as his sister. ‘Baahubali’ fame Prabhakar is also playing a significant part in the movie. Parole also has a solid line up of supporting actors like Siddique, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Krishna Kumar, Irshad, Sijoy Varghese, Sohan Seenulal, Lalu Alex, Sudheer Karamana, Alencier Ley and Muthumani.

Sharreth and Ellwyn Joseph are handling the music department in Parole. S Lokanathan is the cinematographer and editing is done by Suresh Urs. The movie is being produced under the banner of Antony D’Cruz Entertainment. The intriguing promos have successfully piqued the curiosity of the viewers, who are now waiting for. As informed earlier, the official trailer of Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil has been released today by the makers. From whatever little we get to see in the trailer, the movie promsies to be a raw action-packed entertainer. Director Tinu Pappachan is a former associate of Lijo Jose Pellissery and has worked in his cult blockbuster Angamaly Diaries, so an inspiration is clearly there to make a raw and realistic film.

Newcomer Dileep Kurian has scripted Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil. The movie has Antony playing Jacob, a Kottayam based youngster who works in a finance company. As the title suggests, the core plot of this movie evolves over certain incidents that occur on a single night which turns the protagonist’s life upside down.

Cinematographer Girish Gangadharan and editor Shameer Mohammed who worked in Angamaly Diaries are handling their respective departments in this movie as well. Jakes Bejoy is composing the songs and Deepak Alexander is in charge of the background score. The movie is being produced by BC Joshi and it will be presented by director B Unnikrishnan. Nivin Pauly-Nayanthara starrer Love Action Drama’s shoot pushed to May!

As we had reported earlier, actor Dhyan Sreenivasan is turning a director with a fun entertainer starring Nivin Pauly and Nayanthara. The movie titled ‘Love Action Drama’ (LAD) was initially planned to start rolling this month. But since Nivin Pauly is busy with the shoot of Kayamkulam Kochunni, the makers of LAD have decided to push the shoot to May.

Kayamkulam Kochunni still has two more brief schedules left. After the ongoing schedule in Goa, the team will be having a small break till Easter. They will then be heading to Sri Lanka for a 10-day shoot. If things go as per plans, Kayamkulam Kochunni will be wrapped up by the end of April and LAD will kick-start by the second week of May.

Meanwhile, Nivin will also be losing weight before LAD goes on floors. Apparently, his character in the movie demands a youthful look. So, he will have to shed the extra pounds that he had put on for Kayamkulam Kochunni. Nivin and Nayanthara are paired together for the first time and the audience are eagerly waiting to see their on-screen chemistry.

Dhyan’s Love Action Drama is a modern day take on the hit film ‘Vadakkunokkiyanthram’, directed by his father Sreenivasan. Interestingly, the lead characters in LAD are also named as Dineshan and Shobha. Following the announcement of the title and character names, it was speculated that the movie will be a spoof.

However, Dhyan, who has also scripted the movie, has clarified that it is not a spoof but a romantic comedy. Nivin Pauly’s character will have a few similarities to Dineshan of Vadakkunokkiyanthram, but there will be no other resemblance. Aju Varghese and Urvashi will also be seen in prominent roles in the movie.

Shaan Rahman will be handling the music department and Vivek Harshan has been signed as the editor. Aju Varghese is venturing into production by funding this movie jointly with Vishak Subramaniam under the banner of Funtastic Films.
