Then Big B, now The Great Father
It was back in 2007 when Mammootty teamed up with rookie filmmaker Amal Neerad, a noted cinematographer back then. Big B came in with minimum expectations and was released alongside Mohanlal’s much hyped Chotta Mumbai. Consequently, the Mammootty starrer went largely unnoticed. But once the DVDs was released, the movie saw an unprecedented reception from the viewers.
Big B was branded as a movie that was technically far ahead of it’s time. Amal Neerad’s slick direction, Sameer Thahir’s stunning visuals, Unni R’s dynamic one-liners and Gopi Sunder’s pulsating background score merged hand in hand to enhance the movie to another level. But above all it was Mammootty’s restrained and subtle performance as the stylish gangster Bilal, that was the USP of the movie. Over the years, Big B attained a cult status among the fans of stylish gangster movies.
Exactly 10 years later Mammootty is once again teaming with a newcomer. His upcoming release, The Great Father, written and directed by debutant Haneef Adeni is scheduled to hit the screens on March 30. To say the least, The Great Father is the most anticipated Mammootty movie in the past 5-6 years.
Similar to Big B, The Great Father has no big names in it’s technical crew. One big name is the production house, August Cinemas. The Great Father’s dashing posters have striking resemblance to Big B, with Mammootty once again sporting the stylish bearded look. Like Big B, The Great Father is also said to be a revenge drama. If the movie has a strong content to meet the expectation levels of the audience, then Great Father is absolutely certain to rewrite several pre-existing box office records in Mollywood.
