If Villain was not directed by me, reviewers would have rated it as a classic: B Unnikrishnan

Mohanlal’s latest outing Villain, directed by B Unnikrishnan continues to do decent business inspite of all the mixed reviews. The movie was released amidst tremendous hype on October 27. Fans and commoners who expected a mass action thriller were disappointed with Villain as the movie follows a very serious mood.

Villain is a slow paced thriller which is high on emotions and maintains an intense nature throughout the narrative. After the initial mixed reviews, Villain found its right audience among the families, who seemed to like the emotional factor in the movie. While a section rated Villain as a ‘class’ film, others thought it to be a half baked one with a pretentious philosophical style.

Unhappy with the negative reviews, director B Unnikrishnan has claimed that reviewers would have rated the movie as a classic had it been another director whose name had appeared in the credits.

About how he sees reviewers and their opinion, B Unnikrishnan said, “There is no film that has satisfied everyone. I read several reviews. The state of reviews today is pathetic. I have a past of doing cinema reviews very seriously. If you change Villain’s title credits of ‘written and directed by Unnikrishnan’ to some other name, the same reviewers would have unanimously praised the film as a classic.”

Apart from Mohanlal, Villain had stellar supporting cast comprising of Manju Warrier, Vishal, Hansika Motwani, Srikanth and Raashi Khanna. The latter four were making their Malayalam debut with Villain and they could not have asked for anything better than a Mohanlal starrer to start off with.

With no big films slated for release this month, Villain is expected to have a free run in the Kerala box office in the coming weeks. Rockline Venkatesh has funded the movie under his banner Rockline Films.

Wow! Akshay Kumar to sport 12 different looks in 2.0

Shankar’s 2.0 is unarguably the most anticipated Indian film of 2018. Two of Indian cinema’s biggest superstars – Akshay Kumar and Rajinikanth are sharing screen space for the first time and naturally expectations are sky-high. Some of the best available technicians, both from India and overseas are associated with this film. Lyca Productions is investing a mammoth budget of Rs 450 crores, which is the highest for any Indian fim currently under production.

Though 2.0 is the sequel of Enthiran, it is not a continuation but a follows an entirely different story. Rajinikanth will be seen reprising his characters of scientist Vaseegaran and Chitti, the robot. Akshay Kumar, who is making his South Indian debut, is playing the role of an evil scientist named Richard.

In the official posters released by the makers, Akshay is seen in a bird like avatar with feathers and claws. He patiently sat for the tiring makeup procedure that lasted for around five hours. But that is just one his looks. Interestingly, Akshay will be seen in twelve different looks in the movie.

The actor has worked tremendously hard to play this particular character. He strained himself hard to bring out a unique voice for the film. After he dubbed for his portions, it was further worked on by the Oscar award winning sound engineer Resul Pookutty, which has further enhanced it to give a great output.

Director Shankar has scripted the movie jointly with Jeyamohan. Academy Award winner A R Rahman is composing the music. Nirav Shah is wielding the camera. Legacy Effects, who have worked in movies like Avengers, Jurassic Park, Iron Man etc are working on 2.0’s animatronics department.

Following a never before seen kind of audio launch in Dubai, the makers are now gearing up for the teaser release event. Some big names from industries across the country are expected to attend the event which planned to be held in Hyderabad by the end of this month.

Mohanlal’s Kunjali Marakkar is planned on an international scale and will have actors from other industries too: Priyadarshan

Recently, ace filmmaker Priyadarshan revealed about his plans to make a period film based on Kunjali Marakkar with superstar Mohanlal in the lead. But when Mammootty along with August Cinema also announced a similar project on Kunjali Marakkar, the director said that he will drop his project if they go on floors within eight months as he did not want an unnecessary competition in the industry.

However, Priyadarshan was quick to add that if August Cinema’s project fails to go on floors within the next eight months, then he will definitely go ahead with his project. Santhosh T Kuruvilla of Moonshot Entertainment will be producing Mohanlal-Priyadarshan duo’s Kunjali Marakkar, if at all it happens.

Kunjali Marakkar was the title given to the naval chief in the 16th century, to protect the coast against the invading Portuguese army. There were four key Kunjali Marakkars during that era. Both Mohanlal’s and Mammootty’s films are based on the fourth naval chieftain as his story has the most interesting elements.

In a recent interview to TOI, Priyadarshan also opened up on how is planning to make this ambitious film. “Kunjali Marakkar IV has the most interesting story. He was the one who revolted against the Zamorins and was hanged. Most of his story happens in the sea and it’s never easy to shoot such a film in the sea. It has to be shot on par with international standards and needs to be appealing for the national audience with star cast from other industries too. Our film has been planned in such a way.”

From whatever little the director has said, we can make out that something extraordinary is on the cards. Let’s hope the makers of both these films sort out the issues and deliver the best possible outcome for the Malayali audience.

The movie based on the life Kerala’s most famous highwayman is scripted by the acclaimed writer duo of Bobby and Sanjay. Touted to be Nivin’s biggest till date, this upcoming movie is funded by Gokulam Gopalan’s Sri Gokulam Films.

As we had reported earlier, director Roshan Andrews will be joining hands with Nivin Pauly for another movie after the completion of Kayamkulam Kochunni. Kerala State award winner Unni R is scripting this movie. The director himself revealed this during a recent interview.

Apparently, Nivin listened to both the scripts at same time and immediately agreed to be part of it. The duo’s next film after Kayamkulam Kochunni will be a survival story based on some true events that occurred in Kerala. The plot is set in the backdrop of sea and will explore some lesser known facets of Capri mythology. The movie is being planned on a big canvas and talks are on with a foreign company for its production.

Roshan Andrews, however, did not reveal when he is planning to start shooting for the movie. Nivin currently has several projects down the line, both in Malayalam as well as in Tamil. We will have to wait for an official word from either side about when the project will actually go on floors.

Currently, the shoot of Kayamkulam Kochunni is progressing at a brisk pace in Mangalore and Uudpi. The team will next be moving to Sri Lanka for a month long schedule. The makers are eyeing to release the movie by March next year.

Pranav Mohanlal to lend his voice for an English track in Aadhi!

Pranav Mohanlal starrer Aadhi is currently the final stages of production. The final leg of shoot is currently progressing in Hyderabad. This highly anticipated film directed by Jeethu Joseph is eyeing a January release, most probably on the Republic Day.

Aadhi marks Pranav’s debut film as a lead actor. He is playing a musician film in the film. His character is a typical urban youth who is into music and dance. Interestingly, Pranav has penned and lent his voice for an English retro track in the movie. Now that is one more reason to wait for this film.

Anil Johnson, a regular in Jeethu Joseph films, is handling the music department in Aadhi as well. He will be recording Pranav’s song once the youngster returns back from Hyderabad after completing the final schedule.

Aadhi is touted to be an action packed entertainer. The recently released first look poster had Pranav performing a Parkour like stunt on a high rise building. As we had reported earlier, Parkour scenes will be one of the major highlights in Aadhi.

Parkour is a form of acrobatic physical training that involves crossing obstacles by running, climbing, jumping, rolling and swinging. Prior to the movie’s shoot, Pranav underwent Parkour training in Bangkok for a few months as his character in the movie demands such traits. Some highly stylish action sequences in the movie have been choreographed by foreign stunt masters.

Noted Telugu actor Jagpathi Babu, who was last seen in Malayalam in Mohanlal’s Pulimurugan, has been roped in to play the villain in Aadhi. Anusree, Alamara fame Aditi Ravi, Lena, Siju Wilson, Krishna Shankar Sharafudheen, Tony Luke, Siddique and Nobi are part of the supporting cast.

Priyadarshan says he’ll make Kunjali Marakkar with Mohanlal if Mammootty’s film doesn’t start in eight months!

On Kerala Priravi day, Malayali movie lovers woke up to a breaking news about two of their biggest superstars – Mohanlal and Mammootty. Both the actors are doing their own versions of Kunjali Marakkar. Ace filmmaker Priyadarshan first informed that he will be making a period film based on Kunjali Marakkar with Mohanlal in the lead. Following that came a similar announcement from Mammootty’s side.

After years of speculations, August Cinema finally announced their period film Kunjali Marakkar with Mammootty in the lead. Legendary cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Santhosh Sivan will be directing this biggie which is being penned jointly by TP Rajeev and Shankar Ramakrishnan.

After the announcement of Mammootty’s Kunjali Marakkar IV, there were reports about Priyadarshan planning to drop his film as he wished to avoid an unhealthy competition in the industry. But a recent interview to TOI, the director now said that he will go ahead with his film if August Cinema’s project with Mammootty does not go on floors in eight months time.

Apparently, August Cinema had told Priyadarshan that they would be doing the film three years back. But the project could not materialize then due to some unknown reasons. So this time director has decided to wait for about six to eight months. But if they are delaying it just to hinder his film, he is planning to go ahead with his ambitious project.

Priyadarshan also added that he will be dropping his film if August Cinema is doing it this time. The director does not want to see an unnecessary competition in the Malayalam film industry.
