Kamal Haasan picks his 70 favourite Indian films; Eight Malayalam movies in the list

Kamal Haasan is widely regarded as an encyclopedia of cinema due to his mastery and knowledge in almost all departments of filmmaking. He is rightly called as the ‘Sakalakala Vallavan’ of cinema. A winner of multiple national awards and numerous accolades, Kamal Haasan is a rare breed who has continuously strived hard to deliver quality films.

Recently, Kamal Haasan picked his 70 favourite Indian films for Hindustan Times on the ocassion of the country’s 70th independence week. The movies were from different Indian languages that were released after 1947.

Among the 70 films, seven Malayalam movies found its way to the list. Chemeen, Anubhavangal Paalichakal, Nirmalyam, Swapnadanam, Kodiyettam, Ee Naadu, Naamukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal and Thaniyavarathanam are the seven Malayalam movies in Kamal’s favourite films list. Along with each film, he has also written a short description.

Chemmeen :

Chemmeen ceased to be a Malayalam film, it became the pride of south India, a national film. It’s a grown-up love story. The music by Salil Chowdhury, the editing by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the direction by Ramu Kariat…today it looks like a simple film. But it’s stunning

Anubhavangal Paalichakal :

It was set in a jail. It had an astounding story with two of Malayalam cinema’s top stars. It was so suspenseful, so intriguing in the way it explored the human mind.

Nirmalyam :

What a film! I saw it twice on two successive days. I don’t think Malayalam cinema will dare to make a film like that again. The film revolved around a neglected temple and the people dependent on it.

Swapnadanam :

I am a fan of the film! It can be described as a marital psychodrama.

Kodiyettam :
Adoor has made so many beautiful films but the simplicity of Kodiyettam is unsurpassed.

Ee Nadu :

It’s brilliant for its multi-level narrative. T Damodaran was a schoolteacher-turned screenplay writer. One of the best films made by IV Sasi.

Naamukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal :

I was green with jealousy when I watched this film, it was so simple but so good. It is a romance drama.

Thaniyavarthanam :

This is a film about mental health and how the responsibility lies in everyone’s hands. It doesn’t talk directly about superstition, but in the end makes you very angry. My friend Mammootty did a brilliant job in the film.

Kamal Haasan has particularly mentioned that the films he has picked are his favourites from the ones he has seen. He clarifies that he has not seen every film and he has only included films that changed his life, as a man, as an actor.

Prithviraj’s Syamanthakam is definitely happening, we are still working on the project: Hariharan

Prithviraj’s Syamanthakam is definitely happening, we are still working on the project: Hariharan

Syamanthakam was a very ambitious project announced by veteran filmmaker Hariharan a few years ago. The director was planning to make the epic movie with Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead of Lord Sree Krishna. However, there were no updates about the movie for a long time which made people believe that the project has been dropped.

Finally, director Hariharan himself has come out informing that the project is definitely happening and that works are progressing for the same. In a recent interview to TOI, he is quoted saying, “The project will go on floors. We are now working out on which languages to make the movie as well as the rest of the details.”

Syamanthakam is one of the most famous chapters in Mahabharata in which a search is undertaken to find a stolen precious stone, named Syamanthakam. Lord Sree Krishna is the hero in this episode and it explores a variety of sides of the character, including the ones in which he is a warrior. It will not showcase Lord Krishna as a philosopher but also as a warrior and a lover.

Hariharan, who has also written the movie, said that script demands extensive utilisation of modern technology. If the project happens, it will be the first time in Indian cinema that Sree Krishna is presented in a heroic avatar. Reportedly, Prithviraj will be training in horse riding, martial arts and some other art forms to play this role.

Prithviraj currently has around 6-7 projects in his kitty which also includes another epic-mythological film based on the life of Karna from Mahabharatha. It is still not known when Syamanthakam will actually go on floors.

Salman Khan compensates Rs 32.50 crore to Tubelight distributors

In what is a very rare occurance in Bollywood, Salman Khan has refunded Rs. 32.50 crores to the distributors after his last release Tubelight flopped at the box office. The Kabir Khan directorial was released amid massive hype but failed miserably at the box office all across the globe.

Salman Khan, who was also one of the producers of the movie, had announced that he would be compensating the distributors for their losses. Salman’s father Salim Khan earlier said, “When a distributor suffers a loss, the producer needs to show some responsibility and share the burden. We, too, have done the same thing. We met a few of them and are trying to find a middle ground. We will pay back the distributors.”

Tubelight, released on June 23 was expected to be a big blockbuster especially since Salman was teaming up with Kabir Khan after the blockbuster success of Bhajrangi Bhaijaan. Audience, including hardcore fans, were disappointed to see an emotional family drama as Salman is popular for his larger than life characters and mass masala flicks. The film was expected to gross around Rs 300 crores but had to settled at less than Rs. 120 crores.

Right now, the talk in Bollywood medias is about the future of this trend of compensating the distributors. Shah Rukh Khan’s last release Jab Harry Met Sejal has also tanked the box office and it is to be seen if SRK will also reimburse the distributors.

Salman Khan is currently shooting for Tiger Zinda Hai, the sequel to his 2012 blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger. The movie, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar is scheduled for a Christmas release this year.
