Nivin Pauly and Tovino Thomas to play historic figures

Malayalam cinema is going through a great phase as the market of our films have evidently widened and new talents are storming the scene every Friday. Inspired by the success of movies like Baahubali and our own Pulimurugan, filmmakers are showing interest in making big budget movies.

Post the record-breaking success of the Baahubali series, there seems to be a special liking for period films in industries all across the country. Malayalam cinema also has a fair share of such films under the planning stages. Two of the most promising actors of this generation-Nivin Pauly and Tovino Thomas have already signed on to play historical figures.

Nivin Pauly, the more established actor among the two, is playing the role of Kayamkulam Kochunni in the upcoming movie of the same name directed by Roshan Andrews. Kayamkulam Kochunni is a famous rebel who has the image of an Indian Robinhood. The movie is being written by the National award winning duo of Bobby and Sanjay. They did extensive research works for over two years to script this film.

Nivin will be undergoing a complete makeover along with training in Kalaripayattu for playing the role of Kochunni. The movie will explore several unknown aspects of Kochunni’s life from how he became a rebel to his love life. Amala Paul has been roped in to play the female lead. This big budget venture is being produced by Sri Gokulam Films. Shoot for the movie will kick-start on the first week of September in Sri Lanka.

Tovino Thomas is essaying the role of Puthumana Panicker in the forthcoming movie titled as Chengazhi Nambiar. This period epic drama is written and directed by debutant Sidhil Subramanian. The movie will be based on the lives of Chengazhi Nambiar, Chandroth Panicker and many other historical figures who fought against Samoothiri in Maamaankam in 1505 AD.

The team has not yet released details about other cast members eventhough there are reports about leading stars from other industries being part of this movie. Chengazhi Nambiar is planned to be made as a multilingual on a massive budget of Rs 100 crores. Currently the pre-production works are progressing. Sources inform that the movie requires a lot of research works, so the pre-production itself will take around one year and the movie will go on floors only by 2018.

Shraddha Kapoor to play Prabhas’ pair in Saaho

Baahubali star Prabhas is currently shooting for Saaho, an upcoming multilingual directed by Sujeeth. The movie is highly anticipated by the audience as it is Prabhas’ first film in five years apart from the Baahuabli films. Saaho is a big budget project and the makers are roping in actors from various industries to give it a pan Indian appeal.

Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh was roped in to play the antagonist. Promising Tamil actor Arun Vijay was recently signed on to play a very important role in the film. Now according to latest reports, the makers are in talks with Bollywood diva Shraddha Kapoor to play Prabhas’ pair.

It must be remembered that Shraddha was initially approached for the movie but they dropped the idea of casting her as she demanded a huge sum as remuneration. Now it seems like she has decided to take a pay cut.

Ever since the project was announced, several names like Katrina Kaif, Disha Patani, Pooja Hegde and Anushka Shetty were doing the rounds. Reportedly, Anushka was confirmed to play the female lead before she got dropped owing to weight issues. An official confirmation about Shraddha’s casting is still awaited.

Saaho is produced by Vamsi Krishna Reddy and Pramod Uppalapati. To cash in on the huge popularity of Prabhas, the makers are releasing the film in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam languages.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is handling the music department and renowned cinematographer R Madhie is cranking the camera. International stuntman Kenny Bates, popular for his work in Hollywood films like Die Hard and Transformers has been roped in to choreograph the stunts in Saaho. The movie is expected to hit screens by the end of next year.

He has the habit of gifting every crew member something special after the completion of all his films and he has continued the same gesture once again.

Vijay has gifted over 200 gold coins to all the unit members of his upcoming Mersal. The news was confirmed by several sources close to the unit. Trade analyst Ramesh Bala tweeted,

Last time for Bairavaa, Vijay gifted gold chains to his director, cast members and other main technicians. Veterans in the industry have earlier said that Vijay, like the legendary MGR always tries to ensure that his unit members are paid well and get fair treatment during the shooting stages.

Meanwhile, shoot for Mersal has almost been wrapped up with only a few patch up scenes and a song left to be filmed. This Atlee directorial is one of the most expected Tamil films of the year. AR Rahman is scoring music for this movie, produced by Sri Thenandal Films.

The makers are planning for a grand audio launch, scheduled to be held on August 20. Reports suggest that the movie’s teaser will also be unveiled during the function. Vijay is playing a triple role in the film, a first such attempt in his career. Nithya Menon, Kajal Agarwal and Samantha Ruth Prabhu will be seen as the female leads. The movie is scheduled to hit screens worldwide in October, for this year’s Diwali.

Jayasurya-Ranjith Sankar team’s Punyalan Private Limited starts rolling

The duo of Ranjith Sankar and Jayasurya have delivered successful films like Punyalan Agarbathis, Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam and Pretham. They are coming together for the fourth time and this time for the sequel of their 2013 superhit film Punyalan Agarbathis.

Shoot for the movie, titled as Punyalan Private Limited, commenced today. Director Ranjith Sankar informed the news by releasing the first look poster through his official Facebook page.

Punyalan Agarbathis, released in 2013 was a socio-political satire. The movie is about an young entrepreneur Joy Thakkolkaran and his attempts to succeed in an ambitious business of incense sticks. The sequel is also expected to be on the same lines revolving around Joy Thakkolkaran and his various interesting encounters.

Nyla Usha played the female lead in the first part. Aju Varghese, Rachana Narayanankutty, TG Ravi, Innocent, Sreejith Ravi and Thesni Khan were also part of the cast. The same actors are expected to continue their roles in the sequel also, even though an official word is still awaited.

Vishnu Narayanan is cranking the camera and Pretham fame Anand Madhusoodanan is handling the music department. Sajan V is in charge of the edits. Punyalan Private Limited is also being produced jointly by Jayasurya and Ranjith Sankar under the banner of Dreams N Beyond.

Vellai Illa Pattadhari aka VIP, released in 2014 is one of the biggest hits in Dhanush’s career till date. Inspired by the massive success of the first part, Dhanush teamed up with his sister-in-law and filmmaker Soundarya Rajinikanth for its sequel. And finally, the second part titled VIP 2 is all set for a huge release.

VIP 2 will hit screens worldwide on August 11 and the news was confirmed by the makers only last day. Dhanush himself has has written the story and dialogues for VIP 2. One of the major talking points of the film is the comeback of Bollywood actress Kajol to Kollywood after a long gap of nearly two decades.

Kajol is playing the role of Vasundhara Parameshwar, a powerful industrialist who is pitted against Dhanush’s Raghuvaran. From the teaser and promos, VIP 2 looks like just another David vs Goliath story. But the brand VIP and Dhanush’s knack of cracking the audience’s pulse is expected to have a positive impact on the movie’s box office collections.

Amala Paul plays Dhanush’s pair and she is reprising her character, Shalini from the first part. Samuthirakani, Vivek, Cell Murugan and Hrishikesh are also part of the cast. Sean Rolden has replaced Anirudh to handle the music department. Malayali cinematographer turned filmmaker Sameer Thahir is the DOP and Sathyaraj Natarajan is in charge of editing. The movie is bankrolled by Kalaippuli S Thanu’s V Creations and will be distributed by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films.

She was roped in to play the female lead in Mohanlal starrer Velipadinte Pusthakam, directed by Lal Jose. Anna is playing an assistant professor’s role in the movie. According to reports, Sachin is a romantic-comedy entertainer that has cricket as the backdrop. Aju Varghese, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Renji Panicker and Maniyanpilla Raju are also part of the cast. Tamil Cinema has a had a very low profile 2017 till now. Leaving aside Baahubali, no other Tamil film has had a blockbuster run this year. Biggies like Bairavaa and Singam 3 failed miserably at the box office. Only very few movies like Maanagaram, Kuttram 23, Pa Pandi, Kavane etc have done good business at the box office.

But the real game is yet to begin as the second half of 2017 has just kick-started. Ajith, Vijay, Suriya, Dhansuh and Sivakarthikeyan have movies lined up for release. All these movies, especially Vivegam, Mersal and Thaana Serntha Koottam (TSK) are coming in with great hype and if they manage to get good reviews, then TN box office will flourish like never before.

First among them to release is Thala Ajith’s Vivegam. After waiting for over two years, Ajith fans will finally get to see their favourite star’s movie on big screen from August 24. This spy-thriller directed by Siruthai Siva marks the third time union of Ajith with the filmmaker after the success of Veeram and Vedhalam. Ajith has undergone a stunning make over for the movie by shedding down a lot of extra pounds. Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi is making his Tamil debut by playing a prominent role in the movie. Kajal Agarwal will be seen as the female lead while Kamal Haasan’s younger daughter Akshara Haasan is also playing a pivotal character. Sathya Jyothi Films have invested a whopping budget of over Rs 120 crores for this movie.

Nithya Menon, Kajal Agarwal and Samantha Ruth Prabhu are the three female leads. Baahubali writer KV Vijayendra Prasad and Ramana Girivasan have helmed the film’s screenwriting. Mersal has a blockbuster combo and the duo are expected to repeat the same success this time also.

Suriya has been through a rough patch over the last two years and he will be itching to get back to winning ways with his next outing Thaana Serntha Koottam. The movie directed by Vignesh Shivn is reportedly inspired from Akshay Kumar’s superhit movie Special 26. Tamil cinema’s current favourite Keerthy Suresh plays the female lead. The movie has a stellar supporting cast that includes Ramya Krishnan, Karthik, popular comedian Senthil, Saranya Ponvannan, KS Ravikumar and RJ Balaji among others. Young sensation Anirudh Ravichander is composing music for this movie. TSK is expected to hit screens sometime by the end of this year.

Apart from the above mentioned films, Dhanush’s VIP 2, Sivakarthikeyan’s Velaikaaran and Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam 2 (not yet confirmed) have the potential to reap rich dividends at the box office.

Hansika plays Sreya, who presumbaly is a singer. Telugu actor Srikanth’s Felix D Vincent is a grey shaded character and Raashi Khanna as Harshita Chopra plays a police officer.

Villain is a big budget movie produced by Rockline Venkatesh, his first venture in Malayalam. It is the first Indian movie to be shot completely and released in 8K resolution. Director duo Pushkar-Gayatri’s Vikram Vedha is the latest talk of K Town. The movie starring Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathy in the titukar roles was released worldwide on July 21. Vikram Vedha opened to excellent reviews from all the centres with critics lavishing praise on the lead cast for their fantastic perfomances.

Now according to latest reports, Baahubali star Rana Daggubati and Telugu superstar Venkatesh are in talks for the Telugu remake of this movie. The makers wanted to make this movie as a bilingual but later dropped the idea. Talks about the remake were doing the rounds even before the release. An official announcement regarding the Telugu remake is expected to be made in the next few days.

“Talks have been initiated with Rana Daggubati and Venkatesh for Telugu remake. They were the first choice even before the release of Vikram Vedha. However, nothing has been finalised yet and the process might take a few more months,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS.

Vikram Vedha is inspired from the popular folklore Vikram Betaal (Vikramdithyan and Vedhalam). The basic concept is borrowed from there and placed in an engaging cat and game between a cop and a gangster. Madhavan plays the tough and forthright cop Vikram and Vijay Sethupathy plays the role of Vedha, a gangster with grey shades. The movie also stars Shraddha Srinath, Kathir, Hairsh Perady and Varalakshmi Sarathkumar in prominent roles.

Upon release, Kollywood celebrities like Rajinikanth, Arya, Suriya, Karthi and director Karthik Subbaraj appreciated and congratulated the team for their success. Vikram Vedha is produced by S. Sashikanth under the banner of Y Not Studios .

After a lot of speculations, the makers of Thala Ajith’s much awaited spy-thriller Vivegam have finally announced the release date. The movie will hit screens worldwide on August 24. Vivegam marks the third time union of Ajith with director Siruthai Siva after the success of Veeram and Vedhalam.

Vivegam is Ajith’s first release in two years and the highly impressive teaser and songs have increased the expectations multifold. Ajith is playing the role of a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent in the movie. He has undergone a stunning make over for the movie by shedding down a lot of extra pounds.

Vivegam is being made on a whopping budget of Rs 120 crores. The team shot across the globe in countries like Romania, Albania, Bulgaria and Serbia. Many foreign artists and technicians are also associated with this project. This big budget movie is produced by Satya Jyothi Films.

Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi is making his Tamil debut by playing a prominent role in the movie. He will be seen a powerful parallel role. Kajal Agarwal is playing the female lead and Kamal Haasan’s younger daughter Akshara Haasan is also playing a pivotal character.

Vetri has handled the cinematography and young sensation Anriudh Ravichander has composed the music. The distribution rights for Vivegam in Kerala was acquired by Mulakupadam Films for a whopping Rs 4.25 crores, the biggest ever for an Ajith starrer in Kerala.
