Mohanlal’s award came in as a big surprise because most didn’t expect him to win an award. Jury chairman Priyadarshan, after announcing the winners talked to the media and revealed why Mohanlal was honoured with the award.

He said, “Unlike last time, there was a strong contention from regional movies this year. Last year, Bollywood movies had won most of the awards. Only Malayalam from the South Indian industry gave a tight competition to Bengali and Marathi movies. I feel extremely proud to be a Malayali.

Mohanlal was among the last three names for the best actor. The actor won the award taking into account his performance both in Telugu and Malayalam. There is only one special jury award in this category and Mohanlal has won this award for the second time after Kireedam (1989).

Vinayakan was also a strong contender in the supporting actor category. But Manoj Joshi won more votes for his performance in Dashkriya.

Reports about Kunjali Marikkar are false, confirms Shaji Nadesan

August Cinemas, one of the leading production houses in Mollywood, is currently on a high after the blockbuster success of their latest release The Great Father starring Mammootty in the lead role. The movie has already grossed more than 20 crores and is expected to end up as the biggest success in Mammootty’s three decade long career.

While The Great Father was setting the box office on fire, there were reports about August Cinemas once again collaborating with Mammootty for the much speculated project Kunjali Marikkar.

Recently, reports were doing the rounds about maverick filmmaker Amal Neerad directing Kunjali Marikkar with Mammootty in the lead. However, one of the producers in August Cinemas, Shaji Nadesan has confirmed to Onlookers Media that the reports were false and baseless.

But he was quick to add that talks are currently on for such a project. He didn’t divulge more details regarding the director or any other details. Apparently they are planning to announce it as a surprise to Mammootty, once The Great Father crosses the 100 crore mark. Kunjali Marikkar is a big budget movie, so chances of such a project materializing will depend on The Great Father’s overall business.

Meanwhile, The Great Father is entering it’s second week of theatrical run. The movie, directed by debutant Haneef Adeni is a revenge thriller featuring Mammootty in the lead role as David Ninan. Arya, Sneha, Baby Anikha, Mia George, Shaam and Malavika Mohanan are also part of the cast.

1971 Beyond Borders Review : An attempt to bring out Keerthichakra again !

1971 Beyond Borders Review : An attempt to bring out Keerthichakra again !

1971 Beyond Borders, Mohanlal’s fourth in the Major Mahadevan series after Keerthichakra, Kurukshetra and Kandahar has finally hit screens today. The movie has been released in a huge number of screens all over India, making it the biggest ever for a Malayalam movie. This Major Ravi directorial has Mohanlal in a dual role and is based on the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

The film starts off with Mammootty’s narration about the war and it’s background. Initial portions of the movie are set in Georgia where Mahadevan, who is now with the UN peacekeeping force, is seen rescuing Pakistani soldiers from terrorist attacks. On a parallel track, retired army man Brigadier Sahadevan is sharing stories about the 1971 war to his grandchildren.

Major Ravi has tried to convey the noble thought of war not being a solution to anything. Similar to his own Picket 43, here has again tried to showcase the Pakistani soldiers in good light.

1971 Beyond Borders is a well blended mashup of Major Ravi’s previous movies. The film is a recurrence of the already explored emotional side of soldiers and scapegoated colleagues. Add to that a whole lot of clichéd sequences. Eventhough it’s a movie based on true events, the director should have consciously stayed away from his usual narrative pattern and tried to bring in something novel in the screenplay.

On the performance side, Mohanlal is the solid backbone of the movie. His amazing energy levels while delivering the dialogues helps in maintaining the intensity of the movie. The actor has given a terrific performance while appearing in three different looks. Had it been any other actor, it would have certainly been a tiresome watch.

Telugu actor Allu Sirish was a big let down. He failed to justify his character and looked completely out of place. His acting in many scenes looked very amateurish and intolerable to an extent. Apart from Mohanlal, Asha Sarath and Bollywood actor Arunoday Singh, who played the Pakistani Major, all others were disappointing with their performances.

The movie’s major asset is Sujith Vaassudev’s cinematography. This is most probably the best work in his entire career. Leaving aside the colour tone in the climax portions, he has presented a true visual spectacle. The songs were good but Gopi Sunder’s background score lacked consistency and didn’t have much of an impact.

‌Overall, 1971 Beyond Borders took off safely from Kandahar and Kurukshetra but failed to land in Keerthichakra. Major Ravi’s best movie till date is Keerthichakra, so it seems like the director is trying to make the same movie everytime he wields the megaphone.

Aamir Khan refuses to release Dangal in Pakistan without national anthem

Aamir Khan refuses to release Dangal in Pakistan without national anthem

After a temporary ban, Pakistani theater owners and exhibitors have reopened the gates to Bollywood movies. Last year, they had refused to screen Indian movies after Pakistani artistes and technicians were banned by the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association (IMPPA). The association took the stand taking into account the cross border tension after the Uri attacks.

Recently, Pakistan lifted the ban on Indian films and began screening them in the country. The local exhibitors had requested to screen Aamir Khan’s Dangal, which is currently the highest grossing Indian movie.

Aamir Khan and the co-producers had given a green signal to release the movie in Pakistan but before a unreasonable demand came their way. The Pakistani censor board had asked to chop off two scenes, one with the Indian national flag and other with the national anthem.

An insider is quoted saying to Hindustan Times, “When the film went to the Pakistan censor board, they were fine with it except for two particular scenes towards the end – one in which the Indian flag is shown and another in which the Indian national anthem is played after Geeta Phogat (played by Fatima Sana Shaikh) wins the gold medal. The Pakistan censors wanted the scenes to be edited out before they gave Dangal the green signal.

However, Aamir Khan, who is also the producer of the film, felt that their demand is unacceptable and has decided not to release the movie in Pakistan.

Dangal, released on December 23, shattered several box office records and minted nearly Rs 385 crore at the Indian box office. Even though the decision to not release the movie in Pakistan might result in about Rs 10-12 crore in loss, Aamir is reportedly not ready to edit out the scenes.
