Rima Kallingal against Ranjith’s controversial statement

Following the attack on a popular actress in Kochi, Malayalam film industry has come under a lot of criticism for advocating misogyny and sexist remarks. Many have pointed out that there is an underlying agenda of misogyny in most of the Malayalam movies.

Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran took to his social media page to apologize for having mouthed misogynistic dialogues in the early phase of his career. He declared that he will not be acting in any such movies hereafter. But he was quick to add that being an actor he might have to act in grey shaded roles that demand such traits, but he will make sure those characters are not glorified.

This stand taken by Prithvi was widely appreciated. Even national medias reported about his post and requested other actors to follow his suit. Movies can have a great influence in the society, so it’s only appropriate to stop glorifying misogyny and sexism.

Ace filmmaker Ranjith has often been criticized for the misogynistic dialogues in his movies. Recently, a columnist Prem Chand pointed out about the sexist dialogues in some of Ranjith’s movies. The director has now responded through a column ‘Aakshepangalum Abhiprayangalum’ in Mathrubhumi. He has sarcastically written that he will change all such dialogues in his movies. He even mentioned about the misogynistic dialogues in the writer’s father-in-law, late screenwriter T Damodaran’s movies.

Actress Rima Kallingal has now written a post in her Facebook page against the controversial remarks by director Ranjith. The post reads,

When Prithvi took a stand against misogyny yesterday it was welcomed with resounding enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm that we didn’t see even when a woman stood up for herself in front of society and registers a case against her perpetrators, fully knowing that this hypocritical society will harass her for the rest of her life once the case dies down.

That even Vaikom Vijayalakshmi didn’t receive when she said no to a marriage when she was asked to compromise on her talent and career, inspite of all odds in life stacked against her.

But today I feel he deserves it. Considering he lives in a patriarchal society where men are brought up with a complete sense of entitlement and ownership over women around them, it indeed is commendable that he could look through all that haze.

“Even when mankind is conquering the pinnacle of knowledge, there is a unanswered question that thunders inside him , “who am I?” And seeking the answer for that is the true destiny of each human soul”, writes Director Ranjith in one of his most famous movies.

Knowing and understanding the feminine and the balance of universe is just one aspect of it.

We have miles to go before we sleep.

Ya allah Prem Chand and Deedi Damodaran. Much love and respect to you both.

The movie was both critically and commercially acclaimed. It had a theatrical run of over 100 days in the State. Overall business of the movie is estimated to be around 65 crores.

Before the Oppam wave could settle, Mohanlal’s highly anticipated biggie Pulimurugan hit the screens. The movie, released on October 7 during the Pooja holidays registered a record opening day collections for a Malayalam movie. It shattered every single pre- existing box office record in the Malayalam film industry. This action packed entertainer directed by Vysakh became the first ever Malayalam movie to enter the 100 crore club. It is still being screened at some thetares in Kerala. The overall business of the movie has gone well past Rs 150 crores.

This is indeed a phenomenal achievement considering the limitations of Malayalam film industry. While looking at the bigger picture, the huge success of Malayalam movies will inspire filmmakers to conceive projects on a larger scale with bigger budgets.

Veeram is not like Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha

Veeram is not like Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha

Director Jayaraj’s epic historic drama Veeram is getting great reports from all the centres. Critics and audience have appreciated the movie for the strong content and the excellent work in the technical department.

Veeram is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth based on the Northern ballads or Vadakkan pattukal of Malabar region. Vadakkan Pattukal is not an unfamiliar theme for Malayali audience. There have been several movies right from the black and white days that were based on the characters from Vadakkan Pattukal.

Most famous among them was Hariharan- MT Vasudevan Nair team’s Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha. The movie starring Mammootty in the lead is one of the all time classics of Malayalam cinema.

In Veeram, lead actor Kunal Kapoor is playing the role of celebrated anti-hero Chandu Chekavar, a character immortalised by Mammootty in Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha.

Right from the moment Veeram was announced, there have been comparisons with the classic and many were apprehensive about how they can recreate the magic. But in reality, Veeram is not like Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha. It is an entirely different movie told in a different scale.

Legend has it that, Aromal Chekavar, a well-known warrior, is killed after a sword fight in which his sword gets broken. Aromal manages to win the fight but then fingers are pointed at his cousin Chandu for replacing the metallic rivets with wooden ones. Chandu is said to have betrayed his cousin as he was jealous of Aromal’s popularity and abilities. Aromal after a altercation with Chandu gets killed by him. Aromal’s sister Unniyarcha, vows her sons will avenge her brother’s death. Chandu finally gets killed by Unniyarcha’s sons.

Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha was an alternative version of what is written in the history books. The story was told from Chandu’s perspective, suggesting that grave injustice was done to Chandu by wrongly accusing him of replacing the rivets. But in Veeram, Jayaraj has showcased the original version blending it with the world famous classic, Macbeth.

The backbone of Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha was it’s strong, novel plot but Veeram has it’s strength in the visual presentation. The story is taken forward visually with top notch technical values. Veeram along with the technical values is also an adaptation of Macbeth. So, it will be easily comprehensible and relatable to an international audience.
