No need to stand up for National Anthem if it is part of a film/documentary: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has modified its earlier order to compulsorily play national anthem in theatres. The apex court has now clarified that the audience need not stand when the National Anthem is played as a part of the film, newsreel or a documentary.

A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and R Banumathi made this statement after petitioners said that the Supreme court should clarify if people are expected to stand when the National Anthem is played in a film, newsreel or documentary.

It is clarified that when the National Anthem is played as part of the storyline of a film, newsreel or a documentary the audience are not obliged to stand up,” the bench said.

Aamir Khan’s recently released movie Dangal had one such scene where the National Anthem was played. Incident were reported about people attacking those who didn’t stand up during the scene.

The apex court had earlier ordered theatres across the nation to compulsorily play the National Anthem before screening of a movie and the audience must stand and show respect.

This decision was met with mixed response with many alleging that it is a sign of forced patriotsm and that theatres was not a place to show one’s nationality and patriotism. The decision resulted in several attacks across the country where even disabled individuals were attacked for not standing when the National Anthem was played.

Last year, during the 21st IFFK in Thiruvananthapuram, some delegates refused to stand up during the National Anthem, which lead to police entering the cinema halls and arresting them. This lead to widespread debates and criticism among all sections of the society.

It’s that season of the year when awards are being announced for last year’s best performances. When talking about last year’s best performances, one name that keeps lingering in our minds along with the likes of Mohanlal and Fahadh Faasil, must be Vinayakan’s.

For those who have seen Rajeev Ravi’s Kammatipadam, Ganga will still be a haunting character. Such was Vinayakan’s performance that one could not even imagine any other actor in that role. Ganga’s character was no cake walk. It was a very complex character that had many shades to it and it demanded someone who could get into the skin. To say the least, Vinayakan was up to the task.

Vinayakan has won a well deserved award in the special performance category in the recently announced Cera Vanitha Awards. On stage, he sung the Puzhu Pulikal song, which he composed and wrote the lyrics. He also thanked everyone who selected him for this honour.

After his terrific performance in Kammatipadam, Vinayakan will be next seen in Fahadh Faasil’s upcoming movie Role Models, directed by Rafi. He has also bagged a major role in Ordinary fame Sugeeth’s next movie that has Kunchacko Boban in the lead.

I am shutting down all my theatres: Liberty Basheer

Liberty Basheer, the former president of Kerala Film Exhibitors Federation, is planning to shut down all his theatres and turn into a shopping mall. Last year, the Exhibitors Federation presided by Liberty Basheer called for the cinema strike demanding a 50-50 profit share in the theatrical collections. The strike lasted for over 40 days resulting in huge commercial losses for the industry.

All the movies scheduled to release for Christmas were stalled by the exhibitors. Finally, the strike came to an with the intervention of actor Dileep. He formed a new union, Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK). The union has the backing of producers and the distributors association.

After the withdrawal of the strike, Malayalam movies started to hit screens. Mohanlal’s Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, Dulquer Salmaan’s Jomonte Suviseshangal, Jayasurya’s Fukri and Ezra starring Prithviraj were released widely in the state. However, the movies were not allotted to the theaters owned by Liberty Basheer.

Liberty Basheer’s Liberty complex in Thalassery houses five screens. Currently, only four of them is functioning. Little Paradise, Liberty Movie House and Mini Paradise are screening C- class semi porn movies like Pathimoonampakkam Paarkkam, Secret girls 009, Pollathaval. Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Sasikumar’s Balle Vellaiyathevaa are also being screened in the complex.

Liberty Basheer has decided to demolish the building and turn into a shopping complex.

He said, “I have met the party secretary four times this month. I have also met the Chief Minister. Though they have all promised to do necessary action, I think the new union is not ready to initiate anything. I have no other option than demolishing the theater complex in Thalassery. I’m planning to convert it into a shopping mall. There are are more than 50 employees who depend on these theaters for their daily sources of income. That the only reason for screening such movies.
