I can’t be like Prithviraj, says complete actor Mohanlal !

Last year on September 15th, Mohanlal made one of the biggest announcements ever in Malayalam cinema. It was about his movie Lucifer written by Murali Gopy and directed by one of the promising actors in South India, Prithviraj Sukumaran. The news came in as a huge surprise for the Malayali audience. After the announcement was made, many speculations are doing the rounds about the movie.Several fan made posters and designs pop up every now and then in social media pages.

Initially Lucifer was a brainchild of late director Rajesh Pillai and Murali Gopy. But the project could not materialize due to various reasons. Murali Gopy wanted Prithviraj to direct the movie but with a different script. Thus the project was confirmed with Mohanlal in the lead and also produced by his home production house Aashiravad Cinemas.

Recently, Mohanlal talked more about the movie and how he signed for the project. “We have been planning the film for sometime now. Right now only the title is fixed. I have worked with both their fathers. I have acted in Bharath Gopy’s directorial and Sukumaran’s production. I have also shared screen space with them in many movies. So, when I was offered this movie, I accepted to be part of it. Both Murali Gopy and Prithviraj are very sensible. From our conversations about movies, I have learnt that they are well-versed with cinema and the expectations of the industry. Also I liked the concept of Lucifer. Now, they will have to develop the script. We will have to sit for many discussions because when so many people are involved, we cannot just make an ordinary film. So, the content has to be good and that’s what the focus is right now. I will be meeting them soon to discuss when it will start rolling.”

When asked whether he has any plans for direction Mohanlal said, “direction is a different field altogether. Just like that I can direct but that will not do any justice to a movie. If you take a look at an actor like Prithviraj, right from the beginning of his career, he was interested in direction. He watches and studies movies for that purpose. For doing that I need to find time. I have to stop acting and write a script but all of that is a huge task. If I get a good story, a good cinematographer and an associate director, I can direct but that’s not doing justice to the art. I have shot several songs, scenes and stunts in many of my movies. When some directors of my movies were unable to be on the sets due to some reasons, they have asked me for help and I have directed. But to direct an entire movie and carry it on your shoulders is a different art altogether. I don’t think I can do it even in the future because it’s difficult. I always like to be free. After some time I will call it a day and go for travel. Not sure if that will happen or not”

Both Prithviraj and Mohanlal are having a handful of projects especially the former who has committed to almost 7-8 movies. So it is not yet clear when Lucifer will go on floors

We had earlier reported that popular script writer Sethu will be making his directorial debut this year through a project with Megastar Mammootty in the lead. In a recent interview, Sethu revealed more details about the movie.

He said, “I am very privileged to enter direction through a Mammootty starrer. Till now I was working mostly in multistarrers, this time I am working with on a single hero subject with a Megastar. Our movie will be a clean entertainer with lots of humour.

Interestingly, actor Unni Mukundan will be assisting Sethu in direction for this movie. Sethu said, “After finishing Mallu Singh, Unni Mukundan became very close to me. Theatre strike is a shame for all Malayalis : Innocent

The ongoing theatre strike has now entered the third week and it seems like it will last for few more days. This is a huge set back for the Malayalam film industry as many highly anticipated movies scheduled to release during the holiday season had to be postponed.

There is still no official regarding the release of Malayalam movies, while other language movies are running successfully in theatres in Kerala. The theatre owners’ decision to screen other language movies without screening Malayalam films was met with severe criticism from many corners. Recently, actor/ politician Innocent came out with staunch criticism against the Exhibitors Federation.

Actor and Parliament member Innocent has said that it is the every Malayali should feel ashamed at the theatre owners’ audacity to exhibit movies from other languages while blocking the screening of Malayalam films. He is also the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).

“If the same had happened in any other state, we can imagine what would happen to the theatre owners. As the president of AMMA, I’m hurt by the shame Malayalam language had to face. There are strong allegations that the theatre strike was triggered after information regarding the government’s plan to install ticket-vending machines in theatres were leaked. There are also other allegations about irregularities in taxes paid by the theatres to the local body organisations and in the Rs 3 collected from film viewers as welfare fund. If these allegations are true, being a responsible public representative, I will look into the matter seriously. Many demands of the local bodies are met with the cinema tax. So it is the necessity of every grama panchayath to install the ticket vending machines in theatres”, said Innocent.

The theatre strike started on Decemeber 16 after the theatre owners association, Exhibitiors Federation’s demand for 50% share of theatrical collections for new releases was turned down by the producers association and distributors citing huge losses as the reason.

The Great Father and Poomaram release postponed

The Great Father and Poomaram release postponed

The cinema strike that was called for after the dispute between Exhibitiors Federation and Producers Association over profit share issue has put the entire film industry in a spot of bother. Many movies scheduled to release for the festive Christmas season had to be postponed for further dates.

Already released movies like Pulimurugan and Kattappanayile Rithwik Roshan were also withdrawn from the theatres. Several rounds of talks were held between the two parties but they are yet to find an amicable solution for the issue.

Meanwhile, there are reports doing the rounds that movies like The Great Father and Poomaram has been pushed for further dates. Mammootty’s The Great Father was initially scheduled to release on January 27 while Poomaram was scheduled for February 4.

According to sources, the Christmas releases will now hit the screens in the January- February window. Subsequently, The Great Father will release only on March. Asif Ali’s Honey Bee 2 : Celebrations is also slated to release in March.

Mammootty- Ranjith team’s Puthan Panam and Mohanlal’s war movie, 1971 : Beyond Borders directed by Major Ravi are planned to release in April for the Vishu season.

Dr. Biju’s Kaadu Pookunna Neram starring Rima Kallingal and Indrajith will be the first Malayalam release in 2017. Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Bairavaa will hit the screens on January 12 followed by Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees on 25, Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil on 26 and Suriya’s Singam 3 on January 27.

Currently there are no Malayalam movies running in Kerala. Aamir Khan’s sports drama Dangal is hugely benefitted by the strike and the movie is running with packed audience in most theatres in the State.

Suresh Kumar responds to the allegations that he deliberately extended the cinema strike for smooth release of Keerthy Suresh’s movie

Suresh Kumar responds to the allegations that he deliberately extended the cinema strike for smooth release of Keerthy Suresh’s movie

The dispute between the Exhibitors Federation and the Producers association has already stalled the release of Malayalam movies and now production has also been stalled. The cinema strike was triggered after the theatre owners demanded a 50% share from the theatrical collections for all new releases. This demand was strongly opposed by the producers and distributors association.

Exhibitors Federation president, Liberty Basheer recently accused the head of the Producers’ association, G Suresh Kumar of deliberately extending the strike and stalling for a common solution so that no Malayalam movie releases this weekend. Liberty Basheer alleged that Suresh Kumar is doing this to help for a smooth release of Vijay’s Bairavaa, which features his daughter Keerthy Suresh as the female lead.

Producers association president Suresh Kumar has now responded against the allegations made by Library Basheer against him. He said, “I don’t take these allegations very seriously. They are trying to attack me personally but the people of Kerala have banished it. People who know me will never believe such baselss allegations, they very well know that I am not a person who stands for such things. The Malayali audience are aware about the number of theatres that a Vijay or a Suriya movie usually gets for release.”

Both the parties have still not found an amicable solution for their dispute. Even high level intervention from the Ministry could not help the
distributors and exhibitors to reach an agreement on the profit-sharing policy.

Nivin Pauly after the all time blockbuster Premam decided to don the khakis for the first time in his career and the result was Action Hero Biju (AHB). Nivin Pauly portrayed the role of SI Biju Paulose, a forthright and outspoken police officer. AHB was poles apart from the usual cop stories centering around a single murder investigation. The movie was truly a revelation that showed the other side of a police officer’s day to day life from having to deal with petty eve teasing cases to turning one on one with dreaded criminals. Though the movie received negative response initially, it gradually picked up at the box office thanks to the good word of mouth and the right promotions from the makers. best Malayalam movies of 2016, pulimurugan, aanandam, guppy, maheshinte prathikaram, best malayalam movies, best movie in mollywood, super hit malayalam movies 2016

When ace filmmaker Rajeev Ravi joined hands with young star Dulquer Salmaan for a movie, that too a gangster story, expectations were obviously on the higher side. But the movie was not a run of the mill gangster story. It was about friendship, the discrimination faced by the Dalit community and showed us the reality of how Kochi city was urbanised on the grounds of Kammattipadam. The layered narrative, top-notch detailing and the stunning performances of the lead actors are still the topic of discussion in many social media pages. Debutant Manikandan Achari and Vinayakan overshadowed lead actor Dulquer Salmaan with their mind blowing performances as Balan and Ganga. With zero squeezed in comedy track, glitzy songs or romance, Kammatipadam is regarded one of the finest regional movies to have released in Indian cinema in 2016.

Anuraga Karikkin Vellam (true to the name, a sweet tale of relationships)

best Malayalam movies of 2016, pulimurugan, aanandam, guppy, maheshinte prathikaram, best malayalam movies, best movie in mollywood, super hit malayalam movies 2016

Eventhough Asif Ali was part of many good movies, a solo hit kept eluding him for a long time. But then he finally found gold with Anuraga Karikkin Vellam. The movie directed by debutant Khalid Rahman was a clean family entertainer set in the urban milieu. Asha Sharath’s refined performance as the homemaker, Biju Menon as the fierce yet good at heart Raghu, Soubin Shahir’s instinctive one-liners were the plus points of the movie. But what towered above them was all was debutante Rajisha Vijayan’s adorable performance as Eli. With her debut movie itself, Rajisha made a lasting impact on the viewers mind for which she should be thankful to scribe Naveen Bhaskar who smartly sketched her character. The movie produced by August Cinemas was a big commercial success.

Kismath (Throws light on the caste politics in our society)

Kismath discussed about a love story between a Muslim boy and a Dalit girl. The makers didn’t shy away from discussing about the ugly caste politics prevailing in a so-called educated and forward society like Kerala’s. The movie was critically acclaimed with unanimous appreciation for the lead cast. Kismath also received great word of mouth from the audience helping in a fair run in the theatres. Kismath was selected for screening at the 21st IFFK.

best Malayalam movies of 2016, pulimurugan, aanandam, guppy, maheshinte prathikaram, best malayalam movies, best movie in mollywood, super hit malayalam movies 2016

Ozhivudivasathe Kali was based on a short story of the same name written by Unni R. The movie was also screened in many film festivals across the country. The movie found no buyers for a theatrical release before director Aashiq Abu took up the initiative and released the film in limited number of theatres. Directed by Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, the movie won the Kerala State Award for the best movie (2015). Interestingly, the entire second half of the movie was filmed in a single shot. Ozhivudivasathe Kali discussed issues like political corruption, caste prejudices and colour discrimination.

Lens (best thriller in recent times)

best Malayalam movies of 2016, pulimurugan, aanandam, guppy, maheshinte prathikaram, best malayalam movies, best movie in mollywood, super hit malayalam movies 2016

Lens directed by Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan was a thriller which discussed about the travails of social media. The director himself played the lead role in the movie. Made on a shoe string budget the Lal Jose came forward and distributed the film. Many filmmakers like Vineeth Sreenivasan and Vetrimaran had words of praise for the movie. The audience have tagged Lens as one of the best thrillers ever made in Mollywood.

Pulimurugan (historic is the word)

best Malayalam movies of 2016, pulimurugan, aanandam, guppy, maheshinte prathikaram, best malayalam movies, best movie in mollywood, super hit malayalam movies 2016

When Vyskah announced about a big budget movie with Mohanlal in the lead role playing a wild hunter, expectations had no limits. Released amidst unprecedented hype, the movie went on to become a sensational blockbuster. Pulimurugan became the first ever Malayalam movie to enter the 100 crore club. To say the least, Pulimurugan has rewritten the various perceptions about Malayalam movies. Inspired by gargantuan success of Pulimurugan, many Malayalam movies are now being on bigger canvas. If at all there was one man who could change the course of Malayalam movies, it had to be Mohanlal. At the age of 56, the actor performed action sequences that was far beyond imagination even for the younger crop of actors. He proved the naysayers wrong and singlehandedly brought glory to the industry, generally branded as a breeding ground for art house movies.

Aanandam (Revisit to the best days of one’s life – college years)

best Malayalam movies of 2016, pulimurugan, aanandam, guppy, maheshinte prathikaram, best malayalam movies, best movie in mollywood, super hit malayalam movies 2016

Debut director, seven new faces, debut composer, two film old cinematographer and a host of other youngsters in the technical department. These set of youngsters worked hand in hand to bring out a candy-coated tale of college days. True to the title, the movie was all about happiness and the freshness in the team reflected on the movie as well. Debutant Ganesh Raj’s ability to extract the maximum out of his unripe crew is indeed commendable. Good performances, heavenly songs, splendid cinematography and flawless editing ensured that the movie finds it’s name in the best of 2016 list. Due credits for Vineeth Sreenivasan also for supporting the youngsters by funding the movie.

Guppy (Rare gem that remained hidden)

best Malayalam movies of 2016, pulimurugan, aanandam, guppy, maheshinte prathikaram, best malayalam movies, best movie in mollywood, super hit malayalam movies 2016

Guppy was without any doubt the most unfortunate movie of 2016. It is the best possible example for what could happen if you don’t promote the movie rightly. An excellent piece of cinema that deserved to be on the winning side but lamentably could not. Debutant John Paul George’s skilled writing and direction brought on celluloid a beautiful piece of art sans any forced commercial gimmicks. Master Chethan and Tovino Thomas as the leads were outstanding especially the former who is expected to grab quite a few awards for for his performance. Girish Gangadharan’s visuals and Vishnu Vijay’s music set the tone right for the movie. Regrets after the DVD release did no good for the producer.

There were other successful movies like Oppam, Jacobinte Swargarajyam, Kali, Kattappanayile Rithwik Roshan and Pretham which once again reiterates the fact that Malayalam cinema is going from strength to strength.

If given a closer look, apart from Pulimurugan, all the other movies had youngsters in the lead and the 7 film old Vysakh is the most experienced director in the list. This is a real positive sign for the Malayalam film industry going into 2017.
