Cinema strike finally called off

According to official reports from trustworthy sources, the tussle be between Kerala Film Producers Association and Kerala Film Exhibitors Federation, which on December 16 has finally been resolved. Reportedly, the Exhibitors associations have withdrawn their demand for 50 percent revenue share of box-office collection. The decision was made followed by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s intervention.

The theatre owners association Exhibitors Federation led by president Liberty Basheer had demanded a 50-50 share from the theatrical collections of new releases. The producers and distributors opposed the demand claiming that they will have to face huge losses. Also, they questioned the condition of theatres in Kerala.

Many rounds of talks were held between the two parties, but they stood firmly in their stand. Minister in charge of Cinema affairs, AK Balan organised a meeting between the two associations in Wadakkanchery but the meeting went in vain. Following that the government put forward a suggestion for a judicial commision which the theatre opposed.

However, the exhibitors have now agreed to follow the same old 40-60 ratio revenue share (60 percent revenue for Producers) for the time being till the Government arrives at a decision.

The Christmas releases that had to be postponed following the cinema will now get a release date. Mohanlal’s Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, Dulquer Salmaan’s Jomonte Suvisheshangal, Prithviraj’s Ezra and Jayasurya’s Fukri are expected to hit the screens in the coming days. We will update about the release dates soon. Stay tuned

Will Dangal enter the 1000 crore club?

Aamir Khan is making history again with his latest release Dangal. Ever since it’s release on December 23, the movie has been doing great business both in the domestic market as well as the overseas market.

The movie has now collected a total of Rs 295.14 crores from the Indian market. Now it is just a matter of few days before Dangal takes over Salman Khan’s Sultan as the biggest hit of 2016. Sultan had a collection of Rs 570 crores gross worldwide.

Dangal is well within the reach of PK, which currently holds the record for the highest grossing Indian film ever with whopping collections of Rs 725 crores. Within the coming few weeks Dangal will certainly dethrone PK from the spot. However, the one question that everyone is asking is whether Dangal can enter the 1000 crore club. The movie can touch the four figure mark if the current trend continues. Also, there is no big release till January 25. Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil are releasing in the 25-26 window. So Dangal will have to continue its glorious run without any dip in the audience count in the coming weeks to enter the 1000 crore club.

The end credits of the movie reveal that Babita also won gold in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2014, Geeta became the first Indian female wrestler to qualify for the Olympics and Mahavir’s efforts inspired dozens of Indian women to participate in wrestling.

Director Gautham Menon has been in the news for sometime now. There were many speculations about his upcoming projects. The director himself disclosed about a multistarrer titled Ondraga with 4 big stars from the South Indian film industry. After that he revealed about his plans to direct a movie each with Vikram and Nivin Pauly. Vikram was said to play the lead in Dhruva Natchathiram, a project which was shelved after starting with Suriya. But now we hear that the director has got something exciting in store for the audience.

If reports coming in are to be believed, Nivin Pauly will play a dual role in the director’s next with Chiyaan Vikram playing the baddie. This is certainly an interesting casting because both the actors enjoy huge popularity in the Southern states. So the movie has got great potential to widen the market to a wider audience.

Gautham Menon has always been vocal about the idea of expanding the market by bringing in stars form other industries together. He has constantly stressed the need for multistarrers like those in Bollywood, that will enhance the business possibilities of movies.

The director has always had a penchant for having terrific villain characters in his movies- remember Victor from Yennai Arindhaal, Ilamaran from Vettaiyadu Vilayadu and Pandya from Kaakha Kaakha. So when Vikram comes on board to play a baddie, we can be assured that Gautham Menon has sketched a powerful role.

We both parted ways after realising that we both had varied perceptions and outlooks. For example, it was very difficult for me to convince Sachi about Mallu Singh and similarly I was not convinced with Run Baby Run. So we decided to work individually. After that both of us were caught up in our works and had no time to discuss things. But we are still very good friends, our family members often meet. We both read our scripts also. Recently, Sachi called and told me about a script that we both had written long back. I have agreed to it and we are planning to work together on the project by the end of this year.”

Theatre share should be brought down to 30% ,saysPriyadarshan

The ongoing tussle between between the theatre owners and producers and distributors have resulted in huge losses for the film industry. Several rounds talks were held between the two associations over the profit share issue, but there seem to be no solution as both parties stand firm on their views. Theatre owners association Exhibitors Federation headed by president Liberty Basheer have demanded for a 50-50 share on the theatrical collections of new releases.

Recently director Priyadarshan in a media interaction in Chennai, said that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan should intervene and find a solution for the issue. He said, “In my opinion, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan himself should intervene as these talks will only get prolonged. Even if they arrive on a compromise now, there are chances of the issue popping up again in the future.”

He also added that the shares should be brought down to 30% opposed to the existing 40% share. “Most theatres who have called for a strike now are in a dilapidated stage and they are not even ready to improve the facilities. Then how can they demand for a 50% share on the collections?”, asked Priyadarshan.

Many movies scheduled to release for the Christmas season had to be postponed due to the ongoing strike. Many people including AMMA president and MP Innocent have come out criticising the theatre owners’ decision to screen other language movies while stalling Mollywood films. It is now learnt that the Exhibitors Federation are now planning to stall all the releases and close down the theatres till their demands are met.

Producers Association coming up with new plans to tackle the cinema strike

To tackle the ongoing cinema strike, the producers association are planning to release movies in B class theatres, government theatres, malls and in those theatres who are willing to come out of the Exhibitors Federation.

Reportedly, the Exhibitiors Federation, which is an association for A class theatres are still not ready for any compromise to settle the issue. The producers and distributors association are planning to release the new movies in B Class theatres, malls and in theatres that are willing to move out of the Federation. They claim that this move to release the movies without the support of Federation can be a huge set back for them and can cause troubles within the theatre owners.

Exhibitors Federation president Liberty Basheer was earlier criticised by Siyad Koker, president of the distributors association for his authoritarian decisions that is worsening the issue. State Cultural Workers’ Welfare Fund Board chairperson actor-producer P Sreekumar has now alleged that there is gross irregularity in ticket rates in theatres owned by Liberty Basheer. P Sreekumar has demanded for a vigilance investigation against him. Many people have accused the Federation for screening other language movies while stalling the release of Malayalam movies. Now there are reports that there will be no more screenings in Kerala and that all the theatres will be closed until there is an amicable settlement for the issue.

Manju Warrier to play the lead in upcoming movie titled Mohanlal

Hero worshipping is a concept that has been used as the central theme for many movies in Indian cinema, the recent Shah Rukh Khan starer Fan being an example. Mollywood also has had it’s share of such movies like Rasikan, One Way Ticket and Sunny Wayne’s upcoming movie Pokkiri Simon, Oru Kaduththa Aaraadhakan. All these movies had male actors playing the lead roles, but an upcoming movie with a similar theme will be told from the point of view of a woman who is a blind fan of superstar Mohanlal.

We are talking about Manju Warrier’s upcoming movie directed by Sajid Yahiya. She will play a die hard fan of Mohanlal in this movie which is aptly titled as Mohanlal. The movie is scripted by journalist/writer Suneesh Varanad. Mohanlal entered the world of movies back in 1980 during a Christmas season through Fazil’s Manjil Virinja Pookal. Manju Warrier’s character in the movie is also born on the same day as the release of the movie. The movie will span a period from Mohanlal’s Manjil Virinja Pookal in 1980 to Drishyam in 2013.

Sajid Yahiya made his debut movie last year through Jayasurya’s action-comedy Inspector Dawood Ibrahim (IDI) which was a huge disappointment at the box office. Manju Warrier is currently shooting for C/O Saira Banu directed by debutant Antony Sony. The movie is also the comeback vehicle of veteran actress Amala Akkineni after a gap of 25 years.

Manju Warrier has also signed for acclaimed cinematographer/filmmaker Venu’s next titled as Gabrielum Malakhamarum.
