Siyad Koker against Liberty Basheer

The ongoing cinema strike between the theatre owners and the producers and distributors association have put the industry in a spot of bother. Many highly anticipated movies that were scheduled to release for this Christmas had to be postponed. Trade experts confirm that the strike have caused huge revenue losses for the industry on a whole.

The theatre owners association-Exhibitiors Federation headed by Liberty Basheer have demanded a 50% share from the theatrical collections. The producers and distributors have firmly opposed this demand fearing losses.

Many rounds of discussions were held to resolve the issue. Cinema minister AK Balan organised a compromise meeting between both the parties but could not find a solution. Now, distributors association president Siyad Koker has come out with strong allegations against Liberty Basheer. He has alleged that Liberty Basheer’s authoritarian decisions as the major reason for the issue not coming to a conclusion.

He also said that some of the theatre owners who opposed the government’s suggestion for a judicial commision are corrupted and that they are trying to ruin the industry. Most of the theatre owners in the association are against Liberty Basheer but they are holding back themselves to openly talk against him, said Siyad Koker.

It is still not clear when the issue will be resolved between both the parties and ensure a smooth release for all the postponed movies. Prithviraj’s Ezra, Mohanlal’s Munthirivallikalal Thalirkkumbol, Dulquer Salmaan’s Jomonte Suvisheshangal and Jayasurya’s Fukri are the Malayalam movies that got rescheduled to further dates.

High hopes for Sakhavu : Nivin Pauly

Nivin Pauly is currently on a break for Christmas to spend some quality time with his family. The actor has been having a packed schedule for the past few months juggling from one set to another.

He was acting in two movies simultaneously in Malayalam, debutant Althaf’s family entertainer Njandukalude Naatil Oridavela and National award winning director Siddhartha Siva’s Sakhavu.

The actor in a recent interview said that he is pinning high hopes on Sakhavu. Sakhavu is a political drama in which Nivin will play Krishna Kumar, a student political leader of the Left front.

According to the actor, Sakhavu is an intense film. It will be the kind of movie that will stay etched with the audience even after coming out of the cinema halls.

Siddhartha Siva’s previous few movies have been off-beat works that were critically appreciated. Nivin said, before listening to the script, he thought it would also fall in a similar category. But the perception was changed after the narration.

He said, the movie has a lot of potential and that the viewers will love the character. Sakhavu is not plainly a political drama. It will have equal amounts of humour, romance and machismo. Nivin has been taking a lot of time shooting for the film.

Shoot for Sakhavu commenced right after the release of Nivin’s Jacobinte Swargarajyam earlier this year. The team have been shooting the movie in schedules with one phase at a time.

In between that, shooting got stalled due to financial issues caused by the demonetisation move by the government. They are currently shooting in Peerumedu, Idukki. Another 30 day schedule of the movie is yet to be finished.

Sakhavu has a star studded cast. Jamna Pyari fame Gayathri Suresh, Aparna Gopinath and Kollywood actress Aishwarya Rajesh are playing the female leads in the movie. Aparna Gopinath is playing Neeti, a bold student activist from JNU Delhi. Sreenivasan, Maniyan Pillai Raju, Joju George and many other actors are also part of the movie.

Popular cinematographer from Kollywood, George C Williams is cranking the camera while Prashanth Pillai is handling the music department. The movie is produced by B Rakesh under the banner Universal Cinema.

He started the year with Abrid Shine’s Action Hero Biju, a different take on a police story. His next movie was his mentor’s Jacobinte Swargarajyam, a family entertainer. Success of both the movies have spiked his career graph to further heights.

Post the success of Premam, Nivin was approached with many scripts and the actor like always has been very choosy in selecting the scripts. He zeroed in on Gautham Ramachandran’s yet to be titled movie which is reportedly an official remake of Kannada superhit movie Ulidavru Kandanthe.

Santa Maria and Avargal are some of the titles doing the rounds about the movie, but Nivin maintains that they are yet to choose a title.

The movie will be set in a costal area in which Nivin will be seen as a stubborn, fearless rowdy like character. The actor is yet to finish dubbing for the movie.
