Hrithik Roshan to opt out of Vikram Vedha remake

It was reported that Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan would be starring in the Hindi remake of the 2017 Tamil superhit film ‘Vikram Vedha’. Though actors like Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan were initially rumoured to be part of the film, it was later confirmed that Hrithik and Saif will be playing the leads. However, it is now learnt that Hrithik is opting out of the project.

Apparently, the star has signed a web series — Disney+ Hotstar’s adaptation of ‘The Night Manager’ — and is more keen to work on that project. Hrithik’s schedule is so packed that he can allot dates to only one project and that is reportedly said to be the web series. Apart from that, he also also has ‘Fighter’ with Sidharth Anand and ‘Krissh 4’ coming up.

The Hindi remake of ‘Vikram Vedha’ was supposed to be helmed by Pushkar-Gayathri duo, who directed the original as well. The Tamil version had R Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi as the central characters. While Madhavan played a forthright cop’s role, Vijay Sethupathi essayed the part of a grey-shaded gangster. In the Hindi version, Hrithik was supposed to play the gangster role and Saif in the role of the cop. With the former backing out, it remains to be seen who the makers will be approaching next

Namita launches a new OTT platform; Names it Namita Theatre

South Indian actress Namita has launched a new streaming platform. Named as Namita Theatre, the platform is aimed at supporting small producers who can release their movies and premiere content that are made based on true incidents. The company has Namita as the brand partner and Ravi Varma as the managing director.

In a statement, Namita said that the film fraternity and people of Tamil Nadu has endowed her with fame and appreciations across the years and she always wanted to give something back. It was Ravi Varma, a graduate with Film Technology who later ventured into several corporate businesses, who suggested to her an OTT Platform that completely promotes and exhibits content that is made based on true incidents. The team is now looking forward to a perfect date to make the official announcement regarding the first league of contents that will be released on Namita Theatre.

Though Namita was more active in Tamil, she has worked in all the four South Indian industries. After a brief gap, she is now eyeing to make a comeback with a multilingual film titled ‘Bow Wow’. The film written and directed by RL Ravi and Mathew Scaria is inspired by a true survival story. Namitha plays a blogger in the film, which is a suspense thriller that also has a dog as a central character. Namita is making her debut a producer with this film. Her own production house is jointly funding it along with Subash S Nath of S Nath Films.

We had earlier reported about Suriya playing cameo role in ‘Kootathil Oruthan’ director TJ Gnanavel’s next. It is learnt that the star plays an advocate’s role in the film. Some location stills featuring Suriya in a lawyer’s attire have leaked online. In one of the stills, he can seen leading a protest along with other advocates. Interestingly, this is the first time Suriya is playing an advocate’s role in his career.

This yet-to-be titled film is a social drama which revolves around the struggles of a particular tribal community. Malayali actress Rajisha is said to be playing the female lead. Details regarding her character are not yet known. Manikandan, popular for his roles in ‘Kaala’, ‘Sillu Karuppatti’ and ‘Aelay’ is also essaying a major part in the film.

Suriya meanwhile has Pandiraj’s film in the halfway stage. The film’s shoot has been interrupted due to the second wave of pandemic. The makers were planning to shoot a massive action sequence involving hundreds of junior artists. But due to the current situation, it is not possible to shoot it as planned. They have decided to film it later after things return to normalcy. After its completion, Suriya is expected to team up with Vetrimaaran for ‘Vaadivasal’.

Dhanush’s Karnan to be out on Amazon Prime on May 14

After its blockbuster theatrical run, Dhanush starrer ‘Karnan’ is all set for OTT release. The film will be out on Amazon Prime on May 14. The Mari Selvaraj directorial has been rated by many as one of the best Indian films released this year. It is a rural-based drama that is partly inspired by real life incidents. The film is hard-hitting and thought-provoking as it speaks about oppression, custody violence and institutional discrimination. While Dhanush played the titular role, the film also stars Rajisha Vijayan, Lal, Lakshmipriya Chandramouli, Azhagar Perumal, Natarajan Subramanian, Gouri Kishan and Yogi Babu in important roles.

‘Karnan’ is also getting remade in Telugu. Bellamkonda Sai Sreenivas is set to reprise the lead role played by Dhanush in the original. The Telugu remake rights has been bought for a hefty price. An official announcement with details regarding the director and other cast and crew members is expected to be made very soon.

Filmmaker VA Shrikumar Menon has been arrested for financial fraud. Alappuzha South police arrested Menon from his residence in Palakkad last night. Sreevalsam Group had filed a complaint against him alleging that he had taken Rs 1 crore from them for film production. But later, there were no response from his side. Even after repeated enquiries, the director failed to respond, which forced the company to move legally. Though Menon had tried to get an advanced bail in this case, the court had dismissed it.

Shrikumar Menon became a popular name after he made his directorial debut with the Mohanlal starrer ‘Odiyan’. The film was released amidst unprecedented hype but it failed to please the majority. The director had to face a lot of backlash including cyber bullying. He had also announced the big screen adaptation of ‘Randamoozham’ with Mohanlal. But with the project getting delayed for over two years, MT Vasudevan Nair filed a complaint seeking the script back.

Recently, Menon had announced a pan-Indian film titled ‘Mission Konkan’. It is based on the heroic tales of Mappila Khalasis when our nation’s security was threatened and the film’s focus will be on the backdrop of Konkan Railways. Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award winner TD Ramakrishnan, best known for his bsst-selling novels ‘Francis Itty Cora’ and ‘Sugandhi Enna Andal Devanayaki, is scripting the film. The director had claimed that leading stars from film industries across the country will be part of the cast.

But within days after its release, the pandemic situation worsened in the state with a surge in the number of cases. The makers were eventually forced to withdraw the film from theatres. The film’s satellite rights have now been bagged by Asianet. Director Rahul Riji Nair shared by the big news with his followers in Facebook. He has written,

‘Kho Kho’ is a sports-based film that has Rajisha playing the role of a Kho Kho coach. It is probably the first time that a film based on Kho Kho is being made in mainstream Indian cinema. The film’s cast includes Venkitesh, Mamitha Baiju, Vettukili Prakash and Renjit Shekar among others. Some original Kho Kho players have also acted in the film.

On the work front, both Mammootty and Dulquer Salmaan have multiple projects lined up. The former was working on the Amal Neerad directorial ‘Bheeshma Parvam’ when the pandemic situation worsened and decided to stop shoot. He also has ‘CBI 5’, ‘New York’ and the second part of ‘Big B’ lined up.

Dulquer meanwhile was last seen shooting for a romantic period drama directed by Telugu filmmaker Hanu Raghavapudi. In Malayalam, he has finished shooting for ‘Salute’, a cop film directed by Rosshan Andrrews. The star also has a film each in Hindi and Tamil coming up. Balki of ‘Padman’ fame will be directing the Hindi film while the Tamil film titled ‘Hey Sinamika’ is helmed by popular dance choreographer Brinda.

Karthi plays a dual role in Sardar!

Karthi’s is teaming up with director PS Mithran for a new film titled ‘Sardar’. The makers had earlier released an intriguing motion poster that had the star sporting a salt and pepper look. It is learnt that he is playing a dual role in the film and the salt and pepper get-up is for one of his characters in it. This is the second time after ‘Siruthai’ that Karthi is playing a dual role.

‘Sardar’ has Malayali actress Rajisha Vijayan, who recently made her Tamil debut with ‘Karnan’, as one of the female leads. Raashi Khanna is the other lead. Bollywood actor Chunky Pandey will be seen as the antagonist. Simran, Murali Sharma, Ilavarasu, Munishkanth and many others are part of the cast.

On the technical front, GV Prakash is the music director and cinematography is by George C Williams. Editor Ruben, stunt choreographer Dilip Subbarayan and art director Kadhir are also part of the team. ‘Sardar’ is being produced by Lakshman Kumar under the banner of Prince Pictures.

‘Akhanda’ is an upcoming Telugu fantasy action drama starring Nandamuri Balakrishna as the lead. The film is written and directed by Boyapati Srinu and produced by Miryala Ravinder Reddy under the banner of Dwaraka Creations. Its teaser got released on April 13 on the special occasion of Ugadi and garnered great reception in social medias. Within a month of its release, it has crossed a whopping 50 million views in YouTube. The makers claim it to be the fastest from the Telugu film industry to achieve this feat.

‘Akhanda’ marks the reunion of Balayya and director Boyapati after thd blockbuster success of ‘Simha’ and ‘Legend’. Expectations are naturally high on their new film. Balayya is said to be playing a dual role in it. The teaser features him in a fierce avatar as an Aghori. His powerful dialogue and roaring screen presence are the highlights of the teaser. SS Thaman takes it to the next level with a mass background score.
