Cinematographer and filmmaker KV Anand passes away

Filmmaker and cinematographer KV Anand passed away early on Friday morning in Chennai following a cardiac arrest. The 54-year-old felt discomfort and drove himself to a private hospital in the city where he breathed his last. Following the shocking news, celebs from across the South Indian film industry are pouring in their condolences through social medias.

KV Anand started his career as a freelance photo journalist for leading newspapers and national magazines. Later, he joined PC Sreeram as his assistant. He turned an independent cinematographer with the Malayalam film ‘Thenmavin Kombath’, for which he won the National award. He debuted in Tamil with ‘Kadhal Desam’. Anand later teamed up with director Shankar for ‘Mudhalvan’, ‘Boys’ and ‘Sivaji’. He has also worked in Hindi films like ‘Josh’, ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’, ‘Nayak’ and ‘Khakee’.

Anand made his directorial debut in 2005 with ‘Kana Kandaen’. ‘Ko’, ‘Ayan’, ‘Maattrraan’, ‘Anegan’ and ‘Kavan’ are his other films. His last release was ‘Kaappaan’ starring Suriya and Malayalam superstar Mohanlal.

Operation Java OTT release date announced

As we had reported earlier, ‘Operation Java’ is gearing up for OTT release with Zee5 bagging the streaming rights. It has been announced that the film will be out on the platform on May 9. Directed by debutant Tharun Moorthy, ‘Operation Java’ is a film centred around cyber crimes. Despite the presence of no big star and the audience restriction in theatres due to the pandemic, it managed to emerge as a box office hit. The film had a successful theatrical run for around 75 days. Balu Varghese, Lukman, Vinayakan, Irshad, Shine Tom Chacko, Binu Pappu, Dhanya Ananya, Mamitha Baiju, Vineetha Koshy and Prashanth Alexander played the main roles in it.

Meanwhile, ‘Operation Java’ is getting remade in Hindi. Raj Zacharias of Celebs and Red Carpet has bagged the remake rights. More details regarding the remake version is expected to be out in the coming days. Offers are also pouring in from other languages. Since the film is basically about the world of cyber crimes, it should appeal to movie-goers irrespective of the language.

Kaduva and Paappan shoot stalled due to Covid second wave

The Covid-19 second wave is creating havoc all over the country with hundreds of lives every day. The nation is going through a very tough phase with many industries already shut. Cinema too is facing a period of crisis as shoot of many films are being cancelled. In Malayalam, the makers of ‘Kaduva’ and ‘Paappan’ have already stopped shoot. It is a tough call but they were forced to stall it due to the rapid surge in number of cases in Kerala.

‘Kaduva’ directed by Shaji Kailas has Prithviraj as the lead. It is a mass entertainer with a big star cast. Vivek Oberoi, Samyuktha Menon, Arjun Ashokan, Sai Kumar, Siddique, Janardhanan, Aju Varghese, Rahul Madhav, Vijayaraghavan, Seema, Kochu Preman and Priyanka will be seen in supporting roles. It is being produced by Prithviraj Productions along with Listin Stephen’s Magic Frames.

‘Paappan’ is Joshiy’s upcoming film starring Suresh Gopi as the main lead. Along with him, the film has his son Gokul Suresh Gopi, Sunny Wayne, Nyla Usha and Neeta Pillai essaying other major roles. Kaniha, Vijayaraghavan, Asha Sarath, Chandhunadh, Tini Tom and Shammy Thilakan are also part of the supporting cast. The film scripted by RJ Shaan is shaping up as a family-based entertainer with mystery and suspense elements in it.

Dulquer Salmaan’s film with Abhilash Joshiy to be made on a big canvas

We had earlier reported about veteran filmmaker Joshiy’s son Abhilash turning an independent director. Dulquer Salmaan will be playing the lead role in his directorial. In his recent interview, Dulquer revealed that the film will be an entertainer made on a big canvas. Abhilash is planning to make it like his father’s films, which are known for their commercial value. Abilash N Chandran, who had scripted Joshiy’s ‘Porinju Mariam Jose’, is penning Abhilash’s maiden film as well. Dulquer’s own production house Wayfarer Films is producing the film, which is yet to be titled. A formal announcement regarding the project is expected to be made soon.

Dulquer is currently in Kashmir shooting for a romantic period drama directed by Telugu filmmaker Hanu Raghavapudi. The star plays an army officer named Lieutenant Ram in the film and Bollywood actress Mrunal Thakur is paired with him.

In Malayalam, Dulquer had recently finished shooting for ‘Salute’, a cop film directed by Rosshan Andrrews. He also has a film each in Hindi and Tamil coming up. Balki of ‘Padman’ fame will be directing the Hindi film while the Tamil film titled ‘Hey Sinamika’ is helmed by popular dance choreographer Brinda.

Nivin Pauly and Peranbu director Ram to team up for a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual film?

Rumours about Nivin Pauly teaming up with Tamil filmmaker Ram is planning has been doing the rounds for sometime now. It is learnt that the two are set to join hands for a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual film. Suresh Kamatchi, who is producing the upcoming Simbu-starrer ‘Maanadu’, will be backing this project as well. An official announcement is expected to be made after finalizing the remaining cast and crew.

Ram is easily one of the most revered filmmakers in Kollywood at present. He has made critically acclaimed films like ‘Kattradhu Tamizh’, ‘Thanga Meengal’ and ‘Taramani’. His last film ‘Peranbu’ starring Malayalam superstar Mammootty was a widely appreciated one that went on to be screened in several international film festivals. It will be interesting to see him team up with an actor like Nivin Pauly.

Of late, the star has been showing a lot of interest in doing content oriented films like ‘Moothon’ and ‘Thuramukham’. He also has projects like ‘Kanakam Kamini Kalaham’, ‘Padavettu’, ‘Gangster of Mundanmala’, ‘Bismi Special’ and ‘Mahaveeryar’ coming up.

Rajinikanth to sport a younger look in Annaatthe

Superstar Rajinikanth’s next film is ‘Annaatthe’ directed by Siva. The film has been in the making for nearly a year now. Shoot is yet to be completed as the makers had to face various hurdles caused by the pandemic. Touted to a mass entertainer, the film has a huge star cast. A recent location still revealed that Rajinikanth will be sporting a young look in the film.

‘Annaatthe’ is expected to be on the lines of director Siva’s previous film ‘Viswasam’ with prominence to family emotions. The film has a star-studded cast, which includes four female leads — Keerthy Suresh, Meena, Khushbu and Nayanthara. Jagapathi Babu, Prakash Raj, Sathish, Vela Ramamoorthy, Soori, Bala and many others are part of the supporting cast.

‘Annatthe’ has music by Imman, cinematography by Vetri and edits handed by Ruben. Sun Pictures is producing the film, which has been confirmed as a grand Diwali release in November this year.

Thala 61: Ajith to team up with Valimai team once again

While Ajith fans are eagerly waiting for new updates from ‘Valimai’ team, the star is busy planning another project with the same team. As per a report in Pink Villa, Ajith is set to team up with director H Vinoth and producer Boney Kapoor for the third successive time. Apparently, the trio has already initiated works for their next, which has been tentatively titled as ‘Thala 61’.

Ajith is said to have loved the base story and Vinoth is currently working on its screenplay. It is again said to be an action packed film like ‘Valimai’. If things turn out as per plans, the team might start shooting for the new film by July. Ajith seems to be so impressed with Vinoth’s directorial skills that he has decided to collaborate with him even before the release of ‘Valimai’, which is only scheduled to hit screens in August.

Bhramam won’t disappoint even those who have watched Andhadhun: Unni Mukundan

As we already know, the acclaimed Hindi film ‘Andhadhun’ is getting remade in Malayalam as ‘Bhramam’. Ace cinematographer Ravi K Chandran is directing the film. Prithviraj, Unni Mukundan, Mamta Mohandas and Raashi Khanna play the lead roles. While Prithviraj reprises the role played by Ayushmann Khuranna, Unni essays the cop’s part done by Manav Vij. The latter seems to have pinned high hopes on the film.

In a recent interview with TOI, Unni assured that ‘Bhramam’ will be a novel experience for even those who have watched ‘Andhadhun’. He also added that the film won’t disappoint anyone. It will be interesting to see how Unni’s character has turned out in the Malayalam version.

Since the original was a huge commercial hit that also won a couple of National awards, the makers of ‘Bhramam’ will be hoping to repeat the success. Sarath Balan has adapted the script to suit the Malayali audience. Shankar, Jagadeesh, Sudheer Karamana, Surabhi Lakshmi, Ananya and many others are part of the film’s supporting cast.

Telugu star Allu Arjun tests Covid positive

Telugu star Allu Arjun has tested positive for Covid-19 and is currently quarantining at home. The actor took to his social media to inform that he has tested positive and is following all the safety protocols. He requested all his fans and well-wishers to not worry about him. He also urged everyone to get vaccinated when they get their chance.

Allu’s post reads,

Hello everyone, I have tested positive for Covid. I have isolated myself at home and have been following all the protocols. I request those who have come in contact with me to get tested. Stay home, stay safe and get vaccinated when you get the chance.

I request all my well-wishers and fans not to worry about me as I am doing fine.

Allu Arjun’s next release will be ‘Pushpa’, which is scheduled to hit screens on August 13. Directed by Sukumar, it is a mass-action entertainer planned as a pan-Indian release. Allu has gone through a major makeover for the film as he sports a rugged and local look. Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil plays the villain role in it Rashmika Mandanna, Prakash Raj, Jagapathi Babu and many others are part of the cast.

Suriya 40: Shoot of a massive action sequence postponed due to Covid second wave

Shoot for Suriya’s new film directed by Pandiraj had been progressing at a brisk pace. The team has now hit a roadblock due to the second wave of pandemic, which has caused a rapid surge in cases across the country. The makers were planning to shoot a massive action sequence involving hundreds of junior artists. But due to the current situation, it is not possible to shoot the sequence as planned. They have decided to film it later after things return to normalcy.

Tentatively titled as ‘Suriya 40’, it is a mass action entertainer with a huge star cast. The makers have so far released two location stills — one in which Suriya is seen holding a gun and the other has him walking majestically with a huge sword in hand. It is a clear indication that the film will be action-packed. AnbAriv duo is choreographing the stunts in the film.

‘Suriya 40’ has Priyanka Arul Mohan of ‘Gang Leader’ fame as the female lead. ‘Unnale Unnale’ fame Vinay essays the antagonist’s role. Sathyaraj, Saranya Ponvannan, Jayaprakash, Ilavarasan, Devadarshini, Subbu Panchu Arunachalam and ‘Vada Chennai’ fame Saran will be seen in supporting roles.

On the technical front, the film has Rathnavelu as the cinematographer and the recent National-award winner D Imman as the composer. Sun Pictures is producing the film.
