Halal Love Story to release directly in Amazon Prime

After ‘Sufiyum Sujathayum’ and ‘C U Soon’, another Malayalam film is gearing up for direct OTT release. ‘Sudani From Nigeria’ fame Zakariya’s sophomore film ‘Halal Love Story’ is all set to release on Amazon Prime. We hear that the film will be having its premier on October 15. The formal announcement regarding the release date is expected to be made by the makers soon.

‘Halal Love Story’ has Indrajith Sukumaran, Joju George, Grace Antony, Soubin Shahir and Sharafudheen in the lead roles. Parvathy is also part of the film in a cameo role. This is probably the first time she is playing a guest appearance in a Malayalam film.

Zakariya is directing and co-scripting ‘Halal Love Story’ along with Muhsin Parari. It is said to be a feel-good comedy flick with some subtle political commentary in it. The technical crew comprises of cinematographer Ajay Menon, editor Saiju Sreedharan and costume designer Mashar Hamsa. Bijibal, Shahabaz Aman and Rex Vijayan are jointly handling the music department.

Aashiq Abu is producing the film along with Jesna Ashim and Harshad Ali.

Stellar star cast in Amazon Prime’s Putham Pudhu Kaalai

Five prominent Tamil filmmakers are joining hands for an Amazon Prime original film titled ‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’. It is an anthology of 5 short films featuring stories of love, new beginnings, second chances, and a glimmer of hope. All the stories are set and shot in the times of the COVID-19 lockdown. Sudha Kongara, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Rajiv Menon, Karthik Subbaraj and Suhasini Mani Ratnam are directing the 5 films.

Sudha Kongara’s film titled ‘Ilamai Idho Idho’ has Kalidas Jayaram, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Urvashi and Jayaram in the lead roles. Niketh Bommireddy is the DOP and GV Prakash has composed the music. Interestingly, they both are also part of Sudha’s ambitious film ‘Soorarai Pottru’, also gearing for release in Amazon Prime.

Karthik Subbaraj’s segment in ‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’ is titled as ‘Miracle’. It has Bobby Simha and ‘Petta’ fame Muthu Kumar in the lead roles. Bobby Simha has been part of Karthik’s all feature films except ‘Mercury’. The actor had even won a National award for his performance in Karthik’s gangster-comedy ‘Jigarthanda’.

Gautham Menon’s segment has an interesting title — ‘Avarum Naanum/Avalum Naanum. MS Baskar and Ritu Varma play the lead roles in it. The National award winning actress-turned-filmmaker Suhasini Mani Ratnam is directing a segment titled ‘Coffee, Anyone’. Suhasaini herself is playing one of the leads alongside her cousins Anu Haasan and Shruti Haasan.

The last segment titled ‘Reunion’ stars Andrea Jeremiah, ‘OK Kanmani’ fame Leela Samson and Sikkhil Gurucharan. It is helmed by Rajiv Menon.

‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’ is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on October 16.

Kaanekaane set to start rolling next month

Tovino Thomas, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Shruti Ramachandran and Suraj Venjaramoodu will be seen playing the lead roles in a new film titled ‘Kaanekaane’. It marks the reunion of the ‘Uyare’ combo — director Manu Ashokan and script writer duo Bobby-Sanjay. The makers are planning to start shooting for the film by October itself. Chottanikkara in Ernakulam is the main location.

Unlike ‘Uyare’, which was an inspiring story based on true events, ‘Kaanekaane’ is a fictional tale of real human relationships and emotions. As per the makers, the film offers great scope for performance and the four lead actors — Tovino Thomas, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Shruti Ramachandran and Suraj Venjaramoodu — will be seen in equally important roles. Prem Prakash and Rony David Raj are also essaying crucial roles.

On the technical front, Alby Antony is the cinematographer and Abhilash Chandran, the editor. Ranjin Raj of ‘Joseph’ fame will be composing the music. The film is produced under the banner of DreamKatcher.

Meena set to join Drishyam 2 team; Shares about her first travel experience after 7 months

As ‘Drishyam 2’ shoot continues to progress, lead actress Meena has landed in Kerala to join the team. The actress will be reprising the role of Rani from the first part, ‘Drishyam’, which was released in 2013. Meena took to her Instagram handle to share about her first travel experience in 7 months. Due to the pandemic threat, she had covered herself fully with a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kit and found the journey very uncomfortable. Meena also added that her respect for health workers who wear PPE outfit all day have grown multifold.

Meena’s post reads,

Though I look like traveling to space, I feel like going to war. Traveling after 7 months…. Surprised to see the airport so calm and quiet deserted. Even more surprised to see not many were dressed like me ? I must say it was the most uncomfortable outfit. Was so hot and stuffy,makes you sweat even when the weather is cool and air con on. Can’t even wipe your face, especially with the gloves ? Hats off to all the health workers who live in this PPE outfit day in and day out. In spite of so much discomfort they still understand our pain and take care of us all the time. My respect for them has magnified ?? Thank you for your selfless effort to humankind.

‘Drishyam 2’ shoot is currently underway at Aluva. Mohanlal has already started shooting for his portions. The team is following the safety protocols advised by the government. To ensure none gets infected, all the cast and crew members will be staying together throughout the shoot.

Jayaram, Kalidas, Urvashi and Kalyani Priyadarshan are coming together for the first time. They will be seen playing the lead roles in director Sudha Kongara’s upcoming short film ‘Ilamai Idho Idho’, which is part of Amazon Prime’s 5-part anthology film ‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’. Gautham Vasudev Menon, Rajiv Menon, Karthik Subbaraj and Suhasini Mani Ratnam are directing the other four films.

Though the father-son duo of Jayaram and Kalidas have acted togther in Malayalam films like ‘Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal’ and ‘Ente Veedu Appuntem’, this is the first time Kalidas is sharing screen space with his father after becoming a grown up actor. Urvashi and Kalyani had also recently worked together in ‘Varane Avashyamund’.

‘Ilamai Idho Idho’ has Niketh Bommireddy as the DOP and GV Prakash as the composer. They both were part of Sudha’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’ as well.

‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’ is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on October 16.

As we already know, Mohanlal starrer ‘Lucifer’ is getting a second part titled as ‘Empuraan’. Writer Murali Gopy and director Prithviraj are currently working on its pre-production. Last day, Murali Gopy conveyed the full design brief of the film to Prithviraj. The latter, who is thrilled to bits, posted a selfie of the two in his social media handle and wrote,

Probably the day I first “saw” #EMPURAAN when your writer’s design starts forming an edited, colour corrected shape in your mind! I cannot wait to get this started… as much as a fan.. as a filmmaker!

‘Empuraan’ will have Mohanlal returning as Stephen Nedumbally aka Khureshi Ab’raam. Prithviraj will also be reprising his role of Zayed Masood. Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier and Indrajith Sukumaran are expected to be part of this film as well.

‘Empuraan’, as confirmed by the makers, will be a much bigger film than ‘Lucifer’ in terms of scale. Antony Perumbavoor is producing the film under the banner of Aashiravd Cinemas. There is still a lack of clarity regarding when shoot will begin as the trio of Mohanlal, Prithviraj and Murali Gopy have multiple other commitments lined up.

5 Tamil filmmakers come together for Amazon Prime original film Putham Pudhu Kaalai

Multiple anthologies are currently being made in Tamil for leading OTT platforms. Amazon Prime is now coming out with a 5-part film that has been titled as ‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’. Gautham Vasudev Menon, Rajiv Menon, Karthik Subbaraj, Suhasini Mani Ratnam and Sudha Kongara are directing the five films. It is scheduled to have its world premier on October 16.

As per reports, ‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’ is an anthology of 5 short films featuring the first of its kind stories of love, new beginnings, second chances, and a glimmer of hope — all set and filmed in the times of the COVID-19 lockdown.

We hear that Kalidas Jayaram and Kalyani Priyadarshan are starring in Sudha Kongara’s segment. Niketh Bommireddy, who shot Sudha’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’, is handling the camera in this film as well. Madhavan, Bobby Simha, Andrea Jeremiah, Leela Samson and GV Prakash are also said to be part of the cast.

Santosh Sivan to remake Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Maanagaram in Hindi

Ace cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Santosh Sivan is planning to remake the hit Tamil film ‘Maanagaram’ in Hindi. Vikrant Massey has been signed to play one of the lead roles. Malayali producer Shibu Thameens of Thameens Films is backing the film. An official announcement with full details comprising the cast and crew members is expected to be made soon by the makers.

‘Maanagaram’ starring Sundeep Kishan, Regina Cassanadra and Sri in the lead roles is a brilliantly made hyperlink thriller. The film that got released in 2017 had emerged as a sleeper hit at the box office. It marked the directorial debut of Lokesh Kanagaraj, who later went on to make ‘Kaithi’ and the Vijay starrer ‘Master’.

While ‘Maanagaram’ had Chennai city as a character in itself, the Hindi version will be set entirely in Mumbai. Vikrant Massey will be reprising the angry young man’s role played by Sundeep Kishan in the original.

Andrea Jeremiah to star in Mysskin’s Pisasu 2

Recently on his birthday, director Mysskin had announced that he would be making a sequel for his hit horror film ‘Pisasu’. The film however won’t be a continuation of the same story. Andrea Jeremiah will be playing the lead role in ‘Pisasu 2’. Ilaiyaraja’s son Karthik Raja will be composing music for this film.

‘Pisasu’ that got released in 2014 was a brilliantly made horror film that stayed clear of all the stereotypes that are usually associated with the genre. Naga and Malayali actress Prayaga Martin had played the lead roles in it. The film was a box office success it was also remade in multiple languages.

Expectations will naturally be high on ‘Pisasu 2’. Along with Andrea, the film also has Rajkumar Pitchumani as the other lead. He had previously played the villain role in Mysskin’s film ‘Psycho’. Andrea has also worked with the director in ‘Thupparivalan’.

The makers are planning to start ‘Pisasu 2’ in November. Mysskin has also committed for projects with Arun Vijay and Simbu.

Prithviraj and Jayan Nambiar team up for Vilayath Buddha

Prithviraj Sukumaran and his former associate Jayan Nambiar are teaming up for a film based on GR Indugopan’s novel ‘Vilayath Buddha’. The film was supposed to be directed by Sachy, who unfortunately passed away earlier this year. The late filmmaker was working on its script before his untimely demise. Indugopan and Rajesh are now penning the script and they are planning to start shooting only after the pandemic threat is over.

The story of ‘Vilayath Buddha’ revolves around Bhaskaran master, who grows a sandalwood tree in his yard for a personal reason, and his student Double Mohanan, a smuggler, who challenges his teacher that he will cut down the tree. While Prithviraj will be seen playing Double Mohanan’s role, the makers are yet to give reveal the name of the actor who will be essaying Bhaskaran Master’s part.

Prithviraj and Jayan Nambiar had initially planned to collaborate for another film, which was to be scripted by Sachy. However, after his passing away, that project got dropped. It was then Prithviraj who insisted Jayan Nambiar to take up ‘Vilayath Buddha’.

Prithviraj and Jayan Nambiar are also working on another project. It is a mythological film which the latter is co-directing along with debutant Gokulraj Bhaskar. Prithwiraj is starring in the film, which is touted to India’s first movie to be shot completely in virtual production.
