This year’s Vishu was not the usual cheerful self due to the outbreak of the deadly Corona virus. Malayalis across the world were forced to celebrate the festival within their home spaces. Actress Samvritha Sunil got to celebrate her Vishu with her family in Charlotte, North California. Even during these tough times, it was a special occasion because it was the first Vishu of Samvritha’s second child. The actress took to her social media handle to share an adorable photo with her two kids, Agastya and Rudra.

Along with the photo, Samvritha has also written,

In quarantine since more than a month now, but I don’t have time for anything because my hands are full!

Samvritha got married to Akhil Jayarajan, an US based engineer in 2012. After marriage, she took a break from films for about six years. She gave birth to their first child, Agastya, in 2015 and second kid, Rudra, this February. Last year, Samvritha made comeback to films with ‘Sathyam Paranja Viswasikkuvo’.

Malayali actress Nikhila Vimal turns volunteer at Kannur Corona call centre!

During these tough times triggered by the Corona virus outbreak, celebrities are doing their bit to help the government in the fight against the pandemic. Malayali actress Nikhila Vimal has turned a volunteer to serve the public by working at the Kannur district panchayat’s call centre. She worked at the call centre which is being operated to coordinate the supply of essential commodities to houses amidst the lockdown.

Nikhila Vimal, who is a native of Taliparamba, expressed her willingness to work as a volunteer after she came across the awareness campaign of the government. At the call centre, Nikhila interacted with the callers who dialed the call centre seeking essential commodities. She notes down the list of essential things needed by the citizens and report to the authorities. Volunteers will deliver these items at the doorsteps of those in need.

Along with Nikhila Vimal, popular footballer CK Vineeth, district panchayat president Ajith Mattool, state sports council vice president OK Vineesh and many other volunteers worked at the call centre.

As announced earlier, Suriya and director Vetrimaaran are teaming up for the first time for a film titled ‘Vaadivaasal’. The film is based on CS Chellappa’s popular novel of the same name. Kalaippuli S Thanu of V Creations, who produced the director’s last blockbuster ‘Asuran’, is backing this film as well.

GV Prakash, a frequent collaborator with Vetrimaaran, has been signed as the music director. He has already started composing for the film. It is his 75th film as a music director and GV has assured that it will be a film special with unique sound. Last day, he tweeted,

‘Vaadivaasal’, the novel, is actually based on Jallikkattu, a famous bull taming sport practiced from the Tamil classical period. Vaadivasal is the narrow gate through which the Jallikattu bulls are let out for young men to subdue during the Pongal celebrations. Reports suggest that it is a tale of revenge about how an youngster defeats a bull that killed his father.
Shoot for the film is expected to begin by the end of this year.

As reported earlier, the trailer of upcoming Tamil film ‘Andhaghaaram’ got released online last day. The film stars ‘Katihi’ fame Arjun Das, Vinoth Kishan, Pooja Ramachandran, Kumar Natarajan and Misha Ghoshal in major roles. Directed by V Vignarajan, the film is a supernatural suspense thriller. Superhit filmmaker Atlee is next presenting the film under his banner A For Apple.

‘Andhaghaaram’ was first announced in 2014 and has been in the making for over a year. The plot goes like this, “A blind conjurer’s struggle for survival, a washed-up cricketer’s fight for deliverance and a desolate psychiatrist’s quest for reclamation lead them to a labyrinth of obscurity while their lives are intertwined i a web of deceit, dismay and darkness.”

Director Atlee recently got to watch the film recently and was very impressed by it. Hence he decided to release it through his banner. It is produced by Sudhan Sundaram and Jayaram from Passion Studios Production in association with K Poorna Chandra of O2 Pictures and Priya Atlee.

Mani Ratnam reveals that he’s a huge fan of Lijo Jose Pellissery!

Mani Ratnam is one of those celebrities who prefers staying away from the limelight. He does not own an active social media account but guess the lockdown has been so bad that even Mani Ratnam came online to interact with fans. Last day, Mani Ratnam and his wife Suhasini interacted with fans in Instagram through the latter’s page. The director took questions from his followers and answered them all in his typical sarcastic tone.

Along with many other followers, Malayali filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery was also watching the celebrity couple’s live video. When Suhasini noticed that Lijo is watching the video, she revealed how they both are big fans of his works. Though Suhasini has watched only one of Lijo’s films, Mani Ratnam seems to have followed all his works. They both particularly mentioned about ‘Ee Maa Yau’, ‘Jallikkattu’ and ‘Angamaly Diaries’. Mani Ratnam even added that Lijo is one of the finest filmmakers we have today and urged him to continue the good work.

A compliment from a legendary filmmaker like Mani Ratnam is indeed huge and Lijo Jose Pellissery could not have asked for more. Though Lijo has always been doing quality, experimental films, his popularity grew outside Kerala after the success of his last three films — ‘Angamaly Diaries’, ‘Ee Maa Yau’ and ‘Jallikkattu’. The director’s next film ‘Churuli’ is getting ready. Shot in just 19 days, the film has Joju George, Chemban Vinod Jose and Vinay Forrt in the lead roles.

For the last few years, Suriya has been on a rough patch with most of his films failing to tapping the immense potential in him as a performer. His next release ‘Soorarai Pottru’ looks to be that film where we will get to see Suriya back in all his glory. The film directed by Sudha Kongara of ‘Irudhi Suttru’ fame is loosely based on the life of GR Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan. Suriya plays a character named Nedumaaran Rajangam Maara, a common man hailing from Madurai who dreams of owning an aircraft business.

‘Soorarai Pottru’ follows the life of Maara from his teenage days to him becoming a businessman. Suriya will be appearing in various looks, which includes a 19-year-old getup. Last day, a making video was released which shows how Suriya went through the fascinating transformation to a teenager. The 44-year-old is seen sprinting and exercising on sets with available resources. Apparently, the star had to reduce lot of weight and do rigorous workouts to look convincing as a youngster.

‘Soorarai Pottru’ is a very ambitious project with a massive budget involved in it. Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment is producing the film jointly with Suriya’s own production house, 2D Entertainment. Malayali actress Aparna Balamurali plays the female lead. The cast also includes Paresh Rawal, Urvashi, Karunas, Vivek Prasanna, Kaali Venkat and Mohan Babu in important roles.

As reported by us earlier, Kannan Thamarakkulam is directing a film based on the Maradu flats demolition, an incident that grabbed state wide attention. Dinnesh Pallath has scripted the film which has been titled as ‘Maradu 357’. Today, on the special occasion of Vishu, the film’s first look poster has been released online. Anoop Menon, Sheelu Abraham and Dharmajan Bolgatty feature in the poster.

Anoop Menon, who sports a salt and pepper look, is seen with a gun in the poster. Dharmajan who is mostly known for his comedy roles is playing a performance oriented character in this film. He will be seen as a flat security who has his one hand amputated. Manoj K Jayan, Kailas and many others are part of the supporting cast.

‘Maradu 357’ has cinematography by Ravichandran and editing done by VT Sreejith. The band 4 Musics has composed the songs while background score is handled by Saanand George Grace. Actor Unni Mukundan has written a 3-minute long Hindi song for the film.

If things were normal, ‘Bilal’, the much hyped sequel to ‘Big B’ would have gone on floors by now. But due to the lockdown, the makers had to postpone their plans. Despite all the delay, the excitement about the film only keeps growing. Not just the fans, even celebs are eagerly looking forward to it. Recently, during a live interaction session with his followers in Instagram, Dulquer was asked by one of them about his expectations on ‘Bilal’. The star replied that he just can’t wait for the film.

Interestingly, today (April 13) marks the 13th anniversary of Big B’s release. Though it was a stylishly shot gangster flick, the film could not fare well during the time of its theatrical release. But over the years, it went on to attain a cult status among the Malayali audience. Mammootty’s Bilal John Kurishingal still remains one of his most celebrated characters.

Amal Neerad, who made his debut with ‘Big B’, is helming the second part as well. Mammootty, Bala, Manoj K Jayan and Mamta Mohandas will be reprising their roles. Unni R is scripting the film and it will have music by Gopi Sunder. Shoot is expected to begin soon after the Corona crisis is over.

Santosh Sivan is making his comeback to Malayalam after a brief gap by directing this film. Shoot was kick-started couple of years back but there has been no updates till date regarding its release. Recently, Kalidas shared a new still from the film in his Instagram handle. The photo features him along with Manju, Basil Joseph and Aju Varghese.

‘Jack and Jill’ is not a regular film but a very attempt in Malayalam. The makers have so far been tight-lipped about the genre but there are speculations about it being a quikry sci-fi flick. Manju has performed action scenes in the film for which she even underwent training in mixed martial arts.

The cast also includes Soubin Shahir, Nedumudi Venu, Ramesh Pisharody and Suraj Venjaramoodu. A Dubai based company named Lensman Studios is producing the movie.

It’s a baby boy for director Midhun Manuel Thomas

Malayali filmmaker Midhun Manuel Thomas is currently on a high, both in the personal and professional front. The 36-year-old has been blessed with a baby boy today. The director took to his official social media handle to share a cute photo of his new born. Midhun, who hails from Wayanad, got married to Kottayam native Fibi Kochupurackal in 2018.

Midhun’s last released film ‘Anjaam Pathiraa’ was a huge success, both critically and commercially. It is so far the biggest blockbuster in Malayalam cinema this year. The director who was till then known for his comedy and feel-good films, attempted to make a thriller for the first time and it struck gold. Remake offers are pouring in for the film from various languages but the makers are yet to let out an official word.

Midhun meanwhile has committed for a couple of new projects, including the third part to his hit franchise ‘Aadu’. A mass action thriller is also in the planning.
