Confirmed: Kamal Haasan to make his digital debut

Kamal Haasan is considered as a pioneer in various aspects in the Indian film industry. The Ulaganayagan is known for his penchant for trying innovative concepts. So it was only a matter of time before he entered the digital space, which has triggered a revolution in the field of entertainment. Kamal is set to make his digital debut by joining hands with Deepak Dhar of Banijay Asia and R Mahendran’s Turmeric Media. More details on the project are still awaited.

Just a while back, Kamal announced the same by tweeting,

Kamal is currently in dabbling in cinema and politics. He is leading the party Makkal Needhi Mayyam, which is expected to make a big mark in the upcoming Tamil Nadu elections. On the acting front, Kamal has ‘Indian 2’ in the making.

Hridayam: Shoot started for Pranav Mohanlal’s next with Vineeth Sreenivasan

The hugely hyped Vineeth Sreenivasan directorial ‘Hridayam’ has gone on floors. The film stars Pranav Mohanlal, Kalyani Priyadarshan and Darshana Rajendran in the lead roles. It marks the return of Merryland Cinemas to production after nearly three decades. Visakh Subramaniam, who was one of the producers of ‘Love Action Drama’ heads the banner now. Noble Thomas is the co-producer.

‘Hridayam’ is expected to be a proper feel-good entertainer on the lines of Vineeth’s previous films. Though shoot has begun, the makers are yet to reveal anything regarding the genre or other plot details. The film will have music composed by Hesham Abdul Wahab. This is the first time Vineeth Sreenivasan is teaming up with someone other than his close friend Shaan Rahman.

Recently, Vineeth Sreenivasan was in Istanbul to record live instruments for the film. Actor Prithviraj had also recently recorded a song in the film.

Ayyappanum Koshiyum censored with clean U; All set for release this Friday

Prithviraj-Biju Menon starrer ‘Ayyppanum Koshiyum’ has been censored by the CBFC with a clean U certificate. The film is now set to hit screens on February 7. Directed by Sachi, then film has high expectations courtesy the highly impressive trailer. Even the promo song released recently grabbed attention in social medias.

The story of ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ happens in the Attapadi region. It is centred around a conflict between a policeman and a retired solider over a legal issue. Biju Menon plays Ayappan Nair, a middle-aged cop and Prithviraj essays the part of Koshy Kurian, a havildar who is retired from army after 16 years of service. From the trailer, it seems like both the actors have equal importance and have given their best.

Veteran director Ranjith, Anna Reshma Rajan, Siddique, Anu Mohan, Sabumon Abdusamad, Anil Nedumangad, Shaju Sreedhar and many others are part of the supporting cast. Sudeep Elamon of ‘Pathinettam Padi’ and ‘Finals’ fame is the cinematographer. Jakes Bejoy handles the music department. The film is produced by director Ranjith and PM Sasidharan under the banner of Gold Coin Motion Picture Company.

Malayalam actor Asif Ali is turning one year older today. Birthday wishes are pouring in for the star from all corners. Colleague and a very close friend, Dulquer Salmaan was among the first to wish Asif. Sharing a photo of them together, Dulquer penned a lovely note to wish his dearest friend. He even revealed that they both were supposed to debut together in ‘Ritu’. Nishan later replaced Dulquer in the Shyamaprasad directorial. In the brief note, Dulquer also praised Asif’s amazing performance as Sleevachan in the recently released ‘Kettyolaanu Ente Malakha’.

Dulquer’s Facebook post reads,

Wishing dearest Asif the best birthday ever ! How amazing was he as Sleevachan ?!! You’ve always been such a stand up guy Asif and a good friend through all these years. I’ve known you atleast 8 years. And we might have even debuted together if I had the courage then. So I’m guessing we were always meant to be friends. Here’s to more amazing movies, great times with family and friends & some superb drives in your favourite rides !

Asif Ali has been on a dream run For the last couple of years. His last release ‘Kettyolaanu Ente Malakha’ was a superhit that won him unanimous praise for. He currently has a handful of projects like ‘Kunjeldho’ directed by Mathukutty, ‘Thattum Vellattam’ with Mridul Nair, ‘Ellaam Shariyaakum’ with Jibu Jacob, Rajeev Ravi’s ‘Kuttavum Shikshayum’ and the anthology segment ‘Rachiyamma’ helmed by Venu.

Confirmed: Karthi’s Kaithi set to be remade in Hindi

The trend of remaking hit South Indian films in Bollywood continues with ‘Kaithi’ being the latest to get a Hindi version. Dream Warrior Pictures, the original producers, announced about the remake plans last day. They are teaming up with Reliance Entertainment to produce the Hindi version. Details regarding the director, cast and other crew members are expected to be revealed shortly.

‘Kaithi’ starring Karthi in the lead had hit screens last October during the Diwali season. Despite facing stiff competition from Vijay’s ‘Bigil’, ‘Kaithi’ had a glorious run thanks to the highly positive word of mouth from the public. It was director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s second outing after he made an impressive debut with ‘Maanagaram’.

The biggest highlight of ‘Kaithi’ was it was a pure action film sans any unnecessary hindrances like songs, romance or a separate comedy track. Critics and commoners unanimously praised the film and it emerged as a blockbuster success. The film ends on a cliffhanger with a potential opening for a second part. Both Karthi and the makers had announced that the sequel is definitely on.

It remains to be seen if the makers of the Hindi version decide to make a faithful remake without any unwanted commercial elements. It all depends on who plays the lead role. Let’s wait for the official word.

Rashmika Mandanna in talks for Suriya 39

Suriya will soon start shooting for his new film with director Hari. The ‘Singam’ combo of Suriya and Hari have worked together multiple times in the past. However, it is learnt that the two are planning to reunite next for a film out of the ‘Singam’ franchise. It will be a complete family entertainer with the regular dose of action and other commercial elements.

Pre-production works for the film (tentatively titled as ‘Suriya 39’) are currently underway. It is reported that the makers had talks with South Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna to play the female lead opposite Suriya. It is worth a mention that, Rashmika is playing Karthi’s pair in his upcoming film ‘Sulthan’. The actress is yet to sign the dotted lines for Suriya’s film. Malavika Mohanan is another other actress in consideration.

Official announcement regarding the Suriya-Hari film will be made very shortly. Kollywood’s leading production house Sun Pictures is said to be producing the film.

Today marks the 8th year since the release of ‘Second Show’. The film saw the arrival of many newcomers like Dulquer Salmaan, Sunny Wayne and Srinath Rajendran. Most of them later went on to carve a niche for themselves in the industry. Incidentally, 8 years after ‘Second Show’, the same team is working together again – this time for an ambitious film titled ‘Kurup’. Earlier in the day, a brief cake cutting was held at the sets of ‘Kurup’ to celebrate the eighth year anniversary of ‘Second Show’.

Photos from the cake cutting have been shared in the film’s official social media handle and they have captioned it as,

‘Kurup’ is based on the real-life criminal Sukumara Kurup. Along with Dulquer, the film’s cast also includes Sunny Wayne, Indrajith Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Sobhitha Dhulipala, Shine Tom Chacko and many others. The much-awaited film is expected to release during the Eid season.

The last decade has seen a world of change in Malayalam cinema in terms of how new talents emerged, the kind of stories told and how films with high artistic quality are being made within the commercial format. Priyadarshan, one of the industry’s most senior and successful filmmakers, acknowledges this change and is aware about how the audience’s sensibilities have changed over time.

Recently, during the Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters, Priyadarshan opened up on how Malayalam cinema has become more realistic in terms of story-telling as well as acting. He even mentioned about how certain films like ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ and ‘Helen’ impressed him. Apparently, after watching these films, he even thought that it’s time for people like him to retire.

‘Kumbalangi Nights’ directed by debutant Madhu C Narayanan broke the conventional concepts of a family set up by telling the relatable stories of two contrasting families. ‘Helen’, also directed by a debutant — Mathukutty Xavier — is a survival thriller that had Anna Ben in the lead. Both the films emerged successful – critically as well as commercially.

Meanwhile, Priyadarshan’s dream project ‘Marakkar Arabikadalinte Simham’ is set for release next month. At the Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters, the director proudly claimed that ‘Marakkar’ will be the Marakkar Arabikadlinte Simham will be the most technically perfect film ever made in the country.

It has been exactly 8 years since the release of Dulquer Salmaan’s debut film ‘Second Show’. Ever year, on this day, Dulquer makes it a point to share a note in his social media to thank his fans, friends and family members who stood by him. This year also, the actor did not forget his usual practice. His recent Facebook post reads,

It’s that time of the year again. An annual reminder of how I stepped into the wonderful magical world of cinema. Over the years I’ve become more secure as an actor and an individual and thereby having the courage to try a variety of roles and languages. I’m not as afraid anymore of taking chances. Of believing. Of leaping. Cause no matter what I have a safety net to save me. The love that you all give me. The love of my friends. And most of all the love of my family. This courage has now allowed me to take this new plunge into producing films I believe in. We are days away from our first ever release and it’s an exciting and nervous time. But I feel stronger and more confident than I was 8 years ago. Thanks to all of you. It’s also ironic that my career has come full circle and I’m back with Srinath and team members of my debut film Second Show, as we surge full speed ahead on our final sched of our ambitious project Kurup. As always I have nothing but gratitude and love to give back to all of you who watch our films and support us through everything. To the film industry that gives back so much if you give it your everything. The amazing people I’ve met and had the opportunity to work with. As mentioned in the note, Dulquer is currently shooting for the final schedule of ‘Kurup’. His next release is ‘Varane Aavashyamund’, which is also his maiden production venture. The film which also stars Shobhana, Suresh Gopi and Kalyani Priyadarshan is slated to hit screens in UAE on February 6 and in India on 7th.

Prithviraj’s epic film Kaaliyan to begin in October

It has been two years since Prithviraj’s epic film ‘Kaaliyan’ got announced. While there were rumours that the project got dropped, the makers have now come out informing that shoot will be beginning this October. The team have been involved in the extensive pre-production works all this while.

Ad filmmaker Mahesh S is making his directorial debut with ‘Kaaliyan’, which is based on the Southern Ballads (Thekkan Paatukal). BT Anil Kumar has scripted the movie after doing research works for nearly five years. This big budget movie is being produced by Rajeev Govindan under the banner of Magic Moon Productions.

‘Kaaliyan’ tells the story of Kunchirakkottu Kali, a warrior who lived in the 17th century in Venad. Kaaliyan was a trusted disciple of Iravikkutty Pillai, a legendary warrior. Though Iraivikutty Pillai and his life story went on to be a part of history, Kaaliyan remained an unsung hero. Reportedly, Prithviraj will be playing the titular role and veteran Tamil actor Sathyraj will be essaying the part of Iravikutty Pillai.

Prithviraj is currently in the process of reducing weight for ‘Aadujeevitham’. He will be shooting for the Blessy directorial from March till September. After that, he will start prepping up for ‘Kaaliyan’, which demands him to undergo intense training in martial arts. The actor will also be working out hard to build a warrior’s physique.

Earlier, the makers has assured that ‘Kaaliyan’ will be made as realistic as possible with minimal graphic works. The team had held talks with action choreographers working in the world famous TV series ‘Game of Thrones’. Bollywood’s leading composer trio Shankar Ehsaan Loy is making their Malayalam debut with ‘Kaaliyan’. National award winnners Shajith Koyeri and Vinesh Banglan will be handling the sound and production design respectively. Prithviraj’s frequent collaborator Sujith Vaassudev has been assigned as the cinematographer.
