Kamal Haasan hints about teaming up with Lokesh Kanagraj!
Two-film old Lokesh Kanagaraj is already knocking the doors of Kollywood’s top league of filmmakers. After making an impressive debut with ‘Maanagaram’, he delivered a huge blockbuster last year with ‘Kaithi’. He is now working on ‘Master’, a real biggie starring Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi in the leads.
Last day, at the Zee Cine Awards, Lokesh was honoured with the Favorite Director of the year award for ‘Kaithi’. He received the award from his idol Kamal Haasan, who was all praise of the young filmmaker. Kamal said that he feels proud about Lokesh for having made a film like ‘Kaithi’. He is quotes saying,
“I feel proud that Lokesh did such a great film like Kaithi and tells that I inspire him. It feels like I myself directed the film. There is something else as well. Will talk about that later.”
Kollywood circles firmly believe that Kamal hinted about teaming up with Lokesh. It is worth a mention that Lokesh is a huge self-confessed Kamal fan. He has often said that it was ‘Virumandi’ that inspired him to make a film like ‘Kaithi’. Reports suggest that the two had met recently to discuss about a project. Kamal’s production house Raaj Kamal International might be producing a new film with Lokesh soon but it is not yet known if Kamal himself will be starring in it.
Fahadh Faasil undergoes a stunning transformation for Malik!
‘Take Off’ director Mahesh Narayanan’s ambitious new film, ‘Malik’ is nearing the final stages of shoot. Anto Joseph Film Company is producing the film, which is being made on a budget of close to Rs 30 crores. Fahadh Faasil plays the lead role and the cast also includes actors like Joju George, Nimisha Sajayan and Vinay Forrt in major roles.
‘Malik’ scripted by director Mahesh himself is actually based on a true incident that occurred some years back in Kerala. It is conceived as a political thriller, centred around a sensitive coastal area where there was a resistance against the constant threat of displacement of a minority community.
Fahadh Faasil plays the lead character, Sulaiman, a person who was responsible for leading his community in their fight against injustice. We hear that his character is actually inspired from a real-life person. The actor will be appearing in multiple looks in the film and he has already lost over 10 kilos. Some leaked stills from the film’s location feature him in a nearly unrecognizable look.
‘Malik’ also has an efficient technical crew comprising of DOP Sanu John Varughese, composer Sushin Shyam, production desinger Santhosh Raman, action choreographer Lee Whittaker and sound designers Vishnu Govind-Sree Sankar of Sound Factory. Besides directing and scripting, Mahesh Narayanan is also editing the film.
The official trailer of Jayasurya starrer ‘Anveshnam’ has been released online. It looks highly promising and gives hints of a proper thriller with an emotional core. The film is directed by Prasobh Vijayan of ‘Lilli’ fame. Mukesh R Mehta, AV Anoop and CV Sarathi are jointly producing it under the banner of E4 Entertainment. The makers had recently confirmed that the film will be hitting screens on January 31.
‘Anveshanam’ stars ‘Pretham’ fame Shruthi Ramachandran as the female lead. Vijay Babu also plays a crucial role in the film. Nandu, Lal, Lena, Leona Lishoy, Srikanth Murali, Jai Vishnu, Shaju Sreedhar and many others are part of the supporting cast.
It is scripted by debutant Francis Thomas with additional screenplay and dialogues penned by Ranjeeth Kamala Sankar and Salil V. Sujith Vaassudev is the cinematographer and music is composed by Jakes Bejoy. Appu Bhattathiri is in charge of the edits while sound design is handled by Vishnu Govind and Sree Sankar of Sound Factory.
Here we take a look at the best male actors of the year from Malayalam cinema. Note that the following list is in no particular order.
1. Suraj Venjaramoodu (Android Kunjappan ver 5.25, Finals, Vikruthi and Driving Licence)
Suraj Venjaramoodu Stills Photos
The list begins with who majority rate as the best performer of the year. Suraj Venjaramoodu was that good this year that he should simply walk away with all the major awards. The actor was part of a whopping 13 films this year, but his performance stood out only in four of them – ‘Finals’, ‘Vikruthi’, ‘Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25’ and ‘Driving Licence’. For an actor who has the potential to make a 10-minute role into a memorable one (remember AHB!), this is more than enough. This year, as an ambitious dad to a sportswoman, a mute family man, an ailing octogenarian and a motor vehicle inspector, Suraj aced it all.
2. Mammootty (Unda)
Megastar Mammootty’s Stills Photos
‘Unda’ was among the most talked about films of the year for the relevant politics it discussed. At the helm of this thought-provoking film is the 68-year-old Mammootty. Mani of ‘Unda’ is in stark contrast to the superstar’s other fiery cop avatars. He is an ordinary policeman, who according to his own confession, has not caught a single thief in his career. Mammootty’s finely measured portrayal brings in lot of authenticity to the character. Like any other man of his age, he is presented with grey hair strands, a slight paunch and is shown as someone suffering from gastric and cardiac issues. It is the case of a superstar forgoing all his image to just be the character.
3. Asif Ali (Uyare, Virus and Kettiyolaanu Ente Maalakha)
Asif Ali Stills Photos
After Suraj, if there is one actor who has won unanimous praise this year, it has to be Asif Ali. Interestingly, it was Asif who delivered the year’s first superhit with ‘Vijay Superum Pournamiyum’. Playing a guy-next-door role must have been a cakewalk for him but what followed next was a highly challenging one. In ‘Uyare’, Asif was terrific as Govind, an over possessive boyfriend. Playing a grey shaded role, the actor delivered what is widely rated as his career best. Asif continued to impress with another powerful act in ‘Virus’, that too among a host of other big stars. He ended the year with a highly impressive performance in ‘Kettyolaan Ente Malakha’ (KEM). Sleevachan of KEM is another layered character that Asif performed with utmost conviction. Deservingly, the film is set to become one of the biggest solo hits of his career.
4. Nivin Pauly (Moothon)
Nivin Pauly Stills Photos
Nivin Pauly in ‘Moothon’ is a classic example of an actor surrendering completely to a director’s vision. The end result is Nivin delivering a stunner of a performance like never before. As the film is set in different timelines, the actor appears in two looks, one as Akbar, an ordinary youngster who identifies his sexual orientation lately and the other as Bhai, a cruel ruffian who controls a part of the Mumbai underbelly. In both these portrayals, Nivin is extremely convincing as he projects different body languages and mannerisms. His heavy, gross physique, in particular, adds immense believability to the sloppy life that Bhai leads. Watch out for these two scenes – the one in front of the mirror after Akbar falls in love for the first time and the final confrontation with Salim (Shashank Arora).
5. Soubin Shahir (Kumbalangi Nights, Virus)
Soubin Shahir Stills Photos
Continuing his rich form from last year was Soubin Shahir. As Saji Napolean, the capricious and irresponsible elder brother in a family of four siblings, Soubin displayed amazing acting chops. The scene where he breaks down uncontrollably while hugging the psychiatrist close is easily among the best cinematic moments in Indian cinema this year. Unnikrishnan, the character in ‘Virus’, though short in duration, was also made memorable by this fine actor.
6. Fahadh Faasil (Kumbalangi Nights)
Fahadh Faasil Stills Photos
Just like Parvathy among the female actors, Fahadh Faasil has also consistently made it to all the ‘best performers’ lists in the last few years. This year, the actor came up with an extraordinary performance while playing Shammi in ‘Kumbalangi Nights’. It is a character that could have faltered severely in the hands of a lesser actor. Fahadh though was unmatchable. As the vile patriarch, who takes it upon himself to ‘protect’ his wife’s family, Fahadh delivers what we can call an eccentric performance. His devilish stares and those evil smiles are images that will be hard to forget for a long time.
7. Shine Tom Chacko (Ishq)
Shine Tom Chacko Stills Photos
In debutant director Anuraj Manohar’s ‘Ishq’, there actually are two leads, Sachy played by Shane Nigam and Alwyn played by Shine Tom Chacko. It is an interestingly woven story where the tables keep turning. The hunter becomes the hunted. Both the actors were brilliant with their performances, with Shine even outperforming Shane at times. Initially, Shine’s Alwyn is shown as this despicable creep you wish to punch on the face but in the latter half, we somewhere start sympathizing with the character, atleast in tiny bits, and that is where Shine scores as an actor. Easily, one of his best ever performances. Also, not to forget his character in ‘Unda’ and his hilarious act in the tense climax.
8. Vinay Forrt (Thamaasha)
Vinay Forrt Stills Photos
2019 saw the comeback of Vinay Forrt, a talented actor whose potential has not been tapped much. In Ashraf Hamza’s heartwarming film ‘Thamaasha’, Vinay played a college professor who is insecure about his baldness. Interestingly, Sreenivasan of ‘Thamaasha’ had shades of Vinay Forrt’s own Vimal, also a professor, from ‘Premam’. However, the actor succeeded in not repeating himself. He played Sreenivasan subtly with a distinct body language by relying more on his quirky facial expressions. With his adorable smile and instantly likeable charm, Vinay Forrt made it easy for the audience to root for Sreenivasan. For almost a year, the actor solely concentrated on this movie and one can easily say that his efforts have bore fruits.
Towards the end of the year, Shane Nigam was constantly in the news for all the wrong reasons. Thanks to the glaring media attention, he is already a household name among the Malayali audience. But leaving aside all the controversies, Shane Nigam is still one of the finest performers we have today and his films this year is a testament to that. His performances in ‘Kumbalangi Nights’, ‘Ishq’ and ‘Valiya Perunnal’ were all equally good and deserved to be talked about. Bobby of ‘KN’ must be among Shane’s most popular characters as it struck a chord instantly with the youth audience. Most of his dialogues from the film are already popular meme materials. In ‘Ishq’, he traversed the fine line between good and evil effortlessly. ‘Valiya Perunnal’ had him in his comfort zone and that ease was there to be seen in his performance. Thanks to this film, his incredible dancing skills were finally utilized properly.
10. Joju George (Chola, Porinju Mariam Jose)
Joju George Stills Photos
The National award winner from last year gave a couple of power-packed performances in 2019, in ‘Chola’ and ‘Porinju Mariam Jose’ (PMJ). In a nameless character in ‘Chola’, he is absolutely ruthless and delivers an astonishing performance. In PMJ, Joju was in a totally different league altogether. His towering physique itself ensured that he looks like a ‘kattalan’. Rather than the gravity defying stunts or the realistically choreographed ones, Joju went the old school way where a character fights with his physical might and the end result here is what we call, pure mass. This is probably the first time that Joju has done a full length mass role and he was safe in the hands of ace filmmaker Joshiy. The actor also proved his versatility by doing brief but notable roles in films like ‘Lonappante Mamodeesa’, ‘June’ and ‘Valiya Perunnal’.
Tovino Thomas’ Ajayante Randam Moshanam to start rolling by mid 2020
A highly ambitious project of Tovino Thomas got announced on New Year’s Day. The film titled ‘Ajayante Randam Moshanam’ be directed by debutant Jithin Lal, a close associate of Tovino since his early days in the film industry. The film produced by UGM Entertainment is scheduled to start rolling in mid 2020.
‘Ajayante Randam Moshanam’ has Tovino playing a triple role for the first time in his career. The star announced the project by releasing an intriguing poster featuring him in three looks. Sujith Nambiar is scripting the film. Tovino plays three characters named Maniyan, Kunjikelu and Ajayan. All three of them are from different timelines 1900, 1950 and 1990s.
Tamil music director Dhibu Ninan Thomas is making his Malayalam debut with this film. The makers are currently working on the pre-production including finalizing the casting process.
Tovino is currently shooting for Minnal Murali, a local-super hero film directed by Basil Joseph. He also has a couple of other exciting projects in the pipeline.
Miya George, Saiju Kurup and Suresh Krishna garner praise for their performance in Driving Licence!
‘Driving Licence’ directed by Jean Paul Lal continues to excel at all the release centres. In its third week of theatrical run, the audience count is still on the rise which indicates that the film has emerged as a clean winner at the Christmas box office. The film scripted by Sachy has Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu in the lead roles.
It has a very interesting storyline, centred around a film star and his ardent fan, who is a motor vehicle inspector. As circumstances turn out, the two lock horns and they constantly try to outsmart each other. It is their clash of ego and power abuse that take the film forward. Though the story revolves primarily around these two characters, there is also a set of well written supporting characters, who manage to make a mark.
Miya George, who plays the role of Suraj Venjaramoodu’s wife is the most impressive among them. It is a character very unlike what the actress has done before. Though it has a caricaturist touch, Miya makes it up with her perfect comic timing and dialogue delivery. Her performance reminded of some of Urvashi’s characters from yesteryear films.
Suresh Krishna’s Bhadran is another talked about character from ‘Driving Licence’. As a frustrated superstar who tries all means to degrade his rival, Hareendran, the veteran brings in a lot of humour. The actor, who was once known for playing typecast villain roles, is proving his versatility with performances like these.
Saiju Kurup as the attention-seeking politician Johny Peringodan is another very interesting character. Like Miya, Saiju’s comic timing is spot on and he is getting widespread appreciation for his performance. Actors like Nandu, Lalu Alex and Arun also have their moments and make an impression in the film.

It is a big budget film in which Jayasurya will be seen playing the role of a priest. We hear that the actor will be going through a major physical transformation for the film.
Jayasurya is known to work on physique according to the needs of a character. In ‘Aposthalan’, he will be seen sporting two different looks. Shoot will begin in Ernakulam by the end of February and later shift to Morocco. After that, he will be taking a break to reduce weight and then complete the remaining portions.
‘Aposthalan’ is scripted by KS Bava and Anwar Huzain. D41: Dhanush’s next with ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ fame Mari Selvaraj starts rolling
Dhanush, of late, has been very busy working on back to back projects. During the release of his blockbuster film ‘Asuran’, he was in London shooting for Karthik Subbaraj’s gangster thriller film. After the completion of the UK schedule, he flew down to shoot the remaining portions of Durai Senthil Kumar’s film ‘Pattas’. He then finished the Madurai schedule of Karthik Subbaraj’s film. Now the actor has started shooting for his new film with Mari Selvaraj of ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ (PP). Such high standards of professionalism and commitment has earned praise from fans and industry insiders.
Dhanush’s next with Pariyerum Perumal fame Mari Selvaraj starts rolling
Shoot for Mari’s film is currently progressing in Tirunelveli. Kalaipuli S Thanu of V Creations is producing the film. Rumoured to be titled as ‘Karnan’, the film is said to be dealing with a relevant issue the struggles of tea plantation workers. Malayalam actor Lal and Natty will be seen in major roles. It is also said that the makers have got Malayali actress Rajisha Vijayan to play the female lead, but it is yet to be confirmed.
On the technical side, Theni Eswar has been signed as the cinematographer and music department will be handled by Santhosh Narayanan.
Suriya’s Soorarai Pottru to clash with Vijay’s Master?
Of late, Kollywood has been witnessing lot of big clashes at the box office. Though trade circles are not very pleased with it since they fear that revenue gets divided unfairly, stars seem to be not very concerned about it. Last year, we got to witness what is probably the biggest clash in Tamil cinema history as Ajith’s ‘Viswasam’ and Rajinikanth’s ‘Petta’ locked horns during the Pongal season. It was followed by a Vijay-Karthi clash during Diwali with ‘Bigil’ and ‘Kaithi’ releasing on the same day.
Latest buzz is that Suriya’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’ and Vijay’s ‘Master’ are eyeing the same release date April 9. The makers are yet to confirm this but trade experts would definitely not want to see another such big clash.
‘Master’ is easily the biggest among the two films as it boasts of a cast that includes Vijay and a bunch of other big stars like Vijay Sethupathi and Malavika Mohanan. Also the fact that, it is director Lokesh’s immediate next after the blockbuster success of ‘Kaithi’ has skyrocketed the expectations.
‘Soorarai Pottru’ meanwhile is a highly ambitious film that many firmly believe will be the much needed comeback for Suriya. Sudha Kongara of ‘Irudhi Suttru’ fame directing the film. Suriya’s own production house is backing the film along with Sikhya Entertainment.
As of now, only the first look posters of these films have released. So it is too early to comment on the release date. Let’s wait and see how things turn out.
