Watch the teaser Biju Menon-Nimisha starrer Nalpathiyonnu here

The official teaser of director Lal Jose’s 25th film, Nalpathiyonnu was released just a while back in social medias. The film stars Biju Menon and Nimisha Sajayan in the lead roles. Scripted by debutant Prageesh PG, the film is inspired from real life events. As per the makers, it is a socio-political satire that unravels through hilarious incidents when two people – a strong religious follower and a follower of communist ideologies set out on a piligrimage to Sabarimala.

From the teaser, ‘Nalpathiyonnu’ looks highly promising. Director Lal Jose has been on a lean patch and it looks he will be making a strong comeback with this film. Several theatre artists and newcomers will also be seen essaying prominent roles in the film. On the technical side, S Kumar has cranked the camera and editing is being done by Ranjan Abraham. Bijibal handles the music department.

‘Nalpathiyonnu’ is scheduled to hit screens next month though the exact date has not yet been announced.

Official: Antony Varghese joins Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi in Thalapathy 64

We were among the first to report about Malayalam actor Antony Varghese making his Kollywood debut with a Vijay starrer. It has now been confirmed that Antony has been signed for Vijay’s next (Thalapathy 64) to be directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. The official announcement was made by the makers just a while back through social medias. Though the nature of Antony’s role is not yet known, it is expected to be a very prominent role.

‘Thalapathy 64’ is said to be a completely different attempt from the usual mass entertainers that Vijay does. Lokesh has earlier directed the sleeper hit ‘Maanagaram’ and the Karthi starrer ‘Kaithi’, which is yet to be released. His new film with Vijay is rumoured to be a gangster thriller. Vijay Sethupathi and Malavika Mohanan will also be part of the cast. The former is reportedly playing a negative role.

On the technical side, music will be handed by Anirudh Ravichander and cinematography will be by Sathyan Sooryan. Xavier Britto is producing the film, shoot for which is set to begin this month. The film is scheduled for a summer release next year.

As reported by us earlier, Vijay’s next (Thalapathy 64) after ‘Bigil’ will be directed by the two-film-old Lokesh Kanagaraj. The film is said to be a completely different attempt from the usual mass entertainers that Vijay does. While shoot is scheduled to begin next month, the film’s cast has got two big additions in Vijay Sethupathi and Malavika Mohanan. Apart from them, Malayalam after Antony Varghese of ‘Angamaly Diaries’ is also rumoured to be part of the film.

‘Thalapathy 64’ is reportedly shaping up as a gangster thriller. As per producer Xavier Britto, it will be a big budget film and shoot will be beginning this month itself. Vijay Sethupathi, who was highly impressed by Lokesh’s script, is reportedly playing the negative role and Malavika has been signed to pair up with Vijay.

Music director Anirudh Ravichander, cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan, editor Philomin Raj, Stunt Silva and art director Satheesh Kumar form the film’s core technical crew.

Aashiq Abu’s Virus wins Best Indian Feature Film Award!

‘Virus’, the medical-investigative thriller directed by Aashiq Abu continues to win laurels. The film has won the Best Indian Feature Film Award at Jagran Film Festival, Mumbai. Aashiq Abu and writers Muhsin Parai, Suhas and Sharfu attended the event. The 10th Jagran Film Festival, a four-day celebration of cinema was commenced last day. Bollywood stars Rahul Bose, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, Divyendu Sharma, Radhika Apte and Kalki Koechlin and renowned film critic Rajeev Masand along with other dignitaries also attended the festival.

‘Virus’ is a semi-fictional account of how the state of Kerala withstood last year’s deadly Nipah virus scare. Writers Muhsin Parari, Suhas and Sharfu came up with what is easily one of the best written screenplays in recent years. The makers also pulled off a casting coup of sorts by assembling several top actors, who all did justice to their characters. Kunchacko Boban, Parvathy, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Poornima Indrajith, Asif Ali, Joju George, Rima Kallingal, Sreenath Bhasi, Madonna Sebastian and Soubin Shahir played major characters in the film.

Though there have been criticisms about the factuality in the story and how the government machinery’s role in the mission was not given prominence, ‘Virus’, from an aesthetic point of view, is a brilliantly made no-nonsense medical investigative thriller. After its release in legal streaming platform Amazon Prime, the film grabbed the attention of a large number of non-Malayali cine lovers. Last month, a special screening of ‘Virus’, which included a Q&A session with the makers was arranged by noted critic Anupama Chopra of Film Companion.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Jayasurya would be teaming up with his ‘Captain’ director Prajesh Sen for a film titled ‘Vellam’. The makers had also released an intriguing first look poster through the star’s official social media handle. Samyuktha Menon of ‘Theevandi’ fame will be playing the female lead in this film. The actress revealed this in an exclusive chat show with Onlookers Media. Samyuktha and Jayasurya have not acted together before, so there is definitely a freshness in casting.

‘Vellam’, scripted by Prajeesh, is said to be the story of a mysterious drunkard based in Kannur. The lead character to be played by Jayasurya is said to be a very challenging one. Apparently, the actor gave open dates for the project as he was highly impressed by Prajesh’s narration. More details regarding the other cast and technical crew members will be announced shortly. The film is being produced by Friendly Productions.

Dulquer Salmaan to play a police officer in his next!

For the last couple of years, Dulquer Salmaan has been doing only occasional films in Malayalam as he was concentrating more in other languages. It now seems like he is finally back to his base. He is currently working on ‘Kurup’ after which he will be starring in Anoop Sathyan’s directorial debut. The latest we hear is that Dulquer has signed a new film with director Rosshan Andrrews. Interestingly, the actor will be playing a police officer in this film. Since his cop role in ‘Vikramadithyan’ lasted only briefly, we can say that this is his first attempt in essaying a full length police officer’s role.

Rosshan Andrrews’ frequent collaborators, the National award winning writer duo Bobby-Sanjay is scripting this film, which is yet to be titled. The writer-director duo had previously done a cop film ‘Mumbai Police’, that wasn’t anything like seen before in Malayalam cinema. So expectations will naturally be huge when they team up with a big star like Dulquer Salmaan.

Shoot is expected to begin in March, before which an official announcement will be made.

Last evening, the trailer of Lijo Jose Pellissery’s ‘Jallikattu’ got leaked online quite unfortunately. The makers were then forced to release the trailer officially. It is an extension version of the already stunning teaser. It is adrenaline pumping, fierce and violent at several points. As expected, the trailer has got massive response from the viewers.

‘Jallikattu’ is actually based on S Hareesh’s short story ‘Maoist’. Taking the crux out of the story, Hareesh along with R Jayakumar have developed a screenplay that explores the beastly side of man. The plot is set in a remote village in Kerala where a buffalo escapes and causes a frenzy of ecstatic violence.

Antony Varghese, Santhy Balachandran, Chemban Vinod Jose and Sabumon play major roles in the film. Its technical crew comprises of DOP Girish Gangadharan, music director Prashanth Pillai, editor Deepu Joseph and sound designer Renganaath Ravee.

After garnering tremendous response at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), expectations for ‘Jallikattu’ have gone sky high. At TIFF, it received widespread appreciated and several forums have rated it among the top 10 genre films of this year. Some have even compared it to the likes of Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’ and ‘The Mad Max Fury’.

‘Jallikattu’ is scheduled to hit screens on October 4.

The Kerala press meet of ‘Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy’ is currently being held in Kochi. Lead actor Chiranjeevi, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Murali Gopy, Arun Gopy, Krishnan Sethukumar and many other leading celebrities are attending the event. While speaking at the event, Prithviraj made a couple of startling revelations. He revealed that Chiranjeevi has bought the remake rights of ‘Lucifer’. He also added that, he was offered an important role in ‘Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy’. However, he could not be part of the film as he was busy with the works of his directorial debut, ‘Lucifer’.

‘Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy’ is an epic period film directed by Surender Reddy. It is based on late freedom fighter Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, who fought the British valiantly much before the Sepoy Mutiny. He was eventually hanged to death by the British government. While Chiranjeevi plays the titular role, the film’s massive cast also includes popular stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Tamannaah, Ravi Kishan, Niharika, Jagapathi Babu, Brahmaji and Kiccha Sudeep. There is a familiar face lacking from Malayalam industry and getting Prithviraj on board would have been perfect.

‘Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy’ is releasing in four languages – Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi. As the release date is closing in, the makers have been aggressively promoting the film. This highly anticipated period film is set to hit screens worldwide on October 2.

Love Action Drama enters Rs 50 crore club, declares Nivin Pauly

The Nivin Pauly-Nayanthara starrer ‘Love Action Drama’ (LAD) has crossed the Rs 50 crore mark. The makers officially announced it by releasing a teaser online. Hitting screens earlier this month during the Onam season, LAD got mixed reviews from the critics. But the general audience seem to have taken up the film as it did well both in the Kerala box office and RoI centers like Banglaore and Chennai.

‘LAD’ marks the directorial debut of Dhyan Sreenivasan. The film had high we expectations prior to its release itself as it was the first time Nivin and Nayanthara were coming together. Nivin, especially, was back to his usual self, as the guy-next-door lover boy.

The film also had a big supporting cast comprising of Aju Varghese, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Dhanya Balakrishnan, Sreenivasan, Renji Panicker, Mallika Sukumaran, Motta Rajendran, Basil Joseph and Durga Krishna among others. Jomon T John and Roby Varghese Raj’s cinematography and Shaan Rahman’s lively music helped a great deal in covering the blips.

Overall, it is a blockbuster maiden venture for the newly launched banner, Funtastic Films headed by Aju Varghese and Vishak Subramaniam.
