Article 15 is the finest mainstream socio political film made in recent history in our country: Prithviraj

Ayushmann Khurrana’s ‘Article 15’ is one of the most acclaimed films in Indian cinema this year. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the film talks about the Article 15 of the Constitution of India, which prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth. Upon its release in June, the film earned widespread critical acclaim and emerged as a huge commercial success as well.

Now that the film is out legally on online streaming platforms, more positive reviews are flowing in. Malayalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran recently got to watch the film and heaped praise on the makers. According to him, ‘Article 15’ is the finest mainstream socio-political film made in recent history in Indian cinema. He has tweeted,

Lijo Jose Pellissery and team head to Toronto for Jallikattu world premier

As we already know, Lijo Jose Pellisser’s ‘Jallikattu’ is set to have its world premier at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The festival is scheduled to be held from September 5-15. Lijo, Chemban Vinod Jose, cinematographer Girish Gangadharan and writer S Hareesh have already started their journey to Toronto. Besides ‘Jallikattu’, another Malayalam film, ‘Moothon’, is also having its world premier at TIFF.

There has been a highly talk about ‘Jallikattu’ in the TIFF circles. Several critics who have already got a chance to watch the movie have been raving about it. Some have even called it the Indian equivalent of Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’. In the official website of TIFF, ‘Jallikattu’ is described as a film presenting the portrait of a remote village in Kerala where a buffalo escapes and causes a frenzy of ecstatic violence.

‘Jallikattu’ is actually based on S Hareesh’s short story ‘Maoist’. The original story discusses about the maoist situation and a person’s right to freedom, from the perspective of two buffaloes. As per Lijo’s words, ‘Jallikattu’ is a satire told with lot of humour. Taking the crux out of the short story, Hareesh along with R Jayakumar have developed a screenplay that explores the beastly side of man.

The movie stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad, Santhy Balachandran and many others. Its technical crew comprises of composer Prashanth Pillai editor Deepu Joseph and sound designer Renganaath Ravee. It is expected to have a worldwide theatrical release in October.

Mammootty to unveil the first look poster of Edakkad Battalion 06

The first look poster of Tovino Thomas’ new film ‘Edakkad Battalion 06’ will be released by Mammootty. The poster will be out through his official social media handle on September 5 at 4 PM. Debutant Swapnesh K Nair, a former associate of Omar Lulu, is directing the film.

Actor-writer P Balachandran has scripted ‘Edakkad Battalion 06’. He has earlier penned acclaimed films like ‘Ulladakkam’, ‘Pavithram’, ‘Agnidevan’ and ‘Punaradhivasam’. He last scripted the Rajeev Ravi directorial ‘Kammattipaadam’. This new film has Tovino playing the role of an army officer. Though the actor has done cop roles before, this is the first time he’ll be seen as an army man.

Samyuktha Menon plays the female lead in ‘Edakkad Battalion 06’. This is her foruth outing with Tovino after sharing screen space with him in ‘Theevandi’, ‘Uyare’ and ‘Kalki’. In the technical front, Sinu Sidharth is cranking the camera and Kailas Menon handles the music department. Rathin Radhakrishnan is the editor.

Shrikant Bhasi, Thomas Joseph Pattathanam and Jayant Mammen are jointly producing ‘Edakkad Battalion 06’ under the banner of Ruby Films.

Dhanush’s new film with ‘Petta’ director Karthik Subbaraj is all set to begin in UK. Malayali actress Aishwarya Lekshmi plays the female lead in the film and the actress has already landed there. The film is planned as gangster-thriller and it has now got a big addition from Hollywood. James Cosmo, known for his appearances in films like ‘Braveheart’, ‘Troy’, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion’, as well as the popular TV series ‘Game of Thrones’ has been signed to play a very crucial part in the film.

Earlier, there were reports about Karthik Subbaraj wanting to sign the legendary Al Pacino for this role but nothing materialized. Karthik welcomed the veteran James Cosmo by tweeting,

Ganagandharvan teaser to be released tomorrow

The makers of Mammootty’s upcoming film ‘Ganagandharvan’ has announced that its teaser will be out tomorrow (September 4) at 7 PM. Following that, the movie’s trailer will also be released on September 7, which happens to Mammootty’s birthday. It promises to be a back to back treat for the actor’s fans.

The Ramesh Pisharody directorial is touted to be a fun filled entertainer that has Mammootty in the role of a ‘ganamela’ singer named Kaladasan Ullas. Pisharody and Hari Nair have jointly scripted the movie. It is being produced jointly by Ichais Productions and Ramesh Pisharody Entertainments.

Debutante Vanditha Manoharan plays the female lead. The movie also has a big supporting cast which includes Mukesh, Manoj K Jayan, Suresh Krishna, Arya, Kalabhavan Prajod, Sunil Sukhada, Johny Antony, Abu Salim, Salim Kumar, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Hareesh Kanaran, Ashokan, Innocent and Maniyanpilla Raju among others.

Veteran cinematographer Azhagappan, music director Deepak Dev and editor Lijo Paul form the core technical crew. ‘Ganagandharvan’ is expected to hit screens by the end of this month.

Rajisha to play the female lead in Dhanush’s next with Pariyerum Perumal fame Mari Selvaraj?

As reported by us earlier, Dhanush has committed for a movie with director Mari Selvaraj of ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ fame. Kalaipuli S Thanu of V Creations is producing the movie, which has tentatively been titled as ‘Karnan’. Buzz is that Malayali actress Rajisha Vijayan is in talks to play the female lead in the film. The makers are yet to announce this officially, but it will be huge if it turns out to be true.

Rajisha is easily one of the most talented heroines in Malayalam at present. She won the Kerala State Award for Best Actress for her performance in her debut film ‘Anuraga Karikkin Vellam’. After a couple of lacklustre outings, she did the coming-of-age flick, ‘June’ that emerged as a big hit at the box office. She is currently awaiting the release of ‘Finals’, which has her in the role of a cyclist.

If Rajisha has indeed signed Dhanush’s film it will prove to be a big launch for her in Tamil. Director Mari Selvaraj’s debut film ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ was widely rated as one of the finest movies in Indian cinema last year. Naturally, his film with Dhanush has high expectations among the Tamil audience. They are planning to start shoot by the end of this year. We still await a formal announcement.

He is set to team up with director Deepu Karunakaran and scenarist Unni R for a new film titled ‘Railway Guard’. He made the announcement by sharing the title poster, and along with that a note which reads,

There, at the end of a goods train that carry anything from coal to grains, he keeps watch alone. THE RAILWAY GUARD.

So, from the briefing, we can make out that its a story of a railway guard posted in the remote areas of North East India. The setting is new and a full-fledged story of a railway guard has not been attempted in Malayalam before. Hence sounds like a very interesting film.

Prithviraj had earlier worked with director Deepu Karunakaran in ‘Teja Bhai & Family’. But this his first outing with Unni R, who has penned acclaimed films like ‘Munnariyippu’ and ‘Charlie’.

As reported by us earlier, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Soubin Shahir are coming together for a new movie titled as ‘Vikrithi’. Its teaser was released last day in social medias. The teaser features both the lead actors, Sudhi Koppa, Jaffer Idukki and Pauly Valsan. Suraj Venjaramoodu and Soubin Shahir are acting as leads together for the first time. From the teaser, the film looks promising as well. It seems to be one of those slice-of-life films with a feel good element in it.

Emcy Joseph aka MC Joseph is directing the movie. It is scripted by Ajeesh P Thomas. ‘Vikrithi’ has cinematography by Alby, music composed by Bijibal and edits handled by Ayoob Khan. Going by the title ‘Nirbhaya’, which means fearless, Shaji’s new film looks like a heroine-centric one. It must be noted that ‘Nirbhaya’ was the name given to the 2012 Delhi rape victim.
