Moothon premiering at Toronto International Film Festival

Nivin Pauly’s ‘Moothon’ (The Elder One) is set to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This year’s festival is scheduled to be held from September 5-15. ‘Moothon’ has also been chosen as the opening film at the 20th edition of Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, which will be held from October 17-24.

Written and directed by Geetu Mohandas, ‘Moothon’ tells the story of a man called Mullakoya from Lakshadweep. As per the details in TIFF website, Geetu Mohandas presents an unsparing yet inspiring vision of Mumbai through the story of two small-town siblings, each with their own reason for escaping to the big city, in this urgent drama pondering gender, sexuality, violence, and tolerance.

Soubin Shahir’s ‘Ambili’ got released on August 9 in Kerala and has opened to largely positive reviews from all corners. The movie is releasing in Gulf centres from today (August 14). World Wide Films have bagged the distribution rights. The movie is being released in major centres in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Baharain.

‘Ambili’ is written and directed by John Paul George of ‘Guppy’ fame. Just like this debut film, this one is also a clean feel-good entertainer. It is powered by a fantastic performance from its lead actor, Soubin Shahir. It is part a road movie as well as its shot in various locations across the country. The movie has been shot in various states across the country.

Soubin plays the titular role of Ambili. Nazriya Nazim’s younger brother Naveen Nazim and debutante Tanvi Ram have essayed the other two major roles. Jaffer Idukki, Vettukili Prakash, Neena Kurup, Binu Pappu and Sreelatha Nampoothiri are also part of the film’s supporting cast.

On the technical front, Sharan Velayudhan, a noted cinematographer in the ad film industry, has wielded the camera. Kiran Das has done the edits and music is composed by Vishnu Vijay. Mukesh R Mehta, AV Anoop and CV Sarathy have produced it under the banner of E4 Entertainment.

In the official website of TIFF, ‘Jallikattu’ is described as a film presenting a portrait of a remote village in Kerala where a buffalo escapes and causes a frenzy of ecstatic violence. Starring Antony Varghese in the lead, the movie is based on S Hareesh’s short story ‘Maoist’. The original story discusses about the Maoist situation and a person’s right to freedom, from the perspective of two buffaloes.

Viswasam technical team retained for Suriya’s next with Siva

As announced earlier, Suriya and director Siva will be teaming up for a new film to be produced by KE Gnanavel Raja. Tentatively titled as ‘Suriya 39’, this film is expected to be a mass-masala entertainer on the lines of the director’s previous films. Last day, the technical crew of the movie was announced by the makers. Music department will be handed by D Imman and cinematography by Vetri. Milan is in charge of the art department and stunts will be choreographed by Dilip Subbarayan. Ruben has been signed as the editor.

This is basically the reunion of the core technical team of the mega blockbuster ‘Viswasam’, also directed by Siva. The phenomenal success of ‘Viswasam’ has automatically increased the expectations on ‘Suriya 39’. It has been some time since Suriya has had a proper blockbuster. Fans will be hoping that director Siva and his team can come up with one.

Suriya himself has pinned high hopes on the film. Recently, in an interview, he had opened up about high excited he is about the film as the script demands him to step out of his usual comfort zone. He even cited the example of Amitabh Bachchan’s films that have good story, wholesome entertainment, and at the same time provide ample scope for performance. Suriya firmly believes that his upcoming film with director Siva will be a similar one.

‘Nerkonda Paarvai, the official remake of ‘Pink’ has opened to highly positive response in Tamil Nadu. As per reports from trade experts, the movie has already crossed the Rs 50 crore mark at the TN box office and is turning out to be a run away hit. Along with the commercial gains, the movie is also getting appreciation for the relevant issues it addresses quite effectively. Many celebs have come forward praising lead actor Ajith for his decision to take up such an important film.

Superstar Rajinikanth recently got to watch ‘Nerkonda Paarvai’. He was impressed by it and called Ajith to appreciate him. Earlier, actors Suriya and his wife Jyothika had sent flower bouquets as a token of love to Ajith and the movie’s director H Vinoth. It is extremely gratifying to see such graceful camaraderie existing between top stars within an industry.

‘Nerkonda Paarvai’ is produced by Boney Kapoor, husband of late actress Sridevi. Ajith has reprised Amitabh Bachchan’s role from the original. Shraddha Srinath is essaying the role done by Taapsee Pannu. It also marks Bollywood actess Vidya Balan’s debut in Tamil. She had done the role of Ajith’s wife in it. Kalki Koechlin is also making a guest appearance in a song sequence.

Karthik Subbaraj to produce a mystery thriller starring Keerthy Suresh

Keerthy Suresh is on an all-time high after bagging the coveted National award for best actress. She won the award for her exemplary performance in the Savitri biopic ‘Mahanati’ aka ‘Nadigayar Thilagam’. The pretty actress currently has some interesting films in her kitty. Following the footsteps of actors like Nayanthara, Jyothika and Amala Paul, Keerthy is also taking up solo lead films.

One of her new projects was announced last day. Keerthy took to her social media handle to announce the project and she sounded pretty excited about it. Her tweet reads,

Debutant Eashvar Karthic will be directing the Tamil film, which is said to be an emotional mystery thriller. Director Karthik Subbaraj’s banner Stone Bench Films will be presenting it. Santhosh Narayanan has been to signed to compose the music. Others in the technical crew are mostly newcomers. Shoot for this yet-to-be titled film begins this September in Kodaikanal.

Aashiq Abu, Syam Pushkaran and Dileesh Pothan to collaborate for a new version of Gangster!

Aashiq Abu’s filmmaking career has seen some rapid highs and lows. One of the biggest failures in his career is the Mammootty starrer ‘Gangster’, that got released in the year 2014. Prior to its release, expectations and the hype surrounding it were at such levels, that the makers failed miserably to satisfy the audience.

In a recent interview to Film Companion, Aashiq Abu concurred that the failure of ‘Gangster’ was a huge blow. He admitted that it was made just out of a fascination to do a gangster flick with Mammootty, without proper work going behind it. Abu also revealed that during the halfway stage of the making itself he could sense that things have gone wrong. Though he tried to cover it up with some gimmicks, it just didn’t work with the Malayali audience.

Now it seems like Aashiq Abu is trying to redeem for the movie’s failure. In the FC interview, he disclosed that he is planning to make a better version of ‘Gangster’. Syam Pushkaran will be scripting the film with additional inputs from Dileesh Pothan. Apparently, it the duo’s idea to make a second version of the film.

This new film will be based on the idea on which they were supposed to make ‘Gangster’ originally. If things go as per plans, they will be starting shoot next year. It is not yet known if Mammootty will be retained or will the team be opting for an entirely new cast.

Let’s wait for an official confirmation.

The long wait for Nivin Pauly’s ‘Moothon’ is finally coming to an end. It has been chosen to be screened as the opening film at this year’s Mumbai Film Festival. The 20th edition of Jio MAMI festival will be held from October 17-24. This is probably the first time a Malayalam film is opening at the MAMI. Directed by by actress-turned-filmmaker Geetu Mohandas, ‘Moothon’ tells the story of a man called Mullakoya from Lakshadweep. The movie is centred around his journey to find his brother. ‘Moothon’ is actually an island slang for elder brother.

Expectations are huge on ‘Moothon’ as some of the biggest names in Indian cinema are associated with it. Shoot resumes for Kamal Haasan-Shankar team’s Indian 2

After an indefinite shelving in January, ‘Indian 2’ has finally resumed today (August 12). Actress Rakul Preet Singh, who is playing an important role in the film, took to her social media handle to share a photo taken from the movie’s sets. It is just great coincidence that the film resumed today when fans are celebrating 60 Years of Kamal Haasan’s cinema career.

‘Indian 2’ is the sequel to Kamal’s own classic hit ‘Indian’, released back in 1996. Shankar, who helmed the original, is directing this film as well. Kamal will be reprising his role of Senapathi, a freedom fighter-turned-vigilante. Along with him, ‘Indian 2’ also has some other big star presence. Bollywood action star Vidyut Jammwal, Kajal Agarwal, Rakul Preet, Siddharth, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Aishwarya Rajesh are also said to be part of the cast.

Shankar has written the movie’s screenplay and dialogues are penned by Jeyamohan, Kabilan Vairmuthu and Lakshmi Saravanakumar. Composer Anirudh Ravichander, cinematographer Ravi Varman, editor Sreekar Prasad and production designer Muthuraj form the core technical crew. Lyca Productions is producing the film and it is reported that they are investing a lavish budget of over Rs 200 crores. The makers are planning it as a summer release next year.

‘Andhadun’ won Sriram Raghavan the Best Director award and Zoya Akthar’s ‘Gully Boy’ won the award for Best Fillm. Rima Das’ ‘Bulbul Can Sing’ was chosen as the Best Indie Film. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan was also felicitated with the Excellence in Cinema award.

During the customary press meet at IFFM, Shah Rukh Khan was all praise for Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi and he even went on to call the ‘Vikram Vedha’ star as the most wonderful actor he has seen in my entire life. It is quite a huge achievement for Vijay Sethupathi, who rose up from humble beginnings, to get such words of appreciation from SRK, who is arguably the biggest superstar of Indian Cinema. The actor competed with the likes of Ayushman Khuranna, Ranveer Singh, Manoj Bajpai, Amitabh Bachchan, Vicky Kaushal and Namdev Gaurav to win the Best Actor award at IFFM.

Meanwhile, at the press meet, Vijay Sethupathi also revealed that he will be sharing screen space with Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan. shortly.
