Jallikkattu gears up for release; Phars Films bag the Middle East rights

Lijo Jose Pellissery’s ‘Jallikattu’ has been in the making for nearly a year and it is one film that it unanimously awaited by Malayali as well as non-Malayali cinephiles. If reports are to be believed, the movie will hit screens in October. Phars Films have already bagged the Middle East distribution rights.

‘Jallikkattu’ was recently watched by celebs like Indrajith Sukumaran, Geetu Mohandas and Anurag Kashyap and they all had high words of praise for it. Since Lijo’s last two films – ‘Angamaly Diairies’ and ‘Ee Maa Yau’ got nationwide attention, expectations are huge on ‘Jallikattu’.

The movie starring Antony Varghese and Sabumon in major roles is based on S Hareesh’s short story ‘Maoist’. It discusses about the Maoist situation and a person’s right to freedom, from the perspective of two buffaloes. According to Lijo, ‘Jallikkattu’ is a satire told with lot of humour. Taking the crux out of Hareesh’s short story, they have developed a screenplay which explores the beastly side of man.

The Ramesh Pisharody directorial ‘Ganagandharvan’ is nearing completion with just a couple of more days of shoot left. Mammootty has already finished his portions. The movie has him playing the role of a ganamela singer named Kaladasan Ullas. Interestingly, Mammootty will be seen sporting three getups in the movie, one of which has him with a long hair.

‘Ganagandharvan’ promises to be a complete fun entertainer. Pisharody and Hari Nair have jointly scripted the movie. Debutante Vanditha Manoharan and Athulya are the female leads. Its elaborate supporting cast comprises of Mukesh, Manoj K Jayan, Suresh Krishna, Abu Salim, Salim Kumar, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Hareesh Kanaran, Ashokan, Raffi, Johny Antony, Innocent and Maniyanpilla Raju among others.

Veteran cinematographer Azhagappan, music director Deepak Dev and editor Lijo Paul form the core technical crew. ‘Ganagandharvan’ is being produced jointly by Ichais Productions and Ramesh Pisharody Entertainments. It is slated to hit screens during Onam in September.

Looking forward to watch Moothon, says Suriya

The wait for Nivin Pauly’s ‘Moothon’ has reached nearly two years now. The fact that the makers have been very secretive about the film has raised the curiosity of the audience. Interestingly, not just the common audience, even celebs are eagerly waiting for the movie. Recently, when Nivin Pauly wished Suriya for his birthday, the latter replied back by tweeting thank you and also adding that he is looking forward to watch ‘Moothon’. It must be remembered that Suriya had also released the movie’s teaser in January.

Helmed by actress-turned-filmmaker Geetu Mohandas, ‘Moothon’ tells the story of a man called Mullakoya from Lakshadweep. The movie is centred around his journey to find his brother. ‘Moothon’ is actually an island slang for elder brother. Expectations are huge as the movie has some of the leading technicians in Indian cinema associated with it.

Geetu Mohandas has penned the story while ace Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has collaborated with her in writing the Hindi dialogues. Geetu’s husband Rajeev Ravi, also an acclaimed filmmaker, is the cinematographer and National award winner Ajithkumar is editing the movie.

Mohanlal starts dubbing for Kaappaan

‘Kaappaan’ is gearing up to hit screens next month. The makers are currently busy with the final set of post-production works. Mohanlal recently started dubbing for his portions. As informed earlier, he plays the Indian Prime Minister’s role in the movie. The KV Anand directorial marks the first time coming together of South cinema’s two top stars – Mohanlal and Suriya.

‘Kaappaan’ is touted to be an action packed thriller. While Mohanlal plays the Prime Minister’s role, Suriya essays the role of a high-rank National Security Guard (NSG) officer, who is in charge of the PM’s security. Arya also plays a prominent role as Mohanlal’s son. The cast also includes Sayyeshaa, Boman Irani, Shamna Kasim and Samuthirakani.

Lyca Productions is producing ‘Kaappaan’. Besides Tamil, the movie is also releasing in Telugu. The Telugu version has been titled as ‘Bandobast’. Both the Tamil and Telugu versions are expected to be released simultaneously on August 30.

Vidyasagar to compose music for Dileep’s My Santa

As reported by us recently, Dileep is teaming up with director Sugeeth for a new film titled as ‘My Santa’. Pre-production works for the movie have already begun. The makers have signed Vidyasagar to compose music for the movie. The veteran has been away from Malayalam briefly, so he will be trying to make a strong comeback. His last work in Malayalam was ‘Jomomte Suvisheshangal’, which was released in 2016.

‘My Santa’ is touted to be a full-on fun entertainer, in which Dileep and a bunch of kids play the major roles. Vidyasagar has earlier composed for Dileep films like ‘CID Moosa’, ‘Chanthupottu’, ‘Rasikan’ etc. He has also collaborated with director Sugeeth in ‘Ordinary’ and ‘3 Dots’.

Dileep meanwhile is busy wrapping up his portions for ‘Jack Daniel’. After its completion, he will be shooting for the remaining portions of his ambitious 3D film ‘Professor Dinkan’. ‘My Santa’ will start rolling after that. The movie has been planned as a Christmas release.

The title and first look poster of Jayasurya’s new film was unveiled just a while back through his official social media handle. The movie titled as ‘Anveshanam’ is directed by Prasobh Vijayan, who made an impressive debut last year with ‘Lilli’. Mukesh R Mehta, AV Anoop and CV Sarathi are jointly producing the movie under the banner of E4 Entertainment.

‘Anveshanam’ stars ‘Pretham’ fame Shruthi Ramachandran as the female lead. Vijay Babu also plays a crucial role in the film. It is scripted by debutant Francis Thomas. Additional screenplay and dialogues are penned by Ranjeeth Kamala Sankar and Salil V. Sujith Vaassudev is the cinematographer and music is by Jakes Bejoy. Appu Bhattathiri is in charge of the edits while sound design is handled by Vishnu Govind and Sree Sankar of Sound Factory.

As informed by the makers, the official trailer of ‘Margamkali’ has been released online. Starring Bibin George and Namitha in the lead roles, the movie promises to be a complete fun filled entertainer. It is directed by Sreejith Vijayan of ‘Kuttanadan Marapapa’ fame. Story and screenplay is penned by debutant Shashankan, while dialogues are written by lead actor Bibin himself.

‘Margamkali’ has a big supporting comprising of ’96’ fame Gouri Kishan, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Baiju Santhosh, Hareesh Kanaran, Surabhi Santhosh, Shanthi Krishna, Siddique, Soumya Menon, Bindu Panicker and many others are part of the supporting cast. In the technical side, Arvind Krishna has wielded then camera and music is by Gopi Sunder. Johnkutty is in charge of the editing department.

‘Margamkali’ is being produced jointly by Alwin Antony and Listin Stephen under the banners of Magic Frames and Ananya Films. The movie is scheduled to hit screens next month.

Recently, we had reported about legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan getting a biopic. Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi has been confirmed to play Murali’s part in it. The movie which is said to be titled as ‘800’ will be directed by MS Sripathi. It will be made in Tamil and released in several other languages. Dar Motion Pictures is producing it in association with another leading South Indian production house. It has been planned to be shot across India, England, Srilanka and a couple of other countries.

In a statement, Vijay Sethupathi has said that he feels proud to be be part of the Muttiah Muralitharan biopic. He said, “Portraying the role of Murali is going to be a challenge for me and I’m looking forward to it. I’m delighted that Murali himself will be closely involved with the project and guiding me on the cricketing aspects. I’m thankful to both Murali and the producers for the faith they have bestowed on me.”

Muttiah Muralitharan added that he felt honoured that an accomplished actor such as Vijay Sethupathi will be playing him in the biopic. “I’m glad to be collaborating with Dar Motion Pictures on the film. We are looking at a late 2020 release date. I have been actively collaborating with the creative team for the past several months and I’ll continue to support this project through its duration.”

Muralitharan is unarguably one of the greatest spinners to have played the game of cricket. A Tamilian by birth, Murali was born and brought up in Sri Lanka. He made his cricketing debut in 1992 and played for Sri Lanka till 2011. Even after eight years from his retirement, he still holds the world record for the most number of wickets in both test (800) and one-day cricket (534).

Veteran filmmaker Shyamaprasad is well known for successfully adapting several literary works. Interestingly, his next is also an adaptation. Anees Salim’s popular novel The Small Town Sea is being made as ‘Kasiminte Kadal’ by Shyamaprasad. As per a report in TOI, shoot for the movie has already commenced in Varkala.

Harish Uthaman, a noted actor in Tamil and Malayalam, will be playing the lead role in the movie. The story is about a 13-year-old boy who is forced to shift from a buzzing city life to a peaceful seaside town with his terminally ill father, whose last wish is to die listening to the waves like in his younger days.

Harish Uthaman will be playing the father’s role. Arya Salim, noted for her performances in films like ‘Ee Maa Yau’, ‘French Viplavam’ and ‘Thamaasha’ will be seen as his wife. The movie has a bunch of lesser known actors like Niranjan, Koothattukulam Leela, Maya and Krishapriya Nazeer. More details are expected to be revealed by the makers soon.

Saif Ali Khan and Rajkummar Rao in talks for Jigarthanda remake

Karthik Subbaraj’s ‘Jigarthanda’ is a widely acclaimed Tamil film. There have been several talks about the movie getting remade in Hindi but nothing materialized. Ajay Devgn had initially wanted to remake the movie in Hindi with Farhan Akthar and Sanjay Dutt in the lead roles. Nishikant Kamat was supposed to helm it but it didn’t take off. It now seems like Sajid Nadiadwala is reviving the project with a new team.

Abhisek Chaubey, well known for helming films like ‘Ishqiya’, ‘Udta Punjab’ and ‘Sonchiriya’, has now been signed to helm Hindi version of ‘Jigarthanda’. Though the makers are yet to announce the cast officially, it is reported that they are trying to rope in Rajkummar Rao and Saif Ali Khan.

‘Jigarthanda’ is a gangster-comedy film that had Bobby Simha and Siddharth in the lead roles. It is a about a filmmaker who sets out to make an action film based on a real life gangster. Siddharth played the filmmaker’s role while Bobby Simha did the gangster’s part. The movie went on to win a couple of National awards including the best supporting actor award for Bobby Simha.

Apparently, the Hindi version will be adapted to suit the sensibilities of the native audience. The original film was set in Madurai but the Hindi version will be based in Maharashtra. As opposed to the rustic portrayal in ‘Jigarthanda’, the remake version will have a more stylish approach.

An official announcement is expected to be made shortly.
