Nithya Menen signs a Dangal-like sports film in Malayalam
Nithya Menen is one of the leading heroines in the South. The actress is well known for taking up only meaty roles that offer scope for performance. She currently has a list of exciting projects in her kitty, which includes the NTR biopic and Jayalalitha biopic. In Malayalam, the actress has signed for a new sports movie, which is based on a national level athlete.
Malayalam cinema has had very few sports based films. It will be interesting to see what Nithya Menen’s project has to offer. The actress herself revealed this in a recent interview. Though she didn’t divulge other details about the movie, she confirmed that it will be a big project on the lines of Bollywood blockbuster ‘Dangal’. She is quoted saying, “I am doing a Malayalam film about a national level athlete. It’s going to be like Dangal.”
Meanwhile, Nithya is shooting in Kerala for ‘Kolambi’, directed by TK Rajeev Kumar. She had recently signed for her debut Hindi film, ‘Mission Mangalyaan’, in which she will be playing a scientist’s role. The movie directed by Jagan Shakti also stars Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Tapsee Pannu, Sharman Joshi and Sonakshi Sinha.
Few years back it was reported that Dileep would be doing a film called ‘Pickpocket’. But there was no follow up and the actor soon became busy with other projects. After a long gap, news about the movie has once again surfaced online as the makers are reviving it. The long shelved project is finally set to go on floors next year. P Balachandra Kumar, who has directed the Asif Ali starrer ‘Cowboy’, will be helming this movie.
‘Pickpocket’ is a big budget film which will be extensively shot in Brazil. As per the makers, Dileep plays a pickpocket’s role in the film and the actor will trained by Bob Arno, a famous comedy pickpocket entertainer. Rafi is scripting the movie, which is touted to be a fun entertainer. The movie will have a Hollywood actor as the villain and casting process for the same is currently underway.
In the technical crew, Nadirshah will be handling the music department and Kaecha has been signed as the action choreographer. Manush Nandan, who has worked in films like ‘Happy New Year’ and ‘Manmadhan Ambu’, has been roped in to crank the camera. More details about the movie are expected to be revealed shortly.
Vijay Sethupathi appears in multiple looks in Seethakaathi
Vijay Sethupathi’s long delayed ‘Seethakathi’ is gearing up to hit screens next month. Last day, the makers released a new poster in social medias. The actor is seen sporting a middle-aged man’s look. Already three posters have been released and he sports a different look in each one of them. The movie has him playing the role of a drama artist.
‘Seethakaathi’ directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan is said to be a social drama. The movie has high expectations among the audience. Vijay Sethupathi will be appearing in three different age groups – that of a 75, 50 and 30-year-old in the movie. The first look poster had him in a nearly unrecognizable look of a 75-year-old man. Oscar Award-winning make up artist Kevin Haney has designed the actor’s look in the movie.
‘Seethakathi’ cast also includes Archana, J Mahendran, Bagavathy Perumal, Rajkumar, Parvatii Nair and Remya Nambeesan. Govind Vasantha, who won hearts with his music in ’96’, is the composer for this movie as well. It is being produced jointly by Sudhan Sundaram, Umesh, Jayaram and Arun Vaidyanathan under the banner of Passion Studios.
Shoot for Ajith’s Viswasam has finally been wrapped up. The movie directed by Siva is touted to be a mass commercial entertainer. Ajith is said to be playing a dual role in the movie. The first look poster which had Ajith in two different looks also indicted the same. Nayanthara plays the female lead in the movie. Other supporting cast includes Yogi Babu, Vivek, Ravia Wana, Anikha, Thambi Ramaiah, Bose Venkat, Robo Shankar and Kovai Sarala.
Viswasam is Ajith’s fourth film and third on the trot with director Siva. They had earlier worked together in Veeram, Vedhalam and Vivegam. While Veeram and Vedhalam were regular mass entertainers, Vivegam was an ambitious attempt in making a spy-thriller. The movie made on a lavish budget with a big star cast failed to impress the audience and ended up as a disappointing affair at the box office. The actor-director will be hoping to comeback to winning ways with Viswasam.
Viswasam’s technical crew includes DOP Vetri, music director D Imman and editor Ruben. Sathya Jyothi Films is funding the movie. The makers are working towards a smooth release for next Pongal in January

Oru Kuprasidha Payyan: An engaging crime drama backed ably by good performances
Oru Kuprasidha Payyan, the latest film starring Tovino Thomas has hit screens today. Madhupal has directed the movie which also has Saranya Ponvannan, Nimisha Sajayan, Anu Sithara and Nedumudi Venu in major roles. Here’s the review in detail.
Ajayan (Tovino Thomas) is a naive youngster who earns his living by working in a hotel. An orphan, Ajayan yearns for love and care. He finds solace in the care of Chembammal (Saranya Ponvannan), a middle-aged Tamil woman who supplies food items to the hotel where Ajayan works. One fine day, a gruesome incident occurs in their locality and Ajayan is wrongly framed in the case. Whether justice is served for a vulnerable youngster like Ajayan is what the movie discusses.

Jeevan Job Thomas has scripted the movie based on some real life incidents. The screenplay follows a routine path with the regular establishment of characters followed by the conflict. Things speed up once the investigation part sets in. We are shown how our police system operates to wrongly frame an individual. With the arrival of a set of new characters, the second half becomes an absorbing court-room drama.

Like his earlier films, ‘Thalappavu’ and ‘Ozhimuri’, director Madhupal has discussed many relevant topics here as well. Islamophobia, gender issues in work place, ill effects of casteism and sexual abuse are some of them. With proper conviction, the director has cared not to spoon-feed the audience. By providing enough cues, the makers have left some crucial portions to the audience’s imagination.

Coming to the performances, Tovino has done his part well. Though he looked out of place in the initial few portions, he gradually gets into the character and brings his emotional side to the table. The shy body language and minimal dialogues lend more authenticity to his performance. Nimisha Sajayan is perhaps the best performer among the solid cast. Her character Hanna Elizabeth is a representative of the working class women who strive hard to make a mark in a male dominated profession. The character arc is convincingly brought on-screen with Nimisha showing a good range of emotions. Despite sharing most of her screen space with veterans like Nedumudi Venu and Siddique, the young actress manages to stand out. Her earnest act in the final few moments is a delight to watch. Saranya Ponvannan also has a well sketched character and needless to say, the actress has delivered her best. Anu Sithara, Balu Varghese and Suresh Kumar are the other notable performers.

Ouseppachan has composed a couple of good songs and his background score works well to incite the tension. With a run-time of nearly 150 minutes, we get a feel that a few portions could have been trimmed, like the jail fight sequence, which seems to be added for commercial purpose.

Overall, Oru Kuprasidha Payyan is a crime drama that engages despite following the conventional path. By addressing some important issues in the society, the makers have neatly presented their progressive politics as well. Tovino Thomas can be proud of carefully picking such good films.
