Markkar: Arabikadalinte Simham to go on floors on December 1

Priyadarshan’s magnum opus Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham is getting ready to start rolling from December 1. The movie has been in the pre-production phase for months now. Huge set works are progressing in Ramoji Rao Film City, where major portions will be shot. This epic film is planned to be made on a budget of Rs 100 crores. Aashirvad Cinemas, Confident Group and Moonshot Entertainment are coming together to produce what is one of the most expensive projects in Malayalam cinema till date.

The movie is based on the life of Kunjali Marakkar IV. Kunjali Marakkar was the title given to the naval chief of Zamorin of Calicut
in the 16th century, whose duty was to protect the coast against the invading Portuguese army. Mohanlal plays the titular role while his son Pranav plays the younger part of his character. Veteran actor Madhu has been signed to essay the role of the first of the four Markkars, Kutyali Marakkar.

Arjun Sarja, Suniel Shetty, Mukesh, Keerthy Suresh, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Manju Warrier, Pooja Kumar and many other top actors are part of the elaborate star cast. Few British and Chinese actors will also be seen in major roles in the movie. In the technical front, Priyadarshan has got Sabu Cyril to handle the production design. National award winner Tirru is the DOP. Some other leading technicians from India and abroad will be associated with this ambitious project.

The makers are planning to wrap up the shoot by March next year and the film will be released only in 2020 as it demands extensive post production works.

French Viplavam has an experimental, never-before-seen style of story-telling: Director Maju

Sunny Wayne starrer French Viplavam is gearing up to hit screens this Friday (October 26). The movie directed by debutant Maju KB is a fun entertainer with a period backdrop, set in the 90s. Newcomers Anwar Ali, Shajeer Sha and Shajeer Jaleel have jointly scripted this movie. It has an interesting storyline centered around the fun incidents that occur in a village following the anti-liquor policy that was imposed in 1996.

In a recent interview to NIE, director Maju KB revealed that they have employed a realistic tone for the narrative. According to him, the movie has an experimental, never-before-seen style of story telling. Entire shoot was wrapped up in just 22 days. From the trailer and promos, the movie looks very promising and has the potential to emerge a winner.

French Viplavam has Sunny Wayne playing the role of a chef. His character named Sathyan is a lazy guy working in a village resort who likes to hang around with his friends all the time. Since the time period is different, the actor sports a new look in the movie. His costumes and looks have all been deisgned accordingly. The movie promsies to explore a different dimension of Sunny Wayne, the actor. Newcomer Arya Salim has been paired with him.

Chemban Vinod Jose and veteran actor Lal are also essaying major roles in the movie. Sasi Kallinga, Vishnu, Lukman Lukku, Noby, Merin Jose Pottackal, Unnimaya Prasad and Krishna are also part of the movie’s supporting cast. In the technical front, Pappinu has cranked the camera and Deepu Joseph is handling the edits. Prashanth Pillai is composing music for the movie.

French Viplavam is being produced by Shajeer Jaleel and Jafar Khan under the banner of Abba Creations.

Rakesh Sharma biopic starring Shah Rukh Khan titled as Saare Jahaan Se Achcha

Bollywood’s love for biopics continue. For the last few months, there have been lot of speculations about the biopic of India’s legendary astronaut Rakesh Sharma. Initially, it was reported that Aamir Khan will be starring in the movie but it has now been confirmed that the project has reached Shah Rukh Khan’s hands. Mahesh Mathai of ‘Broken Thread’ and ‘Bhopal Express’ fame will be directing the movie, which has been titled as ‘Saare Jahaan Se Achcha’.

Rakesh Sharma is a former Air Force Pilot who flew aboard Soyuz T-11 in 1984, as part of a joint program between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Soviet Intercosmos space program. He had spent 7 days 21 hours and 40 minutes in space and remains to this day the only Indian to travel to space. His biopic has been scripted by Anjum Rajabali, best known for his work in films such as ‘Ghulam’, ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ and ‘Raajneeti’. The movie will be jointly produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and Ronnie Screwvala under the banners of Roy Kapur Films and RSVP Films.

While the project was initially announced with Aamir Khan, it was reported that Katrina Kaif will also be there in an important role. However, latest reports suggest that the makers have signed Bhumi Pednekar. An official announcement with details regarding the whole cast and crew is expected to be made shortly.

Thala Ajith’s Viswasam is currently in the final stages of shoot. The team is presently in Mumbai for the final schedule. The makers are working towards a smooth release for next Pongal in January. It has now been announced that the second look poster will be released tomorrow (October 25) at 10.30 AM in social medias.

Viswasam directed by Siva is touted to be a mass commercial entertainer. Ajith is said to be playing a dual role in the movie. The first look poster which had Ajith in two different looks also indicted the same. The star had recently completed dubbing for all his talkie portions shot so far. Nayanthara plays the female lead in the movie. Other supporting cast includes Vivek, Ravia Wana, Anikha, Thambi Ramaiah, Bose Venkat, Robo Shankar, Kovai Sarala and Yogi Babu.

Viswasam is Ajith’s fourth film and third on the trot with director Siva. They had earlier collaborated for Veeram, Vedhalam and Vivegam. While Veeram and Vedhalam were regular mass entertainers, Vivegam was an ambitious attempt in making a spy-thriller. The movie made on a lavish budget with a big star cast failed to impress the critics. The actor-director will be trying to comeback to winning ways with Viswasam.

Sarkar set to release in record number of screens in Kerala

Vijay is arguably the most popular non-Malayali actor in Kerala. His movies have always had rousing reception here and the welcoming is most often bigger than the ones for Malayalam superstars. As his new film Sarkar gears up for release, there is a good positive buzz in trade circles. The movie directed by AR Murugadoss is touted to be a political thriller. Vijay’s previous two collaborations with the director – Kaththi and Thuppakki – were massive blockbusters in the state, so expectations are huge this time as well.

Ifar International bagged Sarkar’s Kerala distribution rights for a huge amount. They are now planning to release the movie in record number of screens in the state. Theatre chartings have already started. Along with that fan clubs are also organizing exclusive early morning shows for their members.

Since the movie is slated to release on Diwali day, it is most likely to break the opening day collection record in Kerala. The actor’s last film Mersal, which was also released on Diwali day, had a record opening and did huge overall business here. With Sarkar, trade experts have predicted another huge blockbuster.

Kunchacko Boban starrer ‘Johny Johny Yes Appa’ is gearing up for release. As informed earlier, a new song from the movie has been released today in social medias. From the trailer and songs, the movie looks like a fun filled entertainer, aimed mainly at the family audience. The movie is being directed by Marthandan and scripted by Joji Thomas of ‘Vellimoonga’ fame.

Director Marthandan is known for his films like ‘Deivathinte Swantham Cleetus’, ‘Acha Din’ and ‘Pavada’. ‘Johny Johny Yes Appa’ is also expected to be on similar lines to his earlier works. The movie has Anu Sithara as Kunchako Boban’s romantic interest. Mamta Mohandas is also there in a very prominent role. Tini Tom, Sharafudheen, Kalabhavan Shajon, Vijayaraghavan, Master Sanoop Santhosh, Anikha and Geeta are also part of the supporting cast.

In the technical crew, Vinod Illampally cranks the camera and Shaan Rahman handles the music department. Vaishaka Rajan is producing the movie under the banner of Vaishaka Films. The makers have announced that the movie will hit screens this coming Friday (October 26).

Vada Chennai does great business at the international box office

Vada Chennai continues to do good business across all the release centres. Releasing on October 17, the movie opened to excellent reviews from both critics and commoners. Many leading critics have rated it as one of the finest gangster flicks ever made in Indian cinema. Not just in Tamil Nadu, the movie is doing well in overseas centres as well.

As per trade analyst Ramesh Bala, the movie has collected Rs 2.19 cr in USA, Rs 44.51 Lacs in Australia, Rs 46.28 Lacs in UK and Rs 30.84 Lacs in Malaysia, by the end of first weekend. His tweet reads,

Vada Chennai is an epic gangster saga that spans different timelines. The movie traces the life of a set of people based in the North Chennai region. It explores the social and political setting of the place and the functioning of their underworld. The movie is expected to continue its good run in the coming weeks as well.

Along with Dhanush, actors like Ameer, Andrea Jeremiah, Aishwarya Rajesh, Samuthirakani, Daniel Balaji, Kishore, Pawan and Radha Ravi have essayed other major roles in the movie. Dhanush’s own banner Wunderbar Films is producing the movie jointly with Lyca Productions.

Ee Maa Yau and Sudani From Nigeria selected to compete in 23rd IFFK

The 23rd International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) this year will be held in Thiruvananthapuram from December 7 to 13. Due to the floods that rocked the State, there was an uncertainty regarding the festival. However, the government has decided to go ahead with the festival, but as a low key affair. The festival will feature 120 films and is expected to be attend by around 12,000 delegates. The delegate fee has been hiked from Rs 650 to Rs 2,000 this year.

From Malayalam cinema, Zakariya’s Sudani From Nigeria and Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Ee Maa Yau have been selected in the competition category. In the Malayalam today section, twelve films have been selected, which includes Soubin Shahir’s Parava, Aashiq Abu’s Mayaanadhi, B Ajith Kumar’s Eeda and Jayaraj’s Bhayanakam. Interestingly, among the fourteen films selected for screening, ten of them are directed by debutants.

Earlier this year, Sudani From Nigeria and Ee Maa Yau had won widespread critical acclaim during their theatrical run. Ee Maa Yau also wondering three awards at the State level – best director (Lijo Jose Pellissery), best supporting actress (Pauly Valsan), sound design (Renganath Ravee).

As ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ (ToH) gears up for release next month, promotion works are on in full swing. Tye makers had earlier released a teaser of the song, Vashmalle, which met with good response from the viewers. The full version of the song has been released today. Sukhwinder Singh and Vishal Dadlani have sung this fun track, which is set to tunes by composer duo Ajay-Atul. The video features actors Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan and Fathima Sana Sheikh. Prabhudeva has choreographed the dance moves.

ToH directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya is an adaptation of the 1839 novel ‘Confessions of a Thug’. The plot is set in the pre-independence era in the 18th century and has pirates as part of its narrative. Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Fathima Sana Sheikh play major roles in the movie.

ToH has been made on a huge budget by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films. It is slated for a grand worldwide release on November 8.

Vijay Sethupathi has been on a signing spree for the last couple of years. He has multiple projects in his kitty and he has added one more to the list. He is reuniting with his mentor Seenu Ramasamy for a new film to be produced by composer Yuvan Shankar Raja. The official announcement was made last day through social media. The movie has been tentatively titled as Maamanithan.
