96 is a blockbuster in Kerala; Vijay Sethupathi’s first solo hit

’96’, the romantic drama starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha is the current talk of the town. Directed by debutant Prem Kumar, 96 is a poignant tale of how two childhood sweethearts meet after two decades for a school reunion. The movie has been getting unanimous appreciation from all corners ever since its release on October 4. Both Critics and commoners have rated it as one of the finest romantic flicks that have come out of Tamil cinema it recent years.

In Kerala, 96 is witnessing phenomenal response with most shows running to packed houses. The movie was released here on October 5 in around 80 screens in the first week. Due to the highly positive word of mouth and increasing count, the screen count was increased to 106.

Popular trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai tweeted,

The Kerala rights of for 96 was acquired for Rs 50 lakhs and the movie has earned double the amount already. This is by far the biggest hit of Vijay Sethupathi in the state. Previously, his ‘Vikram Vedha’, which also had Madhavan in the lead, had performed well here.

As we had reported earlier, Kunchacko Boban is teaming up with director Marthandan for a new movie titled ‘Johny Johny Yes Appa’. The movie scripted by Joji Thomas of ‘Vellimoonga’ fame is touted to be a fun-filled family entertainer. The makers have released a new song in social medias. The track is rendered by composer Deepak Dev’s daughter Devika Deepak Dev and Bijibal’s son Devath Bijibal.

Director Marthandan is known for his films like ‘Deivathinte Swantham Cleetus’, ‘Acha Din’ and ‘Pavada’. ‘Johny Johny Yes Appa’ is also expected to be on similar lines to his earlier works. The movie has Anu Sithara as Kunchako Boban’s pair. This is their second outing together after ‘Ramante Edanthottam’. Johny.. also has Mamta Mohandas in a very crucial role. Tini Tom, Sharafudheen, Kalabhavan Shajon, Vijayaraghavan, Master Sanoop and Geeta are also part of the supporting cast.

In the technical crew, Vinod Illampally cranks the camera and Shaan Rahman handles the music department. Vaishaka Rajan is producing the movie under the banner of Vaishaka Films.

The journey of ‘Vada Chennai’ began 15 years back: Dhanush

The much talked about Dhanush starrer ‘Vada Chennai’ is gearing up for release. The movie marks his reunion with multiple National award winnning director Vetrimaran. After earning an A certificate for its gritty and raw moments, the movie is all set to hit screens on October 17. Dhanush’s own banner Wunderbar Films is funding the movie jointly with Lyca Productions.

‘Vada Chennai’ is an epic gangster saga that spans different timelines. In a recent interaction with media, Dhanush revealed that the project was first planned 15 years back. Vetrimaran had pitched the idea back in 2003 but they didn’t have the budget or the market to make such a film. Later, they joined hands for ‘Polladhavan’ and ‘Aadukalam’. Both the films did well, both critically and commercially.

‘Vada Chennai’ was again revived in 2016. They worked on the movie for ground 29 months in multiple schedules. Since it is a vast story set in different timelines, they could not bring everything together in one film. So they planned the movie as a trilogy. Already 20% of the second part has been completed. They are also planning to release the prequel of ‘Vada Chennai’ as a web series by next July.

‘Vada Chennai’ has director Ameer playing a major role alongside Dhanush. Andrea Jeremiah, Aishwarya Rajesh, Samuthirakani, Daniel Balaji Kishore, Karunas, Pawan and Radha Ravi will be seen in other supporting roles

Kayamkulam Kochunni becomes the highest opening day grosser in Malayalam cinema!

Kayamkulam Kochunni hit screens last day amidst huge hype. In Kerala alone, the movie was released in a whopping 364 theatres. As expected the movie has set the new record for highest opening day grosser in Malayalam cinema. As per the numbers released by the makers, the movie has grossed Rs 5.30 crores from all the centres in Kerala. SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion still holds the record for highest opening day gross in Kerala. From the 62 shows in the multiplexes in Kochi, Kayamkulam Kochunni has earned Rs 19.12 lakhs while in Trivandrum multiplexes, it has managed to gross Rs 18.28 lakhs.

The movie directed by Rosshan Andrrews is based on Kerala’s legendary highwayman, Kochunni. Nivin Pauly plays the titular role in the movie. Along with Nivin Pauly, the presence of Mohanlal in the cast is the movie’s major selling point. Bobby-Sanjay has adapted the movie from the popular folk stories of Kerala and have given their own interpretation to it. Critic reviews have mostly been positive while there are a few mixed reviews among the netizens. The movie is expected to continue the good run in the coming days as well. Since there are no other big releases till Diwali in November, Kochunni is certain to have a free run.

Made on a budget of Rs 45 crores, Kayakulam Kochunni is one of the most expensive movies ever made in Malayalam cinema. Gokulam Gopalan of Sri Gokulam Films has produced the movie.

Riding on a string of hit films, Tovino Thomas has successfully established himself as a bankable actor. Of late, he has been on a signing spree. He has committed for a new project with debutant directorJose Sebastian. The movie has been titled as ‘Ente Ummante Peru’ and its first look was released today in social medias. Tovino and veteran actress Urvasi feature in the poster. From the title, we presume the movie to be an endearing story of a mother-son relationship.

‘Ente Ummante Peru’ is scripted jointly by Jose Sebastian and Sarath R Nair. Shoot for the movie has already commenced. Hareesh Kannran and Mamukoya are playing crucial roles in the movie. Jordi Plannel Closa is the cinematographer and Gopi Sunder handles the music department. Mahesh Narayanan is the editor. The movie is being produced jointly by Anto Jospeh Film Company and Al Tari Movies.

Tovino recently wrapped up the Canada schedule of Salim Ahamed’s ‘And The Oscar Goes To’. He also has a couple of schedules left for Prithviraj directorial ‘Lucifer’, that has Mohanlal in the lead. ‘Luca’ with debutant Arun Bose, an untitled travel film with director Jeo Baby and ‘Kalki’ with Praveen Prabharam are his other upcoming films. His next to hit screens is Madhupal’s ‘Oru Kuprasidha Payyan’, slated for release on November 9. His maiden straight Tamil film ‘Maari 2’, in which he plays the villain opposite Dhanush, is also gearing up for release.

Anirudh Ravichander to release the first song from Ladoo

Ladoo is an upcoming romantic fun entertainer starring Vinay Forrt, Shabareesh Varma and Balu Varghese in the lead roles. Debutant Arun George K David is directing this movie. The makers have planned to release the first song earlier itself but it has now been postponed to Sunday (October 14). Young sensation Anirudh Ravichander will be releasing the song through his social media handle on Sunday morning 10 AM.

Sagar Sathayn has scripted Ladoo as a romantic comedy. The movie evolves over a few fun incidents that occur during a trip. A group of friends are on a journey from Trissur to Kothamangalam for the wedding of one of them. Vinay Forrt plays the groom’s character while Balu Varghese and Sabareesh Varma will be seen as his friends. National award winning Tamil actor Bobby Simha is also said to be essaying a crucial cameo role in the movie. Dileesh Pothan, Manoj Guinness and Saju Navodaya are also part of the cast.

Ladoo has music by Rajesh Murugesan of ‘Premam’ and ‘Neram’ fame. Gautham Sankar of ‘Theevandi’ fame wields the camera and Lal Krishnan handles the edits. S Vinod Kumar is producing the movie under the banner of Mini Studio. It is scheduled to hit screens next month

Kayamkulam Kochunni Review

Amidst tremendous hype, the Rosshan Andrrews directorial Kayamkulam Kochunni has hit screens today. Nivin Pauly plays the titular role in this movie, while superstar Mohanlal is there in an extended cameo as Ithikkara Pakki. The writer duo of Bobby-Sanjay has scripted this movie.

As publicized by the makers, Kayamkulam Kochunni is not a biopic of the legendary highwayman. It is the fictionalized version of Kochunni’s life. It chronicles the events that force him to become a robber. Bobby and Sanjay have adapted the story from Kottarathil Sankunni’s Aithihyamala and given their own interpretations to it. Too many cinematic liberties are there in the film, which will be disappointing to those who expect a real historic drama.

Nivin Pauly has tried his best to give life to Kochunni, but the larger-than-image nature of the character is too big for a limited actor like him. He is very stiff and lacked the flexibility of someone who are trained in kalaripayattu. Same is the case with Sunny Wayne, who plays the typical jealous guy. Babu Antony gets a meaty role and he has played his part well. Priya Anand and Manikandan Achari were the other notable performers.

Prior to the release, the main attraction of the movie was Mohanlal’s character, Ithikkara Pakki. And one can say easily say that his portions are the best in the entire 170-odd-minute film. He makes an appearance at a very crucial juncture in the film. He suited the role perfectly as the it demanded someone of his stature. As the menacing Pakki, his screen presence is terrific.

Technically, Kayamkulam Kochunni is a top work with Binod Pradhan’s frames that displayed the grandeur in making. Since it is a period film, the movie has lot of VFX works. While Gopi Sunder’s songs fail to impress, his background score is adequate. Sound design by PM designer capture the mood of the movie and setting perfectly.

Overall, Kayamkulam Kochunni is a very interesting film with lot of efforts taken by the team. It is a brave attempt that deserves a theatrical watch.

Dhanush-Vetrimaran combo is one of the most favorite actor-director duos in Tamil film industry. They have previously collaborated for acclaimed films like ‘Polladhavan’, ‘Aadukalam’ and ‘Visaranai’. ‘Aadukalam’ alone won six awards at the National level, which included two for Vetrimaran (best director and best scriptwriter) and best actor for Dhanush. ‘Visaranai’, which was co-produced by Dhanush, also won multiple National awards. It was also India’s official submissions to the 89th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

After years of waiting, the first part from their gangster saga ‘Vada Chennai’ is finally releasing this Wednesday (October 17). A trilogy, ‘Vada Chennai’ follows the life of a set of people from North Chennai traversing three different timelines. Around 20% of the second part has already been shot. While talks about ‘Vada Chennai’ are yet to settle down, Dhanush and Vetrimaran are teaming up for another film out of the trilogy. This new film will start rolling next week. The actor himself revealed this in a recent press meet. Details regarding the genre or other cast and crew members were not revealed.

The movie marks Fahadh’s second outing with ace filmmaker Sathyan Anthikad, after the successful ‘Oru Indian Pranayakadha’. Sreenivasan-Sathyan Anthikad combo is reuniting a 16-year-long gap with this movie. The writer-director duo have delivered several memorable films in the past.

‘Njan Prakashan’ is said to be a typical Sreenivasan style satire. The movie has Fahadh Faasil playing the role Prakashan, an average Malayali youth. Nikhila Vimal, noted for her performances in films like ‘Love 24×7’ and ‘Aravindante Athidhikal’, is paired with Fahadh. Sreenivasan is also essaying a crucial role in the movie.

In the technical side, S Kumar, a regular in Sathyan Anthikad films is wielding the camera and Shaan Rahman is handling th music department. The actor appears in a stylish new look in the movie.

‘Mikahel’ also has another young star, Unni Mukundan in a prominent role. Manjima Mohan, JD Chakravarthy, Siddique, Renji Panciker, Ashokan, Shanthi Krishna, Kalabhavan Shajon and KPAC Lalitha are part of the supporting cast. Shoot is currently progressing in Kozhikode.
