Santhosh Sivan, one of the most wanted cinematographers in Indian cinema, is also a highly revered filmmaker. His last directorial in Malayalam, Urumi, a historic-thriller, was both hugely successful. After a seven-year-long gap, it seems like Sivan is all set for a comeback to Malayalam cinema. As per latest reports, he is planning to direct a movie with Kalidas Jayaram, Manju Warrier and Soubin Shahir in the lead roles.

Earlier this year, Santhosh Sivan had announced a movie based on Kunjali Markkar, but it looks like it will take some more time to actually go on floors. August Cinema is funding the film which has superstar Mammootty playing the lead role. Since it is a period film, it demands a lot of pre-production works and the makers are currently on it.

Meanwhile, Sivan will be directing his new movie with Kalidas. A Dubai based company, Lensman Studios is backing the movie. If reports are to be believed, the movie will start rolling next month. Seasoned actors like Suraj Venjaramoodu, Aju Varghese, Nedumudi Venu and Ramesh Pisharody are also part of the cast. Reportedly, many acclaimed technicians from Bollywood and overseas will also be involved in the technical side.

An official announcement of the movie is expected to be made very shortly. Stay tuned to this space for more updates.

Rajinikanth’s next with Karthik Subbaraj, Petta, is a hugely hyped film. The recent title announcement was celebrated widely in social medias. Shoot for the movie is currently progressing in Lucknow. A couple of location stills of Rajinikanth have gone viral in social medias. In the photos, the actor is seen sporting a bearded look, like the one that is seen in the first look poster.

Petta has an incredible star cast, probably the biggest in Tamil cinema in recent years. Vijay Sethupathi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bobby Simha, Simran, Trisha and Megha Akash are playing major roles alongside Rajinikanth. Guru Somasundaram, Munishkanth Ramdoss, Sanath Reddy, Deepak Paramesh, Manikandan Achari and ‘Aadukalam’ Naren are also part of the supporting cast.

Reportedly, the movie has Rajinikanth playing the role of a teacher in a Christian seminary . He has a lesser known dark past and that is crux of the movie. Vijay Sethupathi is said to be playing the antagonist in the movie. 70% of shoot has already been completed and the makers are planning to wrap up by the end of this year.

The movie’s technical crew includes National award winning cinematographer Tirru, composer Anirudh, editor Vivek Harshan and action choreographer Peter Hein. Kalanithi Maran is producing movie under the banner of Sun Pictures.

Jeethu Joseph’s next with Kalidas Jayaram starts rolling

As we had reported earlier, director Jeethu Joseph’s next in Malayalam is with the promising young actor, Kalidas Jayaram. The movie started rolling today in Ernakulam with a customary pooja and switch on ceremony. Apart from the cast and crew, the function was also attended by actor Jayaram, producers Antony Perumbavoor, Vijay Babu and many others from within the industry.

Buzz is that the movie has been titled as ‘Mister Rowdy’, but it has not yet been announced officially.
Gokulam Gopalan’s Sree Gokulam movies is producing the movie in association with Vintage Films. As per reports, Aparna Balamurali has been signed as Kalidas’ pair in the movie. Shebin Benson, Ganapathi, ‘Oru Mexican Aparatha’ fame Vishnu Govindan are also part of the cast. More details are expected to be made official shortly.

Kalidas also has a bunch of other films coming up. The actor, who made an impressive debut with Poomaram, has been bagging some very interesting projects lately. He has committed for films with directors like Aashiq Abu, Midhun Manuel Thomas and Alphonse Puthren. A film with 100th Monkey Movies, the makers of ‘Rakshadikari Baiju’, is also in the pipeline.

2.0 is the continuation of Enthiran aka Robot, but not exactly a sequel. The first part was as a massive hit across the country. This time the expectations are multifold as two of Indian cinema’s biggest superstars are coming together for the first time. 2.0 marks the South Indian debut of Akshay. He is playing the villain role opposite superstar Rajinikanth. Akshay’s character is reportedly that of an evil scientist. As per his words, it is the most powerful character in his career so far.

Shankar has scripted the movie jointly with Jeyamohan. Many internationally acclaimed technicians are associated with 2.0. The movie is scheduled to hit screens worldwide. The much awaited teaser, both Hindi and Tamil version, will be released on September 13.

Pre-production works in full swing for Prithviraj’s epic film Kaaliyan!

It is already known that Prithviraj will be starring in an epic period film, Kaaliyan. Ad filmmaker Mahesh S is making his directorial debut with this movie based on the Southern Ballads (Thekkan Paatukal). BT Anil Kumar has scripted the movie after doing research works for nearly five years. This big budget movie is being funded by Magic Moon Productions.

Since it is an epic period-drama, the movie demands extensive pre-production and the makers are currently on it. They have hired animation experts from India and abroad to develop the pre-visualization digital story board. A Trivandrum based IT company is involved in the process, which they are hoping to complete in six months time.

After that, the makers will start the audition process. All the actors will have to undergo rigorous training prior to shoot. Along with Prithviraj, veteran Tamil actor Sathyaraj will also be there in a problem role in the movie. Kaaliyan movie tells the story of Kunchirakkottu Kali, a warrior who lived in the 17th century in Venad. Kaaliyan was a trusted disciple of Iravikkutty Pillai, a legendary warrior. Though Iraivikutty Pillai and his life story went on to be a part of history, Kaaliyan remained an unsung hero.

Prithviraj will be starting his preparations for Kaaliyan after he finishes works for his directorial debut ‘Lucifer’. Kaaliyan demands him to undergo intense training in martial arts. The actor who is well known for his commitment, will also be working out to build a warrior’s physique.

Technically, unlike the usual VFX-heavy period films, Kaaliyan has been planned to be made as realistic as possible with minimal graphic works. The team is also in talks with action choreographers working in the world famous TV series ‘Game of Thrones’. Their plan is to use novel and realistic stunts in the movie.

Bollywood’s leading composer trio Shankar Ehsaan Loy is making their Malayalam debut with Kaaliyan. Sujith Vaassudev has been signed as the cinematographer and National award winner Shajith Koyeri will be handling the sound design

The floods that wreaked havoc in Kerala had a a severe effect on the Malayalam film industry as well. The Onam season this year was a dampener with no new releases. Many highly anticipated films had to be postponed and one among them was the Mammootty starrer Oru Kuttanadan Blog. From its promos and song, the movie looks super impressive and gives the vibes of a colourful entertainer for the families. The movie will now have an all India release on September 14.

Scenarist Sethu makes his directorial debut with his movie. Set in the Kuttanadan village of Krishnapuram, the movie has Mammootty playing a big brother like role. Anu Sithara, Raai Laxmi and Shamna Kasim play the three female leads. Sunny Wayne is also there in a crucial cameo role in the movie.

Jacob Gregory, Shaheen Siddique, Vivek Gopan, Sanju Sivaram and Jude Anthany Joseph, Nedumudi Venu, Siddique, Vineeth Kumar, Lalu Alex, Thesni Khan, Nandan Unni and Sohan Seenulal comprise the huge supporting cast. ‘Idea Star Singer’ fame Sreenath Sivasankaran handles the music department. Interestingly, actor Unni Mukundan has rendered a fun track in the movie.

Sivakarthikeyan’s Seemaraja is gearing up to hit screens. The movie which marks his third time association with director Ponram, is touted to be a rural mass comedy entertainer. The movie has Samantha paired with Sivakarthikeyan for the first time. A new song featuring the lead pair has been released in social medias. The song titled, Machakanni is penned by Yugabharathi and sung by composer Imman himself.

Apart from Samantha, Seemaraja also has Keerthy Suresh in a cameo role. The movie has a bunch of negative characters. Simran, one of the leading heroines of her time, is playing one of the antagonists. Malayali actor Lal, Soori, Napoleon, KS Ravikumar, Motta Rajendran, Sathish, Yogi Babu and Manobala are also part of the supporting cast.

Seemaraja’s technical crew includes composer D Imman, cinematographer Balasubramaniem and National award winning editor Vivek Harshan. Sivakarthikeyan-Ponram team’s previous outings, Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam and Rajini Murugan, were commercial hits. So they will be hoping to continue the successful run.
