Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham slated as next Onam release

Priyadarshan’s magnum opus Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham with Mohanlal is set to go on floors on Kerala Piravi Day (November 1). Pre-production works for the movie are currently progressing at a brisk pace. It is an epic film planned to be made on a whopping budget of over Rs 100 crores. Aashirvad Cinemas, Confident Group and Moonshot Entertainment are jointly funding this movie.

Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas has informed that they are planning to release the movie for next Onam. Shoot will extend up to six months and since it is a VFX heavy film, post-production works will also take time. The makers are currently in the process of signing some of the best available technicians, both from India as well as from abroad.

Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham tells the story of Kunjali Marakkar and Mohanlal plays the titular role.
Kunjali Marakkar was the title given to the naval chief in the 16th century, to protect the coast against the invading Portuguese army. There were four key Kunjali Marakkars during that era. The story of Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham is reportedly based on the fourth Marakkar whose life apparently had the most interesting elements.

According to Priyadarshan, the movie will be a semi-fictions one with bits of history and imagination. While Mohanlal plays the fourth Marakkar, veteran actor Madhu is playing the first among them, named Kutyali Marakkar. Pranav Mohanlal will be essaying the younger part of Mohanlal’s character. Tamil actor Prabhu has also been signed to play a crucial role in the movie. The makers are also in talks with some Arabic and Chinese actors. In the technical front, Sabu Cyril handles the production design. For cranking the camera, Priyadarshan has got the National award winning Tirru on board.

An International Local Story: Harisree Ashokan’s directorial debut starts rolling

As reported by us earlier, Harisree Ashokan is joining the list of actors-turned-filmmakers. His directorial debut titled as ‘An International Local Story’ commenced with a customary pooja ceremony at Town Hall, Ernakulam. Directors Joshiy and Siddique did the switch on and first clap respectively. M Shijith and Shaheer Shan are jointly producing the movie under the banner of S Square Cinemas.

An International Local Story promises to be a fun entertainer. Harisree Ashokan in a recent interview said that he has been planning to direct a film for the last nine years. He finally decided to turn a filmmaker once he felt he got the apt subject.

An International Local Story has an elaborate star cast comprising of Rahul Madhav, Dharmajan Bolgatty, ‘Kuttanadan Marpapa’ fame Surabhi Santhosh, Biju Kuttan, ‘Varathan’ fame Namitha, Deepak Parambol, Suresh Krishna, Manoj K. Jayan and Nandu. The shooting for the film is all set to kick-start by September 10 and the locations will be in and around Ernakulam.

Kalidas Jayaram’s next with Jeethu Joseph titled as Mister Rowdy?

As we had reported earlier, Jeethu Joseph’s next in Malayalam will be with Kalidas Jayaram. The movie has reportedly been titled as ‘Mister Rowdy’. Jeethu himself has scripted the movie which is set to go on floors from the 9th of this month in Ernakulam. Aparna Balamurali has been signed as Kalidas’ pair in the movie. Shebin Benson, Ganapathi, ‘Oru Mexican Aparatha’ fame Vishnu Govindan are also part of the cast. More details are expected to be announced shortly.

Post Poomaram, Kalidas has bagged a handful of exciting projects. He has committed for films with promising directors like Aashiq Abu, Midhun Manuel Thomas and Alphonse Puthren. His film with Aashiq Abu, ‘Virus’, is a multistarrer based on the Nipah outbreak. The youngster is teaming up with ‘Aadu’ fame Midhun for a fun entertainer titled ‘Argentina Fans Kattoorkadavu’. Alphonse Puthren of ‘Premam’ fame is set to direct Kalidas in a Tamil movie.

As per latest reports, Kalidas has also signed for a new movie wit 100th Monkey Movies, the makers of ‘Rakshadikari Baiju’. Director Joshy Mathew’s son Sudip Joshy and his wife Geetika Sudip will be directing the movie.

Tovino Thomas to play Kozhikode district collector in Aashiq Abu’s Virus

Recently, director Aashiq Abu announced that his next movie will be based on the deadly Nipah outbreak in Kerala. The movie titled as ‘Virus’ has a stellar star cast comprising of Revathy, Tovino Thomas, Parvathy, Asif Ali, Rima Kallingal, Kalidas Jayaram, Soubin Shahir, Dileesh Pothan, Chemban Vinod Jose and Remya Nambeeshan. Muhsin Parari, Suhas and Sharfu have jointly scripted the movie based on some real-life incidents that happened during the virus outbreak.

As we had reported earlier, the movie has veteran actress Revathy playing the role of Health Minister KK Shailaja and Rima Kallingal as nurse Lini Puthussery, who contracted Nipah and passed away while treating the virus affected patients. It is now learnt that Tovino Thomas will be playing the role of Kozhikode collector UV Jose in Virus.

Tovino Thomas, who is going through a glorious phase, has got a very crucial role to play in the movie as Kozhikode district collector was one of the prominent faces in the fight against Nipah. Contrary to reports, the movie is not an anthology but has interconnected stories set all over Kerala. The makers are trying to tell the world a story about how the Malayali community stood united to tackle the virus. Nipah virus took 17 lives in the state this year.

Virus is set to go on floors from December and it has been planned as a Vishu release, next April.

Dileep’s next with B Unnikrishnan starts rolling!

Dileep, who was last seen in Kammara Sambhavam, has started shooting for his next. B Unnikrishnan is directing his new movie which has the actor in the role of an advocate with a stammering problem. The movie went on floors last day in Ernakulam. Bollywood production giant Viacom 18 is making their entry to Malayalam industry by producing this movie.

This yet-to-be titled movie has Mamta Mohandas and Priya Anand as the female leads. If reports are to be believed, there is one more heroine in the movie but the casting has not yet been finalized. B Unnikrishnan himself has scripted the movie. This is his first film with Dileep and so it will be interesting to see how their rapport works.

As per reports, the makers are planning to wrap up shoot in a single schedule. They are planning to release the movie for this year’s Christmas. More details about the genre or other cast and crew members are expected to be made official shortly.

Lucifer is being made on a budget of Rs 50 crore!

Prithviraj’s directorial debut, Lucifer, starring Mohanlal is one of the most talked about movies in recent years. The very fact that two of the biggest stars of Malayalam cinema are coming together for the first time itself raises the expectations. Besides that the movie also boasts of a stellar star cast comprising of Indrajith Sukumaran, Vivek Oberoi, Tovino Thomas and Manju Warrier.

Lucifer scripted by Murali Gopy is touted to be a political thriller. Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas has said that they are investing a budget of nearly 50 crores for the movie’s making. That makes Lucifer one of the most expensive Malayalam movies in recent years. The team still has a couple of schedules left in Mumbai and Dubai.

Lucifer, according to the makers, is a political thriller with elements of a mass entertainer. Mohanlal is playing a politician’s role in the movie. Vivek Oberoi has been cast as the antagonist while details about Tovino’s and Indrajith’s characters are not yet known. There is also a buzz going around that Prithviraj is playing an extended cameo role in the movie, but it is yet to confirmed.

Lucifer’s supporting cast includes Saniya Iyappan, Kalabhavan Shajon, Sai Kumar, John Vijay, director Fazil, Sunil Sughatha, Thara Kalyan, Praveena Thomas and Mala Parvathy. In the technical crew, Sujith Vaassudev cranks the camera and Deepak Dev handles the music department.

I’m dropping my film, Aashiq Abu can do it better than me: Jayaraj

It is not often that you see two filmmakers announcing their movies based on the same topic. Malayalam cinema recently witnessed one such scenario where Priyadarshan and Santhosh Sivan announced their movies based on the life of Kunjali Marakkar. After a few rounds of discussions, both the parties decided to move forward with their respective projects.

On similar lines, directors Aashiq Abu and Jayaraj announced their movies based on the deadly Nipah virus outbreak. Though Jayaraj was the first to disclose his idea to make a movie on Nipah outbreak, Aashiq Abu’s recent announcement has made heads turn thanks to its star studded cast and crew. Jayaraj’s movie was titled as ‘Roudram’ and it was supposed to his next in the Navarasa series. But following the announcement of Aashiq Abu’s film, Jayaraj has now decided to drop his idea.

In a recent interview, Jayaraj said that his movie is in the early stages with script works still progressing. On learning that the other camp had started the script and other works much earlier, Jayaraj decided to pull out. He stressed that he didn’t want to be involved in any sort of competition within the industry and wished luck for Aashiq Abu and team. The multiple national award winner also added that he respects Aashiq’s works and feels that the youngster could do much better than him.

Gautham Menon’s Enai Nokki Paayum Thotta (ENPT) has been in the making for nearly two years now. Shoot for the movie has finally been wrapped up. The director took to his social media handle to share photos from the last day of shoot and along with that he has also written a brief note which reads,

Enai Nokki Paayum Thotta is eyeing a Diwali release. The pending post-production works are expected to be completed soon to ensure a smooth release in November. The movie will be clashing with Vijay’s Sakar at the box office. Earlier, Suriya’s film NGK was also scheduled for Pongal but it recently got postponed.

ENPT is a romantic-thriller that has Dhanush and Megha Akash in the lead roles. Actor-director Sasikumar is playing a brief but crucial role in the movie as Dhanush’s brother. The movie also has ‘Baahubali’ star Rana Daggubatti and Sunaina in cameo roles. ENPT is highly expected by the audience courtesy the hype created by its chartbuster songs. Darbuka Siva of ‘Kidaari’ fame is handling the music department. A couple of tracks from the movie – Maruvarthai and Visiri – have turned out to be sensational hits. Gautham Menon himself is producing the movie in association with Escape Artists Motion Pictures.

Sunny Wayne to make his Tamil debut with National award winner Raju Murugan’s next

Of late, Sunny Wayne has been quite choosy with his films. He has a couple of exciting films coming up for release – Kayamkulam Kochunni and Oru Kuttanadan Blog (OKB). While he plays a prominent role in Kochunni, he will be seen in a brief cameo role in OKB. Sunny also has French Viplavam and ‘Queen’ remake Zam Zam in his kitty. The latest we hear is that the actor is set to foray into Tamil film industry.

Sunny Wayne will be making his Tamil debut with ‘Gypsy’, directed by Raju Murugan. Tamil actor Jiiva plays the lead role in the movie, which is said to be a travel based love story. Details about Sunny’s characters are not yet known but it is said to be a substantial one.

Raju Murugan is a much revered filmmaker in Kollywood. Both his previous films – Cuckoo and Joker won widespread acclaim. Joker went on to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil. According to him, Gypsy is a message-oriented commercial entertainer with travel and romance as the two major elements.

Antony Perumbavoor confirms the release dates of Odiyan and Lucifer

Following the disastrous floods that rocked the state of Kerala, the Malayalam film industry has also taken a severe blow. Many films that were supposed during the Onam season had to be postponed. This change in dates in turn affected the release plans of the earlier scheduled ones. The highly anticipated Mohanlal starrer Odiyan is one such movie whose release had to be pushed. Lately, there has been a lot of speculations about the new release date.

Putting an end to all loose talks, producer Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinema has announced their plans. Odiyan will hit screens on December 14 as opposed to the earlier date of October 11. Mohanlal’s Lucifer, also funded by the same banner, will release on March 28, next year. The magnum opus Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham has been scheduled for next Onam.

Odiyan is currently in the post-production phase with the VFX and CG works progressing in Mumbai. Director VA Shrikumar Menon had recently informed that they will be releasing the trailer next month. Meanwhile, Lucifer shoot is underway in Trivandrum. The movie which marks the directorial debut of Prithviraj has Mohanlal playing the role of politician. Indrajith, Vivek Oberoi, Tovino Thomas and Manju Warrier are also part of the cast.

After wrapping up the shoot of Lucifer in September, Mohanlal will next join the sets of Marakkar – Arbakadilinte Simham, which is set to go on floors from November 1. The Priyadarshan directorial has been planned to be made on a whopping budget of Rs 100 crores. The movie will have some leading stars from Indian cinema and a few foreign actors as well. Aashirvad Cinemas, Moonshot Entertainment and Confident Group are jointly producing the movie.
