Looks like it is the season of actors turning filmmakers in Malayalam cinema. From the past itself, the industry has seen many actors trying their hand in direction. Most actors these days have expressed their wish to direct a movie someday. Actors like Sidharth Bharathan, Nadirshah, Vineeth Kumar, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Dhyan Sreenivasan are all into filmmaking. More recently, Ramesh Pisharody made his directorial debut with the comedy entertainer Panchavarnathatha.

Looks like Harisree Ashokan is the latest to join the bandwagon. Our sources within the industry suggest that the veteran actor is planning to wear the director’s hat soon. Reportedly, initial discussions for his maiden flick are progressing and we can expect an official announcement very soon.

Harisree Ashokan started his career as an mimicry artist. He has since then has acted in over 100 films with almost all the superstars of the industry. Last year, his son Arjun Ashokan made his acting debut with Soubin Shahir’s Parava.

Interestingly, Harisree Ashokan played Arjun’s father in the movie as well. Arjun was last seen in a crucial role in the Asif Ali starrer B Tech.

Soubin Shahir to direct Mammootty next!

Soubin Shahir is arguably in the best phase of his career with a slew of exciting projects in his kitty. Apart from his acting assignments, Soubin, who assisted many senior filmmakers for over a decade, turned a director last year. His directorial debut, Parava, was a huge success both critically and commercially. Ever since its release, several rumours have been doing the rounds about Soubin’s next movie.

Our sources within the industry suggest that Soubin will be teaming up with none other than megastar Mammootty for his next film. A popular young star will also be part of the movie, initial works for which are currently progressing. It must be remembered that, after the release of Parava, Soubin had updated a photo with Mammootty in his Instagram handle and captioned it as ‘next’. If talks are to be believed, shoot for the movie will kick-start by the end of this year itself.

Mammootty meanwhile is busy shooting for his epic-period flick Mamankam. The movie directed by Sajeev Pillai is based on Mamankam and has the veteran star playing the lead role of a Chaaver (warrior). His next to hit screens is Abrahaminte Santhathikal, a cop-thriller, which is slated for a grand Eid release. Oru Kuttanadan Blog, directed by Sethu, is another movie coming up for Mammootty.

Khalid Rahman’s Unda, YSR biopic Yatra, an untitled political thriller with ‘Chirakodinja Kinavukal’ fame Santhosh Vishwanath, Vysakh’s Raja 2 and Kunjali Marakkar IV are some of Mammootty’s other upcoming movies.

Kayamkulam Kochunni wrapped up after 161 days of shoot

Kayamkulam Kochunni is one of the most awaited Malayalam movies of the year. The movie directed by Roshan Andrews stars Nivin Pauly as Kayamkulam Kochunni while superstar Mohanlal plays an extended cameo as Ithikkara Pakki. After 161 days of strenuous shoot in multiple schedules, shoot for the movie was finally wrapped up last day. Nivin Pauly took to his official social media handle to share the news with his followers. He has written that working in this movie was a lifetime experience.

Kayamkulam Kochunni scripted by the National award-winning duo Bobby-Sanjay is based on the life of legendary highwayman Kochunni, who was active in the 19th century in the Travancore region. The movie went on floors in October last year. It was shot in multiple schedules in Mangalore, Palakkad, Goa and more recently in Sri Lanka.

Sunny Wayne, Priya Anand, Babu Antony, Aneesh G Menon, Amit Chakalakkal and Kannada actress Ashwini are playing crucial supporting roles in the movie. Its technical team boasts of some bigwigs like Bollywood cinematographer Binod Pradhan, renowned sound designer PM Satheesh, and Firefly Creative Studio, who handled the VFX in films like Baahubali and Enthiran.

Gokulam Gopalan of Sri Gokulam Films is producing this big budget movie, which is expected to hit screens during this year’s Onam season.

Shoot for Prithviraj’s upcoming movie Nine (9) has been progressing at a brisk pace for over a month in the Himalayas. The movie directed by Jenuse Mohamed of ‘100 Days of Love’ fame is sci-fi flick, though it is yet to be confirmed by the makers. Punjabi actress Wamiqa Gabbi, who made an impressive Malayalam debut last year with ‘Godha’, is playing a crucial role in the movie.

Mamta Mohandas is the latest to join the team of 9. Prithviraj has released her character poster today through his official Facebook handle. Her character is named Annie and it is presumably a very prominent one in the movie. This is Mamta’s second outing with Prithviraj after acting alongside him in ‘Anwar’ and ‘Celluloid’. She was also supposed to play the female lead in Prithviraj’s upcoming movie ‘Ranam’ aka ‘Detroit Crossing’ but opted out citing date issues.

Prithviraj is said to be playing a scientist in 9, the story of which happens over nine days. The movie, which is supposedly a big budget one, has a solid technical crew. Abhinandan Ramanujam, well known for his works in movies like ‘Amen’ and ‘Mosayile Kuthirameenukal’ is cranking the camera and edits are handled by Shameer Muhammed. Shaan Rahman is composing the songs while ‘Da Thadiya’ fame Sekhar Menon composes the original music score.

Prithviraj’s newly launched production house Prithviraj Productions is producing this movie jointly with Sony Pictures International Productions.

The narrative explores the concept of dream interpretation.

The newly released promo song featuring Pearle Maaney is highly intriguing and has raised a lot of curiosity among the viewers. Shot in exquisite locations against the backdrop of snow, the song has an ethereal feel to it. Mangal Suvarnan has composed the track which is rendered by Dhanusha Gokul with music by Mangal Suvarnan. Pearle and Mangal Suvarnan have penned the lyrics.

Rajinikanth’s Kaala trailer takes social media by storm!

Superstar Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated gangster flick Kaala is gearing up for a grand release. The is slated to hit screens worldwide on June 7. Last day, the makers released the movie’s trailer in social medias. Within 17 hours, the trailer has fetched a whopping 2.6 million views in YouTube. It is also at the top position in the trending list. Rajinikanth’s terrific screen presence and the politics the movie discusses are the highlights of this 1.31 minute trailer.

Kaala marks the superstar’s reunion with director Pa Ranjith after Kabali. The movie is basically a gangster story based in the Mumbai underworld. It is about a guy from Tirunelveli, who runs away in his childhood to Mumbai to become a powerful don living in the slums. Rajinikanth plays this character, Kaala, who heads the Tamil community in the slums of Dharavi.

Kaala has an ensemble supporting cast which includes several noted actors from North India. Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi is playing the female lead while Multiple national award winner Nana Patekar plays the antagonist. Pankaj Tripathi, Eeshwari Rao, Anjali Patil, Sayaji Shinde, Sakshi Agarwal, Samuthirakani, Sukanya, Ramesh Thilak and Sampath Raj are also part of the supporting cast.

Kaala’s technical crew includes cinematographer Murali, editor Sreekar Prasad and Pa Ranjith’s regular composer Santhosh Narayanan. Rajinikanth’s son-in-law and actor Dhanush is producing Kaala under his banner Wunderbar Films Pvt Ltd. All three versions of the movie – Tamil, Telugu and Hindi will be releasing on the same day, June 7.

The duo’s much hyped Kammara Sambhavam could not reap expected results at the box office. The Dileep starrer was among the most anticipated films of the year. Despite that Rathish Ambat, who made his directorial debut, won praise for his skills in handling such a big film with an unique style.

Reportedly, the veteran actor has been signed to play a crucial role in Udhayanidhi Stalin’s upcoming movie.

Enoc Able, a former associate of director Atlee, is making his directorial debut with this movie. Jayaram will be playing the role of Udhayainidhi Stalin’s father in the movie which is touted to be a rom-com entertainer. Priya Bhavani Shankar and Induja of ‘Meyaadha Maan’ fame have been roped in as the female leads. More details regarding the title and when shoot kick-starts will be announced in the coming days.

Jayaram was last seen in Tamil in a cameo role in Kamal Haasan’s Uttama Villain. He also has Venkat Prabhu’s Party coming up for release this year. Director Marthandan is known for his films like Deivathinte Swantham Cleetus, Acha Din and Pavada. His next with Kunchako Boban is being produced by Vaishaka Rajan under the banner of Vaishaka Films. Shaan Rahman has been roped in to handle the music department. Shoot for the movie is scheduled to kick-start as soon as Kunchacko Boban finishes his ongoing commitments. Tovino Thomas has an impressive line up of films in his kitty. His Tamil-Malayalam bilingual movie Abiyude Katha Anuvinteyum hit screens last Friday (May 25). He still has two more films gearing up for release. Maradona and Theevandi are the two releases coming up for Tovino. If reports are to be believed, both these movies will be releasing back to back in a week’s gap.

Maradona directed by debutant Vishnu Narayan will be the first to hit screens. The movie has been slated for release on June 22. Krishnamoorthy, who has previously assisted Lijo Jose Pellissery and Dileesh Pothan, has scripted this movie. ‘Angamaly Diaries’ actors Kichu Tellus, Tito Wilson and Chemban Vinod Jose will be seen in major roles. Newbie Sharanya R Nair is playing the female lead opposite Tovino. Leona Lishoy, Niranjan, Jins Bhaskar and Nishthar Ahamed are also part of the supporting cast. Its technical crew includes cinematographer Deepak D Menon, composer Sushin Shyam and editor Saiju Sreedharan. Maradona is being produced by S Vinod Kumar under the banner of Mini Studio.

Debutant TP Fellini is directing Theevandi which has Tovino playing a chain smoker. The movie scripted by another newcomer, Vini Viswa Lal, is a political satire. Tovino plays the role of a lazy unemployed youngster named Bineesh in this movie. Samyukhtha Menon is paired opposite Tovino. A romantic song ‘Jeevamshamayi’ featuring the lead pair has become a sensational hit and thus helping in publicizing the movie among the general audience. Kailas Menon is handling the music department. August Cinema, one of the leading banners in Malayalam film industry, is funding this movie. Official announcement regarding the release date has not yet been made but buzz is that Theevandi will hit screens on June 28.
