Kuttanpillayude Sivarathri: Suraj Venjaramoodu shines in this well-made satire!

Ever since he won the National award, Suraj Venjaramoodu has been on a totally different league finding the right balance between comic and performance-oriented roles. His latest outing, Kuttanpillayude Sivarathri promsies to bring out the wonderful actor in him once again. Let’s see what the movie has to offer.

Kuttanpillayude Sivarathri starts off as a typical family drama. Plachottil Kuttanpilla is a senior police constable and his wife Shakunathala is the Sub-Inspector. The couple has three children – two daughters and a son. The core plot of is centred around the series of events that occur in Kuttan Pillai’s house when his relatives – his children, their spouses and extended family – converge at his humble home to attend the annual Shivarathri festival. The movie has some very interesting moments as it enters the second half where the mood gets a bit more serious.

Director Jean Markose, who made an impressive debut with the thriller Angels, has not disappointed the audience. He has extracted the best out of all his actors and packaged this movie as a thoroughly enjoyable film for audience of all age groups. Though the writing by Joselet Joseph goes wayward at points, it still has enough elements keeps the audience engaged.

Suraj Venjaramoodu is the life of Kuttanpillayude Sivarathri. He hardly ever smiles in the movie but his serious glares and quirky mannerisms often evoke laughter. He has completely got into the skin of the character getting the traits and annoying nature of an old-aged man perfectly. His combination scenes with ‘Uppum Mulakum’ fame Biju Sopanam, who plays his son-in-law, have come out incredibly well. Srinda, Mithun Ramesh, Kochu Preman and a host of other supporting actors are there in the movie, and all of them have justified their casting.

Fazil Nazer’s cinematography was pleasing to the eyes and showcased the visual beauty of the rural side. Shibish K Chandran is in charge of the edits. Playback singer Sayanora Philip, who debuts as a music director, has done a commendable job with both the songs and the background score. All the songs are enjoyable, especially the already famous ‘Chakku Pattu’.

Overall, Kuttanpillayude Sivarathri is a good film that boasts of some great performances, good music, fine humour and some poignant moments as well. It will be a delightful watch for the family audience.

Naam Review: An enjoyable feel-good campus flick

Naam Review: An enjoyable feel-good campus flick

Campus flicks are aplenty in Malayalam cinema and debutant Joshy Thomas Pallickal’s Naam is the latest one from this genre. But is there anything unique that makes Naam different from the run-of-the-mill campus entertainers? Let’s see.

Naam kicks off rather conventionally with the story being narrated through a flashback. We are straightaway introduced to a bunch of youngsters who come from different walks of life and hit it off at the campus. Naam does not have the usual campus politics or cheesy romance in it, which makes it out a standout from other similar films. Instead, the story focuses on friendship and how the gang stand united at a crucial moment. The plot, based on a real-life incident, does not throw any twists or turns but the director has still managed to keep the audience hooked with some interesting moments. Altogether, the whole movie is packaged in around 135 minutes which makes it a pleasant laid-back watch.

Naam stars Shabareesh Varma, Rahul Madhav, Aditi Ravi, Tony Luke, Noby Markose, Niranj Suresh, Sonu Sebastian, Noby, Ajay Mathew and Mareena Michael in major roles. All the actors get equal screen time and they all manage to make a mark. Their camaraderie off-screen has clearly reflected on their performances. The supporting cast includes Saiju Kurup, Renji Panicker, Ponnamma Babu, Nandu, Kottayam Pradeep and Dinesh Pranbhakar.

The movie caught audience attention even before its release thanks to the cameo roles by director Gautham Vasudev Menon, Tovino Thomas and Vineeth Sreenivasan. All three of them appear as themselves with Tovino doing an extended cameo of sorts.

Technically, cinematography was fine with the colourful visuals capturing the vibes of a campus life. The movie is kind of a musical with around eight different songs with the peppy ‘Tanka Takkara’ being the most enjoyable one.

Overall, Joshy Thomas Pallickal has delivered a delightful film with some fun moments that takes us back to our college memories. Unlike other campus movies, Naam can be enjoyed with families for the message it conveys is earnest and relevant.

From hearing the idea to performing every scene. Language no bar it’s been some of the most memorable dialogues I’ve ever got to speak and some of the best scenes I got to enact in any film. Thank you team #Mahanati for the opportunity. The amount of research and effort and work gone into the film is beyond anything I’ve seen. The success is completely deserved. I hope it grows to new heights with each new day.

Nagi. Entirely your baby. From idea to fruition. You’ve carried and loved and nursed and delivered and how ! And just your second film. The level of Maturity you’ve shown is beyond comparison. Your temperament your writing your ideas and vision. Cannot wait to see more of your films.

Swapna Priyanka and Ashwini Dutt garu. The most amazing producers. You all give more love and respect than the world deserves. Hope I’ve been able to reciprocate with my work.

Keerthy there is nothing I can say that people havnt already told you. But from start to finish it’s your film and you’ve lived every moment as Savitri Garu and made the viewers laugh and cry, fall in love and broken their hearts along with you.

Sam you were extremely endearing as Madhuravani and huge respect for choosing to play this role. And both of you along with the 18 plus women in our crew are the real stars of #Mahanati ! For women all over India this film stands strong !
