Naam is not a typical college story about politics or romance: Director Joshy Thomas Pallickal

Malayalam cinema has seen a plenty of campus flicks, some of them enjoy cult status among the audience. Romance, politics and thriller elements are three major tropes mostly used in Malayalam campus flicks. But debutant Joshy Thomas Pallickal’s upcoming movie Naam, which is also a campus film, promises to offer a different experience.

Naam, according to the director, is unlike other campus stories which are mostly centred around politics and romance. The director himself has penned the story for the movie based on his real life experiences. It is basically the story of nine friends who are there for each other regardless of their backgrounds, religion, region etc. Recently, the censor board officials had watched the movie and appreciated the makers for the goodness element in it. The movie sends out a good message to the viewers about friendship and its value.

Naam stars Sabareesh Varma, Rahul Madhav, Aditi Ravi, Tony Luke, Noby Markose, Niranj Suresh, Sonu Sebastian, Ajay Mathew and Mareena Michael in major roles. Director Gautham Vasudev Menon, Tovino Thomas and Vineeth Sreenivasan appear in cameo roles. Around 140 newcomers are also part of the movie’s supporting cast.

Shabareesh Varma, apart from playing one of the leads, has also penned eight songs in the movie. The songs and trailer have already got good response from social media users. Director Joshy Thomas Pallickal himself is producing this movie under his banner JTP Films. The movie is all set to hit screens on May 11, Friday.

Shamshera: Ranbir Kapoor joins hands with Yash Raj Films for an action-adventure film

Bollywood’s leading production house, Yash Raj Films announced their new project with Ranbir Kapoor via their Twitter handle. The movie titled as Shamshera is an action-adventure film and it has Ranbir playing the role of a dacoit. Karan Malhotra, who made the superhit Hrithik Roshan starrer Agneepath will be directing Shamshera. The makers released a 45 second long motion poster video, which features Ranbir with a scarred face holding a battle axe in one hand and arrows in another.

Ranbir Kapoor, who is mostly known for his lover boy roles, will be appearing in a never-before-seen action avatar in Shamshera. The movie is set to go on the floors by the end of this year and shooting will be wrapped up by mid-2019. Ranbir is currently awaiting the release of Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic on Sanjay Dutt titled Sanju. The movie is eagerly anticipated by cinephiles across the country thanks to its highly impressive promos.

Besides that, Ranbir also has Brahmastra in the pipeline in which he will be sharing screen space with Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan and Mouni Roy. Ayan Mukherjee will be directing this movie, which is being planned as a trilogy. Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is backing this ambitious project.

As we had reported earlier, superstar Rajinikanth’s Kaala will hit screens worldwide on June 7. The movie was initially slated for an April 27 release, but the two-month long TFPC strike meant that movies scheduled for summer releases had to be pushed further. As the release date is nearing, Kaala’s promotions have kick-started. The movie’s audio launch has been scheduled to be held on May 9 at YMCA Grounds, Chennai.

The makers released a preview of the audio album on Monday in social medias. This 17 minute long video has director Pa Ranjith and composer Santhosh Narayanan briefing about each track and the thought process behind it. The album has a total of 9 tracks namely ‘Kattravai Pattravai’, ‘Poraduvom’, ‘Nikkal Nikkal’, ‘Theruvilakku’, ‘Thanga Sela’, ‘Semma Weightu’, ‘Kannamma’, ‘Kamnamma – Acapella’, ‘Urimayayi Meetpom’.

Kaala marks Rajinikanth’s reunion with Pa Ranjith and Santhosh Narayanan after Kabali. Kaala is basically a commercial gangster flick based in the Mumbai underworld. It is about a guy from Tirunelveli, who runs away in his childhood to Mumbai to become a powerful don living in the slums. Rajinikanth plays this character, Kaala, who heads the Tamil community in the slums of Dharavi.

Kaala has an ensemble supporting cast which includes several noted actors from North India. Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi is playing the female lead, but she is not paired opposite Rajinikanth. Multiple national award winner Nana Patekar is playing the powerful antagonist’s role. Pankaj Tripathi, Eeshwari Rao, Anjali Patil, Sayaji Shinde, Sakshi Agarwal, Samuthirakani, Sukanya, Ramesh Thilak and Sampath Raj are part of the supporting cast.

Rajinikanth’s son-in-law and actor Dhanush is producing Kaala under his banner Wunderbar Films Pvt Ltd.

The highly anticipated biopic of actress Savitri, Mahanati, is all set to hit screens on May 9. The Tamil (Nadigayar Thilagam) and Malayalam (Mahanadi) versions of the movie will be releasing two days later on May 11. Nag Ashwin is directing this movie which had Keerthy Suresh playing the role of Savitri.

Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan, who is making his Telugu debut, is playing late actor Gemini Ganesan in the movie. Vijay Deverakonda, Naga Chaitanya, Samantha, Prakash Rajendra Prasad, Mohan Babu and Shalini Pandey are also part of the movie’s massive star cast.

Mahanati is expected to have a good opening in Kerala thanks to Dulquer Salmaan. His presence guarantees a fair run for the movie in the state. The actor has not had a release for nearly seven months now and naturally his fans are eagerly waiting for Mahanati.

Mahanati traces Savitri’s life from the 1940s to 1980s and features those films she acted with NT Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageshwara Rao and other legends from the Telugu and Tamil film industry. Though the movie mostly revolves around Savitri’s life, Dulquer as Gemini Ganesan is one of the principal characters in the movie. Savitri was briefly married to Gemini Ganesan and the movie will also show some lesser known details about their relationship.

Pothu: Lijo Jose Pellissery clarifies about rumored movie with Nivin Pauly and Antony Varghese

Lijo Jose Pellissery is one of the most revered filmmakers in Malayalam cinema at present. Recently, social medias were abuzz about the director planning a movie named Pothu with young stars Nivin Pauly and Antony Varghese as the leads. The news was celebrated widely by fans and cinephiles but the director has now come out dismissing these reports as completely baseless.

Lijo Jose Pellissery is currently basking in the glory of his latest release Ee Maa Yau. The movie which hit screens on May 4 has been rated by many as his finest work till date. National award winner PF Mathews has scripted the movie based on the lives of people who live in the coastal area. The narrative is primarily centred around a death and subsequent events that happen during a funeral. Vinayakan, Chemban Vinod Jose and Dileesh Pothan play the lead roles in the movie.

Ee Maa Yau, which is actually the acronym of Eesho Maryam Ouseph, won a total of three awards at the State level last year. While Lijo Jose Pellissery bagged the award for best director, Poly Valsan was honoured with the best supporting actress award and Renganaath Ravee as the best sound designer. Amidst the critical acclaim, the movie is also doing good business at the box office.

It is already known that Mammootty is playing the lead in former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YSR’s biopic ‘Yatra’. Mahi Raghav, who has made hit movies like Paathshala and Anando Brahma is directing this movie. While Mammootty has been confirmed for YSR’s role, the makers have still not announced details regarding the supporting actors.

For the past few weeks, there has been a buzz going around in social medias about Tamil star Suriya playing a crucial role in the movie. As it turns out, the news is indeed true as Suriya confirmed it last day during the Amma Mazhavillu Show.
Reports suggest that Suriya is being considered for the role of YSR’s son, YS Jaganmohan Reddy, who is the opposition leader in AP assembly currently. Suriya and Mammootty have not acted together previously and so fans are highly excited to see the two actors together on screen. An official announcement regarding Suriya’s casting is yet to be made by the makers.

YS Rajasekhara Reddy, popularly known as YSR, is one of the most iconic politicians that Andhra Pradesh has ever seen. According to the makers, Yatra is an event-based film which primarily focuses on the time during YSR’s three-month-long padayatra in 2003. The padayatra was a defining moment in his career which transformed him into a people’s leader.

YSR died in an air crash in 2009 after the helicopter carrying him crashed in a dense forest. He was so popular that hundreds of his followers committed suicide upon hearing his death. This upcoming biopic will showcase some of the important aspects of his life and his political journey. Yatra is being produced jointly by Vijay Chilla and Shashi Devi under the banner of 70mm Entertainments.

Tovino Thomas’ Tamil-Malayalam bilingual movie Abi and Anu (Abiyude Katha Anuvinteyum in Malayalam) is finally getting ready to hit screens later this month. The movie which has seen multiple postponing is finally set for release on May 25. noted woman cinematographer BR Vijayalakshmi is making her directorial debut with this movie.

Tovino and Pia Bajapi play the lead roles in the movie touted to be an intense romantic tale. Udayabanu Maheshwaran has scripted this movie based on some real life incidents that occurred in Latin America. Veteran actors Prabhu, Suhasini Mani Ratnam and Rohini are playing prominent roles in the movie. Songs and promo videos had garnered good response from viewers in social medias.

The movie’s technical crew includes cinematographer Agilan and music director Dharan. Vikram Mehra and BR Vijayalakshmi are jointly funding this movie under the banner of Yoodlee Films. Ace cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Santhosh Sivan is serving as an executive producer.

Major Ravi’s next titled Wagah Border?

Major Ravi, who is well known for his army based movies has reportedly started works on his new film. If reports are to be believed, the movie has been titled and Wagah Border. From the title, we presume that his new movie is also about patriotism and Indo-Pak relationship. Other details regarding its cast and crew are not yet known.

Earlier, there were reports about Major Ravi planning to do a movie with young star Nivin Pauly. In an interview, the director had said it is a romantic movie inspired from real life incidents. Popular cinematographer Jomon T John is said to be venturing into production with this movie. However, there has been no further developments regarding this project.

Major Ravi’s last release was 1971 Beyond Borders, based on the 1971 Indo-Pak. The movie starring Mohanlal in a dual role was the fourth in the Major Mahadevan series. During it’s theatrical run, the movie failed to create any sort of impact and ended up as a big failure at the box office. The director will be hoping to get back to winning ways with his upcoming movie.

Sunny Wayne starrer French Viplavam is gearing up for release. The movie directed by debutant Maju is tipped to be a fun entertainer with a period backdrop, set in the 90s. Anwar Ali, Shajeer Sha and Shajeer Jaleel have jointly scripted this movie. Last day, the makers released a new poster featuring Sunny Wayne and the female lead, Arya Salim.

French Viplavam has Sunny Wayne playing the role of a chef. His character names Sathyan is a lazy guy working in a village resort who likes to hang around with his friends all the time. Since the time period is different, the actor sports a new look in the movie. His costumes and looks have all been designed accordingly. The movie promises to explore a different dimension of Sunny Wayne, the actor.

Chemban Vinod Jose and veteran actor Lal are said to be essaying other major roles in the movie. The three actors are coming together for the first time, so it will be interesting to see their on-screen chemistry. Sasi Kallinga, Vishnu, Lukman Lukku, Noby, Merin Jose Pottackal, Unnimaya Prasad and Krishna are also part of the movie’s supporting cast.

Pappinu has cranked the camera in French Viplavam while Deepu Joseph is handling the edits. Prashanth Pillai is composing music for the movie. French Viplavam is being produced by Shajeer Jaleel and Jafar Khan under the banner of Abba Creations.
