Suriya’s next with ‘Irudhi Suttru’ fame Sudha Kongara is a period film?

We had earlier reported about Suriya teaming up with Sudha Kongara of ‘Irudhi Suttru’ fame. This movie, tentatively titled Suriya 38, is reportedly shaping up as a period flick. Composer-turned-actor GV Prakash, who has been signed as the music director for this movie, was the first to hint about it.

In a recent interview, GVP said that Suriya 38 will be one of the most important films in Indian cinema and will be on lines to something like Aayirathil Oruvan, music for which was also composed by him. The actor’s are highly excited with this news.

Sudha Kongara, a former associate of Mani Ratnam, shot to fame with her movie Irudhi Suttru, which was released in 2016. The movie starring Madhavan and Ritika Singh was a bilingual made in Tamil and Hindi (Saala Khadoos). Sudha also remade the movie in Telugu as Guru with Venkatesh reprising Madhavan’s role. All three versions were critically and commercially successful.

Sudha has already proven her mettle as a filmmaker and naturally expectations are high for her movie with Suriya. She has been working on this project for sometime now. More details regarding its genre and other cast and crew members are expected to be announced later. Suriya’s own banner 2D Entertainment is funding this movie.

Suriya meanwhile is busy working on NGK, which is nearing completion. He will be then joining the sets of KV Anand’s movie which is being funded by Lyca Productions. His movie with Sudha Kongara will start rolling next year after he wraps up his prior commitments.

It is already known that Vikram will be playing the mythological character Karna in the upcoming biggie ‘Mahavir Karna’, to be directed by RS Vimal. Pre-production works for the movie is currently going on in full swing. It is slated go on floors this coming October in Hyderabad and is expected to hit screens by December next year.

Vikram, who is well known for the hardwork and efforts he puts in to get into the skin of a character, has reportedly started working out for Karna. He is someone who has undergone multiple physical transformations through the course of his two decade long career. Now, he is getting ready for yet another strenuous transformation for playing the role of Karna.

Unlike his earlier films, Vikram will be sporting a bulky physique in this movie. Vikram has allotted four months for shoot and three months for his preparations. The actor had recently posted a few photos from his workout sessions in his official Instagram handle.

Mahavir Karna will be shot simultaneously in Hindi and will be dubbed in all other major Indian languages. It is a mega project planned to be made on an estimated budget of Rs 300 crores. Several leading stars and technicians from India and abroad will be associated with this movie. A New York based production house United Film Kingdom is backing this mega project.

The much talked about Mohanlal starrer Lucifer is slated to go on floors from July this year. Actor Prithviraj is making his directorial debut with this movie scripted by Murali Gopy. Antony Perumbavoor is producing the movie under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas.

Latest buzz is that Manju Warrier has been signed as the female lead for the movie. The makers are yet to give an official word regarding this. If it turns out to be true, this will be Manju’s seventh outing with the superstar and fourth after she made her comeback in 2014 with How Old Are You. The two have produced sparkling performances in films like Aaraam Thampuran, Kanmadam, Villain etc.

Lucifer is a hugely hyped project, wait for which started two years back when Mohanlal made a surprise announcement that he will playing the lead in Prithviraj’s directorial debut, to be scripted by Murali Gopy. Ever since then, fans as well as the common audience have been eager to hear updates about the movie but the makers have remained tight-lipped all this while.

Not much is known about the movie; the makers have maintained utmost secrecy regarding the proceedings, so much so that even the genre is unknown. According to the makers, it will be a mass entertainer pertaining to audience of all age groups. Script works have already been completed and pre-production works are currently progressing.

Prithviraj has hinted that Lucifer, like all Murali Gopy scripts, will be an intense film that demands strong performances from the actors. Speculations are rife that a promising young actor will be essaying a major role alongside Mohanlal in Lucifer. Names like Indrajith, Tovino Thomas and Shane Nigam are doing the rounds, but the makers are yet to announce the cast and crew.

Prithviraj is currently shooting in Himalayas for his sci-fi movie 9, which also marks his maiden production venture. Mohanlal on the other hand has wrapped up Odiyan and will soon be flying to England for the shoot of Ranjith’s Bilathikadha. The actor has allotted around 45 days for the movie after which he will be joining the sets of Lucifer.

Reportedly, Lucifer’s shoot will be commencing on July 10 in Kochi. Trivandrum and Mumbai are said to be the other major locations.

Rajamouli’s movie with Jr NTR and Ram Charan is said to be based on the 1980s Olympics. A whopping budget of around Rs 300 crores is being invested for this movie. Unlike Rajamouli’s Baahubali series, which was a VFX heavy film, this upcoming one is speculated to have a sports backdrop, wrestling to be precise. This yet-to-be titled movie is being produced by DVV Danayya under the banner of DVV Entertainments.

Ram Charan and Jr NTR had recently travelled to Los Angeles as part of their preparations for this upcoming movie. Rajamouli’s son SS Karthikeya also accompanied the actors in their trip. Reportedly, some famous technicians from Hollywood had conducted the look tests for both NTR and Ram Charan.

An official announcement of the title and details regarding the genre, and full cast and crew is expected to be made very soon.

It is already known that Malayali actor Tovino Thomas is playing the villain in Dhanush’s Maari 2. The movie directed by Balaji Mohan is the sequel of Dhanush’s 2015 film Maari. Tovino has already shot for a day with the Maari 2 team. The Guppy actor feels he is very fortunate to share screen space with such a big star like Dhanush.

In a recent interview, Tovino was all praise for Dhanush who became an big star at a very young age and even won the National award at the age of 26. Tovino sounded excited about playing the villain opposite Dhanush. Although he has played negative roles in films like ABCD and Style, this will be his first such role after establishing himself as a bankable actor. Unlike his other outings as villains, his role in Maari 2 is said to be a very strong one with a properly fledged character. He will be appearing in two different looks in the movie.

Tovino’s casting came as a big surprise but director Balaji Mohan had clear plans while roping him in. Even though the first part, Maari was not a big hit, it had a wide reach. So the director collected feedback on what went wrong in the movie. While scripting, he took all that into consideration, and first designed the antagonist. The script was later developed from him. As it shaped up, the role demanded an intense actor and that’s how they signed Tovino Thomas. It will be really interesting to see the face-off between Dhanush and Tovino.

Tovino meanwhile is waiting the release of Theevandi, directed by TP Fellini. Maradona, Oru Kuprasidha Payyan and Luca are his other films coming up this year.

Jayasurya’s Njan Marykutty is an eagerly awaited movie courtesy the curiosity it invoked after it was revealed that Jayasurya is playing the role of a woman. Ranjith Sankar is directing this movie which marks his fifth outing with Jayasurya after Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam, Pretham and the Punyalan franchise.

Njan Marykutty’s shoot has been wrapped up and the makers have now announced that the movie will be hitting screens on June 15 as an Eid release. The movie has Jayasurya playing Marykutty, a man who is a woman in mind and body, who has gone through a sex change surgery. The actor assured that the movie will not hurt the trans community but will instead be a gift for them.

Jayasurya, well known for his extraordinary acting skills, is expected to have come up with a fine performance in this movie. Jewel Mary, Innocent, Joju George, Aju Varghese and Suraj Venjaramoodu are also part of the movie’s cast.

Like the actor-director duo’s previous outings, Njan Marykutty is also being funded by Dreams n Beyond and released by their own Punyalan Cinemas Release.

Shoot for Nivin Pauly’s Moothon resumes in Lakshwadeep

Its been a while since we heard about Moothon, the Nivin Pauly starrer directed by actress-turned-filmmaker Geetu Mohandas. The movie went on floors in May last year. The team had brief schedule in Mumbai then, after which Nivin got himself busy with his other projects. After a long break, Moothon’s shoot has finally been resumed. The team is currently shooting in Lakshwadeep, one of the movie’s major locations.

Moothon is the story of a man called Mullakoya from Lakshadweep. The movie is centred around his journey to find his brother. ‘Moothon’ is actually an island slang for elder brother. The story of Moothon penned by Geetu Mohandas had won the global filmmaking award in Sundance film festival 2016.

Nivin Pauly’s character in the movie is said to be one of his most challenging roles till date. He is sporting a different look for the movie with a closely cropped hair. In the first look poster, Nivin can be seen in a rough avatar with a shaven head and a pierced nose. Dileesh Pothan and the two boys from Parava – Govind V Pai and Amal Shah are also part of this ongoing schedule.

Moothon, which marks the directorial debut of Geetu Mohandas in Malayalam, has some of the country’s leading technicians associated with it. Geetu’s husband and renowned cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Rajeev Ravi is cranking the camera. Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is making his entry to Mollywood by collaborating with Geetu Mohandas in writing the Hindi dialogues. Thaikkudam Bridge fame Govind Menon is handling the music department.

Moothon is funded jointly by Bollywood filmmaker Anand L Rai’s production house Colour Yellow Productions and Jar Pictures. Eros International will be presenting the movie.

Mammootty’s Tamil movie Peranbu is keenly awaited by movie lovers of both the states. The movie directed by Ram raised a lot of curiosity after it swept awards at several film festivals. If reports are to be believed, the long wait is coming to an end as Peranbu is slated for an Eid release in June. An official word is yet to be made but fans are hoping that it turns out to be true.

Peranbu is an intense emotional family drama in which Mammootty plays the role of a caring father. He plays Amudhan, a middle-class father working as a taxi driver abroad. As per reports, the veteran actor has given an extraordinary performance in the movie which has the potential to win top honors at all the major awards this year.

Peranbu won international recognition at the recently held Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR). The movie secured the 20th position amongst the 187 films considered for the audience award category at the festival. It was also nominated for the NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) award. Critics who watched the movie at the festival also gave unanimously positive reviews.

Peranbu also has Anjali, Sarath Kumar, Baby Sadhana, transgender artist Anjali Ameer, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Kaniha and Samuthirakani playing significant roles. The movie is being produced by PL Thennappan under the banner of Sri Rajalakshmi Films.

Aravindante Athidhikal directed by M Mohanan tells an endearing story of an orphan and his wait for his long lost mother. Rajesh Raghavan has scripted this movie which is set the premises of the famous Mookambika Temple in Kollur. Vineeth Sreenivasan plays Aravindan, an orphan raised by Madhavan (Sreenivasan), who owns a lodge – Mookambika Vilasam.

Nikhila Vimal of ‘Love 24×7’ fame is paired opposite Vineeth in the movie. Urvashi, Shanthi Krishna, Prem Kumar, KPAC Lalitha, Vijayaraghavan, Aju Varghese, Biju Kuttan, Kottayam Nazeer and Baiju form a solid supporting cast. The movie is jointly produced by Pradeep Kumar Pathiyara of Pathiyara Entertainment Pvt Ltd and Noble Babu Thomas of Big Bang Entertainments.

Pranav Mohanlal in Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham?

Mohanlal’s Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham, which was announced only last week, is already among the most anticipated Malayalam movies of next year. Priyadarshan is directing this movie which is based on the life of Kunjali Marakkar IV. Aashirvad Cinemas, Confident Group and Moonshot Entertainment are jointly funding this big budget project.

During the launch event, the makers had informed that the movie will have many popular actors from across the country as well as from abroad. Suneil Shetty, Vikram and Nagarjuna are some of the names that are doing the rounds. Latest talks within the industry suggest that Mohanlal’s son Pranav will be appearing in a guest role in the movie. The authenticity of this news is yet to be confirmed but it will be huge if Pranav and Mohanlal come together for this movie.

Priyadarshan is scripting Marakkar jointly with Ani Sasi, the younger son of legendary filmmaker IV Sasi. Casting and other pre-production works are currently progressing. On the technical front, the director wanted the same set of technicians he worked with in the 199 historical period-drama Kalapani.

Sabu Cyril has been retained as the production designer. Santhosh Sivan was approached for wielding the camera, but since he was busy with other commitments they have got the National award winning Tirru on board. Priyadarshan has worked with Tirru in movies like Garam Masala, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Kanchivaram, Tezz, Geethanjali etc. Some other renowned technicians are expected to be associated with this ambitious project.

The makers have planned to start shooting on Kerala Piravi Day (November 1). Stay tuned to this space for more updates.
