Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham is a dream come true project: Mohanlal

Last day, the announcement of Mohanlal-Priyadarshan team’s movie based on Kunjali Marakkar’s life was made in an event held in Kochi. The movie titled as Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham is being planned on a huge canvas with a whopping budget of around Rs 100 crores. Mohanlal’s Aashirvad Cinemas will be funding the movie jointly with Dr Roy CJ’s Confident Group and Santhosh T Kuruvilla’s Moonshot Entertainment.

During the interaction with media persons gathered for the launch event, Mohanlal said Marakkar was a dream come true project. Priyadarshan and Mohanlal had been planning this movie for years now. The idea to make a movie on Kunjali Marakkar was first sowed by legendary scriptwriter T Damodaran. But they had to shelve the idea then due to the huge cost involved in production and the limitations of Malayalam film industry.

But now, the success of movies like Pulimurugan and the rising popularity of Malayalam movies outside the state has inspired the makers to go ahead with this ambitious project. Some of the leading technicians from India and abroad are expected to be associated with this project. Along with Mohanlal, top stars from other Indian film industries will be playing major roles in the movie. Besides them, British and Chinese actors will also be part of the movie.

Kunjali Marakkar was the title given to the naval chief in the 16th century, to protect the coast against the invading Portuguese army. There were four key Kunjali Marakkars during that era and Mohanlal will be seen playing one of them. According to Priyadarshan, the movie will be a semi-fictious one with bits of history and imagination.

As of now, the makers have planned to start shooting on Kerala Piravi Day (November 1), which will extend up to three months. Majority of the portions happen in the sea, so VFX works will consume a lot of time. Priyadarshan said that they will get an idea about the release date only after they enter the post-production phase. The movie will be dubbed in all major Indian languages and other foreign languages like Chinese and Arabic.

Mammootty and Sreenivasan team up for a political thriller

As we had reported earlier, Bobby-Sanjay duo is scripting a political thriller for Mammootty. The movie which is to directed by ‘Chirakodinja Kinavukal’ fame Santhosh Vishwanath has the megastar playing the role of Kerala Chief Minister. Veteran actor Sreenivasan is the latest addition to the movie’s cast.

Sreenivasan, who is well known for scripting political satires and his roles as political activists, will be playing an entirely different role in this upcoming movie. He will be seen as a politically ignorant guy, who is least bothered about the political scenario in the State.

‘Kattapanayile Rithwik Roshan’ fame Vishnu Unnikrishnan will also be seen in a crucial role in the movie. Apparently, the movie is about how a CM should be in today’s Kerala. It will showcase the discussions between a common youth and the State’s CM. Vishnu will be seen playing the former’s role in the movie. Renji Panicker has also been cast in a prominent role as Mammootty’s friend.

Bobby and Sanjay are among the finest writers in the industry at present; so the audience are expecting nothing but a quality film from them. Eventhough Santhosh Viswanath’s debut directorial, Chirakodinja Kinavukal, flopped at the box office, critics praised him for his daring attempt to make what is Malayalam cinema’s first ever spoof film.

The movie’s official announcement with details regarding the title and full cast and crew is expected to be made very soon. The makers are planning to go on floors by the end of this year, once Mammootty wraps up all his ongoing commitments.

Nagarjuna and Suniel Shetty in Mohanlal’s Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham

Last week, director Priyadarshan officially announced his movie based on Kunjali Marakkar’s life with superstar Mohanlal. The movie titled as Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham is being planned on a huge canvas with a whopping budget of around Rs 100 crores. Aashirvad Cinemas will be funding the movie jointly with Dr Roy CJ’s Confident Group and Santhosh T Kuruvilla’s Moonshot Entertainment.

The makers have planned to start shooting on Kerala Piravi Day (November 1). Casting and other pre-production works are currently progressing. If reports are to be believed, Telugu superstar Nagarjuna and Bollywood star Suniel Shetty have been approached to play crucial roles in the movie. Priyadarshan has worked with both the actors and shares great rapport with them, so the possibility of them being roped in for Marakkar – Arabikadalinte Simham are high. We still wait for an official confirmation.

On the technical front, Priyadarshan had wanted the same set of technicians he worked with in the 1996 historical period-drama Kalapani. The director has worked with Tirru in movies like Garam Masala, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Kanchivaram, Tezz, Geethanjali etc.

Priyadarshan is scripting Marakkar jointly with Ani Sasi, the younger son of legendary filmmaker IV Sasi. Sabu Cyril is the production designer. Some other leading technicians from India and abroad are expected to be associated with this project. Stay tuned to this space for more updates.

Aravind Swami in Mammootty’s Mamankam?

Mammootty starrer Mamankam is one of the most anticipated movies coming up in Malayalam cinema. The movie directed by debutant Sajeev Pillai is an epic historic-drama made on a massive scale. After completing the first schedule in February, the team has been on a break for over two months. The next leg of shoot is all set to kick-start from May 10 in Kochi. All this while the makers have kept utmost secrecy about the cast but they had informed that many popular actors from other industries will be part of the movie.

Latest buzz is that Tamil actor Arvind Swami has been approached to play a crucial role in Mamankam. There is still no confirmation about this but it will be huge if the makers can rope in a big star like Arvind Swami. It is worth a mention that Mammootty and Arvind Swami had previously worked together in Mani Ratnam’s all-time classic Thalapathi.

Arvind Swami is currently busy shooting for Mani Ratnam’s Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. The Roja actor’s next release is Bhaskar Oru Rascal, which interestingly is the official remake of Mammootty’s Bhaskar The Rascal.

Sajeev Pillai, who is a former associate of Adoor Gopalakrishnan, has scripted Mamankam after doing research works for nearly 12 years. The movie is based on the medieval fair, Mamankam, where brave warriors from across the country would come together to showcase their skills at combat. Mammootty plays a ‘Chaaver’ (warrior) in this movie, which revolves around the life of these warriors who plot to defeat the Zamorin rulers.

Reportedly, Bollywood actress Prachi Desai has been signed as the female lead in Mamankam. Prachi is noted for her roles in movies like Rock On, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, I, Me Aur Main and Azhar. Apart from her, two other noted actresses will be part of the movie’s cast.

Mamankam’s technical crew includes cinematographer Ganesh Rajavelu a.k.a Jim Ganesh, action choreographer Kaecha, composer M Jayachandran and VFX supervisor Kamala Kannan, who has worked in several big projects in South Indian cinema. Venu Kunnampilly of Kavya Films is funding this big budget movie.

Aravindante Athidhikal: A pleasant feel-good entertainer

Aravindante Athidhikal: A pleasant feel-good entertainer

Vineeth Sreenivasan’s latest outing as a lead actor, Aravindante Athidhikal looked highly promising from the songs and promo videos. With an ensemble cast comprising of Urvashi, Sreenivasan, KPAC Lalitha, Shanthi Krishna, Sreejaya, Prem Kumar and many others, the movie has a set of proven actors. Let’s see how Aravindante Athidhikal actually turned out to be.

Rajesh Raghavan has woven a simple feel-good tale set in the premises of Mookamika temple in Kollur. It is a milieu that has not been shown much in Malayalam cinema and that itself gives the movie a lot of freshness. Our protagonist Aravindan is an orphan who is raised by Madhavan (Sreenivasan), the owner of Mookambika Vilasom lodge. The movie explores Aravindan’s relationship with his guests and his wait for his long lost mother.

M Mohanan, who has made hit films like Katha Parayumbol and Manikyakallu, has directed Aravindante Athidhikal. Coming from the old-school style of filmmaking, his narrative pattern is very simple and takes its sweet time to unfold. The director has emerged successful in maintaining the feel-good element throughout its run-time courtesy some fine natural humour and subtle emotions.

Vineeth Sreenivasan has delivered one of his career best performances in this movie. The do-gooder guy-next-door image suits him perfectly and he carries the role without any fuss. Urvashi is arguably the standout performer in the movie. The veteran is at her finest best with her terrific comic timing which instantly reminds us of her yesteryear classics. Nikhila Vimal, who is making her comeback to Malayalam cinema, looked gorgeous on-screen and it reflected on her performance as well. Aju Varghese, Biju Kuttan and Prem Kumar take care of the comedy department. Another notable thing about the movie is there is no seperate comedy-track just for the sake of it. Barring the whole sequence where the tap breaks, humour is finely laced around the narrative. Senior actors like Sreenivasan, Shanthi Krishna, KPAC Lalitha and Vijayaraghavan, like always, did their parts well.

Shaan Rahman’s music is the backbone of this movie. Songs are already chartbusters and his background score at some portions convey the emotions perfectly without the need of any dialogues. DOP Swaroop Philip has captured the vibes and sanctity of the temple city.

Overall, Aravindante Athidhikal is definitely a good watch for the families this holiday season. A smile is guaranteed when you leave the cinema halls.

Poomaram fame Neeta Pillai signed for Abrid Shine’s next

Director Abrid Shine with his recent film Poomaram introduced a bunch of talented young actors to the industry. One of the most impressive among them was Neeta Pillai who played the role of Irene, the dynamic chairperson of St Treesa’s college. The pretty actress, who won a lot of appreciation from critics and commoners for her effortless performance, has now bagged her next.

In a recent interview, Neeta revealed that she has signed for next, which is also with director Abrid Shine. Pre-production and scripting works for this upcoming movie are currently progressing. They have planned to start shooting from next month. Neeta, in the interview, said that she is not in a position to reveal anything more about the film but added that she feels extremely happy to be a part of it.

The three-film-old Abrid Shine is a much revered filmmaker among the Malayali cinephiles. All his three movies – 1983, Action Hero Biju and Poomaram – discussed entirely different themes and had an unique style of their own. While the Nivin Pauly starrer 1983 was a coming-of-age that revolved around the game of cricket, his next Action Hero Biju, also starring Nivin Pauly, followed the everyday life of a righteous police officer. His last outing Poomaram chronicles the events that occur during a college youth festival.
