For the last few weeks there have been a lot of buzz about famous pornstar Mia Khalifa making her movie entry with the sequel of this year’s superhit Malayalam film Chunkzz. Director Omar Lulu was the one who broke the news through his social media handle. The movie is backed by a Mumbai based production company and it was reported that they held talks with the representatives of Mia Khalifa.

However, soon came a clarification from Mia Khalifa’s side that no Indian company has approached her for a movie. What followed was reports about pornstar-turned-actress Sunny Leone replacing Mia. Finally, Omar Lulu has broken his silence and opened about what actually is the present status of this much talked about film.

In a recent interview to a popular Malayalam media group, the director made it clear that it was the company’s wish to rope in Mia Khalifa. They had asked him to work on an one-liner based on that. They were impressed with Omar’s story and told him that they will contact him after holding talks through the representatives of Mia.

Omar also added that it was not him but the company who made claims about getting Sunny Leone on board if talks with Mia Khalifa doesn’t materialize. However, the director refrained from naming the company as discussions are still in its initial stages.

He is planning to start shooting for Chunkzz 2 by May next year. The sequel will have a completely new set of actors and a fresh plot. As of now the director is busy with the works of his next film Oru Adaar Love, a teenage love story with newcomers in the lead roles. Shoot for the movie will be commencing in December and will hit screens by the end of April.

Aramm Review: Tamil cinema’s best this year!

Nayanthara is unarguably a superstar among the female actors. Her latest outing Aramm directed by debutant filmmaker Gopi Nainar was released this Friday. The promos and teasers looked very promising and the movie had a positive pre-release buzz. Let’s see how the movie has eventually turned out to be.

Aramm is a gripping social drama centered around a rescue operation headed by the district collector. The story is set in Kattur, a sea side backward village in Tamil Nadu. The residents there are suffering from acute shortage of potable water and have to travel kilometers to collect water for drinking purpose. One fine day an unfortunate incident occurs forcing the villagers to knock the doors of the concerned authorities. From there the movie shifts gear to a thriller mode as we bite nails to see if the rescue operation succeeds or not.

Director Gopi Nainar has written a thoroughly absorbing screenplay. He has taken sweet time to present before us the hardships of the villagers. The movie discusses several relevant topics right from water scarcity, the need for conserving our environment, the government’s negligence towards the financially backward section, the harsh reality of social injustices, exploitative politics and throws light on how a corrupt system functions.

In between the rescue operations we are shown a television show where a debate is going on about how we are spending hundreds of crores on satellites and not even a few thousands to save a four-year-old’s life. There are several such scenes in the film where Gopi Nainar throws his wrath at the system. His dialogues are hard-hitting and have a strong political flavour.

Reportedly, the collector’s role in the movie was not gender specific. When several leading actors refused to be part of this film, Nayanthara took it up and full marks to her for that. An actress who is considered as a glamour icon in the industry appears in just two sets of costumes and that itself shows how brave a call she has taken. As Madhivadhani, an upright collector, Nayanthara commands respect and her screen presence in certain cinematic scenes is top-notch.

The supporting actors Ramachandran Durairaj, Sunu Lakshmi and the Kakka Muttai boys have played their roles wonderfully well. Their earnest performance has brought life to the family’s helplessness and their grief mosits the viewers’ eyes.

Technically Aramm is brilliant as Om Prakash’s frames captures the proceedings in all its reality. The crowd shots, underground sequences and the aerial shots to film the large scale rescue mission have all come out excellently. Ghibran’s music is another standout element in Aramm. His background score makes the scenes work more effectively. Peter Hein has done a remarkable job in choreographing the rescue operations. The right combination of some tight editing, realistic frames and Ghibran’s splendid score turn these sequences into an edge of the seat watch.

In a nutshell, Aramm is a movie that you just cannot miss. It is sure to leave a lump in your throat.

CBI 5 in the offing; Makers waiting for Mammootty’s dates

The CBI series is a one of the most famous franchises in Malayalam cinema. Megastar Mammootty dons the role of CBI officer Sethurama Iyer, a shrewd investigating officer who solves all his cases using brain over brawn. Four installments of the series have already released and reports about a fifth part has been doing the rounds for nearly three years now.

Director K Madhu, who has helmed all four parts of the series, has had talks with Mammootty for a fifth part. All four movies in the series – Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, Jagratha, Sethurama Iyer CBI and Nerariyan CBI – were scripted by SN Swamy. The series started off in 1988 with the blockbuster movie Oru CBI Diary Kurippu. Nerariyan CBI was the last to release, twelve years back in 2005.

Reportedly, SN Swamy’s script has been locked for the fifth installment. Now the makers are just waiting for a go-ahead from the megastar. Mammootty is as busy as ever with a handful of films lined up. He is currently shooting for ad filmmaker Sharrath Sandith’s debut directorial Parole. Ajai Vasudev’s Masterpiece, Ram’s Tamil-Malayalam bilingual Peranbu, Shamdat’s Streetlights and Uncle are his movies lined up for release.

His upcoming films include Sethu’s Oru Kuttanadan Blog, Ranjith’s Bilathikadha, Khalid Rahman’s Unda, Sohan Seenulal’s and Shaji Padoor’s Abrahaminte Santhathikal. Apart from the aforementioned ones, Mammootty will also be working on two mega projects – Mamankam and Santhosh Sivan’s Kunjali Marakkar.

Director Ranjith’s next film titled Bilathikadha stars youngsters in the lead role. The ace filmmaker has mostly helmed movies with big stars but for his next he has roped in relatively newcomers to play the lead roles. Niranj and Anu Sithara will be seen as the protagonists in this movie scripted by Sethu.

Megastar Mammootty is also doing a crucial role in the film. Though its a cameo role, its a very significant one in the plot. The movie will be shot completely in England. The team was supposed to travel next week but they have now postponed the dates owing to the chilling weather in UK.

Reportedly, Mammootty was the one who suggested Ranjith and crew to postpone the shoot as day time is very less during winter. He has advised the team to shoot in February during the spring season for capturing the visual beauty of the country.

The team along with Mammootty will be heading to England in February. The megastar has allotted ten days from his busy schedule for shooting his portions. Mammootty and Ranjith share a great rapport as they have previously worked together in several films like Kaiyyoppu, Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha and Pranchiyettan and the Saint. The director’s last film Puthan Panam also had Mammootty in the lead.

Bilathikadha also stars Kaniha, Jewel Mary, Kalabhavan Shajon, Suresh Krishna,Dileesh Pothan and Kottayan Nazeer in supporting roles. Prashanth Nair will be cranking the camera and Sandeep is in charge of the edits. This upcoming movie is being produced by Maha Subair under the banner of Varnachitra Big Screen.

Kali Telugu remake: Here’s the release date of Dulquer Salmaan-Sai Pallavi starrer Hey Pillagada

Malayali star Dulquer Salmaan is foraying to Telugu with Mahanati, the biopic of legendary actress Savitri. It is his first straight Telugu film though he has had a few dubbed releases. He is playing the role of the late Gemini Ganesan in this movie which also stars Keerthy Suresh and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in major roles. This Nag Ashwin directorial is a highly anticipated film in the Telugu industry.

But before Mahanati, Dulquer will have another release in Tollywood. His hit Malayalam movie Kali is being dubbed and released in Telugu as Hey Pillagada. The movie is slated to hit screens in the Telugu states on November 24. A decent opening is expected as both Dulquer and Sai Pallavi are popular among the Telugu audience.

Kali, directed by Sameer Thahir had Dulquer and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles. Released in 2016, Kali was a commercially successful film. Dulquer plays Sidharth, a quick tempered banker in the movie. His anger issues land him and his wife Anjali in trouble during a car journey through a remote area.

It is learnt that the success of Sai Pallavi’s debut Telugu film Fidaa has inspired for a dubbed version for Kali. Previously, Dulquer’s other films like 100 Days Of Love, OK Kanmani, Ustad Hotel, Bangalore Days and Kammatipadam have also been either dubbed or remade in Telugu language.

Interestingly, Kali is also getting a Kannada version. Since the movie’s story can be set in any milieu, the movie is also getting remade in Kannada language. The Kannada version is titled as Kidi and it marks the directorial debut of S Raghu, a renowned choreographer. Bhuvan and debutant Pallavi are playing the lead roles in the movie.

Kerala Box Office: Ramleela 42 Days Collection Report

Releasing amidst various issues from all quarters, Dileep’s Ramaleela opened to excellent response from the audience. Even after a month of its release, the movie continues to move steadily at the box office. Despite the release of a slew of films, the Dileep starrer has managed to grab a few screens in Kerala.

As per collection reports from our trade sources, Ramaleela has grossed Rs 31.60 crores from its 42 days run in the Kerala box office. Failure of big ticket films have turned into a blessing in disguise for Ramleela. The makers have claimed that the movie had earned over Rs 50 crores from the worldwide collections. It had a good run in the UAE and a decent outing in Europe.

Before release there were even calls for boycotting the film but it has exceeded all the expectations. Ramaleela is now one of the highest grossing Malayalam movies of the year. The issues related to Dileep’s arrest in the actress assault case has not had any sort of impact on the movie’s box office earnings.

The movie directed by debutant Arun Gopy is a political thriller. Sachi has scripted this movie in which Dileep plays the role of Ramanunni, a public representative. Prayaga Martin has played the female lead. Seasoned actors like Raadhika Sarathkumar, Mukesh, Renji Panicker, Siddique, Viayaraghavan, Kalabhavan Shajon and Suresh Krishna are also part of the supporting cast.

This big budget movie is funded by Tomichan Mulakupadam’s Mulakupadam Films.

Mammootty starrer Masterpiece is getting ready for a grand release. The makers are skilfully promoting the movie by releasing posters at regular intervals. After a couple of ‘mass’ posters featuring Mammootty, the team is now releasing the character posters. Last day, the character introduction poster of Gokul Suresh was unveiled.

From the poster, we presume that Gokul is playing the role of a college student and his tilak on the forehead suggests that he will be seen as an innocent naïve guy in the movie. The youngster made an impressive debut last year with a charming performance in Mudhugauv, a full on fun entertainer.

Earlier, the team of Masterpiece had released the poster of Unni Mukundan as well. He is playing the role of John Thekkan, a no nonsense cop. Directed by Ajai Vasudev of Rajadhiraja fame, Masterpiece is a campus based mass entertainer. It is writer Udhayakrishna’s next film after the historic success of Pulimurugan and hence expectations are naturally on the higher side.

Mammootty plays the role of a professor in this film which also stara Varalakshmi Sarathkumar, Mahima Nambiar, Poonam Bajwa and Mukesh in major roles. Deepak Dev is handled the music department and Vinod Ilampally has cranked the camera.

Royal Cinemas, a new production company owned by CH Muhammed is producing this movie. It is scheduled for a grand release on December 21.

Shyamaprasad’s Hey Jude is eagerly awaited by the audience. Nivin Pauly is playing the lead in the movie which also marks the Malayalam debut of Trisha. The official first look poster of Hey Jude was released last day by the director himself through his social media handle. He also shared the link for the movie’s official page where all updates regarding the teaser, trailer and release date would be made.

The colourful first look poster features both the lead actors, Trisha and Nivin, in it. Since the movie is set in the backdrop of a sea, the poster has the ambiance of a sea with water like fonts and fishes in it. As we had reported earlier, both the lead actors are playing oddballs in the movie. Nivin is playing Jude who is a peculiar character, inconsistent with the world around him. Trisha’s character Crystal is also a similar person. The movie explores the events that occur when two such people end up in a relationship. It will showcase how love and understanding transforms Jude’s life.

Both Nivin and Trisha have pinned high expectations on the film, especially Trisha who is highly excited about playing a complex character like Crystal. Mukesh, Siddique, Prathap Pothen, Vijay Menon, Aju Varghese and Neena Kurup are also part of the supporting cast.

Hey Jude is a musical romantic tale set against the backdrop of Mangalore, Goa and Kochi. Veteran composer Ouseppachan is handling the music department. Girish Gangadharan, noted for his outstanding work in Angamaly Diaries, is cranking the camera.

The movie is being produced by Anil Kumar under the banner of Ambalakkara Global Films. It is expected to hit screens by the end of this year, most probably as a Christmas release.

Unni Mukundan to work as an assistant director in Mammootty’s Oru Kuttanadan Blog

Scriptwriter Sethu of Sachi-Sethu duo ia turning an independent director with an upcoming Mammootty starrer. The movie was initially titled as Kozhi Thankachan but has now been re-titled as Oru Kuttanadan Blog. It is a rural entertainer with much prominence to humour. Raai Laxmi, Anu Sithara and Deepti Sati play the three female leads.

An interesting aspect of this film is that actor Unni Mukundan will be working as an assistant director in it. He will be assisting Sethu, with whom he shares a brotherly relationship ever since the Mallu Singh days. Unni got his big break with Mallu Singh, which was co-written by Sethu. He was also part of Sethu’s recently scripted Achayans, directed by Kannan Thamarakkulam.

Sethu earlier in an interview had revealed about Unni’s interest in direction. When he asked Mammootty about Unni’s wish to assist, the megastar was concerned about the youngster’s acting commitments. But Unni adjusted his dates accordingly to work in this movie. He has already worked with Mammootty in Bombay March 12, Rajadhiraja and the yet-to-be-released Masterpiece.

Oru Kuttanadan Blog will feature Mammootty in a totally relatable role of an ordinary villager. The movie’s supporting cast has a mix of senior and younger actors. Nedumudi Venu, Siddique, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Jude Anthany Joseph, Sanju Sivaram and Adil Ibrahim will be seen in significant roles.

The movie will be shot extensively in Kuttanad and surrounding areas. The plot is set in a fictional village called Krishnapuram. Cinematography will be handled by Pradeep Nair and newcomer Sreenath is in charge of the music department.

Oru Kuttanadan Blog will be produced by Muraleedharan and Santha Muraleedharan under the banner of Anantha Vision. The banner has previously funded superhit films like Memories, Chocolate and Classmates. The movie will go on floors only after Mammootty wraps up the final schedule of Sharrath Sandith’s Parole.

23-year-old filmmaker Karthick Naren who took the South Indian audience by surprise with his debut film Dhuruvangal 16 is now busy working on his next. The movie titled as Naragasooran is a multistarrer with some popular actors from the South. Arvind Swamy, Malayali actor Indrajith, Sundeep Kishan, Shriya Saran and Meesaya Murukku fame Aathmika are playing the lead roles in the movie.

Shoot for Naragasooran is progressing at Ooty in brisk pace. As per the makers, this upcoming movie is a dark and emotionally intense suspense drama. The movie comes with the tagline ‘The tale of a fallen demon’. Indrajith, who is making a comeback to Tamil cinema after a long gap is playing a police officer’s role in the movie.

Karthick Naren’s debut directorial Dhuruvangal 16 was a surprise hit. The whodunit thriller starring Rahman in the lead emerged as a big sucesss, both critically and commercially. The director won widespread appreciation for his work, which was in stark contrast to the contemporary run-of-the-mill thriller films. So, Naragasooran has high expectations among the audience.

Karthick has retained almost the same set of technicians for his new movie. Sujith Sarang is wielding the camera and Sreejith Sarang is in charge of the edits. Oppam and Maya fame Ron Ethan Yohaan has been roped in to handle the music department.

Naragasooran is being jointly funded by director Gautham Menon under his banner Ondraga Entertainment. Impressed by Karthick’s Dhuruvangal 16, Gautham Menon himself came forward to produce the youngster’s second movie.
