“Tharangam is a fun entertainer with a tinge of fantasy”: A casual chat with director Dominic Arun

An industry will flourish only when youngsters enter the scene. They bring with them innovative ideas and fresh concepts that have not been explored much. Currently, Malayalam cinema is in a tremendous phase courtesy the arrival of a bunch of passionate youngsters. These newcomers are changing the conventional concepts of commercial cinema.

This coming Friday another debutant director, Dominic Arun is announcing his arrival with his maiden venture ‘Tharangam’. The movie starring Tovino Thomas, newbie Santhy Balachandran, Balu Varghese etc. is being funded by actor Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films. The director has co-written the movie along with Anil Narayanan.

Recently, I had a casual chat with Dominic Arun in the midst of his busy schedule. He is caught up with the final patch up works of his debut movie. Despite that we had a productive conversation where he divulged more about Tharangam.

From a director’s point of view, what is Tharangam?

Tharangam is a crime-comedy. It is the story of two policemen – Padmanabhan and Joy – who get suspended from the force. The movie has several other characters who are connected these two protagonists. It is a full on fun entertainer with a lot of interesting elements.

You have helmed a couple of short films before making your first feature film. How did the transition from short films happen?

I’m very fortunate as a filmmaker as my journey was quite simple. After the release of my short films, I got an opportunity to assist in a couple of films – Seconds and Money Ratnam. I learnt a lot while assisting and it was a tremendous experience. I got to know the vibe of a shooting spot and the process happening behind the camera, only while working in these films. The experience gained from there has helped me a lot during the making of Tharangam.

How did such a big banner like Wunderbar Films come into the picture? How did you approach them?

We first narrated the script to Tovino and he liked it. We didn’t have a producer then, so he introduced us to Sukumar Thekkepat, our executive producer. He also liked the script and came on board. We then started the ‘producer hunt’. One day, Suku etan called and said that Wunderbar Films is planning to make movies in Malayalam. So we approached them and luckily they agreed to produce our movie.

The involvement of a banner like Wunderbar Films has enhanced the expectations for Tharangam. This is their first film in Malayalam which further adds to the hype. How do you see that?

Wunderbar Films, as we all know is a big brand. They have a track record of funding some quality films (Kaaka Muttai, Visaranai, Power Paandi etc). Naturally, when they are making an entry to Mollywood with Tharangam, expectations are on the higher side. It’s truly a blessing that they are associated with our movie.

Tovino Thomas is now one of the most bankable actors in the industry and has been bagging several biggies. How do you rate him as an actor?

My friendship with Tovino goes way back to my assistant days. We have been in touch for a long time now. When I pitched the idea of Tharangam he liked it and immediately committed for it. He is a wonderful actor and has given his best for our movie.

The cast & crew of Tharangam comprises mostly of youngsters? Was it a conscious decision to work with freshers after being inspired by films like Angamaly Diaries?

Yes, it was a conscious decision to work with a rookie team, but it was not an inspired one. Most of us are together from our early short film days. The cameraman, music director, editor are all freshers. We knew each other well, so it was a very comfortable team to work with. In the casting side also there are about 30 new artists. We didn’t want stereotypical actors, as the unpredictable nature of the movie will be lost. So we purposely opted for newcomers and it turned out to be a great experience working with them.

Tharangam had a very peculiar teaser, one with no visuals but audio. The vocals suggests of a fantasy film. Is there a fantasy element in the movie?

Yes, there is a tinge of fantasy here which is treated in a very unique way. About the teaser, even while scripting, we had a clear idea that it should be this way. The vocals we have used in the teaser are very much connected to the movie and you will know that when you watch it from theatres.

Towards the end of the teaser, there is this stylish entry of an actor, probably a guest appearance. Names like Nivin Pauly, Dhanush, Riyaz Khan etc have been doing the rounds in social medias. Shall we break the ice here?

Tovino will be clearing the airs regarding that in a couple of days time. He will be revealing the names of all those who are not playing that particular role (laughs). We didn’t use that shot intentionally in the teaser. It just happened that way and the viewers interpreted it differently, which is actually a blessing in disguise.

Finally, what can the audience expect from Tharangam?

Tharangam will be a fun entertainer right from the word go till the very end. It has a fanatsy element and there will be a lot of chaos like in Priyadarshan sir’s films. While growing up I was influenced by filmmakers like Priyadarshan and Siddique-Lal. The climax of Tharangam will remind you of yesteryear classics like Ramji Rao Speaking and Mazha Peyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu. We have tried to merge that into today’s cinema and the audience’s sensibilities. Tharangam will be a completely entertaining watch and I assure a lot of fun for the audience visiting theatres.

It was great fun talking with Dominic Arun, who is all excited about the release of his first film. We, at Onlookers Media, wish him and the entire team of Tharangam all success.

Mammootty accepts Prime Minister’s invitation to be part of Swachhata mission.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been vigorously campaigning for the Swachhata hi Seva mission which emphasizes on the importance of cleanliness among the citizens. The PM has invited movie stars to be part of the mission to reach out more people.

After Rajinikanth and Mohanlal, Megastar Mammootty has also lent his support to the government’s initiative. In a Facebook post addressed to the prime minister, Mammootty has written,

Dear Prime Minister Modiji,

At the outset, while accepting your invitation to take part in the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva ‘ movement, let me congratulate you on your emphasis on cleanliness, which the Mahatma said, is godliness.

I take it as an honour to receive this personal invitation from you. For my part, I have always believed that cleanliness has to start from within, like self-discipline, and not something that needs to be imposed. Yet, we have to frame rules to make our country cleaner because awareness campaigns have not always been consistent. I support your efforts in that direction, and towards making Gandhiji’s dreams come true.

We all know that personal hygiene has to be given top priority, and once an individual learns to respect his own body he will be inspired to spread the word of cleanliness to those around him. I am of the view that commitment to planet earth and our country has to begin with the first step of ensuring that we keep our homes clean first, and then we set out to keep our promise to our brethren and the whole of our country and world. That is the soul of our civilization, which is codified in the phrase, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

I express my thanks for this invite once again.

Mammootty has always been a socially committed actor who has often voiced his opinions in the socio-political issues of the society. His participation in the cleanliness mission is clearly a booster that will take the message to more Keralites.

It is already known that writer Sethu is making his directorial debut with Mammootty. The movie is said to be titled as Kozhi Thankachan and will have three female leads. Anu Sithara and Nee-na fame Deepti Sati have already been confirmed. Reportedly, Lakshmi Rai, who recently changed her name to Raai Laxmi Raai, has been roped in as the other heroine.

Kozhi Thankachan will be her fifth film with Mammootty after sharing screen space with him in Parunth, Annan Thambi, Chattambinadu and Rajadhiraja. Kozhi Thankachan is touted to be a rural entertainer that will have much prominence to humour. Mammootty will be seen as a totally relatable role of an ordinary villager in this movie. It is being planned to be shot extensively in Kuttanad and nearby areas.

An interesting aspect of Kozhi Thankachan is that actor Unni Mukundan will be working in it as an associate director. He will be assisting Sethu with whom he is very close ever since the Mallu Singh days.

Meanwhile, Mammootty’s Onam release Pullikkaran Staraa continues to do good business across all the centres. His next release will be Masterpiece, a mass entertainer directed by Ajai Vasudev. Shamdat’s debut directorial Streetlights, ad filmmaker Sharrath Sandith’s Parole, Ram’s Tamil-Malayalam bilingual Peranbu and Shaji Padoor’s Abrahaminte Santhathikal : A Police Story are some of the other projects in Mammootty’s kitty.

Director Sundar C’s magnum opus Sangamithra has been in the news ever since the project was announced. The movie’s massive scale, it’s high profile launch in Cannes and Shruthi Haasan opting out were all in the headlines.

Sangamithra, written and directed by Sundar C is a period film which is estimated to be made on a whopping budget of Rs 250 crores. Famous production house Sri Thenandal Films is producing this movie. Jayam Ravi and Arya will be playing the male protagonists. Shruthi Hassan was supposed to play the titular role of a princess but she walked out at the last moment citing her displeasure with the makers for not providing her the full bound script.

Ever since then, names of several leading actresses like Hansika, Nayanthara etc have been doing the rounds but now it finally seems like the makers have zeroed in on who to replace Shruthi Haasan. As per latest reports, the hot and happening Bollywood actress Disha Patani has been brought on board for playing Sangamithra.

Disha Patani shot to fame with MS Dhoni: The Untold Story in which she played one of the female leads. The actress was so popular that she was named the nation’s offical crush last year.

Sangamithra is a period drama set in the 8th century AD. Jayam Ravi and Arya have been undergoing rigorous training in horse riding, physical combat and other weapon-based martial arts training. Disha Patani is also expected to undegro similar training for the movie. An official announcement about her casting will be made very soon.

Oscar Award winner AR Rahman will be handling the music department and Sabu Cyril has been roped in as the production designer. The movie will go on floors in December, this year.

Shah Rukh Khan likely to star in the Hindi version of Vikram Vedha

Shah Rukh Khan likely to star in the Hindi version of Vikram Vedha

Director duo Pushkar-Gayatri’s Vikram Vedha is still continuing it’s successful theatrical run. Upon its release on July 21, the movie garnered praise from all corners and soon became the talk of the town. The movie starring Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi in the titular roles won excellent reviews from the critics as well as the common audience.

The smashing success of Vikram Vedha triggered talks about its remake in other languages. According to latest reports, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment have expressed their interest to remake the movie in Hindi. It is said that Y Not Studios, who funded the original, will be collaborating with the Bollywood giant for the remake.

Y Not Studios had tweeted last day, “We have not sold the remake rights of Vikram Vedha in any language. We have plans of producing it ourselves. Official announcement soon. Tx”

Since, they have not denied SRK’s involvement in the remake, speculations are still rife about him co-producing and starring in the movie. It is also worth a mention that it was Shah Rukh Khan who launched the trailer of the original from his Twitter account. It is still not sure which role he would be playing in the movie – the forthight cop Vikram or the ruthless gangster Vedha.

Vikram Vedha is inspired from the popular folklore Vikram Betal. The basic concept is borrowed from there and placed in an engaging cat and mouse game between a police officer and a gangster. Madhavan played the tough and cop Vikram and Vijay Sethupathy essayed the role of Vedha, a gangster with grey shades. Both the actors won widespread appreciation for their fabulous perfomance.

Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan is shooting for Anand L Rai’s yet-to-be-titled movie in which he is playing a dwarf. His last release Jab Harry Met Sejal tanked miserably at the box office. So the actor will itching to get back to winning ways very soon.
