Sunday Holiday Review

Asif Ali’s latest outing is Sunday Holiday, directed by Jis Joy of Bicycle Thieves fame. Aparna Balamurali and Pretham fame Sruthi Ramachandran play the female leads. From the promos and songs, the movie promised to be a feel good entertainer. Let’s see how it turned out on screen.

Unni Mukundan (Sreenivasan) is this college professor who dreams of making it big in the film industry. One Sunday, he tries hard to impress filmmaker David Paul, (Lal Jose) by narrating his script. The director, who is in his hospital bed tries his best not to entertain Unni but he finally agress to listen to the narration.

Meanwhile there is Amal (Asif Ali) who is new to the city after leaving his native place due to some problems. There is the bold Anu (Aparna Balamurali) and Naakutti (Siddique) who are all from various backgrounds but are somehow connected to the core plot. Anything more will serve as big spoliers for the audience. Sunday Holiday has a plethora of characters but most of them have enough prominence in the plot.

Director Jis Joy, who has also written the movie has done a decent job in packaging it as a entertaining product. Unlike his debut film Bicycle Theives, Sunday Holiday has a different treatment and the team have done a pretty good job in their attempt to pull off an entertaining feel-good kind of movie.

That said, Sunday Holiday is not short of flaws. It has a fair share of shortcomings in the screenplay as it lacks freshness. Most of the scenes are predictable and that affects the engaging factor halfway. However, the director has succeded in ensuring that the movie’s ending has something in it that won’t leave the audience disappointed.

Coming to the acting side, all the artits have performed well. Asif Ali’s Amal was not really a challenging character and he was in ease playing that role. Sreenivasan, the ever dependable Siddique and Lal Jose have justified their casting. Aparna Balamurali was convincing while playing the role of Anu, a bold and independent woman. The supporting cast of Shruthi Ramachandran, Alencier Ley Lopez, Dharmajan, Bhagath Manuel and KPAC Lalitha were all good with their performances.

Alex J Pulickal’s pleasingly colorful frames complemented the tone of the movie. Editing by Ratheesh Raj could have been slightly better by trimming down some uninteresting moments. Deepak Dev as always delivers what is expected from him with his refreshing compositions and background score.

In a nutshell, Sunday Holiday, is a good film that can be enjoyed without any presumptions. It is a clean entertainer that can be watched with families. You can take home some laughs, emotions and some inspiration.
