Kerala Box Office: Sakhavu Final Collection Report

Nivin Pauly’s Sakhavu has reached the end of it’s theatrical run. The movie, directed by Sidhartha Siva was released during the Vishu season. Eventhough Sakhavu managed to garner critical appreciation it could not manage a big opening in the box office. It’s failure to cash in big on the Vishu holidays had an impact in the overall run as the audience count was mostly mediocre thereafter.

According to latest reports from trade sources, Sakhavu has grossed Rs 14.20 crores from the Kerala box office. Nivin Pauly enjoys huge popularity outside Kerala but that could not help in the box office collections of Sakhavu. The movie is centred around communism and it’s ideologies, which appeals majorly to the Malayali audience.

Sakhavu features Nivin in a dual role, as Sakhavu Krishnan and Krishnakumar. Critics rated the actor’s performance as Sakhavu Krishnan as his career best. Siddharth wants BJP to stop Hindu nation narrative

Siddharth wants BJP to stop Hindu nation narrative

Popular actor Siddharth in a series of tweets has shown his dissent to certain policies of the ruling BJP government. Siddharth, despite being a very busy actor, has always been actively involved in social works. His efforts during the Chennai floods were much appreciated. He is probably the first actor from the South to raise voice against the BJP government.

Siddharth in his Twitter questioned about the cattle slaughter issue and asked the central government to stay out. He wants the BJP government to stop the Hindu nation narrative.

Following are his tweets,

Dear #BJP you have power. Empower #India. Stay out of people’s private choices. Stop this#Hindu nation narrative. We are better than that.

The row about #cattle markets is unnecessary and only polarises people. State govts allow or disallow slaughter. #Center should stay out.

Most of us are neither #bhakts nor #libtards or whatever these ugly names are. We are just#Indians. Live and let live. Stop the hate!

Siddharth‏ also posted a photo and expressed his concern about people injured in the clash over slaughter ban. The actor wrote about the incident in IIT Madras where a Malayali PhD research students was attacked by a group of students for supporting beef consumption.

“Broken face and broken arm got into a fight. Who hit whom? & since when did #IIT students start whacking each other?”

Recently, the Narendra Modi government introduced a rule that bans the sale of cattle for slaughter. The ban triggered widespread protests in several parts of the country especially in Kerala, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. Citizens have been questioning about how the union government can introduce such an undemocratic rule that pokes into their food habits.

Kamal Haasan threatens to quit cinema, says GST rate will ruin film industry

Kamal Haasan threatens to quit cinema, says GST rate will ruin film industry

Kamal Haasan has come out strong against the proposed 28% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the regional entertainment industry, saying he would be forced to quit cinema if the GST rate for the entertainment industry is not slashed by at least half.

GST is set to be launched next month and it aims at replacing a tangled web of central and state levies with a single tax. Kamal Haasan and other senior members of the film fraternity including South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce President Kalyan were speaking to media after discussing the impact of the proposed GST slabs for the film industry.

“We welcome GST and one India one tax. But this rate will ruin regional cinema. If I can’t afford the tax I’ll have to quit. I will not work for the government… what is this? Is this the East India Company?“, asked Kamal Haasan.

He also reminded the government that it’s the regional cinema which brings India recognition at various international platforms.

“Regional films, Hollywood films and Hindi films cannot be put on the same slab and film tickets can’t be fixed like an essential service. Regional cinema has always been the pride of India, and has bagged the most awards for the country. This is achieved by films made on one tenth the budget of a Hindi film. We are not against Hindi, but you cannot bring a monoculture in a diverse country like India. Diversity is the reason why this country is strong. You cannot pressurise regional cinema through taxation.”

GST, India’s biggest tax overhaul, is set to be initiated on July 1. A small list of goods will be exempted from taxes while the rest will be taxed at the approved rates of 5, 12, 18 and 28 percent.

The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce in a statement appealed to the Centre to reduce the GST rate on entertainment tax to 18 percent from the proposed 28 percent, copyright sale rate from 12 percent to five per cent and the slab for services like technicians and artistes to 12 percent from 18 percent.
