No more fake collection reports; e-ticketing introduced in theatres in Kerala

In a landmark move that will boost the revenue of the Malayalam film industry, Kerala government has launched the e-ticketing system, which has been long in due. This system will ensure transparency in ticket sales and the collection reports from various centres.

Information Kerala Mission (IKM) have developed the software for implementing e-ticketing in cinema theatres. The system has been implemented from today in the Kairali theatre complex, owned by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) in Thiruvananthapuram.

Within a week, it will be initiated in other centres also. The KSFDC is planning to introduce the system in various phases in all the private cinema theatres in the State. By this system, the 570 thetares in Kerala will be brought under a single server using the software.

IKM was assigned to develop an e-ticketing system by the Local Self Government Department (LSGD), under which the film theatres in the state function. The LSGD gave sanction to develop the software in February this year. IKM is also in the process of developing an app to book tickets.

The previous UDF government had tried to implement the e-ticketing State but had to back off due to the protests from various quarters including the Film Exhibitors Federation. The LSGD had said that the admission to cinema in any place in the state shall be made only with a ticket in electronic form.

With the e-ticketing system, tax will go to the LSGD and the shares of distributors and theatre owners will be deposited in their respective bank accounts. Collections from each day can be referred online.

This move is expected to bring transparency in the film industry where the daily collection reports (DCR) are faked to evade entertainment tax and share of the distributors. This would also help in bringing transparency to the system of allotting theatres and hold-over.

Nivin Pauly to star in Mammootty’s biopic?

There is a strong buzz going around in social medias about a biopic on Mammootty’s life. The superstar has had an illustrious career that has enough tales of hardwork and inspiration to be shown on big screen. Going by these talks, director Jude Anthany Joseph is planning to make a biopic on Mammooty’s life and Nivin Pauly is being considered to play the lead in this film.

This is not the first time that such a news is being reported. Jude, before making his debut as an independent filmmaker had made a short film on Mammootty’s life, titled ‘Mammookka’s Biography’. It was produced by his close friends and actors Nivin Pauly and Aju Varghese. Eventhough the short film was completed in 2011, it was released only in February 2014. Upon it’s release in YouTube, the short film went viral clocking thousands of views within a matter of few hours.

Following the short film’s release, there were talks about the director planning to make a feature film based on the life of Mammootty. Nivin Pauly was rumoured to be playing the lead role while Vineeth Sreenivasan was said to take up the role of his father; veteran actor Sreenivasan. But the talks soon died down.

Now after three years, social medias are abuzz with the same talk once again. However, there is still no official word. Nivin is now an even bigger star riding high with a string of blockbusters against his name. Apart from establishing himself as a bankable star in Malayalam, the actor is trying to make inroads into the Tamil industry also. His first straight Tamil movie, Richie is gearing up for release. He has also signed for two other Tamil movies.

SS Rajamouli feels lucky that Sridevi was not a part of Baahubali

SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus Baahubali franchise has attained global recognition. The director is now hugely popular all across the country. Rajamouli is known for his outspoken nature, he rarely shies away from the media and gives crystal clear answers.

In one such recent interview, the director was asked about why Sridevi was not part of Baahubali though he had approached her initially. Rajamouli wanted to cast Sridevi for the role of Sivagami to give the movie a pan Indian appeal. She is a very popular star in the North and hence he thought that casting her would cater the movie to a national audience.

But Rajamouli now feels lucky that she was not part of the project. Apparently, Sridevi had quoted a hefty sum as her remuneration. She had also made some unreasonable demands including booking an entire floor in a five-star hotel and business class tickets from Mumbai to Hyderabad everytime she flied down for shooting.

The actress even demanded a share in the Hindi version of Baahubali. In the interview, Rajamouli explained how the role eventually ended up in Ramya Krishnan’s hands.

Rajamouli is quoted saying,

“After hearing series of wishes from Sridevi, we thought that it would be above our budget to meet her demands. Then we approached Ramya Krishnan and she proved herself fantastic and we now feel, we were lucky that we dropped the idea of having Sridevi in our film. The film wouldn’t have been like that had if she has done Sivagami’s role. Sridevi is known for subtle performances and she doesn’t have a powerful voice. Whereas, Ramya Krishnan has a terrific screen presence, voice and capable of delivering an intense performance.”

Sridevi opted out of Baahubali and went on to sign for Tamil superstar Vijay’s fantasy adventure movie Puli. The movie, directed by Chimbudevan ended up as a collosal failure. It is worth a mention that Sridevi also had issues with the Puli team over her remuneration.

Sachin’s biopic, Sachin: A Billion Dreams continues to do great business across all the release centres. The film, directed by James Erskine is made as a docu-drama, a first of it’s kind experience for the Indian audience.

According to reports from trade analysts, Sachin A Billion Dreams has earned Rs 35.75 crore in all the four languages.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the film’s collection after five days at box office,

Sachin A Billion Dreams hit screens on May 26 amid massive hype. It was released in 2400 screens in India and 400 screens overseas. The film opened to largely positive reports from the critics. On the opening day, film opened at the box office with a collection of Rs 8.40 crores.

Sachin: A Billion Dreams showcases Sachin Tendulkar’s journey to become the world’s best cricketer. Apart from his cricket and personal life, it also reveals certain unknown aspects of his life. The film had real footage from Sachin’s personal life to the years he spent on the field.

Sachin Tendulkar, his wife Anjali, kids Sara and Arjun, cricketers Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virender Sehwag are all part of the movie. Oscar Award winner AR Rahman has composed the music. The film was shot simultaneously in Hindi, Marathi and English. It was later dubbed in Tamil and Telugu.

Manju Warrier will be seen without any makeup in Udhaharanam Sujatha

Udhaharanam Sujatha is Manju Warrier’s upcoming movie, directed by debutant Phantom Praveen. Shoot for the movie is currently progressing in Trivandrum. Filmmaker Martin Prakkat and actor Jiju George have started a new production house, The Scene and Udhaharanam Sujatha is their first venture.

Manju Warrier is playing the titular role of a widow with a 15 year old daughter in the film. The actress will be seen sans any makeup in the movie. She is playing the resident of a local colony who does odd jobs to raise her daughter. Manju Warrier’s performance will be the major highlight in the movie. Martin Prakkat and Anuraga Karikkin Vellam fame Naveen Bhaskar are jointly scripting this film, which will showcase the struggles of a single mother in upbringing her teenage daughter.

Mamta Mohandas is also playing a pivotal role. She will be seen as the district Collector. Her character has great prominence in the plot. Reportedly, some of the events in the film are based on real-life IAS officers and incidents.

Nedumudi Venu, Alencier Ley Lopez, Sudhi Koppa and Joju George are also part of the cast. Newcomer Anaswara is playing the role of Manju’s daughter in this film.

Veteran cinematographer Madhu Neelakandan is cranking the camera while Mahesh Narayanan, who recently made his directorial debut with the widely acclaimed Take Off, will be editing the movie. Gopi Sunder is handling the music department in Udhaharanam Sujatha.

Aamir Khan’s Dangal is wreaking havoc in the Chinese box office. The movie was released on May 5 in 9000 screens in the country. Ever since then, it has been getting phenomenal response from the Chinese audience. Within a month from it’s release, Dangal created history by minting over Rs 1000 crores at the Chinese box office.

The worldwide earnings of the movie is nearing the Rs 2000 crore mark. If the movie manages to cross the mark, it will be the first ever Indian movie to do so. SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is close behind Dangal. It is worth a mention that the Prabhas- Rana Daggubati starrer has not yet released in China.

Dangal, recently become the 33rd film in Chinese cinema history to cross one Billion RMB, which in Indian currency amounts to about Rs 1000 crore. Dangal’s gross earnings crossed one billion RMB, joining the exclusive club of just 32 films in China cinema history market.

Eventhough the release of the Hollywood movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales dethroned Dangal from the top spot, it is still managing to do some great business.

Dangal is a sports drama directed by Nitish Tiwari. The movie is inspired from the real life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trained his daughters to world class wrestlers. Aamir Khan portrayed Mahavir Singh Phogat’s character while Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar played his daughter’s parts.

The cast of Dulquer Salmaan’s Solo is getting bigger and better. The movie, which marks the debut of Bollywood filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar in Malayalam, has been in the making for over 6 months now. Solo has a plethora of stars and the latest addition to the camp is Bollywood actor Dino Morea.

In a recent interview, Dino spilled beans about the movie’s theme his character. According to him, Solo is about the four elements – Earth, Fire, Water and Wind. Bejoy Nambiar has woven these elements into four stories with love and revenge as the premise. Dino is playing the role of an army man, Major Dev Pratap Singh. He imparts a few life experiences to Dulquer’s character Rudra on relationships. It must be remembered that Dulquer was recently seen in an army man’s looks on the sets of Solo.

Apart from Dino, the director has roped in Deepti Sati, Suhasini, Nasser and Neha Sharma as part of the movie, which is currently being shot in Lonavala, Maharashtra.

The film already has a stellar ensemble cast featuring Sruthi Hariharan, Kabali fame Sai Dhansika, Prakash Belawadi, Bengali filmmaker Quashiq Mukherjee, Manoj K Jayan, Arti Venkatesh, Ann Augustine and Marati actress Sai Tamhankar.

International stuntman Kenny Bates, popular for his work in Hollywood films like Die Hard and Transformers has been roped in to choreograph the stunts in Saaho. Famed trio of Shankar Ehsaan Loy is handling the music department while renowned cinematographer R Madhie will be cranking the camera. The movie will be releasing by the end of next year.
