Baahubali: The Conclusion release is in trouble

Baahubali: The Conclusion release is in trouble

We are hardly two weeks away from the release of the most anticipated movie of the year Baahubali: The Conclusion. The makers were eyeing for a smooth release worldwide on April 28 before trouble has struck in the form of a few pro-Kannada groups.

Apparently, these groups are planning to stall the release of the movie because of a controversial statement made by actor Sathyaraj nine years back. During a protest meet in Tamil Nadu over the water sharing dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Sathyaraj had lashed at these pro-Kannada groups. As a result, they are now leading an anti-Baahubali campaign threatening to stop the movie’s release across the state.

They have demanded an apology from Sathyaraj. Talking to media recently, director SS Rajamouli said that targeting his movie because of Sathyaraj was not right.

Rajamouli is quoted saying to India Today, “It is a sad thing and we were shocked to see that on social media. I have worked with Sathyaraj for almost five years and I could have never ever imagined he is a person who could try to hurt someone. Some videos were posted on the internet. When we started inquiring, we learned that whatever comments he made it was nine years back. And after that, about 30 films of his were released in Karnataka. Baahubali 1 released, no one had problems with that. And suddenly, raking up the issue at this point in time is not right. He is not the director of the film. He is not the writer or producer or the hero. He is just a supporting actor. He acted in the film and took his remuneration and went away. So whatever people are doing now against Baahubali 2 will not affect him in any manner. I think people will understand the issue and it will be resolved.”

According to certain reports from national media, no distributors or exhibitors have bought the theatrical rights of Baahubali 2, which is pegged at Rs 40 crore, in Karnataka fearing a backlash from the pro-Kannada groups. Meanwhile, the makers are having talks with all the groups concerned to ensure a smooth release for Baahubali.

“Those who didn’t get the awards can go on and say anything they want”, Priyadarshan hits back at criticisms

“Those who didn’t get the awards can go on and say anything they want”, Priyadarshan hits back at criticisms

Veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan has been in the news for sometime now. The director headed the jury for the 64th National Film Awards and some of their choices have been met with severe criticism. Many, including senior filmmakers, alleged nepotism in the jury’s choices.

The Priyadarshan headed jury have been at the receiving end of a lot of flak for some of their choices including the best actor award, which to everyone’s surprise went to Akshay Kumar for Rustom. It is worth a mention that the two have worked together in several movies like Hera Pheri, Bhool Bhulaiya and Garam Masala. Mohanlal, another close friend of Priyadarshan, winning the special jury award were also pointed out by many.

Priyadarshan has now hit back strongly at the criticisms. In a recent interview he said that all those who are crying foul are not aware of how a jury functions. The National awards jury comprises of ten regional jury members and himself.

He is quoted saying, “Out of the 334 films that were considered, many films that I personally considered were good, never made to the last 86 movies that were viewed by national jury. We could decide only from these movies. The list of winners was chosen by 38 jury members and I don’t believe that they were senseless. It was a collective decision. Those who didn’t get the awards can go on and say anything they want. The jury chairman is not the one who makes the decision. Chairman’s vote counts only if there is a dispute. The winners are chosen by voting by the jury members that included one member from every state. There were professors, vice chancellors, critics, filmmakers and journalists. I have to agree with their collective decision. For this year’s awards, I didn’t cast a single vote because all the decisions were unanimous. Majority in the jury had not not seen Mohanlal’s performance till then, so naturally they opted for him for the special jury award.

Take Off, Puthan Panam and Sakhavu has struck gold this holiday season

Many highly awaited Malayalam movies have hit screens this holiday season. Out of that, three films- Take Off, Sakhavu and Puthan Panam have been the most impressive.

Take Off, directed by renowned editor Mahesh Narayanan was the first to release. The movie was met with extraordinary reviews from the critics. It was soon the talk of the town with celebrities including Mohanlal, Mammootty, Kamal Haasan and Suriya praising the movie. Take Off, written by Mahesh Narayanan and PV Shaji Kumar is inspired from real life incidents where a group of Malayali nurses were trapped in the Tikrit region in Iraq during the ISIS attacks in 2014.

Puthan Panam, released on April 12, is running successfully in theatres. The all time favorite duo of Ranjith and Mammootty have once again delivered a wonderful movie. It is a socially relevant film which explores the current financial situation and the events post demonetisation in the country. Mammootty is at his best as Nithyananda Shenoy, a character that is even hard to imagine with any other actor.

Nivin Pauly starrer Sakhavu was released yesterday (April 15) to excellent response from the audience. Critics have also rated this political drama as a good watch despite having it’s share of flaws. The movie, directed by Sidharth Siva features Nivin in a dual role. The actor has given his career best performance while portraying the role of comrade Krishnan. The movie is not just a political drama, it has equal doses of romance, machismo and humour. It is a clean commercial package that entertains as well as enlightens the audience about what politics is.

All these three movies have a common factor- social relevance. The audience have been able to connect well with these movies and may be that’s one of the major reasons behind their success.
