Priyadarshan will head the jury for 64th National Film Awards

Popular filmmaker Priyadarshan will head the jury of the 64th National Film Awards.

“I am definitely excited and happy and it’s going to be a big responsibility bestowed on me. I will do my best,” Priyadarshan said to IANS.

Priyadarshan has been in the industry for over three decades. He has carved a niche for himself in the Indian film industry. The director has made over 90 movies in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The government of India honoured him by giving the Padma Shri in 2012 for his contribution towards cinema.

Some of his movies like Kalapani, Kaanchivaram and more recently Sila Samayangalil has won several accolades at the national and international level.

The director’s last film was Oppam with superstar Mohanlal in the lead. The movie was both critically and commercially acclaimed. It is currently the second highest grossing Malayalam movie of all time. He is also planning to remake the movie in Hindi with Akshay Kumar in the lead.

Resul Pookkutty to work in Mammootty’s upcoming movie

Megastar Mammootty is currently busy shooting for 7th Day fame Shyam Dhar’s upcoming entertainer. Mammootty is playing the role of a tutor in a teacher training institute, in the movie.

The movie is written by newbie Ratheesh Ravi. It will be a light hearted entertainer in which Mammootty will be seen as an Idukki native who moves to Kochi as part of his job.

Oscar Award winner Resul Pookkutty is the sound designer in the movie. Resul has worked only in four Malayalam movies and out of that three are Mammootty starrers, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, Kunjananthante Kada and Pathemari.

Vinod Illampally who was wielded the camera in movies like Jalam, Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam, Grandmaster etc is the DOP. Director Shyam Dhar shared a photo with the two acclaimed technicians in his official Facebook page. M Jayachandran is composing the songs for this movie.

The director had earlier said that, Mammootty’s character in the movie is a very jovial person. He is a fabulous story teller and the film will reveal the reasons for the same.

Nee-na fame Deepti Sati and Asha Sarath are playing the female leads in the movie. Innocent, Dileesh Pothen, Hareesh Kanaran and Sohan Seenulal will be seen in supporting characters.

This yet to be titled movie is being produced by B Rakesh and Mohammed Salim under the banner MSM Cinemas.

Multistarrers are a rarity in South, especially in Tamil. Filmmakers like Gautham Menon have been open to the idea of casting big stars from various industries to make a multilingual movie. Gautham Menon has already roped in stars like Prithviraj, Puneeth Raj Kumar, Anushka Shetty, Tamannah Bhatia and many other leading stars for an upcoming movie.

Seems like there’s more such movies in the planning stages in Kollywood. According to reports, legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam will be teaming up with Vijay, Vikram and Telugu actor Ram Charan Teja for an action thriller. This is huge!

Reportedly, Mani Ratnam is planning an action thriller on the lines of his cult blockbuster Thalapathy starring Rajinikanth, Mammootty and Aravind Swamy in the lead roles. Ram Charan has apparently had talks with Mani Ratnam while Vijay and Vikram have already given their nod. If the project happens, it certainly has the potential to set the cash registers ringing across South India. Before jumping into conclusions, we will have to wait for an official word.

The director meanwhile is busy with the post production works of his upcoming romantic movie Kaatru Veliyidai. The movie stars Karthi and Bollywood actress Aditi Rao Hydari in the lead roles. AR Rahman is scoring the music while Ravi Varman has handled the camera. Kaatru Veliyidai is scheduled to hit screens on April 7.

Mammootty’s next release, The Great Father is all set to hit screens on March 30. The movie is releasing amid massive hype. The highly impressive promos have rocketed the expectations of the audience.

The Great Father is directed by debutant Haneef Adeni. This is probably the first time that a newcomer’s movie is having such sky-high expectations. He is currently busy with the final patch up works of the movie.

Earlier there were reports about Prithviraj, who is also producing TGF, teaming up with Haneef Adeni for a new movie. It must be remembered that Haneef Adeni had initially approached Prithviraj to play the lead in The Great Father. He instead opted to produce the movie under the banner August Cinemas. It was Prithviraj who suggested Mammootty for the role.

There were unconfirmed reports about Prithvi and Haneef Adeni teaming up for an action thriller. However, we now hear that the director’s next will be with superstar Mohanlal.

Recently, Haneef Adeni posted a photo with Mohanlal in his official Facebook account. That had raised several specualtions in social medias about the two working together soon.

If the project materializes, Haneef Adeni will be one of the very few filmmakers whose first two films were with Mohanlal and Mammootty. Mollywood has a long line up of promising young directors and Haneef Adeni has registered his name in the list even before the release of his first movie.

Biju Menon already has a handful of movies in the pipeline but it seems like the actor is in no mood to stop signing for new projects.

The actor has now signed for a new movie with director Shafi, titled as Sherlock Toms. Story for the movie is written by Najeem Koya while the dialogues are written by Shafi. Sachi, Shafi and Najeem Koya have jointly written the screenplay for this movie.

Biju Menon has earlier worked with director Shafi in Marykkondoru Kunjaadu. In fact, it was the dim witted grey shaded role in the movie that gave him a image make over.

Sherlock Toms will be produced by Global United Media, who have funded movies like Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi and Kammattipadam.

Meanwhile, Biju Menon has finished shooting for Rakshadikari Baiju, directed by Ranjan Pramod. He has also completed his portions for the first schedule of Lakshyam, directed by debutant Anzar Khan. Director Jeethu Joseph is scripting this movie. He is also playing a pivotal character in Lava Kusha starring Neeraj Madhav and Aju Varghese in the leads. The movie is directed by Gireesh Mano.

Biju Menon has also signed for Oraayiram Kinakkalal which will be directed by Pramod Mohan. He is playing the role of an UK returnee in this movie. Mudhugauv fame Sharu P Varghese will be seen as the female lead.

Massive release for Veeram outside India

Director Jayaraj’s epic historic drama Veeram was released on February 24 to good reception from the audience. The movie is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. It is the fifth installment in director Jayaraj’s Navarasa series.

Veeram features Bollywood actor Kunal Kapoor in the lead role of Chandu Chekavar, a warrior from the Vadakkan Pattukal of North Malabar region in Kerala. He worked hard for months to develop a warrior’s physique in addition to learning sword fight and the martial art, Kalaripayattu for playing his part in the movie.

Though the other major characters were played lesser known actors, the movie had great hype prior to the release. The impressive promos that were promoted by Bollywood superstars heightened the expectations of the audience. It was also screened at film festivals like BRICS Film Festival and IFFI, Goa.

Upon release, critics praised the movie for the sheer scale at which it was made and the efforts to make such a quality historic within the limitations of Mollywood. Veeram was produced with a budget of Rs 35 crores as a multilingual in English, Malayalam and Hindi.

Now, the makers are planning a wide release for Veeram outside the country. Veeram being an adaptation of the world famous classic Macbeth, is expected to have a good run in the overseas centres. The track “We will Rise” was eligible for the Oscars this year, though it didn’t get nominated. Veeram also found a place in the list of films in contention for the best picture Oscar this year.

The movie’s technical side boasts of big names from the west. Allan Poppleton, who has worked in Hollywood films like Lord of the Rings and Avatar, choreographed the stunts in the movie.

Award winning composer Jeff Rona, who was an associate of the legendary Hans Zimmer, is the music department. Oscar and Emmy award winning make-up artist Trefor Proud is also part of the technical team of Veeram. Veteran cinematographer S Kumar cranked the camera while Appu N Bhattathiri handled the edits.

Chandramohan Pillai and Pradeep Rajan of Chandrakala Arts jointly produced this big budget movie.

Dulquer Salmaan to play a cameo in an upcoming Tamil movie

Young sensation Dulquer Salmaan has a slew of projects in his kitty for this year. He will soon join the second schedule of Bejoy Nambiar’s bilingual movie Solo.

The latest we hear is that he will be seen in an upcoming Tamil movie starring Kabali fame Sai Dhansika, in the lead. It is a bilingual made in Tamil and Telugu. The Telugu version is rumoured to be titled as Vaalu Jada, while the Tamil version has not yet been titled.

The movie directed by Ramana, reportedly features Jallikattu scenes and the actress will be seen playing the brave sport. Dulquer would be playing a brief cameo in the movie.

Dulquer was last seen in a cameo role in Midhun Manuel Thomas’ Ann Maria Kalipilanu. Dulquer appeared in a brief but pivotal role in this movie which featured Sunny Wayne and Sara Arjun in the lead roles.

Dulquer has also played a brief role in Soubin Shahir’s debut directorial Parava. The movie stars Kismath fame Shane Nigam in the lead role. Dulquer shot for around 15 days in the movie. He will be seen in a new look with a beardless moustache in the movie.

Take Off release date confirmed

Release date for editor turned filmmaker Mahesh Narayanan’s debut directorial Take Off has finally been confirmed. The movie will hit screens on March 24.

Take Off is a story about nurses who get trapped in Iraq during the war period. The movie’s trailer had some stunning visuals of the war affected areas. Upon release, it was trending virally in social medias.

Kunchacko Boban, Fahadh Faasil, Parvathy Menon and Asif Ali play the lead roles in the movie. Parvathy Menon and Kunchako Boban appear as nurses while Fahadh Faasil will be seen as an Indian ambassador in the movie.

The movie is jointly written by Mahesh Narayanan and PV Shaji Kumar. Sanu Varghese who has worked in big budget movies like Vishwaroopam, Thoongavanam, Wazir etc has handled the cinematography in this movie.

Mahesh Narayanan and Abhilash Balachandran have jointly edited the movie. Shaan Rahman has composed the music while Gopi Sunder has handled the background score.

Take Off is produced by Anto Joseph and Shebin Becker in association with Rajesh Pillai Films. Many close acquaintances of late filmmaker Rajesh Pillai have come together for this movie, which is made as tribute to him.

Recently a video taken by Naseeh Ashraf, a youngster hailing from Perumpilavu went viral across social media platforms. In the video, he had alleged that Mohanlal and producer Antony Perumbavoor were funding prostitution in Perumbavoor region for migrant labourers.

Antony Perumbavoor filed a complaint against Naseeh Ashraf on March 6. Police arrested the accused from his house yesterday, on the basis of Antony’s complaint. In the video, Naseeh Ashraf claimed that he had assets valuing around 5 crores and even produced a Rs 500 stamp paper in which he had written that he will grant all his assets to anyone who is daring enough to attack him. Police have recovered the stamp paper and said that he had only Rs 4000 with him.

Naseeh Ashraf’s mother produced a certificate stating that he is mentally unstable and is under treatment for a long time. Police have also informed that the youth talks without any sense. Apparently, he even claimed that he had close relationship with US president Donald Trump and NASA.

Kerala State Awards for the year 2016 was announced yesterday. Kammattipadam actors Vinayakan and Manikandan R Achari won the best actor and best second actor awards respectively.

There were reports that Mohanlal and Vinayakan were considered for the best actor awards in the last round. However, it is informed that the competition was between Vinayakan and Manikandan R Achari for the best actor award. Salim Kumar’s performance in Karutha Joodhan and K Kaladharan in Ottayal Paatha were also considered for the award. Last year’s winner Dulquer Salmaan was also considered at one stage for the best actor.

The jury members finally decided to award Vinayakan as the best actor award while Manikandan was awarded as the second actor. Salim Kumar’s Karutha Joodhan won the awarded for best story. Kaladharan was honoured with a special jury award.

Chalachithra Academy chairman Kamal has said that there was no rule stating that the best actor award should only be given to the lead actor or the protagonist. Producer of Kammattipadam submitted the names of Dulquer Salmaan, Vinayakan and Manikandan Achari as the lead actors. Even if it was submitted that way, the jury has the discretion to select the best actor.

Social media is flooded with posts appreciating the jury’s selections. Past few years, the Kerala State Awards jury have had to face the wrath of the public for overlooking deserving performers. Malayali cyber citizens have stated that the faith in State Awards was restored after yesterday’s announcement.

A ten member jury led by Odisha director A.K. Bir watched 68 feature films, including eight movies for children, before shortlisting 10 movies. The jury members watched five films per day from February.

Director Sundar Das, actress Shanthi Krishna, Priyanandan, Sudevan, PF Mathews, VT Murali, Arun Nambiar, Dr Meena T Pillai and Mahesh Panchu were the jury members.
