Kerala State Film Awards 2016; Vinayakan and Mohanlal in the final round in the best actor category

The Kerala State Film Awards for 2016 will be announced today evening. According to latest reports, Mohanlal and Vinayakan have entered the final list and are the top two contenders in the best actor category.

Mohanlal is considered for his performance in Oppam. He played a blind lift operator who is on the run to protect a girl from serial killer. Oppam’s Jayaraman was Mohanlal’s first full fledged role as a blind person in his three decade long career. He garnered widespread appreciation for his performance in the movie.

Vinayakan is competing for his portrayal of Ganga in Kammattipadam. Though the hero of the movie was Dulquer Salmaan, it was Vinayakan who won all the applause. He delivered an outstanding performance as Ganga. It was complex character with many shades. Kammattipadam, directed by Rajeev Ravi was a coming of age story of a group of gangsters. Vinayakan got into the skin of the character appearing in three different looks. It was one of the best performances by any actor in recent memory.

Both the actors deserve the award for their earnest performances. Last few years, the jury have surprised the public by awarding actors who were not initially in the picture. Let’s hope only deserving performers win the honours.

Director Sundar Das, actress Shanthi Krishna, Priyanandan, Sudevan, PF Mathews, VT Murali, Arun Nambiar, Dr Meena T Pillai and Mahesh Panchu are the jury members.

1971 : Beyond Borders fails to beat The Great Father

The big Ms of Mollywood are all set to lock horns this summer. Mammootty’s The Great Father is scheduled to release for March 30 while Mohanlal’s 1971: Beyond Borders will hit screens on April 7.

Both the movies are eagerly awaited by the fans. In the current scenario, there is a tough competition between big star movies even with the views count. Though it looks less important from the outset, it can have great impact on the publicity of a movie.

Mammootty’s The Great Father teaser was released to overwhelming response in social media. It clocked millions of views in a matter of few hours and is currently the most watched teaser in Malayalam cinema history.

1971 Beyond Borders teaser, released on March 2, was expected to beat TGF’s views but has failed to do so by a big margin. While TGF teaser fetched 15 lakh views in just seven hours, the Mohanlal starrer has only managed to clock 13 lakh views even after five days. Both the teasers were released directly on Facebook in the superstars’ official pages.

We will have to watch if this can have any sort of impact in the box office collections of the movie. TGF, directed by debutant Haneef Adeni is a revenge thriller. The Mohanlal starrer, directed by Major Ravi is a war drama based on the 1971 war between India and Pakistan.

Great comeback for Roopesh Peethambaran in Oru Mexican Aparatha

Great comeback for Roopesh Peethambaran in Oru Mexican Aparatha

Debutant Tom Emmatty’s campus political drama Oru Mexican Aparatha has opened to massive response from the youngsters. The movie is running with packed audience in all the release centres thanks to the positive word of mouth.

Tovino Thomas played the lead role in this movie. As usual his towering screen presence complimented his decent performance. But it was Neeraj Madhav and Roopesh Peethambaran who stole the show. Neeraj Madhav has shown his acting skills in movies like Apothecary and Madhuranaranga, but after that he mostly played sidekick roles. OMA had him in a solid role and he delivered a very matured and controlled performance.

Roopesh Peethambaran was a revelation as the cunning and clever KSQ leader. OMA is his comeback movie as an actor after a gap of 22 long years. Roopesh was last seen before the camera in Mohanlal’s cult blockbuster Sphadikam, where he played the iconic character Aadu Thoma’s younger part. He has also directed two movies, Theevram starring Dulquer Salmaan and You Too Brutus.

Roopesh worked hard to play his character in the movie. He stunned the industry insiders with his amazing physical transformation to play his part in OMA. He is almost unrecognizable in the promo song ‘Katta Kalip’ and the actual movie. He lost around 20 kgs prior to the shoot of the movie and that shows his hardwork. All that hard work has not gone in vain as he is getting widespread appreciation for his performance in the movie.

Looking forward to more from this wonderful actor.
