Angamaly Diaries- So far, the best of 2017

Its been three months into 2017 and Malayalam cinema has already witnessed some quality movies. 2016 was a landmark year for Malayalam cinema but the cinema strike towards the end maligned a great commercial season.

However, the strike could not affect the spirit of Mollywood and that is ostensible from the kind of movies that we got to see in the first two months. Jomonte Suvisheshangal, Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, Ezra, Oru Mexican Aparatha and Angamaly Diaries are the five movies that have earned both critical and commercial appreciation.

Of the five, Jomonte Suvisheshangal, Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol and Ezra have done massive business registering multiple cores at the box office. The most heartening thing was the kind of response that Oru Mexican Aparatha and Angamaly Diaries received from the audience.

Both the movies do not boast of big names in the cast and crew. Yet, the reception for these movies were overwhelming. If one could rate these movies on the basis of quality, Angamaly Diaries would find the top spot.

Angamaly Diaries, directed by maverick filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery is a kind of movie that is rarely seen in Mollywood. It showcases the culture of a particular region with hardcore realism. The technical values of the movie is nothing short of outstanding.

Climax portion is the highlight of the movie. They have filmed an eleven minute sequence with over 1000 junior artists all in a single shot. Lijo Jose Pellissery and his team’s vision and efforts to coordinate so many artists for a such a lengthy sequence deserves all the appreciation that has been coming their way. Stunning performance of the newcomers is another talking point. The movie features around 86 newcomers but one just cannot make out any fault in their performances.

Some highly exciting movies are lined up for release but as of now, Angamaly Diaries is the best of 2017.

Vaikom Vijayalakshmi sets a new world record

Popular Malayalam playback singer Vaikom Vijayalakshmi has set a world record by playing the instrument Gayathriveena for five hours non-stop, at an event in Kochi.

The talented singer recently called off her wedding after some unacceptable demands by the groom’s side. Not one to go down, the visually-challenged singer set a new world record today. She reportedly played 67 songs including Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi with the Gayathriveena instrument.

She played 12 keerthanas also in the Gayathriveena during the five hour long performance.

I am grateful to God. I could fulfill the dreams of my parents, gurus and well wishers,” Vijayalakshmi said, after achieving the feat. The event organisers confirmed that her name would be suggested for the Limca Book of Records.

Last year, she got engaged to engaged to Santhosh, who is also a musician hailing from Puthiyangadi. They were all set to enter wedlock in March.

After their engagement, Santhosh had asked her not to participate in any programmes and instead asked her to work as a teacher in a music college. He had also accepted to stay in Vijayalakshmi’s home after marriage but later informed her that they will be moving to a relative’s house. This forced Vijayalakshmi to call off the wedding.

Vijayalakshmi was praised for taking a bold decision by not letting go off her career for the sake of a married life. Support flowed in for her from celebrities and social media users.

Attack on actress; There was a conspiracy against me: Dileep

Actor Dileep has been in the news for the last few days in connection with the attack on popular actress in Kochi. Several online medias reported about his involvement in the case forcing him to hit out hard at the media for unnecessarily dragging his name in the case.

Recently, during the audio launch function of his upcoming movie Georgettan’s Pooram, an emotional Dileep said that there was a clear case of conspiracy against him in the case.

He said, “I am attending a public function of many days. I want to share a few things my fans. I was deeply saddened when I heard about the brutal attack on my colleague and even contacted her. However, two days after the incident my name was surfacing in several reports. An English newspaper based in Mumbai initially published the news. They targeted me and falsely reported about my involvement. Soon it was followed by reports from several yellow journalists. I had no idea that I had enemies till I realised that it was a conspiracy and a quotation against me.

He further added, “I respect women a lot. My life is an open book in front of my audience, still I was targeted by the media, they didn’t correct their mistake even after knowing that I was not involved. I promise in the name of God that I am not involved in the abduction case of my colleague.

Who will win the Kerala State best actor award for 2016?

Who will win the Kerala State best actor award for 2016?

It’s that season of the year when the prestigious Kerala State Awards are announced. For the past few years, the State awards has lost it’s value after some controversial decisions by the jury members.

In the past few years, many deserving performers have been overlooked by the jury members and they had to face the wrath of the Malayali audience. The Kerala State Awards for the year 2016 will be announced tomorrow. Let’s hope that deserving performers win the awards and uphold the value of the State awards. Here we take a look at the top contenders and their chances to win the best actor award.

1) Mohanlal

The superstar has three of his movies in the final list- Oppam, Pulimurugan and Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol (MVT). All three movies were like chalk and cheese. While he played a blind lift operator in Oppam, he was seen as a wild hunter in Pulimurugan and a middle aged family man in MVT. His performance in Oppam received rave reviews. It was the first time in his three decade long illustrious career that Mohanlal played a full length blind role. Pulimurugan had him in a different zone as a wild hunter. His performance in the high octane action sequences is the major highlight of the movie. At the age of 56, Mohanlal performed stunts that even the younger generation of actors would not dare to do. Ulahnnan in MVT was a comparatively easier one to perform, a kind of role tailor made for him. So with three solid characters, Mohanlal is definitely one of the strong contenders for the top honour.

2) Dulquer Salmaan

Dulquer Salmaan also has three of his movies in the list- Kali, Kammattipadam and Jomonte Suvisheshangal. Kali had him in the role of an angry young man who gets caught in a perilous situation with his wife. Dulquer did a great job in Kali but his performance was very much underrated. Similar was the case with Kammattipadam when his performance was overshadowed by Vinayakan and Manikandan Achari. Jomonte Suvisheshangal had him in his familiar zone of a guy-next-door but his acting towards the end during the emotional scenes were commendable.

3) Vinayakan

Vinayakan was stunning as Ganga in Kammattipadam. There’s clearly no second thoughts about that. Ganga’s character was no cake walk. It was a very complex character that had many shades to it and it demanded someone who could get into the skin. Vinayakan’s performance was a revelation. It is very unfortunate to realize that Ganga was his first full fledged role despite being in the industry for over two decades. Social media was flooded with appreciation for Vinayakan when he was awarded the best actor in the CPC Awards. Let’s hope the Kerala State Award committe do not turn a blind eye towards him. Nobody would even have a pinch of complaint if Vinayakan wins the top honor.

4) Tovino Thomas

Tovino was outstanding as Thejas Varkey in Guppy. Though it was Master Chethan who had the bulk of the screen time, Tovino with his towering screen presence and histrionics grabbed the eyeballs. Thejas Varkey was caring and egoistic at the same time and Tovino did a great job in performing the role with elan.

5) Fahadh Faasil

Fahadh Faasil had only one release during this period Maheshinte Prathikaram. Fahadh played the title role of Mahesh Bhavana in the movie. He once again showcased his ability to get into the skin of the character and deliver a performance that is always a notch higher. With Maheshinte Prathikaram, it was again proved why Fahadh is a cut above all his contemporaries in terms of acting. He certainly deserves the award for his wonderful performance in MP.

So, we have five top contenders with each of them being deserving candidates. Let’s just hope that the jury makes a wise decision while choosing the winners.

Sruthi Hariharan roped in for Dulquer Salmaan’s Solo

Dulquer Salmaan will soon join the second schedule of his upcoming movie with director Bejoy Nambiar in Kochi. We had earlier reported that it is a bilingual made in Tamil and Malayalam.

The director had informed that the movie will feature five female leads. Model turned actress Arthi Venkatesh and Ann Augustine were already part of the first schedule. The director has now roped in Sruthi Hariharan, Marathi actress Sai Tamahankar and Asha Jairam for the other three roles. Sruthi debuted in Malayalam through Cinema Company but was noted for her performance in Kannada superhit movie Lucia.

Solo is reportedly an anthology of five stories. Apart from the lead actors, the supporting actors will be different for both Tamil and Malayalam versions.

Along with Dulquer and the five ladies, Manoj K Jayan, Bollywood actor Prakash Belawadi and filmmaker Quashiq Mukherjee are also part of the cast. Thaikkudam Bridge fame Govind Menon and Siddharth Menon are also acting in the movie.

Both Bejoy Nambiar and Dulquer Salmaan had earlier mentioned that Solo will not be an usual run of the mill kind of movie. It belongs to multiple genres and will have different style and treatment.

Solo is produced by Bejoy Nambiar’s home production banner Getaway Films and Abaam Movies.

Rishi Raj Singh IPS is all praise for Veeram Malayalam movie

Director Jayaraj’s latest release Veeram has successfully entered it’s second week of theatrical run. It continues to do good business across all the release centres. Critics rated the movie high for it’s novelty in treatment and presentation style.

Recently, Rishi Raj Singh IPS after watching the movie posted a detailed review about the movie in his official Facebook page. He was all praise for the presentation and the technical brilliance.

His post reads,

“VEERAM’- A tale of gore and deceit – Film review by Rishi Raj Singh IPS

Making a film about folklores cuts both ways ; it serves well with the audience as they need not stretch their imagination to unknot the intricacies of story but at the same time familiarity may breed boredom soon.

The story of Chandu Chekaver ;a warrior from ‘Vadakkan Pattukal’ [north Malabar] of Kerala belonging to 16th century is replete with familiarity in every house of Kerala.

Fortunately for audience Jayaraj ;the famous Malayalam film director has kept the pace of the film faster and crisp. movie does succeed in making spectators sit tight at the edges of their chairs.

Film’s technical brilliance has helped it in making an all round impact thus compelling audience to look further curiously. Specially its background music prepared by Jeff Rona, probably kept deliberately high has a mesmerizing grip on onlookers. razor sharp editing and duration of film kept only for 104 minutes have only succeeded in complimenting film’s earlier mentioned qualities. Movie sets in riots of colours. Colour grading supervised by Jeff Olm is simply vivid and marvellous.

we come across some of the finest acting display. Kunaal Kapur as a spurned lover and betrayer excels. Himarsha as ‘Unniyarcha’ fuming with anger as to take revenge at the death of her brother ‘Aromal’ leaves lasting impact. Divina Thakore [Kutti Mani] meandering through acute guilt and restlessness sparkles in her role. Shivjit Nambiar as Aromal succeeds in displaying innocence though placed at wrong hands.

Nevertheless Dubbing could have been better. Also English sub titles must have been added in its Malayalam version.

Movie shall definitely ignite curiosity and liking for ‘Kalaripayattu’ [ a martial art ; originated from Kerala] in the hearts of audience which has been showcased brilliantly. Allen Poppleton’s choreography in general and filming of ‘Kalaripayattu’ scenes in particular leaves us spellbound. Make-up by Trefor Proud speaks class and quality. It shows clearly that actors have undergone exhaustive practice and training sessions before real shoot.

Film is shot mostly outdoors at Ajanta Ellora caves at Aurangabad[ Maharashtra], Agra [ Uttar Predesh] and at Thiruvanathapuram [Kerala]

‘Veeram’ has been the most expensive film ever made in malayalam ; made on a budget touching about nearly 35 crores [ 350 millions] Film is made in three languages; Malayalam,Hindi and English.

The film has an uncanny similarity with Shakspeare’s great tragedy ‘Macbeth’ which is purely innocuous.

Must watch for those who clamour for novelty in subject and presentation of a film in an offbeat and exclusive manner.”

Chandramohan Pillai and Pradeep Rajan of Chandrakala Arts jointly produced this big budget movie

Prithviraj will have a grey shaded role in Detroit Crossing

We had earlier reported that Prithviraj will be doing a crossover venture Detroit Crossing, directed by newbie Nirmal Sahadev. According to latest reports, the movie will start rolling in June this year.

The movie is set in Detroit, Michigan and will showcase the lives of the immigrant community. It will be a neo-noir kind of movie with lot of violence. The city will have a lot of importance in the plot.
Prithvi will be playing a member of a Tamil street gang in the movie.

In a recent interview, the director spilled more beans about the movie. Apparently, Detroit Crossing is inspired by real-life situations. It is a crime drama where Prithviraj will be seen in a grey shaded role.

Mamta Mohandas is playing a equally important role in the movie. She has a strong and mature character that has several shades and layers. Since the movie is based on Tamil street gangs, it will also feature prominent actors like Sampath Raj and Ashwin Kumar in pivotal roles.
