Great start for Mollywood in 2017

Last year, our industry witnessed some big blockbusters, terrific performances, ‘Pulimurugan’, and even the uninvited cinema strike. The strike towards the fag end of the year spoilt the party for the industry who had set an eye on the Christmas season to cash in big. Liberty Basheer and co. ensured there was no release during the holidays. Finally, it took some filmy heroics and efforts from Dileep to bring curtains to the strike and the Exhibitors Federation.

This year, first Malayalam release was Dr Biju’s Kaadu Pookunna Neram on January 6. The movie that has won several accolades in international film festivals was released in limited screens. That same weekend, two other movies Kaviyude Osyathu and Godsay hit screens, but could not make a mark in the box office.

First major release of the year was on January 19. Dulquer Salmaan’s Jomonte Suvisheshangal directed by veteran Sathyan Anthikad had a great opening in the box office. Dulquer’s youth fan base and Sathyan Anthikad’s popularity among the family audience has done wonders in the box office. The movie raked in Rs 2.71 crores on the opening day.

Mohanlal’s Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol was released on the next day on January 20. Directed by Vellimoonga fame Jibu Jacob, MVT was released amid good hype. Upon release, critics and common audience praised the movie unanimously. Families took a particular liking for the movie thronging the theatres in large numbers. Opening day numbers for the movie amounted up to Rs 2.62 crores.

Both Jomonte Suvisheshangal and Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol recently crossed the 30 crore mark. While the former took 26 days to enter the club, MVT took only 21 days to reach the milestone.

Jayasurya’s Fukri directed by Siddique was released on February 3. Clichéd storyline and outdated treatment did no good for the movie, as theatres witnessed a steady dip in the audience count in the first weekend itself.

Prithviraj’s highly anticipated horror thriller, Ezra was released on February 10. The movie had massive expectations majorly due to the impressive promo teasers. Publicised as the first authentic horror thriller recent years in Mollywood, Ezra could lived up to the expectations. Theatres are witnessing unprecedented rush for a Prithviraj movie. Ezra became the biggest opener for Prithviraj with collections of 2.61 crores. According to reports from trade sources, the movie has already crossed the 10 crore mark and will most probably end up as the highest grossing Prithviraj starrer.

This is a perfect start for Mollywood in 2017. Three of the four major releases have already minted big bucks at the box office. Some highly anticipated movies are lined up for next month. Oru Mexican Aparatha, Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Angamaly Diaries and Mammootty’s The Great Father will hit screens in March.

Tovino underwent training for over a month for his role in Godha : Basil Joseph

Tovino Thomas is currently busy with the promotions of his next release Oru Mexican Aparatha, directed by debutant Tom Emmatty. Meanwhile, his upcoming movie Godha is also in the final stages of post production.

Godha is directed by Kunjiramayanam fame Basil Joseph. Tovino is playing the role of Anjaneya Das, a wrestler in the movie. The director in a recent chat session with Onlookers Media shared how he zeroed in on Tovino to play the lead role in Godha.

I was impressed with Tovino’s performance in the comic role in You Too Brutus and wanted to work with him. That’s how he was selected for Godha. His well built physique was also a major factor. He underwent wrestling training for over one month under a professional wrestler from Fort Kochi.

Like other language movies, we don’t have enough time and budget to undergo physical training for six months. Tovino did all his physical workouts in between his busy shoot schedule. Sometimes, he comes after shooting for Guppy and trains during the night time.”

That speaks volumes about Tovino’s dedication to the craft. He is currently one of the most promising new generation actors and his rise to this level did not happen overnight. Being from a non filmy background, he had to go the hard way for succeeding in such a competitive industry.

Unlike his contemporaries, Tovino has not yet been typecast. He has done a wide variety of characters in such a short period. He started as a villain in ABCD, has played a comedy role in You Too Brutus, an intense portrayal of the one side lover in Ennu Ninte Moideen, a handsome villain in Style, a grey shaded role in Guppy and many such variety of characters. In his next release Oru Mexican Aparatha he will be seen as a student leader from the Left front.

We wish a very best of luck for the success of Oru Mexican Aparatha and Godha.

Roopesh Peethambaran’s blunt reply to a threat comment

Roopesh Peethambaran is returning back to face the camera after a long gap of 22 long years, through debutant Tom Emmatty’s Oru Mexican Aparatha. Roopesh was last seen as an actor in Mohanlal’s cult blockbuster Sphadikam, where he played the iconic character Aadu Thoma’s younger part. He has also directed two movies, the Dulquer Salmaan starrer Theevram and the multistarrer You Too Brutus.

Tovino Thomas is playing the lead role in Oru Mexican Aparatha. His character is a student leader from the left front. Roopesh will be seen as the antagonist, representing the opposition. Official trailer for the movie was released recently to great response from the viewers.

Roopesh Peethambaran recently posted a character poster in his official Facebook page. One of his followers made a threatening comment on the post, saying that the actor will not be spared if a drop of blood is shed from SFI’s members (in the movie). Roopesh unfazed by the threat replied back with his address. He also updated a seperate post with the screenshot of the comment by adding a caption,

When I say don’t mix politics and cinema, this is what I mean!!!
Shame on these kind of people who do stunts to get attention!!

The makers fearing such reactions have made it clear that the political parties shown in the movie are SFY and KSQ. Roopesh has been getting appreciation for taking a bold stand on such a critical issue. It is very pathetic that people are unable to draw a line between real life and reel life.

The actor had earlier stunned the audience and industry insiders with his amazing physical transformation. He had lost around 20 kgs to play his part in the movie.

Yuvi, as fondly called in the cricketing world, fought cancer to help India win the World Cup in 2011. He is seen up as an inspiration by many for putting up a brave fight against a life threatening disease to return back to play for the country. At 35, he is still representing the country in the limited overs format.

Interestingly, Ranbir is currently working on another biopic. He is playing the lead in Sanjay Dutt’s biopic directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani. The actor recently put on a few kilos to achieve Sanjay’s looks for the movie.
