Vappachi didn’t raise me as a rich kid: Dulquer Salmaan

Dulquer Salmaan has kick started 2017 successfully with his latest outing Jomonte Suvisheshangal. In fact, it was Jomonte Suvisheshangal that officially started the release of mainstream Malayalam movies after the cinema strike. The movie is doing good business in all the centres. Directed by veteran Sathyan Anthikad, the movie revolves around a rich businessman and his spendthrift son.

Recently in a chat session with Club FM UAE, Dulquer opened up more about how his parents raised him. “Though I was born in a well to do family, vappachi didn’t raise me as a rich kid. Even my mom was like that. They were very concerned about spending money and gave me money only for genuine needs. There was no question of lavishness. During my studies, I was given enough money for my semester fees and other needs. During my days in the US, I used to long for super bikes. I owned one only after I started living on my own.“.

He also revealed about his experience working in food courts during his college days to meet his expenses. “When I was in college, a dollar’s value was around 46-47 rupees. I was very apprehensive about troubling my family for my college expenses. So I worked in a food court to meet my expenses. During those days, I lived with a minimum budget and had many memorable experiences. But today, I can sustain with any budget and change myself according to the situation.

Now we know where all that humility came from. Even after becoming a celebrity, he mostly stayed away from the media and made his presence felt only through his movies.

Mammootty or Dulquer Salmaan; Amal Neerad’s comparison

Stylish filmmaker Amal Neerad is currently busy with the post productions of his upcoming movie CIA aka Comrade In America with Dulquer Salmaan in the lead.

Amal Neerad is one of the very few filmmakers who have had the chance to work with the most popular celebrity father-son duo in Mollywood, Mammootty and Dulquer Salmaan. Amal Neerad made his debut as a filmmaker in 2007 through Mammootty’s Big B.

During a recent interview with Times Of India, when Amal Neerad was asked to draw a comparison between Dulquer and Mammootty, he said, “Mammukka, or any senior actor for that matter, brings with him years of experience and he takes a film beyond our expectations, every time. Dulquer, on the other hand, is more like a friend. However, he has done more films than me and is thus more experienced than me. I consider myself a juvenile, amateur director still. It’s not humility but the truth.

CIA is Amal Neerad’s second movie with Dulquer. He has earlier worked with him in Kallante Bharya in 5 Sundarikal, an anthology of five movies.

CIA has Dulquer Salmaan playing the character of Aji Mathew, a Pala based youngster who travels to the US to meet his girlfriend. Debutante Karthika Muraleedharan is playing the female lead in this movie which also features Soubin Shahir, Jinu Jospeh, John Vijay and some foreign actors in supporting roles.

The movie is written by Shibin Francis who had scripted last year’s superhit movie Pavada that had Prithviraj in the lead. Cinematography is handled by debutant Ranadive, a former associate of Amal Neerad while Gopi Sunder has scored the music.

Amal Neerad and Anwar Rasheed have produced the movie under their banners Amal Neerad Productions and Anwar Rasheed Entertainment.

Indian cinema’s one of the biggest superstar Shah Rukh Khan shares a very close relationship with Kerala and the artists here. He is a regular visitor to the State mostly as ‘the Bollywood presence’ in the award nights. Recently, SRK revealed names of his favourite five Malayalis.

Mammootty, Mohanlal, KU Mohanan, Santhosh Sivan and Priyadarshan are his five favourites.

I should learn the language before acting in a Malayalam movie. I would love to act in Malayalam. Some great movies are born here. There are many brilliant technicians in Mollywood. KU Mohanan is the cinematographer in my latest movie Raees. He works very calmly without any fuss. I know two Mohans here, him and Mohanlal. Both of them are geniuses in their respective fields. I have interacted with Mammootty, Mohanlal, Priyadarshan, Sabu Cyril and Santhosh Sivan many times. The shoot period at which a Malayalam movie is completed is just amazing. I have talked with them about this. It was Gauthami while acting with me in Trimurti who showed me the world of Malayalam movies. The movies here are so beautiful dealing with a variety of stories. I spend time whenever I visit Kerala for some programmes. I always love to spend my holidays here“, SRK said.

The King Khan’s latest release Raees continues to do good bussiness in the box office. The movie released on Republic Day, has already crossed the 100 crore mark. SRK has played the titular character of a gangster who is involved in bootlegging business in Gujarat. The actor’s power packed performance has won him rave reviews with critics calling it as his best in recent years.

Other movies where Mammootty played a police officer are Yavanika, Kariyila Kaatu Pole, Rakshasarajavu, Roudram etc.

Debut director Shamdat is noted for his cinematography in movies like Ritu, Seniors, and the recently released Kattappanayile Rithwik Roshan. He has worked with Kamal Hassan in movies like Uttama Villain and the yet to be released Vishwaroopam 2. He has also worked with Mammootty in two of hisl movies movies, Pramani and Venicile Vyapari.

He is currently shooting for 7th Day fame Shyam Dhar’s untitled movie in which he is playing a Idduki native who comes to Kochi as a teacher trainer.
