Darbar Review: Rajinikanth as a badass cop lifts this film single-handedly!

Darbar Review: Rajinikanth as a badass cop lifts this film single-handedly!

How often have we seen Rajinikanth lifting films just with his sheer presence. The AR Murugadoss directorial ‘Darbar’ is the most recent example. On paper, it has a decent screenplay with plenty of mass moments, stuffed in songs, a weak villain, an even weaker female lead and zero space for logic. But since Rajinikanth is at the centre of action, he makes sure that all eyes are glued on him and we hardly think about the other shortcomings.

So Aditya Arunchalam is a badass cop who is on a killing spree that sends chills down the biggest of dons in Mumbai. He is desperately on the look for someone. We are then taken to a flashback where we are shown how he landed in the city and who he is madly searching for. During his stint in Mumbai to wipe out the drug mafia, Aditya locks horns with some kingpins which throws his life upside down. How he overcomes a mental break-down and avenges for his loss is what the film is all about.

Darbar Movie Review

Murugadoss’ screenplay has glimpses of some brainy episodes but not like those in ‘Thuppakki’, which is arguably his best film till date. Guess the director was more relaxed since he had Rajinikanth as the lead. It is like my hero is Rajini so people won’t prod over logic or anything. We do.

The 70-year-old man’s energy is awe-inspiring. Just take the example of him and Nayanthara dancing together. The lady tries hard to match but is found wanting in front of his sheer energy and style. He carries so much swag even in a casual walk that you can’t help but watch in awe. The man even dares to display his bare body and flex the muscles. However, some things are beyond his reach, like his enunciation, which has clearly been affected. It is an evident signs of aging. Knowing him, he might work on that and come out even better.

Ever since Neelambari of ‘Padayappa’, there has not been a single villain who has been able to stand up to Rajinikanth. Suniel Shetty’s Hari Chopra here hardly makes a claim despite all the build up he gets. Murugadoss was once known for sketching strong villain characters but of late, his writing has taken a severe hit.

In an almost one-man show, only Nivetha Thomas managed to impress. The dad-daughter chemistry between her and Rajinikanth was wonderful. The tiny bits in the ‘Thara Maara’ song was lovely. Yogi Babu’s one-liners work and it was a pleasant surprise to see him take digs at Rajinikanth continuously, including his age. Nayanthara in ‘Darbar’ is just like Simran and Trisha in ‘Petta’. She hardly has anything to do except for that one mandatory song that came out of nowhere.

Santosh Sivan’s cinematography is rich, colourful and everything that a mass-masala entertainer that this demands. The veteran knows how to enhance the superstar with well placed bottom angle shots. Worth a mention are the intro fight sequence, the ‘Thani Vazhi’ segment and the impressive song-cum-fight sequence in railway station.

Anirudh is an ideal choice for superstar films but his work in ‘Darbar’ is definitely not his best. The songs except ‘Chumma Kizhi’ and ‘Thani Vazhi’ don’t work. But that kickass ‘Thalaiva’ background score is worth all the roars. I wonder if he has given credits to Deva because that tune is straight out of the iconic ‘Annamalai’ score.

In a nutshell, ‘Darbar’ starts from where ‘Petta’ left in terms of ‘Rajinifying’ and how the storyline hardly has anything fresh to offer. It is nothing but the celebration of superstar and his glorified mannerisms.

Anjaam Pathiraa: An exhilarating edge-of-the-seat thriller

Anjaam Pathiraa: An exhilarating edge-of-the-seat thriller

‘Anjaam Pathiraa’ directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas is a crime thriller centred around a series of killings. We have Anwar Hussain, a psychologist who wishes to pursue a career in criminology. He voluntarily helps the Kochi police department in criminal cases that will be helpful for his PhD studies. The film starts off with Anwar meeting a serial killer Ripper Ravi. Director Midhun smartly plays the cards here. He knows the basic rule of a thriller film – deliver the unexpected. So when we are told that Anwar is about to meet a dangerous killer who has murdered 14 people, we, as a normal audience, will be expecting a well-built, strong person accompanied by a mysterious background score. But out comes Indrans with a cheerful smile. That is like an indicator to what is to come. Keep expecting the unexpected.

So, Kochi city is terrorized by abduction and series of brutal killings of policemen. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is formed to crack the case and find the criminal. Anwar Hussain is also part of the team. From here, it is a thrilling cat and mouse game, where the killer is on the winning side on most instances.

Anjaam Pathiraa Malayalam Movie Review

Midhun has smartly scripted a thriller with zero space for unwanted drama and the so-called commercial elements like romance track or songs. Even though Kunchacko Boban’s Anwar Hussain is the lead man, there is hardly any heroism or extra build up for him. He is just like any other person in the SIT.

That is another striking aspect of the film. Usually, in investigative thriller films, there’s a template filmmakers tend to follow. There will be a highly intelligent officer (obviously the protagonist), couple of obedient subordinates, an egoistic, nauseating colleague — in most cases, a superior — and at times, even a naive officer who will be reserved as the scapegoat.

‘Anjaam Pathiraa’ differs as the makers have opted a sensible treatment. The SIT members are equally efficient and devoted in their mission. Occasionally, there comes an aggressive superior but that is justifiable considering the pressure situation the force is under. However, there are some stereotypes like Sreenth Bhasi’s character Andrews. It is a typical portrayal of a hacker — the spectacled, bearded guy with an urban slang. Also, the flashback segment had a lack of freshness. Amidst all this, Midhun has also tried to convey his progressive thoughts through scenes like a wife driving the car with her husband sitting beside her, Unnimaya casually sipping a glass of beer with her colleagues and the final moment of glory where she comes in slow-motion.

Anjaam Pathiraa Malayalam Movie Review

Performance wise, Unnimaya, Jinu Joseph, Abhiram, Harikrishnan and Sreenath Bhasi have all done justice to their roles. A thriller film works only when the audience are able to feel the lead actor’s tension and Kunchacko Boban’s thoroughly refined performance works big-time. Special mention to actors like Jaffer Idukki and Indrans, who deliver splendid performances despite the minimal screen time.

Midhun Manuel Thomas got half the job done when he assembled an accomplished technical crew. The talented trio of Sushin Shyam, Shyju Khalid and Saiju Sreedharan uplift the film with their brilliant works. Shyju’s handling of the night visuals is very impressive as he shows the length and breadth of Kochi city from top angels. Sushin Shyam’s terrific background score and the atmospheric sound design by Vishnu Govind and Sree Sankar amplifies the thrill factor immensely. Saiju Sreedharan’s edits are in proper sync as he doesn’t rely on flash cuts but smart tension building.

Anjaam Pathiraa Malayalam Movie Review

Over the last few years, Malayalam cinema has had a real dearth in well-made thriller films. So in that sense, ‘Anjaam Pathiraa’ puts an end to a long wait. Director Midhun Manuel’s huge leap from comedy and feel-good films to a thriller like this deserves a big round of appreciation.
