Driving Licence declared a blockbuster after 20 days of theatrical run!

Prithviraj-Suraj Venjaramoodu starrer ‘Driving Licence’ has been declared a blockbuster after just 20 days of theaterical run. The film has earned around Rs 27 crore from its worldwide run. It is learnt that the Kerala gross so far is Rs 19.40 crore and from Rest of India (RoI) centres its Rs 0.85 crore. The film had done extremely in overseas centres with a gross of Rs 6.8 crore.

Hitting screens on December 20, ‘Driving Licence’ had to compete with other Christmas releases like ‘Prathi Poovankozhi’, ‘My Santa’, ‘Thrissur Pooram’ and ‘Valiya Perunnal’ at the Kerala box office. The film still managed to excel at all the centres courtesy the positive word of mouth right from the first day.

‘Driving Licence’ is directed by Lal Jr and scripted by Sachy. Critics rated the film as a well-made commercial entertainer and praise the performance of its two lead actors – Prithviraj and Suraj Venjaramoodu. The film has a very interesting storyline centred around a film star and his ardent fan, who is a motor vehicle inspector. As circumstances turn out, the two lock horns and they constantly try to outsmart each other. It is their clash of ego and power abuse that take the film forward. Since it is an universal plot, several top stars from other languages are in talks to acquire the remake rights.

First schedule wrapped up for Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan

The first schedule of Mani Ratnam’s ambitious project ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ has been wrapped up in Thailand. Karthi, Jayaram, Jayaram Ravi and Aishwarya Lekshmi were some of the actors who participated in the first leg of shoot. The cast also includes Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Trisha, Vikram Prabhu, Sarath Kumar, Prabhu, Kishore, Rahman, Lal and Ashwin Kakumanu.

‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is actually a historical Tamil novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. In 5 volumes, or about 2400 pages, it tells the story of early days of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the great Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola I. Mani Ratnam has adapted its screenplay along with Siva Anand and Kumaravel. Jayamohan has penned the dialogues. The makers are planning to release the film in two parts.

DOP Ravi Varman, editor Sreekar Prasad and composer AR Rahman form the core technical crew. Mani Ratnam’s own banner Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions are collaborating for this mega budget film’s production.

Dulquer Salmaan to do the honours for Prithviraj’s new film

The camaraderie of young generation of Malayalam actors is extremely heartening. Stars these days have no qualms in sharing each other’s promo materials through their social media handles. On that note, we just learnt that Dulquer Salmaan will be releasing the teaser of Prithviraj’s new film ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’. The teaser will be shared online tomorrow (January 11) at 5 PM.

‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ is written and directed by Sachy, whose debut film ‘Anarkali’ also had the same two lead actors. It is produced by director Ranjith and PM Sasidharan under the banner of Gold Coin Motion Picture Company. The film is centred around a conflict between a police constable and a retired solider over a legal issue.

Biju Menon plays Ayappan Nair, a middle-aged police constable posted in Attapadi and Prithviraj essays the part of Koshy Kurian, a havildar who is retired from army after 16 years of service. Ranjith essays the part of Prithviraj’s father. Anna Reshma Rajan, Siddique, Anu Mohan, Sabumon Abdusamad, Anil Nedumangad, Shaju Sreedhar and many others are part of the supporting cast.

Shoot for Dhanush’s new film ‘Karnan’ recently commenced in Tirunelveli. It is written and directed by ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ fame. Malayali actors Rajisha Vijayan and Lal are essaying crucial roles in the film. Kalipuli S Thanu is producing it under the banner of V Creations.

Recently, actor Lal took to his social media handle to share a photo of him and Dhanush from the film’s sets. While Lal’s character in the film has been named as Yemen, Dhanush plays the titular role Karnan. Yogi Babu, Azhagar Perumal and Natty aka Natarajan Subramanian are also part of the supporting cast. The film has got a strong technical crew as well comprising of DOP Theni Eswar and composer Santhosh Narayanan.

‘Karnan’ is said to be based on the Manjolai Massacre or Thamirabani massacre of 23 July 1999. 17 labourers, including two women and a two-year-old child, got killed when they dived into the river to escape police lathi charge. Mari Selvaraj, whose debut film ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ got widespread appreciation, is expected to deliver another powerful film.

Amidst huge expectations, Rajinikanth starrer ‘Darbar’ hit screens worldwide yesterday. As expected, the film has taken a massive opening at all the centres. The official opening day figures from the Tamil Nadu box office is yet to be out. However, in Chennai city gross, ‘Darbar’ has failed to beat Vijay’s ‘Sarkar’ and the superstar’s own ‘2.0’. But it is worth a mention that Abirami Mega Mall, a big multiplex in the city isn’t in operation currently. So that has had a impact on the figures.

‘Darbar’ has opened to largely positive reviews, with popular opinion being, ‘it’s a complete Rajinikanth show and a treat for the fans’. Director AR Murugadoss has followed the template rule of helming a superstar film and it making it as a crowd pleaser, which has paid off to a large extent.

After the sensational success of the first single ‘Kamini’, the makers of ‘Anugraheethan Antony’ have released the next song online. It is a lovely track featuring a girl kid and tow dogs. Arun Muraleedharan has composed the song and lyrics is penned by Manu Manjith. Anannya Nair and Kaushik Menon have lent their voices for the track with backing vocals by Nia K Nambiyar and Rakesh Kishore.

‘Anugraheethan Antony’ stars Sunny Wayne and ’96’ fame Gouri Kishan in the leads. The film has a bunch of newcomers in the crew. It is directed by Prince Joy and scripted by Naveen T Manilal. Jishnu R Nair and Aswin Prakash have penned the story. Siddique, Indrans, Jaffer Idukki, Manikandan Achari, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Baiju and Muthumani are part of the supporting cast.

On the technical front, Selvakumar is the cinematographer and Arjun Ben, the editor. Music department is being handled by Arun Muraleedharan. M Shijith is producing the film under the banner of Lekhsya Entertainments.

We had recently reported about Jayaram starring in a Sanskrit film named ‘Namo’. First look of the film was released last day by Manju Warrier through their social media handle. Jayaram has undergone a major physical transformation for this film. He has shaved his head completely besides losing around 20 kgs of weight.

‘Namo’ is directed by Vijeesh Mani, who is best known for his film ‘Vishwaguru’ that was made and released in just 51 hours and 2 minutes. He had created a new Guinness World Record with that film. The director had also made another film named ‘Netaji’ in Irula language with producer Gokulam Gopalan as the lead actor. The film also won a Guinness award, this time for being the first tribal language film.

Vijeesh Mani’s new Sanskrit film ‘Namo’ is based on the friendship between Lord Krishna and Kuchela or Sudama. Jayaram is playing the role of Kuchelan in it. Sarkar Desai, Mythili Javedkar, Raj and many other actors from across the country are part of the cast. Padma Shri award winner Anup Jalota, popularly known as the ‘Bhajan Samraat’ is composing music for the film. Six time National award winner B Lenil is the editor and S Lokanathan is handling the cinematography.

96 Telugu remake: Watch Jaanu teaser here!

’96’, the Tamil blockbuster film starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha is getting remade in Telugu as ‘Jaanu’. Its teaser got release online just a while back. Sharwanand and Samantha are playing the lead roles in the film. C Prem Kumar, who directed ’96’, is helming the Telugu version as well. The director’s touch is very evident as this teaser is almost exactly similar to the Tamil one. Thankfully, Govind Vasantha has composed a new tune rather than reworking on the already popular ‘Kaathale Kaathale’ song.

’96’ is unarguably one of the most sensational blockbusters in South Indian cinema in recent years. The film tells a poignant tale of two childhood sweethearts who get to meet after two decades for a school reunion. From the teaser, ‘Jaanu’ looks like a scene by scene remake of ’96’. Since the story has an universal appeal, the Telugu version is also expected to do well. Gouri G Kishan, who played Trisha’s younger version in the original, is reprising the same role.

Similarly, the same technical team from ’96’ comprising of DOP Mahendiran Jayaraju, composer Govind Vasantha and editor Praveek KL have been retained. Dil Raju of Sri Venkateswara Creations is producing ‘Jaanu’.

Asif Ali-Rajisha Vijayan starrer Ellam Sheriyakum is a political film

As reported by us earlier, Asif Ali and Rajisha Vijayan are coming together once again after the superhit success of ‘Anuraga Karikkin Vellam’. Their new film titled ‘Ellam Sheriyakum’ will be directed by Jibu Jacob. We hear that it is a political film with a satirical tone. Three newcomers Sharis, Shalbin and Nebin are scripting the film that is set to go on floors in March.

‘Ellam Sheriyakum’ is director Jibu Jacob’s second film with Asif, as he had played a cameo role in the director’s superhit debut film, ‘Vellimoonga’, starring Biju Menon in the lead. This new film is being produced by Thomas Thiruvalla and Dr Paul Varghese under the banner of Dr Paul’s Entertainment.

On the technical front, Sreejith Nair will be cranking the camera. Music department will be handled by veteran Ouseppachan and Sooraj ES is trusted with the edits. Central Pictures will be releasing the film in Kerala.
