Peranbu tops IMDb top 10 films of the year; Lucifer is the only Malayalam film in the list

Internet Movie Date base, popularly known as IMDb is an online database of information related to world films, television programs, home videos and video games and internet streams. Every year, they come up with an annual list of the best films and shows released. It is determined by customers who rank films and TV shows on a ten-point scale. The list of top 10 Indian films of 2019 was released last day.

Mammootty starrer ‘Peranbu’ topped the list with a rating of 9.2. The Ram directorial was a widely acclaimed film that went on to be screened in various international festivals across the world. Mohanlal’s ‘Lucifer’ is the only Malayalam film in the list. With an IMDb rating of 7.5, the Prithviraj directorial is the only Malayalam film among the list. Interestingly, except ‘Peranbu’ and ‘Lucifer’, all the other 8 films are from Hindi languages.

Sun TV bags Darbar satellite rights for huge price!

Rajinikanth’s ‘Darbar’ is getting ready for theatrical release next month during the Pongal holidays. Written and directed by AR Murugadoss, ‘Darbar’ is actually a cop action thriller that has the veteran star in a police officer’s role. Expectations are huge as Rajinikanth is playing a cop’s role after over two decades.

Trade circles have pinned high hopes on the film as they will be hoping to kick start the new year with a blockbuster. Recently, the film’s satellite rights were bagged by market leader Sun TV for a huge undisclosed amount. It is worth a mention that the superstar’s next film with director Siva is produced by Sun Pictures.

Darbar has Nayanthara as the female lead. Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty plays the antagonist role. The supporting cast also comprises of Nivetha Thomas, Prateik Babbar, Sriman, Yogi Babu, cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s Yograj Singh and many others. Lyca Productions is producing the film.

Malayalam film personalities support anti-CAA protests!

The controversial Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) has seen widespread protests across the country. After police entered the Jamia Millia Islamia university in New Delhi and attacked the innocent students, the issue caught worldwide attention. Student community from universities across the nation have now joined in and have been fighting from the forefront against the CAA.

Film personalities have also come out expressing their solidarity to the students and thereby expressing their dissent at the CAA. From Malayalam film industry, many prominent voices have supported anti-CAA protests

Parvathy, Rima Kallingal, Aashiq Abu, Zakariya Mohammed, Sunny Wayne, Prithviraj, Harshad, Savitri Sreedharan, Amala Paul, Maala Parvathi, Muhsin Parari and Geetu Mohandas were among the first to raise their voice. They were then followed by Mammootty, Rajisha Vijayan, Kunchacko Boban, Indrajith, Soubin Shahir, Asif Ali, Dulquer Salmaan, Tovino Thomas, Anaswara Rajan, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Nivin Pauly and many others.

‘Sudani From Nigeria’ team who won the National award for Best Malayalam film have boycotted the event. When the CAB was initially passed by the Rajya Sabha with a majority vote, actress Parvathy took to her Twitter handle to express her dissent. She wrote,

Shiver through the spine. Oh, we cannot be letting this happen! Oh no

Rima Kallingal’s post reads,

With the youngsters who are asking for peace, for justice, for fairness in the land they live. When the mighty, the powerful and the rich look away, the real owners of this land, these kids will look into your eyes and ask the relevant questions.

Vineeth Sreenivasan did not mince words at the ruling government as he wrote,

For u they are a minority. For us they are our brothers and sisters. Pls take ur CAB and drive away to a land far far away from us. Please take all ur bills while u go, including the NRC..

Superstar Mammootty has written,

We can forge ahead as a nation only when we rise above caste, creed, religion and other considerations.

Rajinikanth expresses his wish to act as a transgender!

Superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘Darbar’ is getting ready for Pongal release in January. The film’s trailer was released and got great response from the viewers online. Written and directed by AR Murugadoss, ‘Darbar’ is a cop-action thriller set in Mumbai. Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty plays the antagonist in the film. The trailer launch event was held in Mumbai and it was attended by Rajinikanth, Murugadoss, Suniel Shetty and Prateik Babbar.

While speaking to the media, Rajinikanth expressed his desire to act as a transgender. The veteran when asked about a genre he would like to explore, said, “Actually I’ve explored all. It has been 45 years, 160 films. So everything has been covered.” When asked, if there’s still a genre or a role he would want to be cast in, the actor said, ‘A transgender’.

It is worth a mention that ‘Darbar’ has a song rendered by trans-women, which is probably a first in an Indian superstar film. Anirudh Ravichander recorded the song with Hyderabad-based trans women, Chandramukhi, Rachana Mudraboina and Priya Murthi, who are part of a band called Spicy Girls. The film features a scene involving a dance by the transgender community. Composer Anirudh wanted to keep it authentic, so he decided to get trans women to record the song instead of regular playback singers. The song has been recorded in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Joju George starts shooting for Malik

Shoot for director Mahesh Narayanan’s ‘Malik’ has been progressing for the last few months. It is big-scale film starring Fahadh Faasil in the lead. Anto Joseph Film Company is producing the film, which is being made on a huge budget of around Rs 25 crores.

During its official announcement, the film’s cast also had Biju Menon Nimisha Sajayan, Dileesh Pothan, Vinay Forrt and yesteryear actress Jalaja in major roles. However, Biju Menon had to opt out due to date issues. He got replaced by Joju George, who has now joined the team. The excited actor took to his social media handle to inform the same. Joju’s character in ‘Malik’ is expected to be a prominent, performance-oriented one.

‘Malik’ is the sophomore film of Mahesh Narayanan, who made the National award winning ‘Take Off’. Just like his debut film, this one is also based on a real-life incident that occurred few years back in Kerala. The film is conceived as a political thriller that is centred around a sensitive coastal area where there was a resistance against the constant threat of displacement of a minority community. The film will be focussing on the evolution of the coastal area from the 60s to present age.

Besides directing and scripting, Mahesh Narayanan is also editing the film. Sanu John Varughese is the DOP and composer Sushin Shyam are also part of the technical crew. The makers are eyeing an April release next year.

Rakshit Shetty starrer Avane Srimannarayana to have multiple release dates

Kannada superstar Rakshit Shetty’s new film ‘Avane Srimannarayana’ is gearing up to hit screens . The makers have planned it as a multilingual and its releasing in five regional Indian languages – Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. The original Kannada version will be the first to release on December 27, followed by a Telugu release on January 1, 2020. The Tamil and Malayalam versions will release on January 3, 2020. The makers have zeroed in on January 16 for the release of the Hindi version.

Leading distributors in respective territories have bagged the film’s rights. The Malayalam version will be brought to screen by Tomichan Mulakupadam, the producer of blockbuster films like ‘Pulimurugan’ and ‘Ramaleela’.

‘Avane Srimannarayana’ is a cop action flick set in the ’80s in a fictional town called ‘Amaravathi’ in Karnataka. Debutant Sachin Ravi is directing the film. Rakshit Shetty, who has also written the story, will be seen essaying the lead role of a a corrupt police officer. The cast includes Shanvi Srivastava, Achyuth Kumar, Pramod Shetty, and Balaji Manohar. H. K. Prakash and Pushkara Mallikarjunaiah are producing the film.

Last day, the launch event of Mohanlal’s new was held at Le Meridien, Kochi. The film directed by Jeethu Joseph has been titled as ‘Ram’. It will have popular South Indian actress Trisha as the female lead. Reports suggest that she will be seen as Mohanlal’s wife in the film. It is her second Malayalam outing after debuting last year with ‘Hey Jude’.

Speaking at the event last day, Trisha said it is a dream come true moment for her to act with Mohanlal. She is quoted saying, “Firstly, I should thank my producers for signing me. Whenever I meet Mohanlal sir at award functions, my first question to him would be when are we working together? This combination of Lal sir and Jeethu Joseph is huge. Their Drishyam is a cult film. I’m very excited and looking forward to shoot for the film in 2020”.

According to director Jeethu, ‘Ram’ will be an unusual mass entertainer, an action-thriller with a realistic touch. Indrajith Sukumaran, Durga Krishna and Leona Lishoy are alsp part of the cast. This big budget film will be shot across various foreign locations like Egypt, London and Istanbul. Ramesh R Pillai and Sudhan S Pillai are jointly producing the film under the banner of Abhishek Films.

Take Off director Mahesh Narayanan also in talks with Shah Rukh Khan!

Ever since the release of ‘Zero’, fans across the country have been waiting to hear from Shah Rukh Khan about his next film. The star is in talks with multiple filmmakers from various languages but is yet to make an official announcement. It is learnt that Shah Rukh is trying to collaborate with the best filmmakers in the country. Recently, South Indian directors Atlee and Vetrimaaran were recently invited to discuss projects. Malayalam director Aashiq Abu also recently met the star and committed for a project.

Latest to get an invite from SRK is Mahesh Narayanan, director of the National award winning Malayalam film ‘Take Off’. Mahesh is currently busy shooting for his sophomore film ‘Malik’ with Fahadh Faasil. We hear that the director will be meeting Shah Rukh in Mumbai only after the completion of ‘Malik’.

Mahesh Narayanan is an editor-turned-filmmaker who has worked in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi films. His directorial debut ‘Take Off’ had won a Special Jury Award at the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI, Goa).

‘Stand Up’ also stars Arjun Ashokan, Venkitesh, Nisthar Sait, Seema, Sajitha Madathil, Jolly Chirayath, Rajesh Sharma, Sunil Sukhada, Divya Gopinath, Junice and Sethulekshmi in supporting roles. B Unnikrishnan and Anto Joseph have produced the film and it is expected to have a long run in theatres.

Shane Nigam’s Valiya Perunnal censored with U/A certificate

‘Valiya Perunnal’ starring Shane Nigam in the lead has been censored with an U/A certificate. The film has a run time of over 3 hours, which is kind of long considering the recent trend. Now that the censoring is done, the film is scheduled for a grand Christmas release on December 20.

Directed by debutant Dimal Dennis, ‘Valiya Perunnal’ is touted to be a mass entertainer based in Fort Kochi. The film’s trailer and songs have all been very interesting with lot of freshness. Director Dimal has scripted the film jointly with Thasreeq Abdul Salam.

Shane Nigam plays a dancer in the film. Joju George, ‘Filter Coffee’ fame Himika Bose, Vinayakan, Soubin Shahir, Alencier Ley, Captain Raju, Dharmajan Bolgatty and a bunch of newcomers are also part of the cast.
