Kumbalangi Nights Review: A new benchmark in minimalistic storytelling
After the success of ‘Maheshinte Prathikaram’ and ‘Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum’, the trio of Dileesh Pothan, Syam Pushkaran and Fahadh Faasil are back; this time with a family drama titled ‘Kumbalangi Nights’. Unlike in the previous two films, the trio’s roles are different this time. They are jointly producing the movie under the banners of Working Class Hero and Fahadh Faasil and Friends. Syam Pushkaran has also written the script and Fahadh is playing a crucial role in it. Okay, let’s jump straight to the review.
First things first, Syam Pushkaran, the scribe who has aced the technique of minimalistic writing, has taken his game to the next level with ‘Kumbalangi Nights’. On the base level, it’s a story about four brothers with an endearing romance track at its core. One could conceive this subject in numerous ways but being the brilliant writer that he is, Syam Pushkaran decides to give it a flavour that’s very unique and yet delightful. The closest that I’ve seen any Indian film exploring the relationship dynamics of a dysfunctional family is ‘Kapoor & Sons’ but apart from that, these two films have nothing else in common.
Kubalangi Nights Review Report Hit Or Flop
It’s not very often that we see all the departments of filmmaking gelling together perfectly and ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ is a classic in that sense. Debutant director Madhu C Narayanan knows his craft and that’s evident from the way he has marshalled his troops to come up with a near flawless film. The screenplay is loaded with metaphors and very clear political statements, but they never hit you on the face. Every character has a proper sketch and meticulous attention has been given not to spoon-feed the audience — which is a true sign of respecting the viewer’s sensibilities.
On the performance side, Shane Nigam, Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi and Mathew Thomas as the brothers couldn’t have played their parts any better. Shane has finally come out of his shell of his depressed characters and let himself free. The funny counter dialogues between these four characters seem perfectly spontaneous, which speaks volumes about the chemistry they share. Soubin is a real revelation and, for me, he is the film’s stand out performer.
Debutante Anna Ben (Babymol), the girl with the most genuine smile, is a real find and has plenty more to offer. One can never get tired of talking about the awesomeness of Fahadh Faasil. Watch this film and you’ll know why. As the ‘complete-man’ Shammi, he gives us chills down the spine just with his eerie smile and casual stares. Simply put, in a league of his own, Fahadh still occupies at the top slot.
Kubalangi Nights Review Report Hit Or Flop
Shjyu Khalid’s excellent cinematography captures the mood and serenity of Kumbalangi. It’s like he just fixed a camera somewhere around his characters and simply follow them. He understands the medium so well and uses it as a mere tool for storytelling and not to simply showcase the wide range of he possesses. Sushin Shyam’s music is a healer and there’s a particular stanza, which is so aptly placed in the narrative, that was greeted with loud cheers by the housefull audience.
In a nutshell, Kumbalangi Nights is a slow burner that takes us on a rollercoaster of emotions while subtly addressing several issues and ultimately giving us a rewarding climax. The film doesn’t try to explore the culture or lifestyle of the Kumbalangi natives in-depth, instead it takes us on a casual stroll around in the backwaters from where we can feel and relate to the lives of the people there; from a Saji to a Shammi to a Prashanthan.

Vijay Superum Pournamiyum Review: A neatly made feel good entertainer
‘Vijay Superum Pournamiyum’ (VSP) starring Asif Ali and Aishwarya Lekshmi is director Jis Joy’s third venture. The movie has Asif playing a lazy, regular engineering pass out while Aishwarya essays the role of a MBA graduate, who is passionate about business. They both meet during a match-making and get to know each other when they accidentally get locked inside a room. The two have something in common and the rest of the plot shows how they both come together to make an identity of their own.
Vijay Superum Pournamiyum Review Report Hit Or Flop
Jis Joy has scripted the movie with equal prominence to friendship, romance and family sentiments. If ‘Sunday Holiday’ and ‘VSP’ are anything to judge by, the director pretty well knows how to package a film and make it appealing to the majority audience (families). While the proceedings were all smooth, the climax was set up for a clichéd ending but the basic rule of save-the-best-for-the-last was employed neatly here with a special cameo appearance that leaves a smile and gives an overall satisfying feel.
Asif Ali was at his charming best while playing Vijay, a character that an average Malayali in his early 20s can easily relate to. Aishwarya Lekshmi was good only in parts as the command that the character demanded was missing. Siddique as always has done his part well but its starting to get boring to see him in such roles. He is too good an actor to get typecast like this. Devan, Renji Panicker, Shanthi Krishna, Balu Varghese, Darshana Rajendran and KPAC Lalitha are other notable perfomers.
Vijay Superum Pournamiyum Review Report Hit Or Flop
One of the major highlights in VSP is the songs composed by debutant Prince George. The pleasant songs helps in maintaining the feel-good nature of the film. Renadive’s cinematography was bright and flashy which was complimented well by the trendy and elegant costumes worn by the lead actors.
Overall, ‘Vijay Superum Pournamiyum’ is a well made feel good film that should has enough elements to please audience across all age groups.

Nine Review: An experimental film that’s worth a big screen experience
Prithviraj is an actor well known for his penchant for trying genres that have not been explored much in Malayalam. He takes conscious efforts to push the envelope and take Malayalam movies to a wider audience by doing universal subjects. A casual glance at his filmography, one can very evidently see that. His latest release ‘9’ aka ‘Nine’, which he is also producing, also comes under this category. The Jenuse Mohamed directorial grabbed attention with it’s intriguing trailer and promos. Let’s see if the movie delivers what it promised.
The story of 9 unfolds in the backdrop of a massive global event that lasts nine days. Albert, an astro physicist, reaches the Himalayas to research more about this phenomenon. A widower, Albert is accompanied by his 7-year-old son Adam and his team of assistants. While in the Himalayas, Albert and his son face unforeseen circumstances. What happens over this course of period of nine days and how it affects their lives form the plot.
Nine Movie Review Report Hit Or Flop
Jenuse Mohamed has done a good amount of research to script this film. Careful dealing is given in explaining the aerospace and scientific terms so that a commoner can understand the proceedings easily. 9 is a kind of film that’s hard to bracket to a particular genre. It has elements of horror, psychological thriller and science fiction. It has several layers and concepts but at the core of all that is an emotional father-son bonding.
For a film like 9, lot depends on the technical aspects and I would like to say the makers have succeeded in this part. Abhinandan Ramanujam’s excellent cinematography, atmospheric sound design and Shekar Menon’s apt background score helps in creating a spooky atmosphere. On the down side, writing in the second half could have been better; especially the dialogues, which were too dramatic and sounded bland at many crucial moments.
Nine Movie Review Report Hit Or Flop
Performance wise, the movie basically revolves around three characters – Albert, Adam and Eva. Prithviraj, as always, has done his part well except for the emotional scenes towards the end. It has to do with the melodramatic dialogues as well. Alok, the child actor, who played Adam’s character was impressive. The ‘Godha’ girl Wamiqa Gabbi with her expensive eyes was convincing while playing the mysterious Eva. Prakash Raj, Mamta Mohandas, Rahul Madhav and Adil Ibrahim are also part of the cast.
Overall, 9 is engaging in most parts and will certainly please those who wish to watch something unique rather than the regular mass potboilers or realistic dramas. It’s not often that films like these are made in Malayalam, so do support and watch it from theatres.
Moved by Peranbu, singer Venugopal pens an emotional note
Mammotty starrer Peranbu continues to get excellent response from the audience, particularly in Kerala. The movie has already found widespread critical praise for director Ram’s poignant storytelling and the superlative performances of the two lead actors – Mammootty and Sadhana. Recently, playback singer G Venugopal happened to watch the movie and penned an emotional note on it. His Facebook post reads,
Theres a sentence Mammutty says in Peranbu… “Find me a place where there are no human beings, where birds dont die”. That summarises the movie in short. As cruel, loving, ruthless, depressive, unpredictable, as nature. Usually we get a movie shrinking to an actor’s histrionic abilities. Here we have a great actor filling out into the vast expanse of a brilliant movie script. Ram, Ram, Ram, the director and script writer, Sadhana, as the spastic child, and Mammutty, i simply dont know how to grade them. Wept a couple of times, reminded me of Pavitra, my niece. Shook me out of my comfort zones at times. Thank God, we still have such movies that showcase silence amidst all the din and fury around. A silence that scripts a new order, a new order of humanity. A kindness that perhaps the happy ones of our society may not be able to furnish. It also reinforced my faith in the dilapidated minds, the crushed souls, who are often swept to the outskirts of a society. ” They also serve who only stand and wait”.
– VG
Peranbu tells the story of an affectionate father and his spastic teenage daughter. Along with Mammootty and Sadhana, the movie also has Anjali and Anjali Ameer in key roles. The movie was screened at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR), 21st Shanghai International Film Festival and the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). It is all set to hit screens in Japan. Since the movie has an universal subject, it is certain to appeal to the Japanese audience as well.
